14th race – (3) Pappacap was given a brief rest after finishing second to likely 2-year-old champion Corniche in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. He turned in a game performance that day, finishing less than two lengths behind the winner. Trainer Mark Casse has used this race effectively in the past, winning two of the last three runnings, and it looks like he has an excellent chance to make it 3 wins in 4 years. (5) Epicenter romped in a prep for this race last month in very good time. An encore of that effort will make him the main threat in this field. (4) Trafalgar has received nice seasoning through allowance and maiden wins and has gotten better in each start. Definitely belongs in the exotics. (6) Cyberknife is coming off a solid maiden and with Cox’s barn off to a hot start at the meet, he cannot be ignored. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-5-6. Trifectas: 3-4-5 with 3-4-5-6 with 3-4-5-6-8.

Colonel E.R. Bradley Stakes | Purse $100,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth on Turf | Four Years Old and Upward

Cavalry Charge (3) won the last two races in a row of his 2021 campaign which ended in October, both on turf. He also won the first race of his 2021 campaign last June, at this distance on turf, and following a lengthy nine month layoff. Returning from just three and one-half months off this time, Cavalry Charge put in a very strong series of workouts since resuming training last month, culminating with a second best of 46 five furlong drills last week. Jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. was aboard for all three wins last year and the best of the three earned the horse a very strong 113 Equibase Speed Figure. That figure is absolutely stakes quality as we can tell by noting Two Emmys earned a 113 figure winning the Mr. D. Stakes last August and Monarchs Glen earned a 109 figure when third and beaten less than a length in a stakes similar to this one last month at Fair Grounds. With all those factors squarely in favor of Cavalry Charge running as well as he did last fall, he gets top billing in this field.
Monarchs Glen must also be considered as a contender, not only because of his effort last month in the Diliberto Memorial Stakes over the course but also because he gets a fast and contested early pace scenario to compliment his late running style. With horses like Dyn O Mite (11), Forty Under (12) and potentially also Bodecream (9) all having shown a need to lead early in some of their prior races and all having poorer outside posts requiring them to show early speed and get position so as not to lose ground on the first turn, Monarchs Glen can drop back to last just as he did four weeks ago when rallying five wide on the turn to miss second by a neck and miss winning by another half-length. Joe Bravo comes in from California to ride for trainer Maker and they’ve had some success together so barring any traffic trouble, Monarchs Glen could be rolling by the field in the stretch.
Two Emmys (6) is another potential “early” pace type, and possibly an early pace casualty “If” jockey James Graham can’t get the six year old to relax from the start as others from the outside stream by. He has had the lead from the start in his last three races BUT all of those races were very slow early and with the pace likely to be much faster than 49 to 50 seconds to the first half-mile, Two Emmys may naturally find himself in third or fourth. He rallied from seventh to miss by a nose with a furious rally on the Fair Grounds turf two years ago and form third early to win last January and he does NOT wear blinkers, which suggests his early placings lately were strategy rather than necessity. Now with five first or second place finishes in six turf races at Fair Grounds and having fired nicely to miss by a half-length off a similar layoff at the end of 2020, this hard-knocking gelding has every right to be first or second as he’s been now in 10 of 13 career turf races.

1st race – (3) Classic Film rallied nicely for second last time. Was claimed by Delgado and should handle this field. (11) Papa Charles might appreciate the switch to Tapeta. (8) Savage Sailor drops a notch and should be a main contender. (10) Board Certified could be a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-8-10-11.

3rd race – (3) Lido Key drops into a claimer and seems well-suited for Tapeta. (6) Appointed moves up off a claim and should be the main rival. (2) Starship Mallomar returns to Tapeta and is due for a solid effort. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6. Doubles: 2-3-6 with 1-2-4-5.

4th race – (2) Shamrocket has extensive stakes experience and looks best in this spot. (5) Stirling Drive was claimed in his last two starts and should be a main factor here. (1) Cucina has been sprinting and could be tough to catch off the stretchout. (4) Lure Him In ships in from California and can make his presence felt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5. Exactas: 2-5 over 1-4 and 1-4 over 2-5.

8th race – (9) Liam’s Kiss (A) was bothered by a slow start and rallied nicely for second. Should make amends here. (1) Spread Joy is bred for dirt and should turn in an improved performance. (10) Butterbean was second in both career starts and belongs in the exotics. (6) Mitigation is working sharply for this start and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-9-10.

10th race – (2) Sister Otoole ran well enough in a turf stakes to rate as the top choice here. (7) Sugar Fix has won three of her last five starts and should be the main competition. (4) Kelsey’s Cross was no factor in a graded stakes but fits much better here. (3) Key Biscayne is worth a look in this field. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-7. 3^rd race [Alw 5000s, 7F] – (5) Royal Realm (A) returns on short rest from a race where he was claimed for $40,000 and raced widest of all on a day when the track was favoring the inside paths. (1) Rudy Rod (B) got off to an uncharacteristically bad start and then took a lot of kickback. (6) Fair Haired Boy was second his last two times in similar starter allowances. (2) Mo Mischief was a winner last time in a N2L claimer at Aqueduct.

7^th race [Jazil, 1 1/8 mi] – (7) Forewarned was a longshot winner of the Queens County last time at the same distance at Aqueduct. He was recently an invitee to the Pegasus World Cup but opted for the Jazil. Trainer Uriah St. Lewis has won several stakes at the Big A. (4) Empty Tomb was second in the Queens County after setting the pace and getting run down by the winner. (1) Why Why Paul Why won his past four races at Parx including a stakes race going two turns against a field of eight. (5) Core Conviction won his last two starts at the Big A in a maiden race for Chad Brown and then an allowance which was only the third start in the career of this now 5-year-old.

8^th race [NY, Franklin Square, 6 ½ F] – (7) Moam was a debut winner at Saratoga for Horatio DePaz. This rare NY-bred by Twirling Candy could be a good one given the five months to mature since her impressive beginning. The home-bred for Barry Schwartz rallied smartly to win by almost two-lengths. (6) Leeloo broke her maiden by almost eight-lengths in her second start on a sloppy track at Aqueduct last month. She was a $150,000 yearling purchase as a son of impressive young sire Practical Joke. The second-place finisher in that race came back to win her next start by open lengths. (9) Shesawildjoker is the horse to beat based on her five-race record that includes a victory and a pair of thirds in NY-bred stakes races as a 2-year-old. She was a debut winner in June at Belmont Park for David Donk. (3) Thinking It Over won at first asking for trainer Ray Handal on a muddy track in November at the Big A in a race that was meant for the turf. Bet down to be the 2.05-1 favorite, she stalked the pace to beat a field of 11.

9^th race [NY, Md 25000, 1 mi] – (10) Forestwood Lane (B) struggled from behind on a very speed favoring track and still got fourth in his second career start. There is room for improvement and he gets a positive rider change. (3) Shinjuku had a series of thirds last year at Aqueduct in maiden special weights. He has been off since July. (9) Bohemian Ruby had his best finish, a second last time at the Big A. (8) Oliver’s Fortune drops back to this level where he ran second last month.

Best bets: Royal Realm (3^rd); Moam (8^th). Best value: Forewarned (7^th); Forestwood Lane (9^th).
