2^nd race [OC50k/SAL50k, 1 mi] – (2) St. Lukes was a geared-down open-length maiden-winner after a three-month layoff and was claimed by Michael Miceli for $30,000. (6) Hot Stepper got his first victory in a maiden special weight for Charlie Baker who is quietly having a great winter meeting at Aqueduct. (7) Convertible Freeze was also a maiden winner who got claimed after a large margin of victory. He was taken for $40,000. (5) R Doc moved from a series of turf races to the dirt and broke his maiden for the $40,000 tag with a late rally.

4^th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (5) Check That Chip (A) was well bet in his debut but steadied back to last at the start, rushed up on the outside to third, but then faded down the stretch. Blinkers go on for start number two. (8) Rhumjar registered the field-high speed figure while running second in his last start at Aqueduct. (6) Cathedral Beach got bumped around in his debut race and finished third behind the second choice. (2) Actualize got claimed away for $40,000 in his only start where he ran third behind two horses that came back to win their next starts.

8^th race [OC 62k/N2X, 7F] – (8) Sibelius (C) won a first-level allowance in a front running effort when he was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1. In two starts he seems to have taken a liking to the Big A. (4) Famished (B) was unprepared for the start and reared up. He rallied from last to get second and was claimed for $25,000 in a N3L condition. (2) Answer In was claimed for $40,000 from his last start which he won and moves to the barn of hot trainer Rob Falcone Jr. (7) Repo Rocks exits a second in a stake at Parx after winning two races at Aqueduct in an allowance and a starter allowance for Juan Vasquez who is winning with 41% of his starters at the current meeting.

9^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (3) Beach Boy Al (A) broke well in his debut, pressed the fast pace, got the lead, and then faded to fifth. (6) Eminency was second in his initial race which he followed with a fourth-place finish where he was less than a length from the win as the even money favorite. (4) Pineapple Man made a big improvement in his second start when he finished third. He showed early speed in both races. (7) He’s Got It makes his third start for Mark Hennig after moving from turf to dirt.
Best bets: St. Lukes (2^nd); Beach Boy Al (9^th). Best value: Check That Chip (4^th); Sibelius (8^th).

2nd race – (1) Rogers Ginger returns to turf after a second on Tapeta and should be able to handle this field. (7) Ghostliner makes a dirt to turf switch and should be formidable. (5) Charleston Strong could be tough to catch at this distance. (2) Polsar was a close third in his last trip on turf and should not be ignored. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-7. Exactas: 1-7 over 2-5 and 2-5 over 1-7. Doubles: 1-2-5-7 with 1-2-4.

3rd race – (4) Gloucester (A) was a highly impressive debut winner and should be able to handle winners in this spot. (3) King Cab flopped in a stakes but is working very fast for his comeback. (1) The Skipper Too may enjoy smooth sailing from the rail as long as there’s no storm. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4.

6th race – (4) Ventriloquist cuts back to a turf sprint and will be dangerous with Irad. (6) Heels Together makes her turf debut and may take a step forward. OLIVER - The Feb 5th clash at Santa Anita was at a class level of (98). Dropping to a lower class level considerably, so he should be in a good position. Is ranked totally at the top in earnings per race entered. A powerful effort right here in this race will add to the lifetime bankroll. INTIMIDATION - It looks like Eramia had to be in the know about this gelding on Jan 20th when riding him for the first time. Back atop again today. A pony coming back this quickly after a nice contest is a good signal. Racing at a similar level as last race on January 20th at Sam Houston. I think Calhoun has found a good spot for him, and I like his chances in today's race. MAXI MOON - I really like that most recent contest on January 22nd at Sam Houston where he finished third. Eikleberry rode this racer for the initial time last time around the track and comes right back this time around. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (74-80-91) make this animal a strong contender.

HAVE A PLAN - In any race of 7 furlongs, I like to back a contender that has been sharp in sprint contests of late. MAU MAU - When scrutinizing today's class figure, he will have to register a much better speed figure than last time out to compete in this dirt sprint. RIDE RICHIE RIDE - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance contests in order to wager on him. This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of races around the track. Should be difficult for this entrant to beat this field off of that last speed figure. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class rating, so put him on the possibly overvalued equines list.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - MAXI MOON - At Sam Houston on Jan 22nd this gelding posted a speed figure of 91 in his last race. He has the top last figure in the field.

Thursday CBB Free play. My selection is on the 'under' between James Madison and Northeastern at 7 pm et on Thursday.
The first meeting between these two teams this season totalled 155 points as James Madison rolled to an 89-66 home win. The two teams combined to knock down 24 three-pointers in that contest and the Dukes shot a ridiculous 59% from the field. I expect a different story to unfold in Thursday's rematch. It's been a miserable season for Northeastern, which entered with such high hopes. The Huskies haven't won a game since way back on December 7th. They've been fairly competitive here at home, however, where high-scoring games have by no means been the norm. Their home games have seen regulation time totals of 97, 122, 143, 158, 148, 144, 138, 122 and 142 points. James Madison enters this game having lost four of its last five games overall and will look to turn things around after giving up 85+ points in three consecutive games. You would have to go back nine games to find the last time Northeastern touched 70 points in regulation time so the Huskies figure to be an ideal bounce-back opponent for the Dukes here.
