Eddie Olczyk: Saturday Spot Plays | January 22, 2022

        January 21, 2022 | By Eddie Olczyk

NBC handicapper Eddie Olczyk focuses on Oaklawn and Aqueduct this Saturday for his spotlighted trio of key plays.

        Oaklawn Park

        Race 4 // 2:55 pm ET // allowance // 6 furlongs

        #7 Emperador (8-1 ML)

After 6 top-4 finishes without a win, he showed determination in a hard-fought maiden breaker at Oaklawn in his local unveiling. Has to beat likely favorite Macron, but matches up strongly vs. the rest. Win and exacta bet.

        //

        Aqueduct

        Race 7 // 3:20 pm ET // Jazil Stakes // 1-1/8 miles

        #4 Empty Tomb (3-1 ML)

Red-hot trainer Robert Falcone has gotten this one to carry his speed farther in his past 2 starts, nearly wiring the Queens County at 8-1. Ran almost 20 Beyer points faster in Queens County this year than last year, indicating how far the barn has moved him up since the claim. Win bet.

        //

        Aqueduct

        Race 9 // 4:20 pm ET // maiden claiming // 1 mile

        #8 Oliver’s Fortune (6-1 ML)

Runner-up at this class level and distance 2 starts back, I like that he showed speed before fading late vs. tougher last time out. He’s back in with the right company and reunites with Eric Cancel, who rode him to his best finish. The vulnerable ML favorite has been out since Saratoga, never a great sign at this class, so take a price shot. Win-place bet.

Race of the Week: Sunshine F&M Turf | Saturday, January 22

          January 19, 2022 | By Jeremy Plonk

          The Lead:
The Florida-breds remain on center stage for a second straight Saturday at Gulfstream Park. The program co-features the $75,000 Sunshine Turf in Race 4 and the $75,000 Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf in Race 10. The latter is part of the late pick four sequence, and note that players on the Xpressbet and 1/ST BET platforms play in that wager with an additional $2,000 hit-and-split promotion every Saturday and Sunday.

          Field Depth:
A trio of runners drop out of the Grade 3 ranks in QUINOA TIFAH, SISTER OTOOLE and KELSEY'S CROSS. KEY BISCAYNE is a stakes winner, while SUGAR FIX won the Claiming Crown Tiara. This quartet has held the strongest company lines of similar repute.

          Pace:
QUINOA TIFAH should be rail speed and have early company from CLASSY WOMAN and perhaps SUGAR FIX. The pace looks average for a turf mile and does not appear to favor any particular style.

          Our Eyes:
SUGAR FIX set the pace as the 8-5 favorite in this race last year and got swallowed late by the cavalry, finishing fifth by three-quarters of a length. The Saffie Joseph trainee was exiting a second in the Claiming Crown Tiara that day ... and she returns to the same scene Saturday after winning the CC Tiara in her last start. It's safe to say her form is as good as it's been and her 6: 3-2-0 local turf record makes her an obvious contender. Joseph stablemate LOVELY LUVY, fourth here a year ago charging from back in the pack at 19-1, doesn't appear to be much different form this time around. She's inconsistent and rarely wins, but can rally for shares.

SISTER OTOOLE makes her first start since a runner-up Nov. 13 in Woodbine's Grade 3 Maple Leaf. Formidable turf trainer Graham Motion cuts her back considerably in trip after 4 straight runs between 1-3/16 and 1-3/8 miles. The filly did break her maiden over this course and mile trip in 2020, so it will be up to top pilot Luis Saez to shake her up early and get her into this race that requires more 'quicks' than her last few. In that same handicapping light, KEY BISCAYNE also is a course mile winner in 2020 who has been going much farther of late. This race shape/pace doesn't look like it bodes positively for the longer, plodding types.

KELSEY'S CROSS is a confirmed miler and fits the race, but has been off form. It's difficult for older mares to find their best again, but she matches up decently on speed figures if that's your bag.

The X-factor here is dirt sprinter QUINOA TIFAH for a red-hot Carlos David barn that won 3 races here last week. Julien Leparoux is a much better front-end rider than he's given credit for, and he should have this rail-drawn filly right into the mix from the start. Her two turf starts in the past weren't terrible efforts. This all-or-nothing filly has 3 wins and 6 off-the-board finishes in 9 starts. If she fires, she fires, and look out.

          Most Certain Exotics Contender:
SUGAR FIX is in good form and loves the course. She should be in the top-3 throughout.

          Best Longshot Exotics Contender:
I'm hoping for a price with QUINOA TIFAH on the surface and distance questions that some players will have.

          Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$80 win QUINOA TIFAH. $20 exacta QUINOA TIFAH over SUGAR FIX ($20).

Best Horse Racing Bets for Saturday, January 22, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I have picks for all the stakes races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Fair Grounds Race Course, and Gulfstream Park on Saturday. That includes picks for the Lecomte Stakes, a Grade III “Road to the Kentucky Derby” prep race, plus a match-up between two of last year’s Kentucky Derby contenders that looks to be a real nail-biter.

Before you dive down into the beefy goodness of the Saturday picks, be sure to review the full race-cards at one of our recommended online racebooks.

            Good luck!
My Saturday Picks for Aqueduct Racetrack

We’re starting with race three, a seven-furlong starter allowance race on the dirt track for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m calling this one for the second-favored (at 4/1) Handy, ridden by top jockey Trevor McCarthy.

This five-year-old finished in the money 14 of his 24 career starts, winning three. In this lackluster field of eight, that gives him the statistical lead.

Ranked in the top 100 regularly for wins and earnings since 2014, Wayne Potts trains Handy for Final Turn Racing Stable, LLC.

Race seven is the Jazil Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 1-1/8 mile run on the dirt track for four-year-old’s and upward. In this seven-horse field, I like the 9/2 fourth-favored Why Why Paul Why, with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons.

This five-year-old was a bit slow on the uptake at the start of his career, but right now he’s on a four-win streak and looking to add the Jazil Stakes to his resume.
For the record, he finished ten of his 18 career starts in the money, winning six, including his most recent, the Kris Kringle Stakes (Black Type) last month at Parx Racing.

Newcomer Penny Pearce trains Why Why Paul Why for JKX Racing.

Race eight is the Franklin Square Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 6-1/2 furlong race on the dirt track for New York-bred three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Captainsdaughter, with Edwin Gonzalez aboard.

This filly moneyed seven of her nine career starts, winning one. The twist is she’s got more stakes experience than the rest of this ten-horse field combined.

After graduating the maiden class in early October, she finished second in each of her last three races—the Maid of the Mist Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont in late October, the Key Cents Stakes (Black Type) at Aqueduct in November, and the Parx Futurity (Black Type) at Parx in December.

Russell J. Cash trains Captainsdaughter for owner Joseph Birnbaum.
Saturday Picks for Fair Grounds Race Course

Let’s start on the turf course with race eight—the Duncan F. Kenner Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 5-1/2 furlong run for four-year-old’s and upward. I’m going to agree with the morning-line here: Bet your two dollars on the 8/5 favorite, Just Might, piloted by veteran jockey Colby J. Hernandez.

This six-year-old gelding finished 23 of his 32 career starts in the money, winning ten, including the Thanksgiving Classic Stakes (Black Type) last November and the Richard R. Scherer Memorial Stakes (Black Type) in December.

In fact, he’s won six of his last seven starts. Even in this talented eight-horse field, he’s a standout.

Co-owner Michelle Lovell trains Just Might for Griffon Farms and herself.

Race ten is the Marie G. Krantz Memorial Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles turf run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the second-favored (at 7/2) Summer in Saratoga, ridden by Corey J. Lanerie.
This six-year-old mare moneyed 10 of her 17 career starts, winning seven, including the Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes (Grade III) at Keeneland in October and the Blushing K. D. Stakes (Black Type) here at Fair Grounds in December.

Joe Sharp trains Sumer in Saratoga for owners Narola, LLC and Anderson Farms Ontario, Inc.

We’re back on the dirt track for race eleven, the Silverbulletday Stakes—a $150,000 purse, one-mile and 70 yards run for three-year-old fillies. I like the second-favored (at 5/2) Fannie and Freddie, with Colby J. Hernandez aboard.

This filly finished two of her four career starts in the money, winning one. She finished second in her most recent race, the Untapable Stakes (Black Type) in December here at Fair Grounds. She’s got some real competition in this six-horse field, but she’ll do.

Albert M. Stall Jr. trains Fannie and Freddie for Columbine Stable LLC.

We move back to the turf course for race twelve—the Colonel E. R. Bradley Stakes, a $100,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles run for four-year-old’s and upward. I was all set to back one of the four 8/1 underdogs in this 12-horse field, and then I looked at the 3/1 morning-line favorite, Two Emmys, piloted by James Graham.

This six-year-old gelding finished in the money 12 of his 17 career starts, winning four, including the Mr. D. Stakes (Grade I) at Arlington International Racecourse last August. In the past twelve months, he’s finished second in the Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes (Grade II), the Arlington Stakes (Grade III), and the Sycamore Stakes (Grade III). He’s got this.

Co-owner Hugh H. Robertson trains Two Emmys for Wolfe Racing LLC and himself.

Race thirteen puts us back on the dirt track for the Louisiana Stakes (Grade III), a $150,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles run for four-year-old’s and upward. Mandaloun finished well ahead of Midnight Bourbon in last year’s Kentucky Derby—but he hasn’t races since last July, while Midnight Bourbon stayed in the game.

So, while it’s hard to argue with the morning-line’s 1/1 odds on Mandaloun for this race, I’m backing the second-favored (at 6/5) Midnight Bourbon, ridden by Joel Rosario.
The four-year-old Mandaloun finished in 11 of his 13 career starts in the money, winning two, including the Lecomte Stakes (Grade III) here at Fair Grounds a year ago. Since then, he’s shown or placed in six of the nation’s most important graded stakes races.

Hall of Famer Steven M. Asmussen trains Mandaloun for Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC.

We’re back on the dirt track for race fourteen—the Lecomte Stakes (Grade III), a $200,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles run for three -year-old’s. One of the 37 qualifying races comprising the “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” the Lecomte Stakes awards KD leaderboard points to the top four finishers (10-4-2-1).

Pappacap (the 8/5 favorite in this race) is currently at the top of the KD Road leaderboard with 12 points, just two points better than Epicenter (second-favored in this race at 9/5). I’m buying a win ticket on Pappacap, piloted by Joe Bravo.

The three-year-old Pappacap moneyed four of his five career start, winning two, including his second race, the Best Pal Stakes (Grade II) at Del Mar last August. He notably finished second in both the American Pharoah Stakes (Grade I) in October and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Grade I) in November.

Hall of Famer Mark E. Casse trains Pappacap for owner-breeder Rustlewood Farm, Inc.
            Saturday’s Picks for Gulfstream Park

We’ll start on the turf course with race four—the Sunshine Turf Stakes, a $75,000 purse, 1-1/8 mile run for Florida-bred four-year-old’s and upward. I’ll go with the morning-line here and bet my two dollars on the 7/5 favorite, Shamrocket, with Javier Castellano in the irons.

This five-year-old finished 18 of his 22 career starts in the money, winning five, including his most recent, the Sunshine Classic Stakes (Black Type) here at Gulfstream earlier this month.

Todd A. Pletcher trains Shamrocket for Donegal Racing. Pletcher has tapped Castellano to saddle Shamrocket for his three most recent races.

Race seven is 7-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run on the turf course for three-year-old’s. I’m buying a win ticket on the third-favored (at 4/1) Red Knobs, piloted by Tyler Gaffalione.
This colt moneyed three of his five career starts, winning one. Right after his graduation victory, he finished third at Churchill Downs in both the Iroquois Stakes (Grade III) in September and the Street Sense Stakes (Listed) in October. He’ll do.

Longtime horseracing veteran Dale L. Romans trains Red Knobs for owners Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister.

Race ten is the Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf Stakes, a $75,000 purse, one-mile grass run for Floirda-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m calling this one for the second-favored (at 5/2) Sister Otoole, ridden by Luis Saez.

This five-year-old mare moneyed nine of her eleven career starts, winning two. In her last two races, she finished fourth in the Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes (Grade III) at Belmont Park in October and second in the Maple Leaf Stakes (Grade III) at Woodbine in November. In this seven-horse field, that makes her a star.

Longtime Breeders’ Cup veteran H. Graham Motion trains Sister Otoole for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners.

Oaklawn Park Picks: American Beauty S. featured January 22
              By J.N. Campbell

Oaklawn Park Picks - Saturday, January 22, 2022

              Race 1: 3-9-8-2
              Race 2: 8-3-2-9
              Race 3: 11-4-5-8
              Race 4: 5-9-7-2
              Race 5: 4-7-1-5
              Race 6: 10-2-1-8
              Race 7: 4-10-3-8
              Race 8: 2-5-1-7
              Race 9: 11-4-10-9
**Most Likely Winner: Caddo River #4 (Race 7)**
**Best Value: Tone It Up #4 (Race 5)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 7: Caddo River #4, 2/1):

Trainer Brad Cox seems poised to collect another Eclipse Award, and his work at Oaklawn continues apace. He is shuttling between his winter base at the Fair Grounds, and coming up to Hot Springs when the racing heats up. With the Lecomte S. Day in New Orleans, he will probably be down south. But his able-bodied assistant, Jorge will have things well-in-hand. Last year’s Smarty Jones 150k winner is back, and the Shortlead homebred was DQ-ed in his return to racing back in December. I did not think he was going to be so strong on the comeback trail, but this is Cox we are talking about. That race was unusual because this colt looked very green throughout. He was weaving all over the track, but there is no question that his late kick was powerful. Even though Florent Geroux is out-of-town because he will be riding Mandaloun (among others) @FG, Fran Arrieta gets the call—solid jock. The son of Hard Spun should get to visit the winner’s circle, if all goes to plan.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #4

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Tone It Up #4, 20/1):

Last week, trainer Ingrid Mason brought a runner from Hawthorne to Hot Springs, and she almost pulled off a major upset. If it had not been for a 1st time starter, her filly would have won the day last weekend. She gets another chance with this daughter of Tonalist. With a couple of attempts over the OP course, she has been up against some stiff company. Breaking her maiden in her 3rd career race at Hawthorne was in a MSW22k event. So, think about it … jumping into an OC80k was quite a leap. I think this filly is starting to find her feet, and the energy she exhibited in the latter half of that OC50k last out was positive. If she can extend herself, and get this distance, then it could be a score for Ms. Mason.

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, American Beauty S., $150k, F&M 4+):

After a day off on Friday due to the cold, it is good to be back at the track racing. The “feature” on this Saturday is a challenging race for older females. There are 9 drawn in here, but I have a suspicion that Ron Moquett will scratch Sarah Harper #6. If that happens, we still should have a good group. Like a number of bettors, I am pretty interested to see Tom Amoss’ Li’l Tootsie #1 and Steve Asmussen’s Abrogate #5 go at it once again. They were up against one another last time out at Oaklawn in a high-level ALLW Co. contest, and the former won the day. Prominent Arkansas racing magnate Alex Lieblong owns the Asmussen runner by Outwork, and I am sure he would like to visit the winner’s circle. I want to use both of these entries, but neither of them will be at the top of my ticket. They are good … great in fact, but I am much more interested in Asmussen’s other half of the uncoupled entry. Joy’s Rocket #2 is one that has visited Hot Springs before, and even though she had no answer last out against Wildwood’s Beauty #8, Perfect Happiness #4, and Candura #7, that doesn’t mean she is without ability. Her class is strong, her price will hover around 5/1, and I think she could be sitting on a big comeback race. She surprised folks in the Raven Run (G2) back at Keeneland in October, and she could be more than game. I like the riding ability of Tiago Pereira, who is being handled now by HOF jockey Gary Stevens. What a guy to have in your corner … Pereira wins!

              Wagering Recommendation: $2 Superfecta, 2 w 1/5/7 w 1/5/7 w 1/5/7

**Most Likely Winner: Epicenter #5 (Race 14)**
**Best Value: Logical Myth #1 (Race 12)**

                ALL-STAKES PICK 4…

                LEG 1: (Race 11: Dirt, 1 Mile 70 yds., Silverbulletday S., $150k, 3F)

We are going to start this Saturday party down in New Orleans with this “Non-G.” The 1st Leg of a sequence like this can be massively important … we have a Goldilocks mentality … not too many picks, but “Singling” will not be easy either. Just right ... With such an evenly-matched contest, I am willing to go a little deeper than a "Single." My top selection is Al Stall’s Fannie and Freedie #1. This daughter of Malibu Moon has some real attributes; namely, 3rd in the form cycle. Her speed figs look progressive, and with Colby Hernandez aboard (3rd time), it is hard to see a way around her, if she continues to elevate. One other that I think has potential is Steve Asmussen’s La Crete #5. I realize she might be better on the turf based on her pedigree, but this Stonestreet homebred was excellent in breaking her maiden on debut back at Churchill in November. Don’t forget … that was a 2-turn race, which is hard to find when it comes to a 1st out runner. To flash that much speed early on in something that you have never done before, speaks volumes. The time off could be a blessing because now she is ready to start her 3-yr-old campaign. Asmussen tabs Joel Rosario to ride once again, and he knows how to handle young, inexperienced racers. I think those 2 should help get us through to the next stage … they’re off!

                Selections: 1/5 (2-Deep)

                LEG 2: (Race 12: Turf, 1 1/16th, Colonel E.R. Bradley S., $100k, 4+)

Heading over to the Stall-Wilson Turf Course, it is time to get going on the grass. This turf route has an impressive group of 12 that have drawn in. I think this might be the toughest race in the sequence, and that will necessitate us going as deep as possible. Thumbing through the M/Ls, you will notice that easily the classiest of this bunch of older males is Hugh Robertson’s Two Emmys #6. The son of the now deceased English Channel has the distinction of being the final winner of what used to be known as the “Arlington Million.” Scoring in the Grade 1 Mr. D Stakes shocked everyone, especially that he outlasted Chad Brown’s Domestic Spending. The gelding then came back at Keeneland in the Sycamore (G3), and nearly won there too. Regular rider James Graham gets the call, and if his mount is “live,” then he could be difficult to catch. He does all of his running on the frontend, so the rest of these better make sure he doesn’t get loose on the engine. Let’s include him, but just in case that doesn’t go to plan, I particularly like the look of Joe Sharp’s Logical Myth #1 because he is the antithesis of the presumptive favorite. This gelding by Data Link likes to do his work from off-the-pace, and I think he has had few chances to exhibit his ability. He has faced rating issues, and traffic troubles, which tells me that his riders have had trouble getting him to settle. Sharp’s entry has some back class, and I like the choice of having Adam Beschizza get another leg up. With the “Blinks Off,” maybe that means he is focused and ready to go. I want to also include a few others on this ticket, since we have some long odds runners that have a chance. Don’t forget about Halo Again #2, Cavalry Charge #3, Major Fed #5, Excess Magic #8, and Forty Under #12. That should get us through …

                Selections: 1/2/3/5/6/8/12 (7-Deep)

                LEG 3: (Race 13: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Louisiana S. (G3), $150k, 4+)

I don’t know about you, but all this talk about Mandaloun #2 and Midnight Bourbon #3 not being ready to fire … I am not buying it. You could take the popular Chess Chief #1 or the well-coached Warrant #6. However, this is simply a match race between the 2 Derby Trail and Triple Crown foes (faced each other 5x in ’21). They are conditioned by the best-of-the-best … Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen. Last year, Cox had his charge right on the heels of Essential Quality (stablemate), and Juddmonte had to be pleased with their homebred. Honestly, he did as well as any Louisiana Series participant has in the KYD (except of course for his LA Derby performance, 6th). I think this 4-yr-old by Into Mischief is ready to go, and should be strong with Florent Geroux once again, back in the irons. As for Asmussen’s venerable colt, the only time he bested his rival was on this weekend, in the Lecomte S. (G3). I thought he had an excellent year, and that is attributed to the excellent handling by the Asmussen Barn. Winchell has much to be proud of when it comes to this runner that ended up with earnings in excess of $1.1 million. With Joel Rosario up against his fellow competitor Geroux, it should be another great chapter in this modern day street fight! Let’s include them both, and move on!

                Selections: 2/3 (2-Deep)

                LEG 4: (Race 14: Dirt, 1 1/16th, Lecomte S. (G3), $200k, 3)

The finale on this Saturday is the 1st Leg of what is knowns as the “Louisiana Series.” These young colts that just turned 3-yrs-old are ready to roll … after those KYD148 Points. There are several directions that you can head in. Some will back Mark Casse’s Pappacap #3 because he has a strong list of prior starts. Others might care to support Al Stall’s Trafalgar #4, after this router won nicely in a OC50k race on the Main Track at the Fair Grounds last time. I am non-plussed by these entries, and instead, I have a strong opinion … in fact, it is so strong that this is a “Single” for me. Steve Asmussen has a pair entered in the Lecomte S., a race he won last year with Midnight Bourbon. But I think Epicenter #5 is the play here. Winchell-owned (just like Midnight B.), he was stellar last time in the Gun Runner S. 100k. He won by a whopping 6+ lengths, and can triumph again. Asmussen makes the switch to Joel Rosario, who does well when it comes to hustling his ride out/near the lead. With a couple of sound works under his saddle, this colt by Not This Time should be the favorite come post time. At 8/5 or so, I will be making a sizable bet on him to “win.” That’s why this one is a “Single,” and should give his HOF trainer yet another “graded” victory!

                Selections: 5 (Single)

                -------------------------------------------------------

                .50 P4 TICKET COST: $14.00

Enjoy Lecomte Stakes Day from down in New Orleans! The tradition at the Fair Grounds continues!

Free Horse Racing Tips Today – Saturday, January 22, 2022
                  The Racing Sharks Rob Davis

We have studied the form from all races across the country for Saturday, January 22, and provided our best horse racing tips.

We come crashing back to earth this week after the fun, festivities, high stakes and big spending of the week that is the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.

Just the one stakes race across the major states but handy enough fields where there looks to be good value if we can land on the right mark.

We have made five selections in total and are very confident in four of those selections whilst we think our best roughie of the day represents excellent value at juicy odds. So, read on below to find our best horse racing tips for this Saturday, January 22.
                  Randwick, Race 1 – 3. Subterranean ($8.50)

A cracking race to start off the Sydney card with form lines coming from all over the place.

A couple of bush horses building impressive records have the fitness edge whilst the rest of the field resumes and we are looking to one of them, out of some handy 3yo middle distance races to get us off to a flying start here at close to double figure odds.

The pairing of Dunn and Rawiller is proving to be a lethal combo and has served us well in recent times and we think this son of Rebel Dane represents value in an open race here.

The two paired up to win the Group 3 Ken Russell Classic on this horse as a 2yo before he ran into some smart gallopers working his way through the 3yo black type races.

His 5th in the J.J. Atkins is a fair indication of his quality and forget he went around in the Dulcify toward the end of last prep.

His recent trial was good and the runner up out of it has subsequently ran a close 3rd in a million dollar race at the Gold Coast last week. Trialled without the blinkers but they look like they are staying on for the first up tilt which tells us they mean business.
Moonee Valley, Race 1 – 5. Duchy of Savoy ($2.50)

An out and out race in two here and we are leaning to the filly over the colt.

The Freedman colt Unflinching has been super impressive winning his first two starts, his latest around ‘The Valley’. On both occasions he has given nothing else a look in, jumping straight to the front and whilst that is usually a recipe for success around the tight inner city Melbourne circuit, Duchy of Savoy served us well when winning resuming when we declared her one of the best of the day, so we are going to stick with her again here.

She won by 3.5L that day under hands and heels riding which justified the decision by Team Hawkes to try her in Stakes company last prep. She was able to camp off the speed in that affair before really putting them to bed when asked the question at the 200m down the long run home at Sandown.

She draws inside the favourite, and we anticipate her being tucked in behind the pace whilst there looks enough speed on paper of the long shots that they might just provide nuisance value to the favourite and allow her to pounce late.

Has a class edge on exposed form, couldn’t have been more impressive last start, maps perfectly and is the better odds of the clear two top elects.
Kembla Grange, Race 2 – 7. Eye Pea Oh ($4.50)

We thought enough of her to have her in our top 5 selections last week however the meeting fell over because of inclement weather.

She probably strikes a harder race here but no doubt has an extra gallop under her belt and as we opined last week, her trials have been faultless.

One of the state’s leading provincial riders to steer in Grant Buckley, she gets a good draw and whilst the track will still be rain affected, she is out of a Pins mare which is a double tick on tough going.
                  Randwick, Race 8 – 2. Purple Sector ($7.00)

We are going to give Purple Sector one more go here.

It is hard to go past the fact his place strike rate is double that of his win ratio, but he has had genuine excuses for his two seconds this time in.

An outrageous slaughter job by Bowman first up when we declared him our best roughie of the day at 20/1. He should have won that with a leg in the air, then dwelt and bustled by the apprentice rider at his latest start to sit outside the lead before being pounced upon late by Kirwan’s Lane who made it back to back wins and is in close to career best form.

They’ve gone back to Hughy here and it is hard to see a rider of his quality repeating the same misdeed twice, especially from a good draw.

The favourite, Through the Cracks, steps up in trip to 1400m after a long time off, whilst Purple Sector comes back in distance 3rd up after two very sound efforts which tells us he is the better value of the two and you will generally finish in front if you can find the overs.
                  Randwick, Race 9 – 9. Wairere Falls ($8.50)

Looking to cap off a big day with a value winner in the second last at Sydney headquarters.

We really liked the way this guy progressed through the winter and whilst second up isn’t his pattern, he has never landed on a mile this early in his campaign.

He’s also never been a great trialler but was given two hitouts leading into this prep and looked very forward in his second outing.

Did enough first up to tell us he is right in this, gets a weight pull off favourite Yiyi, handles all going, drawn well and gets the services of Berry.

Best Bet – 9. Wairere Falls (Randwick, Race 9)
Next Best – 5. Duchy of Savoy (Moonee Valley, Race 1)
Best Roughie – 3. Subterranean (Randwick, Race 1)

2022 Kentucky Derby Prep Race Betting Odds & Picks: Pappacap Headlines Tough Lecomte Stakes Field (Jan. 22)

Life on the road to the Kentucky Derby is about to heat up, with another exciting, lengthy journey that will combine moments of glory with bits of utter disappointment taking place along the way.

Hundreds of racing connections tied to hopefuls have the same dream. And that’s simple: to earn one of 20 spots in the starting gate and compete in the world’s most well-known, most-watched race taking place on the first Saturday of May on the hallowed grounds at Churchill Downs.

We’ve had a few very minor prep races take place thus far, but things really get started Saturday with nine horses chasing the victory in the Grade III Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.

Handicapper Jeremy Pond is joined by TVG analyst Andie Biancone on this year’s Derby trail, with the duo delivering their best bets and top selections for more than 20 races leading up to the first jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown.

Let’s take a look at the Lecomte field and where the pair has landed for this intriguing race, as well as on some exotic wagers — including a Late Pick 4 and Pick 5 tickets — to close out the stacked card.

Lecomte Stakes Best Bets & Longshots
                    Andie Biancone

No. 3 Pappacap (9-5): It’s no question that this horse is a freak.

Pappacap has only finished off the board once in his career, but that was in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity which — at seven furlongs — might not have been his most ideal distance at that caliber. My only concern for this horse would be his extensive two-year-old season, but according to the connections, this colt has been training better than ever.

This horse has the most stand-out back class in the entire field, with short-margined, second-place finishes in the American Pharoah and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, both of which are Grade I events.

I typically have a hard time supporting horses on the Derby trail who have run so extensively at a young age, but Pappacap has been so impressive against such salty company, I can’t knock his chances one bit, especially in what seems like a relatively mild field.

No. 5 Epicenter (2-1): I really try not to pick heavy favorites, but this horse was so impressive in the Gun Runner stakes race that I couldn’t discount him.

I almost like him more than Pappacap, solely based on his most recent performance. He drew away from a field by 6 1/2 lengths with such commanding ease, with a hand ride down the lane. Epicenter ran a 1 1/16 miles in 1 minute, 44 seconds without ever being contended, and he looked like he had plenty more to give.

This is another horse who will greatly benefit from that inside speed. I have a deep appreciation for the way he settles in a race, even pushing fast fractions. And when looking at the size of this horse compared to the rest of the field in the Gun Runner, he was a clear standout.

Longshot — No. 6 Cyberknife (6-1): This is my longshot for the Lecomte.

He has been extremely consistent in his last three starts, finishing off the board only once in a 6.5-furlong sprint to a Steve Asmussen horse named Classic Moment, who went on to finish fourth in the Remington Park Springboard Mile.

In his last start, he finished a 1 1/16th miles in 1:44, which is the same final time Epicenter ran in the Gun Runner. Cyberknife has had consistently strong works leading up to this race, including a bullet work on Jan. 15 where he ran the best five-furlong time out of 41 horses.

There’s a lot of inside speed in this race, which will be extremely advantageous to this horse who likes to come from just off the pace.

                    Jeremy Pond

No. 5 Epicenter (2-1): My top pick. Trainer Steve Asmussen has never won a Kentucky Derby in his decorated career, but this could be the year he finally gets off the schneid with the son of Not This Time.

Epicenter is coming off a stellar win by almost seven lengths in a Fair Grounds stakes event, which doubled as a race that saw his speed figures improve from his prior outing. Jockey Joel Rosario, who’s arguably the top rider in the world if you take Irad Ortiz Jr. out of the conversation, gets back in the irons after he guided the Asmussen contender to his maiden-breaking score.

No. 3 Pappacap (9-5): The slight favorite has twice finished second to Derby Futures favorite Corniche, losing to the Bob Baffert charge in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and American Pharoah.

A son of 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic and 2018 Pegasus World Cup winner Gun Runner, Pappacap has five career starts that are highlighted by last summer’s win in the Grade II Best Pal at Del Mar.

Trainer Mark Casse has a legit player in the Derby hunt, with the belief Pappacap might get better has he gets older since that’s exactly what happened in his daddy’s career. The lone graded-stakes winner in the field, Pappacap could take a big step forward with another victory. Major player.

Longshot — No. 4 Trafalgar (6-1): If you’re looking for a live play outside of the top two horses at a better price, look no further than the son of Lord Nelson. Trained by Al Stall Jr., Trafalgar enters the race off back-to-back wins following a second-place debut effort this past summer at Saratoga Race Course.

What’s key for me is the fact his last win came going around two turns, which many horses will be doing for the first time on the Derby trail. Stall’s charge also has versatile running style, with his victories coming from a deep-closing position to his most recent win happening after pressing the pace.

Getting Colby Hernandez, the Fair Grounds meet’s leading rider aboard, doesn’t hurt either. Potential upset winner.

                    Pond’s Best Bets:

#3 CLASSIC FILM (7-2) could get a perfect pace scenario today. #11 PAPA CHARLES (10-1) looks like a steal in this spot given edges in speed & record at the distance. #1 DAKOTA BOY (20-1) is another who has run ok so far in the career and against this group, nothing would surprise me. #8 SAVAGE SAILOR (3-1) is in with a great chance based on the horse's foundation gained in previous starts.

#4 AWESOME FAMILY (6-5) has the best breeding in the group and goes out for a solid barn. The question is can you stomach taking a short price in this type of field. #7 MIDNIGHT TEQUILA (6-1) is a major player in today's race edging the field in several key handicapping factors including speed & pace numbers. #6 ADMIRAL TRUFFLES (9-2) is proven as a good bet to at least hit the board under today's distance and surface conditions in the young career. #5 MINDSHIP Q (5-1) is a major player based on speed figures alone.

#4 AGRAFFE (8-1) should be competitive based on the bloodlines which has it tops in the group. At the current price this one would be a great way to get some value in horizontals. #3 RITA MARGA (5-1) should be competitive today based on the horse's speed & pace numbers. #9 LIAM'S KISS (4-1) has to be respected based on the connections. #6 MITIGATION (7-2) looks to have to have kept the best company in the previous starts.

Hanson: Fair Grounds Spot Plays for Lecomte Day Jan. 22
                          Vance Hanson

It will be unseasonably chilly at Fair Grounds on Saturday for Road to the Derby Day, featuring the Lecomte (G3), but forecasted sun should provide a fast track and a drying-out turf ready for a strong, stakes-laden card of 14 races.

Here are several horses of interest on the program.
                          Race 5 - Maiden (2:58 p.m. ET)

The form of #1 Luckman (6-1) blew hot and cold at Woodbine last fall, but he deserves a pass for being overmatched in the Summer (G1) on grass and simply failed to fire when caught behind a slow pace in his season finale. His two runner-up finishes were solid efforts, and chances are this relatively seasoned son of Empire Maker will be even better trying dirt for the first time.
                          Race 7 - Maiden (3:56 p.m. ET)

First-time starter #5 Non Violence has been working lights out for Bret Calhoun and should take action here, but another debut runner that entices some is #9 Mercy Warren (10-1) for Cherie DeVaux. The daughter of Run Away and Hide shows some sneaky-positive works on her tab and will be ridden by Brian Hernandez, who guided the DeVaux-trained Reagan's Decision to an 18-1 upset on debut in a similar spot Dec. 26.
                          Race 8 - Duncan F. Kenner S. (4:25 p.m. ET)

#2 Cowan (8-1) has never won on grass in four previous tries, but was beaten less than a length by world-beater Golden Pal in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2) at Keeneland, and was even thought enough of to take a swing against older rivals in the Al Quoz Sprint (G1) the following March. He plied his trade at a turf-less Churchill Downs last fall, winning one and losing another by a head, and enters under the radar after a dull run at Oaklawn last time.
                          Race 12 - Colonel E.R. Bradley S. (6:20 p.m. ET)

Although he's endured a couple hiccups during his seven-race turf career, #3 Cavalry Charge (8-1) has consistently overachieved on the surface. A winner in three of his last four after starting his career with a prolonged drought on the main track, the son of Honor Code looks quick enough to contend in what will be his stakes debut, and has shown the ability to fire fresh.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park, Fair Grounds, and Santa Anita for January 22, 2021
                            By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s get going on a big day of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Fair Grounds, which hosts the Lecomte Stakes (G3) and Silverbulletday Stakes for 3-year-olds. We will also be covering Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn Park and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s see if we can get this home today.

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Fair Grounds:

                            Fair Grounds January 22, 2022

                            Race 11: Silverbulletday Stakes

#5 La Crete was ultra impressive on debut last time out at Churchill Downs. If she can repeat that effort, she is the one to beat in this spot. #1 Fannie and Freddie has an experience edge over our top pick and nearly won a stakes race over this track last time out.

                            Race 12: Colonel E. R. Bradley Stakes

#6 Two Emmys has run first or second in his last five starts, all of which has been a little tougher than this spot today. #7 Excess Magic has won two straight races over this track, including a nice stakes victory last time out. He will be tough again today.

                            Race 13: Louisiana Stakes (G3)

#3 Midnight Bourbon and #2 Mandaloun renew their rivalry today, and you cannot really separate the two horses. Midnight Bourbon seems to have a pace edge today, but Mandaloun has proven to be better at his best. Use these two and move on with this one.

                            Race 14: Lecomte Stakes (G3)

#3 Pappacap gets class relief for this race today after running second in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) last time out. He has been working very well at Fair Grounds. #5 Epicenter will be a tough challenger for out top pick, though. He has been ultra-impressive in his last two starts.

                            THE TICKET
