Top Horse Racing Picks for Tuesday, February 8, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

I kicked off my Tuesday horse racing picks with an 8/1 sleeper at Mahoning Valley Race Course, a 6/1 underdog at Parx Racing, and another sleeper at Sunland Park.

Sure, I found some solid morning-line favorites to back, but overall, Tuesday is one of those longer-odds days my bankroll seems to enjoy.

Remember to check out the entire race-cards for each of the three tracks at our recommended online racebooks.

          Good luck!
Tuesday’s Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

Let’s begin on the main track with race two, a 5-1/2 furlong allowance race for three-year-olds that have never won two races. My money’s on the 8/1 sleeper, Goodbyellowbrickrd, ridden by Joey R. Martinez.

In an unimpressive seven-horse field like this one, it’s tough to pick the entry least likely to lose, but I think that horse could very well be Goodbyellowbrickrd.

The colt finished in the money seven of his eight career starts, winning one. For comparison, the morning-line favorite, Steinbeck, moneyed one of his six starts, winning one.

Jeffrey Skerrett trains Goodbyellowbrickrd for owner Danielle Agnello.

Race four is a 1-3/16 miles claiming race on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward. Bet on whichever of the 1/1A coupled entries enters the starting gate (Sonny Leon is listed as jockey for both).

The front half of the coupled entry, Storm Risk, moneyed 13 of his 32 career starts, winning eight. The second half, Cosmic Treasure, finished ten of his 14 career starts in the money, winning five.

If both are in the race but are no longer coupled entries for some reason, bet on the 1A horse—Cosmic Treasure.

Elliot Sullivan trains both Storm Risk and Cosmic Treasure for owner Bruno Schickedanz.

Race eight is a six-furlong allowance race on the dirt track for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward that have never won three races. I’m betting my two dollars on the 4/1 underdog, Out for Fun, with Christian P. Pilares in the irons.

This three-year-old filly finished five of her six career starts in the money, winning two, including the Emerald Necklace Stakes (Black Type) at Thistledown in October.
Out for Fun has since finished second in the Glacial Princess Stakes in November, and third in the Joshua Radosevich Memorial Stakes (Black Type) in December, both at Mahoning Valley.

Regularly ranked in the top 100 trainers for wins since 2002, Robert M. Gorham trains Out for Fun for owner Marion F. Gorham.
          Tuesday Picks for Parx Racing

We’ll begin on the main track with race seven, a seven-furlong starter allowance race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m calling this race for one of the fourth-favored entries (there are four at 6/1 in this race): Federal Case, ridden by Dexter Haddock.

This six-year-old gelding moneyed 15 of his 32 career starts, winning seven. In 2019 he finished second in the Hutcheson Stakes (Gr. 3) at Gulfstream Park and third in the Robert Hilton Memorial Stakes (Black Type) at Charles Town.

Jaime Bravo-Estrada trains Federal Case for owner Roberto Orantes.

Race eight is a one mile and 70 yards claiming race on the main track for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I agree with the morning line: Bet your money on the 2/1 favorite, Owen’s Pleasure, with Ruben Silvera aboard.

This four-year-old filly moneyed nine of her 14 career starts, winning three. She notably finished third in the Northern Lights Debutante Stakes in 2020 and second last July in the Frances Genter Stakes (Black Type), both at Canterbury Park.

Ranked in the top 100 for wins, earnings, or both since 2007, Jamie Ness trains Owen’s Pleasure for owner Peter D. Mattson.

Race nine is a one-mile allowance optional claiming race on the main track for three-year-olds that have never won two races. I’m calling this race for the second-favored (at 7/2) Practical Coach, ridden by newcomer Jose Antonio Gomez.

This colt finished in the money four of his five career starts, winning one. He notably finished third in the Smoke Glacken Stakes (Black Type) in September at Monmouth Park, right after winning his initial maiden attempt.
With his stats—and the advantage of Gomez’ apprentice weight allowance—Practical Coach should have no problem finding his way to the winner’s circle.

Breeders’ Cup veteran Robert E. Reid, Jr. trains Practical Coach for owners Cash is King LLC and LC Racing.
My Tuesday Picks for Sunland Park

We’re starting on the main track with race two, a five-furlong claiming race for New Mexico-bred three-year-olds and upward that have never won two races. I’m betting my money on the 8/1 sleeper, Go Red Rascal, piloted by newcomer Jose Miguel Vazquez.

This gelding moneyed both of his career starts, last month finishing third in his initial maiden attempt and then graduating (in a field of eleven) on his second attempt.

Guadalupe Munoz, Jr. trains Go Red Rascal for owner-breeder Esteban Morales.

Race five is a 6-1/2 furlong allowance race on the main track for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races.

You’re going to see plenty of competition in this race, but I’m sticking with the 9/5 morning-line favorite, Line Call, ridden by Rigo Sarmiento.

A real stand-out in a tight field of six, this four-year-old filly moneyed six of her eleven career starts, winning three, including the New Mexico Classic Cup Oaks Championship Stakes (Black Type) last October and the New Mexico Classic Cup Lassie Championship Stakes (Black Type) in 2020, both at Zia Park.
Line Call isn’t the only entry in this horse race with experience at the stakes level, but she’s the one that has enjoyed the most success at it.

Nancy Summers trains Line Call for owner Margaret V. Bloss.

Race six is a 6-1/2 furlong allowanced race on the main track for New Mexico-bred four-year-olds and upward that have never won three races. This race is my no-brainer pick of the day: 2/1 morning-line favorite Cheese Tray, with Aldo Arboleda in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding finished in the money eleven of his 13 career starts, winning two. Even before he graduated the maiden class in December 2020, he finished third in both the Rio Grande Senor Thoroughbred Futurity (Black Type) at Ruidoso Downs and the New Mexico Classic Cup Juvenile Championship Stakes (Black Type) at Zia Park.

In 2021, Cheese Tray moneyed the Road Runner Stakes, the Casino at the Downs Thoroughbred Derby, and the New Mexico Classic Cup Derby Championship Stakes (Black Type).

Top-ranked Todd W. Fincher trains Cheese Tray for owners/breeders J. Kirk Robison and Judy Robison.

Today's Horse Racing Tips: Tuesday February 8th

            Today’s Racing Tips – February 8th

There are three race meetings in the UK on Tuesday, with jumps action from Market Rasen and Taunton. All-weather fans have the twilight card at Southwell to study, with the lights coming on at 4.55pm.
SELECTION Track Time (UK) Horse ODDS
DAILY NAP Market Rasen 1:35PM Hometown Hero 2.37
VALUE ANGLE Market Rasen 2:45PM Storm of Light 3.75

Best odds available as at 4pm February 7th 2021. Odds may now differ.
            Today’s Daily Nap

            Hometown Hero

            Market Rasen 1:35 pm

Dan Skelton’s heavy ground point winner has stepped forward run to run in three starts over hurdles so far, and there should be plenty more improvement to come as he becomes more settled (shade free early but stayed on well up the straight when second at Ludlow last time out). This decent ground should be ideal, and a much more positive ride is on the cards now with
a positive ride always a plus at Market Rasen.
            Today’s Value Angle

            Brown Bullet

            Market Rasen 2:45 pm

Olly Murphy’s unexposed performer made a good start in handicaps when a staying on third at Leicester, and this step up to 2m7f should bring about plenty more improvement. He was sent off a well backed 9/4f form a potentially lenient opening mark, but never landed a blow from rear out wide, finishing with running left in the tank and pulling twelve lengths clear of the rest.

                  Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                  Penn National - Race #4
                  Picks Notes
#5 Buff and Shine He was no match for a tougher group last out when a distant third, but he is a better fit here and will likely land another good trip right near the top. Tough here.
#2 Chain Reaction Finisher has shown a bit better since dropping to this level a couple starts back, but I worry he's not going to get the right kind of setup from off the splits today. Capable, but he's probably an underlay with these.
#1 News Item He took some cash in the debut when sent to post at 5/2, and maybe he sticks around a bit better with that race under his belt. Would probably want something better than the 7/2 ML price.
Race Summary Buff and Shine will get bet here, but he should be able to handle this short bunch. There isn't a whole lot signed on in here, and something like the debut run would probably do the trick.

                  Penn National - Race #6
                  Picks Notes
#6 Archer's Hall She turned in a big maiden score when stepping up to special weight company last time out, and she should be able to land a perfect trip right near the top. She still has a bit of upside with just three starts to her credit.
#7 Pretty Edgy Forward player fits well here, but she has had plenty of chances at this level already, so I wouldn't want to sign on here at too short a price. Capable underlay.
#5 Determined Love She steps up in decent form with a nice score against cheaper last time out, and her positional pace should leave her in the great spot turning for home. Not impossible.
Race Summary Archer's Hall might still have some room to move forward after just three starts, and her last two have been significant steps in the right direction. Let's see if she can maintain that momentum here.

                  Penn National - Race #9
                  Picks Notes
#5 Phil the Banker His form is hit or miss, but his best stuff fits well here, and there might be just enough pace signed on in here to give him a chance to rally from off the splits and pick these up late.
#3 Royal Kaz Dropping pace makes a lot of sense here, but I worry that he's going to have just a tiny bit too much company near the top in the early going. Pace threat may be vulnerable late.
#7 Gotanda He went pretty evenly in the local debut last time out, but he's probably capable of something a bit better than that this time around while perhaps offering a bit better price on the board.
Race Summary Phil the Banker doesn't always show up, but the race flow might be just generous enough to give him a chance to settle and rally late with these. He doesn't always back up decent tries but he's intriguing enough on paper here.

                    Dover Downs - Race #1
                    Picks Notes
#4 PERIOD WITH A T Slowed by race shape in otherwise useful return, good value play.
#7 SERENA HANOVER Gets Tetrick for debut for 16-percent barn, watch odds.
#5 BOOM SAUCE Landed minor awards in three straight, draws better post.
Race Summary Somebody has to win this and Period With A T is a wake-up candidate to do so. She was off the gate in her first start this year, raced single-file in the back of the pack through a sloooow opening half, then lacked running room after she gained inside on the final turn. Bet on her to win and place.

                    Western Fair - Race #3
                    Picks Notes
#5 DADS PRINCESS Game try versus short-priced top pair, holds tactical edge.
#8 SWEETEST HUSTLE Sitting on maiden win, outside post the concern.
#7 LANESIDE LOOKOUT Won twice as a 3yo, starts for new barn.
Race Summary Dads Princess held her ground in the pocket against a pair of short-priced favorites as the pace picked up in the third quarter. She finished third but can maximize her speed in this spot. Play 5-7 and 5-8 exactas.

                    Northfield Park - Race #1
                    Picks Notes
#1 RED PINE Troubled third two back, draws rail, could be now or never.
#6 ROYAL ASSASIN Decent numbers, gets class relief, price attached.
#2 DALI SPECIAL Dueled and gave way, can carry speed farther in this field.
Race Summary Red Pine, no threat from a second-tier starting spot against better, finished third at this level in the race prior when he was held up behind stalled cover on the final turn. He galloped out strongly, earning a playback from the rail despite a poor record. Play 1-2, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-2 exactas.

                      Turf Paradise - Race #2
                      Picks Notes
#4 Diiachi Drops out of a mile race and can benefit from chasing a fast pace; should be able finish full of run.
#2 Mr View On the board in his last four and was claimed by Silva stable last out; can be a factor to the end.
#3 Famous Rock Star Set the pace and held on vs. similar last out; pace factor again.
Race Summary Diiachi fast the closing move to warrant attention here; other top contenders will be battling ont he front end, and he could do well in biding his time.

                      Turf Paradise - Race #7
                      Picks Notes
#5 American Bourbon Finished third as the favorite last time and can be a strong player on the front end.
#7 Tiz Wonderfully Tired from early efforts last out and can probably be troublesome from just off the pace.
#9 Lexophilia Closed well for third at Tampa last out and lands in a good spot for her first local start.
Race Summary American Bourbon is dangerous when she gets the lead and can set the pace against these; should be tough to run down.

                      Turf Paradise - Race #8
                      Picks Notes
#7 Blow My Mind Drops out of decent races and can find his way into the mix; seeks his first win in more than a year.
#9 Hermano Lost a photo last tie out and has won two of his last three; in good form and can be effective at this level.
#6 Mr Navigator Has been in stronger races and has battled for the lead in those; the class drop might get him over the top.
Race Summary Blow My Mind has been competitive in decent races and can fight it out for this price.

                          Distance:1 1/16 Miles
                          Purse:$14,400

The first event at Penn National is 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for a $14,400 purse. Look for Happycrest and Positive Power to put up a big fight in this one.

Happycrest is 1 for 46 in her career and has finished 2nd, 2nd, 7th, 3rd in her previous four attempts. In her latest race, Happycrest showed 3rd on October 19 in an $18,800 event.

That was an improvement after finishing 7th on September 27 for a $25,000 race. The drop in class helped and I’m sure an additional drop in grade to $14,400 should help even more.

Positive Power is a one-time winner in 27 races in her career. The mare is 5th, 2nd, 6th in her previous three outings. She placed 2nd behind Golden Grant by 1 length in a $22,785 assignment on November 6.

That was a great run in a tougher class. Positive Power returned to go 6th on December 17 for a $36,690 purse. Given the terms it was an adequate attempt.

This race tonight should give Positive Power a much better opportunity for a win.

                          Purse:$18,100

Race 4 covers 6 furlongs on the dirt for an $18,100 purse. Buff and Shine and Chain Reaction should be in top contention to get home in this race.

Buff and Shine has finished 2nd, 3rd, in three attempts. He placed 2nd behind Amigos Guitar by 3 ½ lengths in an $18,100 assignment on December 3.

In his sophomore run, Buff and Shine showed 3rd on January 4 for a $27,100 prize. That was a pretty good race for Buff and Shine at that level.

Down to $18,100, expect Buff and Shine to be in competitive standing. Chain Reaction has been improving in each race since debuting on November 23.

As a first-time runner on November 23, Chain Reaction finished 11th in a $34,000 race. He showed improvement to finish 4th on December 22, and then showed 3rd on January 12 for an $18,100 purse.

Chain Reaction continues to get better and should be tough for this field to deal with if he continues on this road.

                          +600 (6/1)
                          (7) Gotanda
                          +350 (7/2)

                          Post Time: 9:36 p.m. EST
                          Distance:6 Furlongs
                          Purse:$10,800

Race 9 should be a competitive race between Gotanda and Royal Kaz for the top prize. Gotanda is 1 for 6 in his career, with a win back on November 5 at Belmont Park.

Gotanda came through for a $45,000 win by 1 ¼ lengths. That was a promising second run for Gotanda, but might have been a mirage.

Since then, Gotanda has struggled to get close again. In his last race, he finished 4th in a $10,800 race. More is required from Gotanda on Tuesday, but the potential is there.

Royal Kaz is 1 for 15 and looking to get back on track after finishing 6th most recently on December 15 for a $14,400 purse. This was after placing 2nd behind Saponara by 3 ¾ lengths as the favorite.

Royal Kaz was consistently running well, finishing in the top-2 in five of his previous six attempts on November 23. The gelding is still seeing a drop in class to a $10,800 race on Tuesday.

Expect Royal Kaz to get into contention with a good chance of being the best at the wire.
                          The Bet
                          (3) ROYAL KAZ

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

                            Penn National - Race #1 - Post: 6:00pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,400 Class Rating: 73

                            Rating:

                            #1 NABRUZZI (ML=5/2)

NABRUZZI - PP lines show this thoroughbred with three improving speed ratings. Trejos should be on a live horse in today's race.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #4 POSITIVE POWER (ML=3/2), #3 HAPPYCREST (ML=2/1), #2 NOW PRAMELA (ML=8/1),

POSITIVE POWER - Where is the pace? None to be found in here to set things up for this horse. HAPPYCREST - Tough to put any money on this mare on the top end. Likes to land in the money though. When checking today's class rating, she will have to notch a much better speed figure than in the last race to be competitive in this dirt route. NOW PRAMELA - Speed ratings of 53/46/42 are started on a downward course. This less than sharp equine ran a pedestrian fig last time around the track. She shouldn't improve and will probably get beat in today's race running that fig.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #1 NABRUZZI on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
                            EXACTA WAGERS: Pass
