Bet on her to win and place.

Gulfstream Park Selections for February 4, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

The end of the week has arrived with a healthy thoroughbred card at BetOnline. There are 13 race tracks available for wagering at the BetOnline racebook on Friday. It was a sweep in our book yesterday at Aqueduct Racetrack, with four winners and two scratches for no losses.

Horse racing is the most volatile form of sports betting. There are going to be very good and very bleak days, which are impossible to avoid if you regularly bet the ponies.

The goal is to be ahead consistently in the long-term. That’s what we’ve been doing, so it has been a winning endeavor over the last two years.

This isn’t a big stakes day or weekend for that matter. Turf Paradise has two small $35,000 stakes races, and then there are three $250,000 Grade 3 races on Saturday. Plenty of events, just not for the biggest money.

We are heading to Florida at Gulfstream Park for our first look on the track Friday. Gulfstream has ten races worth $374,000 on the card. Head below for our best Gulfstream Park picks on February 4, 2022.

The second race at Gulfstream Park consists of 5 ½ furlongs for a $28,000 purse. Look for Shez Reckless and Twenty One Short to battle on the outside for the win.

Shez Reckless has finished 1st, 8th, 5th, 6th, 3rd in five attempts and has to be in the mix. In her last race, Shez Reckless showed 3rd for a $28,000 purse.

This was after 6th in the $64,500 Showtime Deb Stakes on November 6 at Hawthorne. The class drop helped put the filly back into competitive standing.

Twenty One Short is 1st, 2nd, 6th in three attempts. She had the hot hand as a rookie on November 5. Twenty One Short came up boldly for a 14 ¼ length blowout in a $26,000 assignment.

That was much too easy for Twenty One Short. In her next showing, Twenty One Short placed 2nd behind Anna’s Dream by 1 ½ lengths for $39,000, and then most recently 6th in the same grade on December 29.

A slide down to the $28,000 level should give Twenty One Short a big chance on these terms. This field doesn’t appear ready to compete versus her talent.

Race 9 covers a mile for a $61,000 purse on Friday afternoon in Hallandale Beach. Iron Works and American Icon should have a big presence in the stretch for a win in the feature on Friday.

Iron Works should put on a strong run for back-to-back wins in the first two races of his career. He made his debut on January 8 and scored a 4 length win for $60,000.

Iron Works drew off going into the stretch for an impressive first-time outing for Todd Pletcher’s colt. The $550,000 trainee has been doing well in workouts as well to set up a chance for another win.

American Icon is another Pletcher trainee with claims for a win. He was hot on debut with an 8 ½ length win for $60,000 on December 26. American Icon had the lead out of the gate and didn’t stray for a wire-to-wire victory.

A repeat performance for the $400,000 colt should put him at the front. Pletcher has two good horses in this one, with his American Icon likely prevailing.

The final event at Gulfstream goes for a mile on the turf early Thursday evening. Blue Twirlin and Conundrum Queen should have an above-average opportunity at a win.

Blue Twirlin is winless in four races, going 8th, 4th, 5th, 5th in her career. She stands a better chance after the class drop. In her last trip, Blue Twirlin finished 5th for a $43,000 purse on January 12.

That’s a good representative of where Blue Twirlin has been in all four of her attempts. Dropping to $32,000 should help plenty.

Conundrum Queen is in for a class drop Friday as well. She has finished 8th, 5th in two attempts. As a rookie, Conundrum Queen went 8th in a $72,000 event on August 30.

She came back on March 27 after a transfer from Saratoga to Gulfstream. It was better, but more was required. Conundrum Queen settled for 5th in a $55,000 race.

Conundrum Queen went on a lengthy layoff and appears in better shape now. Expect the $110,000 filly to get her career back on track with this one Friday.

BetOnline has a big card on Friday with 13 racecourses available for wagering. You can take your choice from the east to the west coast on Friday afternoon and evening. Don’t go off looking for big-stakes races because that is not what you’re going to locate.

There are two small $35,000 stakes events at Turf Paradise, which aren’t worth getting into. We are looking at two racecourses on the Friday card. Gulfstream Park is in action in Florida. They are coming off the running of the Pegasus World Cup last weekend.

Santa Anita Park is running nine races, four on the dirt and five on the turf in California. There is $458,000 in prize money available on the card. Head below for our best Santa Anita Park picks on February 4, 2022.

Race 1 is a unique race on the downhill turf for a $50,000 purse. Red King and Moody Jim could get into it in the final furlong.

Red King is 8 for 37 in his career with plenty of experience on the graded level. There are 11 graded races on his resume, with two wins on June 21, 2020 and August 22, 2020.

In his most recent graded race, Red King finished 7th in the $200,000 John Henry Championship Stakes (Gr. 2) on October 2. After that one, he dropped to an allowance optional claiming race.

Red King beat Midnight Tea Time by 1 length in a $74,000 assignment on November 7. At $50,000 on Friday, he has to be within shouting distance.

Moody Jim is 3 for 7 in his career, with the gelding finishing 1st, 11th, 1st in his last three. He is coming off a strong 2 ½ length win for a $46,000 purse after going 11th in the $300,000 Hollywood Derby (Gr. 1) on November 30.

That outing in the Hollywood Derby was following a win by a nose for a $51,000 purse. Back down in class, Moody Jim should be back in contention. However, Red King should be a touch too tough. I like Red King in a mini upset.

Race 5 is another race on the grass at Santa Anita Park. The best look in this one is likely at Rifey and Wilder Than Most.

Rifey has been in decent shape through six career races. He’s finished 1st, 1st, 5th, 5th in his last three, going 2 for 6 in his career.

In his most recent winning trip, Rifey found a $55,000 win by a half-length on December 10. Then he went stakes racing and dropped off the track.

Rifey is coming off a 5th place loss in the $150,000 Don Valpredo California Cup Sprint on January 15. That was a good sign to seek an easier race on Friday.

Wilder Than Most is 2 for 7 in his career with a winning performance on December 27. He’s coming off a $69,000 win in that showing. Wilder Than Most cleared easily by 5 ¼ lengths.

Prior to that win, Wilder Than Most finished 4th on November 3 for a $72,000 prize. The slight class drop helped out him in the winner’s circle.

He was the favorite in that $72,000 assignment, so the bounce back to form was good. Expect Wilder Than Most to go back to the winner’s circle with a similar performance from his most recent.

The co-feature at Santa Anita Park covers 1 ⅛ miles in another turf play this afternoon. Evening Sun and Offlee Naughty should be tough runners in this outing.

Evening Sun is 2 for 11 in his career and has finished 8th, 1st, 4th in his previous three attempts. Evening Sun had a win two races back on August 21 at Del Mar.

It was a half-length win for a $72,000 purse for a solid showing, but couldn’t sustain his winning ways on Halloween. Evening Sun was 4th in a $65,000 purse.

He can just be too inconsistent to fully trust, but has the talent to compete again. Offlee Naughty on the far outside should have a big try in this one.

Offlee Naughty is 2 for 6 and has finished 1st, 4th, 1st in his previous three attempts. The colt is coming off a win by a neck in a $72,000 event.

It was his second win in three attempts after a $61,000 win on October 3. Offlee Naughty looks like a solid value option in Race 7.

1^st race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (5) Scat Brat (A) had a promising debut about a year ago at Aqueduct in a key race where he raced greenly while making a strong middle move. (6) Feathers Road moved from turf to dirt and has a third and a second for Linda Rice. (7) Mr Breadwinner will make his first start for Horatio DePaz who is a very good trainer with first-time starts. (4) Brew Pub has earned more than $122,000 racing at this level with 12 place and show finishes.

6^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (3) Pier Forty (A) broke from the far outside and rallied late on a track that was favoring the inside paths. He got the lead in the stretch and was passed but finished second. (2) High Tide moved from turf to dirt last time and finished third at this level. Dylan Davis stays on board. (4) Confectioner brings two career wins to this first try in the starter allowance level while most of the field has just one victory. (1) Master Candy Ride returns from a November layoff when he was second in a N2L claimer at Churchill Downs where he was claimed from Kenny McPeek for $50,000 by Linda Rice.

8^th race [OC 62k/N2X, 1 1/8 mi] – (1) Hammerin Aamer (C) is the winner of 3 out of his last 4 starts with the most recent score for a $40,000 tag earning his best speed figure when he was bet down from 5-1 to 2-1. (5) Prioritize (B) was claimed for $62,500 by Rudy Rodriguez when he was unpreprared for the start and got far behind in a race that had a very slow early pace. (6) Mystic Night drops out of a try in a stakes race and he does his best in these longer two-turn races. (4) Tiergan ran third at this level two races back with the rest of his recent starts coming in NY-bred stakes.

9^th race [NY, 25000, 1 mi] – (6) Phenomenal Woman was fifth in a maiden special weight and drops back down to this level where she finished third and was claimed by current high percentage trainer Juan Vasquez. (3) Inouaintalkintome finished second and then third in her two starts at this level since moving from turf to dirt at Aqueduct. (4) Reeley Psyched was second in a similar spot when stretching out in distance to the one-turn mile. (7) Mondeuse returns from a September layoff and moves from turf to dirt for a trainer who wins for a 43% clip with that move. He had plenty of early speed in his grass races.
Best bets: Pier Forty (6^th); Phenomenal Woman (9^th). Best value: Scat Brat (1^st); Hammerin Aamer (8^th).

The Equibase Speed Figure of 80 from his latest affair looks decent in here. YES ITSA STAR - With a reliable 74 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Must be given consideration for this event if only for the competitive speed figure recorded in the last race. LAUNCH LIGHT DREAM - Rodriguez's return on investment over the last month automatically makes this animal a very strong contender. Must be carefully examined - I like the numbers from the last affair.

BROOKYS TAPIT - Believe in this horse. No other viable pace gives this horse a strong chance at the winner's circle. McCanna adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a pretty big improvement. Just check out his latest figure, 70. That one fits well in this bunch. HANS GRUBER - A big drop down in Equibase class figure points from his Jan 16th race at Golden Gate Fields. Based on that data point, I will give this animal the edge. Coming off a sixth place finish at Golden Gate Fields, some may pass this horse. I'm not. He just missed hitting the show spot, and has pretty good odds today. WILL IS CHILL - Have to give this gelding a good shot. Ran a sharp outing last time out within the last month. Looked very good in last race at Golden Gate Fields. A quick turnaround means Wong thinks he can do it again. Ayuso rode this entrant for the initial time last time out and comes right back today. This gelding's last speed rating is good enough to triumph here, I'll bet on him right back this time around. ROYAL 'N RANDO - Have to make this gelding a solid contender; he comes off a good effort on Jan 14th.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 UNUSUAL CODE (ML=6/1), #7 DIMMI QUANDO (ML=6/1), #3 DOUBLE THE GOLD (ML=6/1),

UNUSUAL CODE - Earned a disappointing speed fig last time around the track in a Starter Allowance race on January 15th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure. DIMMI QUANDO - Doubtful that the speed figure he garnered on Jan 22nd will hold up in this race. DOUBLE THE GOLD - Speed ratings tell a narrative of decreasing form. The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's event. Mark this horse as a likely underlay.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - WILL IS CHILL - One of the class angles that my buddy Solo and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This thoroughbred is tops in my book.
