Top Horse Racing Picks for Thursday, January 27, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

The three tracks I visited for my Thursday horse racing picks—Gulfstream Park, Laurel Park, Sam Houston Race Park—went from one extreme to the other, with Gulfstream offering up mostly favorites to tout, while Laurel Park responded with a couple of third-favored underdogs as well as an 8/1 sleeper.

Remember that you can find the race-cards for all three of my chosen tracks at our best horse racing wagering sites.

      Good luck!

      Thursday’s Picks for Gulfstream Park

Let’s start on the turf course with race five, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming run for Florida-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’ll go along with the morning line on this one: Bet the 2/1 favorite, Tracy Ann’s Legacy, with top jockey Paco Lopez in the irons.

This six-year-old mare finished in the money 21 of her 31 career starts, winning nine. She notably finished third at Gulfstream in both the Abundantia Stakes (Black Type) last January and the Captiva Island Stakes (Black Type) last March.

Regularly ranked among the top trainers in earnings since 2005, Kelly J. Breen trains Tracy Ann’s Legacy for Kenwood Racing LLC.

We’re back on the dirt track for race six , a one-mile claiming run for four-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. I like the 3/1 morning-line favorite here: Sososubtle, ridden by Tyler Gaffalione.

This four-year-old gelding finished in the money four of his nine career starts, winning two, which already gives him the statistical edge in this eight-horse field.
What convinces me Sososubtle can win here is his performance in last year’s Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (Grade II).

Sure, he finished last, but he danced tantalizingly close to the money throughout most the race, even after he bumped into a competitor on the first turn.

Armando De La Cerda trains Sososubtle for owners-breeders Teresa Palmer and David Palmer.

Race eight is a 5-1/2 furlong allowance race on the main track for Florida-bred three-year-old fillies. My money’s on the second-favored (at 7/2) Chasing Happiness, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard.

This filly moneyed all three of her career starts, winning one. She most recently finished third in the Sandpiper Stakes (Black Type) at Tampa Bay last month.

Regularly top-ranked among North American trainers for earning since 2008, David Fawkes trains Chasing Happiness for owner William A. T. Rainbow.
My Thursday Picks for Laurel Park

We’re starting on the dirt track with race one, a six-furlong starter optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. My money’s on the 7/2 third-favored John the Bear, piloted by veteran jockey Jevian Toledo.

This four-year-old gelding finished four of his 12 career starts in the money, winning two. Yeah, I’m not hugely impressed with John the Bear, either—but then, I’m even less impressed with the rest of this six-horse field.

Claudio A. Gonzalez trains John the Bear for Euro Stable. Gonzalez put Toledo in the irons for John the Bear’s most recent victory.

Race five is a six-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the main track for three-year-old fillies. I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Moody Woman, ridden by Jorge Ruiz.

This is a pretty competitive 11-horse field, but I favor Moody Woman because she moneyed all six of her career starts, winning two. She most recently finished third in the Gin Talking Stakes (Black Type) here at Laurel Park last month.

Longtime horseracing veteran Marilyn G. McMullen trains Moody Woman for owner Robert James McGee.

Race eight is a 1-1/16 miles allowance run on the dirt track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the third-favored (at 5/1) Award Wanted, with Xavier Perez in the irons.

This five-year-old mare finished in the money eleven of her 19 career starts, winning four.
Award Wanted finished third in the Maryland Million Turf Distaff Starter Handicap here at Laurel Park last October, which gives her one more stakes-level money finish than any of the rest of this eight-horse field has. She’ll do.

John J. Robb trains Award Wanted for owners No Guts No Glory Farm and Erica Upton. Robb had Perez saddle Award Wanted for that stakes run as well as for her most recent victory in November.
Thursday Picks for Sam Houston Race Park

Let’s begin on the turf course with race five, a 1-1/16 miles starter optional claiming run for four-year-olds and upward. I’ll admit, the 8/5 morning-line favorite has some nice speed figures, but I’m betting on the third-favored (at 7/2) Mishko, ridden by Ezequiel Lara.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed nine of his 16 career starts, winning six. That gives him a statistical edge on the top two M/L faves.

Miguel Angel Silva trains Mishko for Thumbs Up Racing, LLC. Silva has put Lara in the irons for Mishko’s last four races, resulting in three money finishes, two of them wins.

We’re back on the dirt track for race six, a 5-1/2 furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have not won a race since July 21, 2021 or have never won four races. I’m going to agree with the morning line here and buy a win ticket on the 3/1 favorite, Lovely Lolita, piloted by Danny Sorenson.

Versus the rest of this nine-horse field, this five-year-old mare has the stats to succeed: Five money finishes in ten career starts, three of them wins.

Lovely Lolita is trained by owner Steve F. Williams, who has tapped Sorenson to saddle Lolita for her last five races, resulting in two wins and a third-place finish.

Race seven is a one-mile allowance race on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I like the 5/2 second-favored entry here: Mo Tap, with veteran jockey Richard E. Eramia aboard.

This four-year-old colt moneyed two of his three career starts, winning his initial maiden attempt in October, and most recently finishing third in an allowance race last month at Delta Downs. He’s got the statistical lead in this seven-horse field.

Henry B. Johnson, Jr. trains Mo Tap for owners Gregory M. Hoffman and Douglas E. Brooks.

Aqueduct Picks: Well-bred Runninsonofagun on January 27
        By J.N. Campbell

        Aqueduct Picks - Thursday, January 27, 2022

        Race 1: 2-6-1-7
        Race 2: 3-1-6-4
        Race 3: 2-1-5-3
        Race 4: 1-5-2-7
        Race 5: 8-1-2-4
        Race 6: 4-8-6-2
        Race 7: 5-6-3-4
        Race 8: 4-5-8-2
**Most Likely Winner: Runninsonofagun #3 (Race 2)**
**Best Value: Amazing Dream #1 (Race 4)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Runninsonofagun #3, 9/5):

There is no hotter sire than Gun Runner right now, and the folks at Three Chimneys are now charging a $125k stud fee … rightly so … Here is a runner by that sire that looks full of promises after breaking his maiden on New Year’s Eve 2021. That was an MC affair, and trainer John Toscano is looking to build up a head of steam. I think we can expect some great things from this one, and Dylan Davis has a good Meet going so far … Anything above 4/5, I would consider value, and worth a bet. “Deserving favorite” against this crowd …

        Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #3

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 4: Amazing Dream #1, 6/1):

HOF trainer Todd Pletcher has an uncoupled entry scheduled for Race 4, and I am sure that No More Mischief #2 will take quite a bit of money. I am not interested in this one, and instead much prefer the ladder climbing ability of her stablemate. By First Samurai, here is a filly that could excite at somewhat of a price, as she gets Lasix for the 1st time. Last out, she broke her maiden in her 5th career race running nicely down the lane going 7F in an MC20k. This is not too big a class hike, and Manny Franco will be aboard, just like before. Repole Stable does some savvy investing, and look for this one (who cost $190k @KEE September Sale) to be on the move late. Sometimes when a barn enters a pair, you have to look hard at the higher priced entry! Better to go up, than down …

        Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #1 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 7: Dirt, 1 1/8th, ALLW72k, 4+ NY Breds):

Looking at this tough ALLW Co. race, most bettors will gravitate to the M/L favorite, Therisastormbrewin #6. That is not a poor play, but at odds of 8/5, it doesn’t seem like much of a betting proposition. Even though this gelding by Broken Vow won last time out with a solid speed fig., looking over his career, he has not won all that many races over 22 starts. I am wanting to look elsewhere for value. I think I found a top selection in Jim Ryerson’s Run for Boston #5. This gelding by Include is used to competing in company like this, and with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons, should get a nice trip. He was 2nd last time out back in late December at Aqueduct, and his progression over the course of the last year looks promising. If he can make a clean break, then he could have this race in hand. I feel an ice-cold Exacta coming on …

        Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 5 w 6

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Aqueduct for January 27, 2022
            By: Aaron Halterman

It’s Pegasus Week and the action should be awesome all week long! For the free pick 4, we will head to Aqueduct today, which has another good Thursday card. We will also be covering Gulfstream Park today for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. We’ve been hot lately, so hopefully we can keep it up! Let’s kick off the week in a good way!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Aqueduct:

            Aqueduct January 27, 2022

            Race 5: Allowance Optional Claiming

#4 Kobes Legacy will take a big drop down in class for this race, which looks to be needed after some poor efforts against tougher. #1 King of Hollywood was close last time out when running on the dirt, so running on it again today should lead to improvement.

            Race 6: Maiden Claiming

#8 Jerusalem Gates takes a big drop down in class for this race, which should make a big difference. #4 Breaking Stones was close in his last two tries at this level, which were both contested at the same distance as todays race.

            Race 7: Claiming

#6 Therisastormbrewin will look to make it two in a row for Rob Atras in a race where he looks to be the lone speed. That will make him tough. #2 Straight Skinny was improved last time out, but must run even better today to compete with this group.

            Race 8: Claiming

#8 Steam Engine drops down to the claiming level today after being claimed by Rob Atras last time time out. #4 Dream Bigger will look to make it two in a row after winning last time out; however, he must move up in class for this race.

            THE TICKET

            $.50 Pick 4 (Races 5-8) 1,2,3,4,6 / 4,8 / 2,6 / 2,3,4,5,8 – $50

Harness Racing Plays for Thursday, January 27
              Frank Cotolo

              POWER PLAYS
              Freehold - Races 3, 4, 5

These Freehold races make up a Pick 3 (P3) and deserve attention for wagering on any or all of the legs individually.

              Race 3
This is also the first leg of a Pick 5. Outsider Three Rocks raced well and was gifted a finish third from fourth by judges due to interference at the start. She was good at this level and in that first race of the season she was 7-2. Here, the track handicapper has her at 8-1, which is fine with us. J Danae took a chance on the top last week and was disqualified in the same race as “Rocks” and may try to wire the field.

              Race 4
Bad Day Black Rock and Fat Boy, bet-backs from last week’s P3, need consideration here along with Two Hip Dip. That one had a tough trip last out and is more of a contender than the program lists at 6-1.

              Race 5
Outsider Sluggem N raced a long mile using two moves in his last and though he ended seventh he was still within striking distance. He was well supported and just missed two back. Risky Buddy was strong from the 8 hole but came up short. He is better placed to go faster and be in the mix here.
              FEATURES
              Yonkers - Races 4, 8

              Race 4
We’ll use Sweet Sally Sue from last week’s H2W entry in this race. She comes into this as a beaten favorite, finishing fourth from an outside route, on Dec. 16. If also-eligible Dbldelitebrigade draws in he will serve up some speed that can change the course of this mile.

              Race 8
Alexa Skye lost her first 2022 affair to the pacer leaving on her right, Heavens Showgirl A, who was sucked along behind her and full of pace when she came off the wood. Alexa Skye needed that race and will be all out to begin a strong 2022 campaign of wins.

                Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 27th January 2022
By: Racing and Sports Time published 2022-01-27 at 01:24 PM (GMT +11:00)

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Gosford, Pakenham, Rockhampton and Geraldton.

                GOSFORD: RACE 7 @ 4:55 PM

TWITCH (6) tried to lead all the way last time out in town but just ran out of puff late. Has a handy record over this track and trip with a win and a second from just two outings and will be at peak fitness now fourth-up from the spell. Should be right there at the business end. The well-related RETRIEVAL (1) is drawn to get the run of the race from the inside alley and looks a top-three contender if he brings his best. ADAMAS PRINCE (2) has placed first-up before and can run a race while fresh. ZETARITA (7) has won second-up in the past and can earn a cheque. RAHNI FACTOR (9) next best.
                SELECTIONS: Twitch to win.

                PAKENHAM: RACE 3 @ 6:45 PM

EBONY KING (3) tried bravely at Sandown last time when hitting the line well. That performance showed a win is near and he looks ideally placed over the extra ground. Should go close. IRISH EXCHANGE (6) has only had the two runs and has caught the eye on each occasion. Suited by the rise in trip here. Should make a bold bid. THE PSYCHOLOGIST (9) has finished in the money at past three runs at this trip. Bigger track here is likely to assist. Has to be respected. CHATEAU NUE (1) is a gelding by Toronado out of Beltija stepping out on debut for the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr stable. Is sure to be well educated for debut outing. Check the market.
SELECTIONS: Back Ebony King to win.

                ROCKHAMPTON: RACE 8 @ 4:50 PM

BOLD AND LUCY (8) was plain in stronger her two starts last preparation. Her figures stack right up and she's looked the part in her two lead-up trials. Is in well with the 3kg claim and expect a bold return. TEELING (4) resumes for a hot barn coming off the deserved Maiden win. Can come back further improved and Stanley sticks from the recent trial warmer. The yard is flying and expect the gelding to go well. TRIPTONIC (5) switched yards and looked in need of the run here. Was only beaten 1.1L at Ipswich prior and with a key jockey switch to Wiggins can come hard. DEEP BREATH (1) placed first-up and will be better for it. Needs a good ride from the awkward gate and note Stanley gets off.
SELECTIONS: Bold And Lucy if the money comes.

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Thursday, January 27
Posted on January 26, 2022 by David Aragona

                    RACE 3: BIG AL’S GAL (#2)

Saratoga Beauty has been popular at the claim box lately. She would obviously be formidable if she were able to repeat that 100 TimeformUS Speed Figure that she earned two back when winning by 7 lengths. However, that number is a real outlier in her past performances, and it was earned first off the claim for the dangerous Rob Atras barn. She didn’t fare nearly as well for Tom Morley and now she goes out for George Weaver. Weaver is 6 for 33 (18%, $1.56 ROI) first off the claim over the past 5 years. However, the barn is going through a real rough patch, as Weaver is just 1 for 56 (2%, $0.06 ROI) at NYRA over the past 3 months. Between the two short prices, I strongly prefer Big Al’s Gal. This mare drops back in against NY-breds after trying open company claimers in her last few starts. She ran well against a solid field for the level two back, a race that was flattered when runner-up Sweet Mia came back to win a $25k claimer. She couldn’t match that result last time, but she ran into a superior foe in Customerexperience, who just won again on Sunday with a massive speed figure improvement. She was also racing in the inside path on Dec. 19, a day that featured a dead rail. Now she goes out for Kelly Breen, who is a solid 12 for 51 (24%, $1.77 ROI) first off the claim in dirt sprints over 5 years. Her recent form is stronger than it appears and she handles the distance. If the track again appears to be playing to inside paths on Thursday, it might even be worth upgraded Wait a Minute, who has the speed to make the lead and was against a track bias when she last competed on Jan. 13. However, she really needs to turn around her form to upset both favorites.

                    RACE 6: ACTUARY (#6)

Jerusalem Gates is obviously the horse to beat as he drops in class. However, I’m reluctant to accept a short price on this horse for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the Linda Rice barn has been very cold as of late. Furthermore, this horse has had consistent issues at the gate. He routinely breaks slowly, and he’s now done it in both starts since returning from a layoff recently. The stretch-out may help, but I’m skeptical we’ll see him produce a top effort at what figures to be a pretty short price. The problem is that the other logical contenders aren’t all that appealing. Breaking Stones is probably the main rival, and he does seem like the second most likely winner if Jerusalem Gates stubs his toe. However, he got a good trip last time and just had no punch through the stretch. Furthermore, he usually takes more money than is really merited so I’m anticipating an underlay on him as well. My top pick is Actuary. This British-bred gelding has actually transferred his turf form to dirt in recent starts. The problem is that he was never particularly effective on turf, having failed to make an impact in any of his U.S. starts. He couldn’t even produce results for top claiming trainer Rob Atras, who let him go for $16k last time. That said, Antonio Arriaga is an underrated trainer, who is 6 for 21 (29%, $4.23 ROI) first off the claim in dirt routes over 5 years. This guy’s recent speed figures put him in the mix, and he didn’t get the best trip last time when Kendrick Carmouche overcommitted to an inside path.

                    RACE 8: GOLANI BRIGADE (#3)

There’s plenty of speed in this $25k claimer, but Steam Engine could be the so-called “speed of the speed” as he makes his first start off the claim for Rob Atras. This gelding is always sharply away from the gate, and rarely isn’t in front at the first call. His last couple of starts have been on the dull side for him, but he got involved in a very fast pace that fell apart last time. It’s not a great sign that he’s dropping in for $25k after getting claimed for $45k, but Rob Atras places horses where they can win, and this is probably just the right spot. I view him as the horse to beat, and he could make things tough on the other speed types. Dark Money could sit a good trip from just off the pace under apprentice Jose Gomez, who has been riding very well as of late. However, he was beaten for a cheaper tag last time and really just has that one effort from November at Belmont among his recent starts that makes him a serious player here. I prefer Golani Brigade. This runner’s recent form at Finger Lakes is solid. He ran particularly well last time when he survived a very fast early pace to hold off a couple of closers. That form was flattered when third-place finisher Fitzpatrick returned to run well at Aqueduct in a tougher spot. Golani Brigade has plenty of prior speed figures that make him competitive at this level and Jeffrey Englehart’s horses have run reasonably well at this meet despite the fact that he has just one win coming into this week. I’m hoping Dylan Davis can work out a stalking trip from the inside.

                            Picks Notes
#1 English Treasure Don't think you have to get too cute here -- this filly should be a handful. She ran very well in both career starts, and she has enough tactical pace to sit close in a race without any speed while cutting back in distance.
#3 Buongiorno Bee She might be able to stick around for a piece with a tactical trip, as she faded badly in her first turf try, but maybe she can sustain that forward pace a bit better if the splits are very modest.
#4 La Gioiosa Think she might be a bit of an underlay for a top team, though she did turn in a good effort in her first local try. Wouldn't be a surprise, but I prefer the top choice of the likely chalks.
Race Summary English Treasure is likely to flash some pace from the inside in a race where there just is not much early foot signed on. 'Treasure should trip out, and something similar to the Keeneland try gets this done.

                            Fair Grounds - Race #4

#6 Mageez A bit worried that he won't get the right race flow to score from off the speed, but he probably offers a decent price in here while getting out of stakes company, and he has some pretty decent back turf form. Chance at a mid-range price.
#5 Highland Creek Not much to argue with on the form here, as he gets down in class after a nice runner-up effort in the Louisiana Champions Day Classic, and he landed his only turf try. Capable with a good spying trip awaiting. Tactical edge on some of the other main players.
#4 Budro Talking His connections have to be thrilled to get away from Who Took the Money, who landed that Champions Day Turf score and then showed up in allowance company to score again. This guy has a real chance while facing a softer bunch.
Race Summary Mageez should get overlooked in here, and he has run some okay races on the lawn in the past. I'll try to get him in the exacta with the two other logical players listed.

                            Picks Notes
#9 Surveillance He looked good when cutting back to land a maiden win at this trip on the turf last time out, and he has enough early pace to avoid having too much to do, but he'll be comfortably settled off a fair pace. Along late.
#7 City Mischief He was competitive with the local company here last season, and he finished up well with an okay group at Aqueduct last time out. Best stuff fits here.
#10 Spectrolite His early hustle from the outside should ensure a fair pace, and though I don't think he's the most likely winner, he is pretty good when he's on his game, so there is always a chance he speed pops these.
Race Summary This one offers a pretty attractive 43 Betmix Longshot Score, and that is a metric that often identifies races with vulnerable favorites. Surveillance isn't going to be a big price, but he makes plenty of sense after a really nice sprint score last out.

#2 DEMETER N Class should tell in this spot, today's Best Bet.
#8 E R HILARY Two wins and a second sandwiched around post 9 try recently.
#5 VELOCITY MCSWEETS Can use speed well, piles up the checks.
Race Summary Demeter N, a $118,000 earner last year, finished third behind a pair of odds-on favorites at the Meadowlands in her only two starts this year. She is reunited with Bartlett and should prove tough under these conditions. Bet on her to win and place.

#4 BELINA Quick move, long duel, tired late as beaten favorite.
#2 AWESOME HILL Seeks fifth win in row on the front end at projected odds-on.
#5 BETTER WATCH IT Took back from post 7, won 3 of 4 prior from close to pace.
Race Summary Belina made a quick second-quarter brush to engage the 4-1 pace setter, put away that rival in deep stretch, but couldn't hold off the deep closers as the odds-on choice. She's worth a playback at an inflated price. .

#3 BEACH HOUSE Took aim at odds-on winner, fell 1/2 length short of 23rd victory.
#6 MR DISOMMA Raced erratically while trapped in 3-hole, could spring mild surprise.
#2 KILLER MARTINI Ranged up, flattened out against better, draws closer inside.
Race Summary Beach House advanced on the final turn, tipped 3-wide for the stretch drive and just missed catching the 2-to-5 pace setter. She was heavily raced last year but could get back on the winning track with a duplicate effort. Play a 2-3-6 exacta box.
