      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Fair Grounds - Race #9
      Picks Notes
#2 Kellie Mae She has faded badly in both lifetime starts, but she has early pace and is meeting a bunch without any other serious early burn. Think she has a chance to clear these and get brave at a price.
#6 Custom Guitar Her form is inconsistent, but her best stuff keeps her in the mix with these. She has just enough tactical speed to keep eyes on the top choice early.
#4 Stop Shop N Drop Think she's going to be a bit overbet with these, even though she's a good fit on the drop while cutting the tag in half. Wouldn't be a surprise at a likely underlaid price.
Race Summary Kellie Mae offers enough pace intrigue in the finale, and she'd be interesting at any kind of double-digit price with what appears to be a great race shape waiting for her.

      Fair Grounds - Race #5
      Picks Notes
#8 Viola Star These Louisiana Downs types are never a sure thing to show up with competitive efforts over the local footing, but there are enough forward players signed on in here to think this filly might get a decent finishing trip at a square price.
#5 G's Squeeze She has some pressing ability, but the fact remains that her best game comes on the engine, and she is likely to have some company up top today. Dangerous form with an iffy race flow?
#7 Galaxy Thirtysix She has some ability to spy the pace and finish, and she did just get the better of G's Squeeze when they met last time out. She should get the right setup here.
Race Summary Viola Star will have to prove she classes up with these after a few Louisiana Downs tries, but the race flow should flatter her running style and give her a chance to rally into these splits.

      Fair Grounds - Race #6
      Picks Notes
#5 Charlie G He is getting a bit short on excuses after seven tries, but he has been moving in the right direction in recent starts and should be able to sit a bit closer to the pace today.
#2 Bouldering He gets on the lawn for the first time after an improved effort last time out, and he seems right in the mix here if he's able to take any kind of additional step forward today.
#3 Joeboy Think he has a bit of appeal in the underneath spots, and he's probably capable of something a bit better than he showed in the local turf debut. Tactical type might hang around for a piece.
Race Summary Charlie G. has a right to be tough in here with one of his better efforts, and there isn't a whole lot to worry about in the running lines among the rest of the group.

        Jerry Shottenkirk's Daily Picks

        Gulfstream Park - Race #3
        Picks Notes
#1 General's Duty Was a fast-closing second at Laurel two back and was an even fifth in his first one at GP; gets more ground and can come calling late.
#2 Egyptian God Has a long list of works for his first one, and the Irish-bred colt lands in a good spot for his debut.
#5 Native Thunder Has some good works for his first one, and he's bred to show speed on turf.
Race Summary General's Duty probably needed his last to one, and in the past he's shown a decent late move.

        Gulfstream Park - Race #4
        Picks Notes
#4 Miss Yearwood Tired in her only start but can benefit from the Lasix today; can show speed today, could be tough to catch, and should be a good price.
#2 Catiche Was on the board in two of three career start and most recently for third going longer; turns back and can be in the mix throughout.
#7 Frozen Solid Didn't break well and raced wide the first time out; expect big improvement.
Race Summary Miss Yearwood can break much better today and could be tough customer on or close to the lead from the start.

        Gulfstream Park - Race #5
        Picks Notes
#2 Cherokee Chatter Lost photos in her last two, including the latest over this track; knows the Tapeta and finish well.
#1 For Ever Ours Has been a good lately mover and was fourth in a similar spot; can show more speed from the inside.
#6 T. Waltz Was a closing third at a higher level last time and fits well here.
Race Summary Cherokee Chatter has been close in her last three and can finish the job at this distance.

Laurel Park Selections for January 30, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

          By Kyle E in Horse Racing — Jan 30th, 2022 4:28am PST

Laurel Park Selections for January 30, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

Life Is Good is too good. Todd Pletcher’s Life Is Good won the first big Grade 1 race of 2022, as he cleared out of the gate and didn’t look back.

He ran a race that Knicks Go is accustomed to running. Knicks Go likes running out front early, but got trapped slightly in traffic early and wasn’t going to catch the blazing-fast Life Is Good.

          Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

Knicks Go enters retirement to be a stud while Life Is Good is going to be a contender over the next year. He has a good chance of being the Horse of the Year for 2022 after Knicks Go is scheduled to win for 2021.

If Life Is Good stays in that form, there’s no telling how far he can go this year. We’re back to more of a normal card on Sunday, with BetOnline hosting 11 racecourses for wagering on NFL Championship Sunday.

Our first look is at Laurel Park where we had a sweep on Saturday. The Gulfstream Park card wasn’t a sweep, but Laurel Park worked out well. Laurel Park has nine races worth $365,300 on Sunday afternoon in Maryland. Head below for our best Laurel Park picks on January 30, 2022.
Taking Your Horse Race Betting to the Next Level

          +180 (9/5)
          (2) Awfully Foxy
          +300 (3/1)
          (3) Italian Dressing
          +600 (6/1)
          (4) Bourbon Wildcat
          +350 (7/2)
          (5) Practically Dizzy
          +500 (5/1)

          Post Time: 12:10 p.m. EST
          Distance:6 Furlongs
          Purse:$39,600

Race 4 covers a mile for a $30,000 purse at Laurel Park on Sunday. Look for Awfully Foxy and Combat Queen to run a productive race in this one.

Awfully Foxy and Combat Queen have a big chance to do something well on Sunday afternoon. Awfully Foxy is 2 for 10 and going consistently since December of 2022.

The filly has finished in the top-3 in eight straight wins. She hasn’t won since January 23, 2021 in a $24,610 assignment.

In her latest attempt, Awfully Foxy showed 3rd on December 27 in a $38,940 race. That was a good enough run that Awfully Foxy can run in contention this time with a similar effort.

Combat Queen has finished 5th, 1st, 2nd, 2nd in her previous four races. The mare struck with a 1 ½ length win for a $38,080 purse.

Following that one, Combat Queen has placed 2nd in back-to-back events, most recently a $42,570 event by 2 lengths on January 20. This race on Sunday looks doable.

          Race 6
          (1) Davidic Line (1A) Bumperdoo
          +180 (9/5)
          (2) Ain’t Da Beer Cold
          +1500 (15/1)
          (3) Galerio
          +250 (5/2)
          (4) Closer Look
          +1200 (12/1)
          (5) Up Against It
          +800 (8/1)
          (6) Treasure Trove
          +10000 (10/1)
          (7) The Poser
          +800 (8/1)
          (8) Plamen
          +600 (6/1)
          (9) Caribbean
          +2000 (20/1)

          Post Time: 2:34 p.m. EST
          Distance: 1 1/16 Miles
          Purse:$62,400

Race 6 is a 1 1/16 mile race on the dirt. Expect to see Davidic Line and Galerio putting up a big effort in this one. Galerio has lots of stakes experience and should handle this workload.

Five of the last eight races have been stakes races for Galerio. He didn’t win any, but has been consistently close.

Galerio has finished 2nd, 3rd in his previous two trips. Two races back, the gelding placed 2nd behind Doubleoseven by a nose for a $68,120 purse.

It was a productive effort and then she went stakes racing immediately thereafter. Galerio finished 3rd in the $75,000 Jennings Stakes.

Davidic Line should be the horse to beat in this one. He is 4 for 26 in his career and he has finished 1st, 1st, 2nd in good form in his last three races.

He won two races back in a starter allowance race for $30,000 event. That was too easy, with Davidic Line pulling away with authority.

In his next and most recent attempt, it was the most promising with Davidic Line placing 2nd behind Why Why Paul Why by 2 ¾ lengths in the $100,0000 Kris Kringle Stakes on December 28 at Parx.

He was denied a win, but running near the front in a $100,000 race was sharp. With the same effort, expect Davidic Line to have a big chance at the wire

          (1) DAVIDIC LINE (1A)
          +180

          Race 7
          (1) Irishman
          +800 (8/1)
          (2) Tyler Time
          +1500 (15/1)
          (3) Maximo Strong
          +3000 (30/1)
          (4) Striking a Pose
          +100 (1/1)
          (5) Graywing
          +160 (8/5)
          (6) Elvirus
          +1000 (10/1)
          (7) Disputed Notion
          +1500 (15/1)

          Post Time: 3:04 p.m. EST
          Distance:6 Furlongs
          Purse:$30,000

Race 7 is a $30,000 event covering 6 furlongs on the dirt. Look to Striking a Pose and Graywing as top contenders to win.

Striking a Pose is a one-time winner through 14 assignments. He has finished 5th, 5th, 2nd in his previous three attempts.

Striking a Pose is fresh off a solid performance on December 27, placing 2nd behind Assembly Point by 1 length in a $27,750 event. That was encouraging after going 5th on December 14 in a $25,000 race.

Graywing has finished 4th, 1st, 5th in three attempts. Two races back, Graywing beat The Big Mozz by 7 ½ lengths in a $36,383 race.

That was impressive, though this could be tougher against Striking a Pose. After that win, Graywing finished 5th on New Year’s Day for a $33,920 purse. More was expected in the assignment.

Striking a Pose is likely going to have enough in the stretch run. Look for her to edge out Graywing at the wire for a Sunday afternoon win.

LAUREL PARK PICKS AND PONDERINGS: JAN. 30, 2022
            John Piassek

            Post time: 12:10 p.m.

            Carryovers: Rainbow Jackpot Pick 6 — $2,308 Super High 5 — $0 Late Pick 5 — $0

Check out our other handicapping here!

            RACE 1: MAIDEN CLAIMING $16,000, 4 AND 5-YEAR-OLDS, 1 MILE

            1-6-5-7

#1 Ninetynine Excuses (8/1) switched to the dirt for his second start last out, and showed speed before tiring. Not sure how he’ll handle the longer distance but the recent improvement is encouraging. #6 Secret Soulmate (6/1) has broken slowly in each of his first two starts, but closed well both times. Exits a fairly salty maiden claiming race at Penn National; both the second and third-place finishers in that race came back to win. #5 Callyourightback (8/5) ran a career-best brisnet figure of 75 last out with a sharp-closing seventh going shorter. Looks to keep moving forward second off a brief layoff.

RACE 2: STARTER OPTIONAL CLAIMING $25,000, 4-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, FILLIES AND MARES, 6 FURLONGS

            1-2-3-4

#1 Combat Queen (9/5) has Victor Carrasco in the saddle, who has been absolutely on fire this month. He won three stakes races yesterday, and has won 14 times from 35 mounts total. This mare won at this level three races back, and finished second against similar in her last two races. She’s going to show speed from the inside and will be in an ideal spot for a horse of her running style. #2 Awfully Foxy (2/1) lost a photo to Combat Queen last out and will be rolling late. A horse with as little early speed as she has is automatically at a disadvantage in my book, however. #3 Italian Dressing (6/1) got caught up in a speed duel going a mile last out and backed up badly. That race obscures her otherwise good recent form and will drive up her price, but it’s not a comparable circumstance as this race.

            RACE 3: MAIDEN CLAIMING $10,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS, 1 1/16 MILES

            5-7-2-1

#5 Dahtestes Hero (7/2) goes first off the claim from Churchill Downs for Daniel Velazquez. He made a mild rally in his first two-turn try on dirt last out but flattened out. He still ran a relatively strong figure of 66 and has room to improve. #7 High Rock (7/2) has gotten much better with every start. Last out, he made a promising move, and while he tired late, he ran a career-best number of 67. He’s carrying just 115 pounds; most of his rivals are carrying 124. That should help the cause. #2 Edens Glory (3/1) takes a career-low drop in class and ran on well last out after falling well behind.

            RACE 4: CLAIMING $40,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS, 6 1/2 FURLONGS

            2-3-5-1

#2 World of Fools (6/1) got up to break his maiden at Charles Town last out after rating off the pace. Anthony Farrior and Arnaldo Bocachica have been sharp here lately. #3 Al Loves Josie (2/1) has run in the mid-70s in each of his three most recent races and is the main speed threat in the race. His most serious competition on the front end will be #5 Lantau (5/1), who went gate-to-wire to break his maiden last out but have trouble getting to the rail from his post position.

            RACE 5: MAIDEN CLAIMING $25,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS, 5 1/2 FURLONGS

            9-4-10-6

#9 Winston’s Gold (8/1) made a bold rally two back and just missed, but struggled when fanned wide last out. Will try to save more ground this time and get a piece at a price. #4 Hampden Lane (8/1) has far and away the best last-out figure in the race, a 76, He’s getting better with every start and will also come from behind. #10 Remembering Wilbur (3/1) goes first out for Dale Capuano, who hits at an impressive 27% with his debuters. Watching the board with this one.

            RACE 6: ALLOWNACE OPTIONAL CLAIMING (N/W2X), 4-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 1/16 MILES

            1-5-7-8

#1 Davidic Line (9/5) is the flagship half of the Jamie Ness entry. He went off as the slight favorite in the Kris Kringle Stakes last out, and battled well in the stretch to finish second behind rapidly rising Parx star Why Why Paul Why. He’ll break from post eight here, which isn’t ideal, but if he can get to the rail and the lead, he’s in great shape. #5 Up Against It (8/1) made an impressive rerally to beat a n/w1x field last out, after rushing up and dropping back. Usually, he’s more settled in midpack. #7 The Poser (8/1) consistently runs in the 80s, and had some traffic trouble in his last two starts and will hope for some smoother sailing here.

            RACE 7: CLAIMING $16,000 (N/W2L), 4-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 1 MILE

            5-4-1-2

This looks like a two-horse race on paper, between Lacey Gaudet stablemates. I’ll give the edge to #5 Greystone (8/5) over #4 Striking a Pose (1/1), on account of him being a bit lighter-raced and making his third start off a long layoff. Striking a Pose has had many chances against winners, and while he has competitive figures, he also doesn’t have a lot of early speed. #1 Irishman (8/1) has great late pace figures and should close for a piece of the trifecta.

RACE 8: ALLOWANCE OPTIONAL CLAIMING (N/W2X), 4-YEAR-OLDS AND UP, 6 FURLONGS

            5-2-7-4

#5 Jovis (9/2) battled gamely on the lead last out and just missed. He’s run at least an 85 in three of his last four dirt starts, the only one in the field to do so. #2 Forced (7/2) is very dangerous when he gets the lead. He’s won each of the last three times that he led at the opening quarter point. He’s faster early than He’s a Shooter, drawn to his direct inside, so he should be able to get to the front and the rail. #7 Mojovation (9/2) races third off the claim for Jamie Ness and comes back to Laurel after a disappointing race at Parx last out. He won at this level three starts back at Delaware Park, but hasn’t been the same since the Ness claim. However, he’s facing easier competition than he’s been seeing and still has strong middle and late pace figures, so he can’t be entirely discounted.

            RACE 9: MAIDEN CLAIMING $16,000, 3-YEAR-OLDS, FILLIES, 6 FURLONGS

            6-1-5-2

#6 Monarch Beach (8/5) got bounced around on debut a bit but closed well for third. Wheels back in just seven day’s time for Farrior and Bocachica. #1 Heidi T (4/1) got caught up in a very destructive speed duel last out, in which everyone who was near the pace ended up buried. Should race better with a more honest pace. #5 Derby Julep (7/2) showed speed for the first time last out and got in a duel with Mama G’s Wish, who went on to win that race and two more subsequent ones. This should be an easier field to deal with.
