Rocket Picks : Santa Anita and Golden Gate for March 7, 2022
        By: Aaron Halterman

It’s not a holiday; however, we have great racing today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Santa Anita, which runs today to make up for a cancelled racing card on Monday. We will also be covering Golden Gate for the paid Rockets as they have a mandatory pick 6 payout starting in race 4. Let’s all enjoy a “bonus” day of good racing!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Santa Anita:

        Santa Anita March 7, 2022

        Race 5: Maiden Special Weight

#5 Martini Mischief debuts in this spot for Bob Baffert, who seems to be winning every race with these types of horses. #4 Musica was solid on debut, though, and can beat the Baffert first time starter if she moves forward off of that effort.

        Race 6: Starter Optional Claiming

#2 My Summer Dream was a nice winner over this track last time out, and is spotted in a logical race today. #4 Commander Khai moves back over to the turf today, while taking a slight drop in class, which should really help his chances in this spot.

        Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#5 Moos Mitchell gets back to the dirt for this one after a solid effort over the turf last time out. He does have a win over the dirt as well. #6 Quick Buck was an impressive debut winner last time out over this track and at this distance. He looks ready for the next step today.

        Race 8: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Eleuthera was second over this track two starts back, but struggled in her last start. Look for her to bounce back today. #1 Annies Song has hit the board in three straight starts in Southern California, including losing by just a neck last time out.

        THE TICKET

        $.50 Pick 4 (Races 5-8) 4,5 / 2,4 / 4,5,6 / 1,2,8,9 – $24

            Jeff Siegel's Santa Anita Analysis/Workout Commentary - 3/7/22

            March 7, 2022

“What You Need to Know” - Santa Anita
By Jeff Siegel, Handicapper & Analyst

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s Daily Santa Anita Handicapping Analysis, Wagering Strategies, Workout Commentary, and True Odds Calculations (“TOC”) identify those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.
            *
The “TOC” quantifies the findings of a personal thoroughbred analytics program that contains in its database the results of every race contested at Santa Anita since 2004. More than 75 critical factors in the fields of class, distance, surface, age, and sex have created 227 algorithms that are highly specific to the race being handicapped. The result is a probability line that reflects each contender’s true odds based on a pure 100-point takeout.

The “TOC” applies its mathematical formula only to non-maiden races and displays a maximum of four runners considered the most likely contenders to win. Also listed is the specific algorithm’s sample size plus the top-rated horse’s win percentage and return on investment (ROI). It is suggested that the player utilize the program’s findings to compare each contender’s “true odds” with the morning line and/or actual wagering odds to identify potential overlays and underlays.

Also-eligible runners are not included in any of the calculations until verified as actual starters. When possible, adjustments to the “TOC” will be updated after late scratches.

Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play

            RACE 1: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 3-Let’sgetlucky; 7-Hail Freedom

Forecast: Letsgetlucky (TOC=4-1; ML=2-1) has much going for him in this six furlong turf sprint for state-bred first-level allowance sprinters. He’s exiting better races, has the fastest speed figures, and ran very well when second in his only other outing on grass. We’re expecting the B. Koriner-trained son of Munnings to be on or near the lead throughout. Hail Freedom (TOC=8/5; ML=5/2) is the one to fear most. The D. O’Neill-trained colt shows consistent form over the local lawn, retains F. Prat, removes blinkers, and projects to enjoy an ideal stalking trip outside and have every chance from the quarter pole home. These are the two we’ll be using in rolling exotic play with preference on top to Letsgetlucky.

            RACE 2: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
Use (in order of preference): 1-Scream and Shout; 5-Season to Remember

Forecast: We’ll double the second race, a modest restricted (nw-2) $12,500 claiming sprint for fillies and mares. Scream and Shout (TOC=7/5; ML=5/2), a distant second in a fast race in a slightly tougher spot, drops for the money run, has won over the local main track in the past, and should have a strong pace presence from her inside draw. She gets a very slight edge on top over Season to Remember (TOC=3-1; ML=8/5), a runner-up in her last pair in similar company and likely to settle just off the leaders in the second flight and then make her presence felt when the pressure is turned on.

            __________________________________________________ ____________________________

            RACE 3: Post: 1:30 PT Grade: C
Use (in order of preference): 2-Mongolian Legend; 3-Sir Flatter

Forecast: Mongolian Legend (TOC=Evens; ML=8/5) was wide and dull as the favorite in a starter optional ($25,000) claimer last month but against this much easier group of restricted (nw-2) $16,000 foes the D. O’Neill-trained gelding seems likely to snap back to life. His career record (1-for-26) hardly inspires confidence, though. Sir Flatter (TOC=2-1; ML=5-1) stretches out again, but his form suggests he’s better around one turn. On numbers, he’s a fit, so we’ll toss him. In a race that probably is best left alone, we’ll try to get by using just these two in rolling exotic play, but if feel the need to spread deeper, go right ahead.

            RACE 4: Post: 2:07 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference: 1-Cool Acclaim; 9-Just About Enough

Forecast: Cool Acclaim finished a troubled fifth in his debut sprinting on grass earlier this meeting and as a first time gelding and switching to F. Prat seems likely to produce a significant forward move stretching out to a mile in this soft state-bred maiden event. The P. D’Amato barn has solid stats with the second-time starter angle, and with his pedigree suggesting this two-turn trip will be more to his liking the son of Acclamation should be hard to beat. Though he's drawn poorly outside, Just About Enough is worth including on your ticket as well, at least as a back-up or a saver. The M. Glatt-trained gelding doesn’t have much of a closing kick, but if he can drop over, save some ground, secure a mid-pack position and get some cover, he could have a say in the matter.

            __________________________________________________ ____________________________

            RACE 5: Post: 2:43 PT Grade: B+
Use (in order of preference): 5-Martini Mischief; 4-Musica

Forecast: Martini Mischief has trained like a good sort for B. Baffert and looks live and well-meant in this maiden special weight extended sprint for fillies and mares. The daughter of Into Mischief has really never been asked in the a.m. while displaying good speed, so we’re expecting a major performance for barn that hits at an outstanding 28% with debut runners. Main guy Johnny V. takes the call. Musica is the best of the known element and should be included on your ticket, as well. A decent runner-up in her debut in late January, the daughter of Dialed In was worn down late by her next-out winning stablemate in a race that earned a good figure, and she did so despite a slow start, a wide trip, and failing to change leads. Second-time starters from the M. Glatt stable hit at a strong 20% while producing a flat-bet profit, so this daughter of Dialed In is very likely to produce a forward move.

            Notable Workouts:

Martini Mischief (February 27, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:00.1hg). Grade: B
IN blinkers from the gate, stumbled at the start, recovered to display good speed while under a tight hold, continued well throughout without being asked and proved clearly best inside unraced (Molto Vita, worked under dam’s name, 5f, 1:00.2hg), splits of :23.4, :35.2, :47.1 and 1:00.1, something left late, rather nice. Daughter of Into Mishief appears plenty fit and should be a live item first crack out of the box for B. Baffert.

            __________________________________________________ ____________________________

            RACE 6: Post: 3:17 PT Grade: B-
Use (in order of preference): 5-Cherubic Factor ; 2-My Summer Dream; 4-Commander Khai

Forecast: Cherubic Factor (TOC=3-1; ML-7/2) is racing in good form, has a prior win over this course and distance, and is solid in the speed figure department, so let’s put the P. Eurton-trained gelding on top in this starter optional claimer for older horses. A prototype late-running sprinter, the four-year-old gelding finished a willing third in a similar affair in late January in a race that was flattered when Cotapaxi came back to win again. My Summer Dream (TOC=7/2; ML=3-1) won a grass sprint vs. maiden $50,000 foes in mid-January and is protected today in a sign of confidence. The J. Mullins-trained gelding should settle just off the leaders and have dead aim when set down for the drive. Commander Khai (TOC=5-1; ML=4-1) always has been vulnerable under pressure, but he adds blinkers as the likely controlling speed in his first start since returning from Oaklawn Park and shows a series of sharp recent workouts at San Luis Rey Downs to have him fit and ready. The R. Baltas-trained gelding could take this field a long way if he can shake loose without having to be sent hard.

            __________________________________________________ ____________________________
            __________________________________________________ ____________________________

            RACE 7: Post: 3:49 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 6-Quick Buck; 2-Franklin One Star

Forecast: Quick Buck (TOC=Evens; ML=4-1) was a stylish debut winner over this track and distance last month and appears capable of winning on the raise in this state-bred optional claimer that finds him drawn comfortably outside in the field of six. The M. Glatt-trained gelding may be quick enough to make the lead, though the option is there to stalk and pounce should the pace flow dictate that strategy. Though we’re not quite sure why, Johnny V. takes over for F. Prat. Franklin One Star (TOC=9/2; ML=5/2) returns to dirt and won his only start on the main track in his debut in December at Los Alamitos, so the surface switch should not be a concern. The Danzing Candy gelding had a rough trip when a willingly third in a turf sprint last time out and should be capable of better today with a clean trip.

            __________________________________________________ ____________________________
            __________________________________________________ ____________________________

            RACE 8: Post: 4:22 PT Grade: B
Use (in order of preference): 9-Rhea Moon ; 2-Eleuthera; 8-Duvet Day

Forecast: The finale is a maiden turf miler for sophomore fillies that requires a spread in rolling exotic play. Let’s try to beat morning line favorite Annie’s Song, who just failed to seal the deal at even money in a similar affair last time out despite having every chance with a perfect trip. You can use her if you like. Rhea Moon has trained well for her U.S. debut for P. D’Amato, whose record with these Euro-imports has been outstanding (24% off the plane). She gets F. Prat and Lasix and hit the board in both of her starts last summer overseas. Outside post and all, she’s the one to beat. Eleuthera removes blinkers, returns to the maiden ranks, where she belongs. She has been the victim of some strange race management decisions by her connections (sprinting on dirt vs. colts, really?) but she continues to train well, so we suspect the daughter of Square Eddie hasn’t shown anywhere near her best form just yet. Duvet Day finished in a dead-head with Annie’s Song last time out but may have more upside and seems likely to continue her improving pattern as she acclimates. The Irish-bred filly should be running on strongly through the lane. .

            Notable Workouts:

Rhea Moon (February 20, Santa Anita, 5f, 1:02.2h TT). Grade: B-
Worked outside Virulente (same time) in training track drill for P. D’Amato and was even but best while finishing under a tight hold and with plenty left, final half mile on our watches in :24.1 and :49.1. Hit the board in two Irish outings last summer in good company and should be extremely live with maidens in her U.S. debut. Decent type, at least.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Parx Racing - Race #7
              Picks Notes
#6 Penance Think she's going to be in line for a great trip from close range, and she's quick enough to have a go of things up top if nobody else asserts early. Slight rating gear benefits her as well.
#9 Charity Stripe She has a big claim on this one while dropping out of starter company, but she's probably going to be the chalk in here and is bringing dull form with her out of a couple recent tries with better.
#4 Sugar Streak Her form can be a bit hit or miss, but her best stuff stacks up well here with some pretty solid finishing running lines to her credit. Worry that she's not going to be a really fair price, though.
Race Summary Penance might be the right one in here at what is probably a square enough price, as she has some pace and a mild rating gear, and she's a really good fit with this kind of company right now.

              Parx Racing - Race #8
              Picks Notes
#9 Backsideofthemoon Tactical speed was competitive with stakes company in New York a couple starts back, and she can probably move forward a little bit off that local debut last time out. Dangerous.
#7 Brooklyn Strong Nothing to write home about in the recent form, but he brings by far the classiest running lines in this group, and maybe this kind of company will allow him to show something better while making his first start as a 4yo.
#3 Splicethemainbrace Speed will meet a tougher bunch this time around, but he's a pretty reliable type over the local footing and is almost sure to have a go for it on the front end. Chance to hang around.
Race Summary Backsideofthemoon should get a great trip in here, but I wouldn't want too short a price on that one with a long winless streak. That said, it looks like his race to lose.

              Picks Notes
#4 Jakarta She's going to take some cash in here, but she looks tough to get past with a recent class edge on these, as well as what appears to be a significant pace edge on some of the other logical players. Runs these off their feet?
#10 Club Car She is another who brings some pretty solid recent company lines, and it looks like the classy, quick top two here should have control of this one. Top choice gets the big jump on her.
#5 Cinnabunny Tactical speed landed a Remington stakes try when last seen in September, and she's not a bad fit with this group if she can come back running off the bench. Probably needs a misfire or two to get the best of the top pair.
Race Summary Jakarta and Club Car are logical and look tough in here, but Jakarta appears to be the controlling pace in this spot, and that will likely give her a bit enough tactical edge to hold off Club Car late.

                Today’s Racing Tips – March 7th

There are four meetings in Britain and Ireland on Monday, with jumps action coming from Leopardstown, Southwell and Wetherby. All-weather fans have a competitive twilight card at Wolverhampton to get studying, with the lights coming on at 5.30pm.

                Jens Georgie

                Wetherby 1:45pm

Sam Drinkwater’s filly has shown a modicum of promise in two runs over hurdles this winter, and has been found a very weak looking maiden hurdle here under the talented claimer Danny Burton. This increased test of stamina should suit ideally at Wetherby on Monday, and a more positive ride is on the cards against some opposable rivals.

                Odds: 19.00

                Wetherby 2:20pm

Henry Oliver’s maiden hurdler has hinted at better to come on a couple of occasions this season, often dropped out in rear in relatively fair company in the south. He now makes his chasing debut in a shockingly weak race, and really should be getting competitive from such a lowly mark if he can jump fluently at the first time of asking.

                Odds: 13.00

Odds are best odds available as at 10pm March 6th 2022. Odds may now differ.

                  By: Racing and Sports

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Cowra and York.

                  COWRA: RACE 7 @ 5:50 PM

CALMER KARMA (2) resumes off the all-the-way debut win at Nowra. Has trialled well at Warwick Farm and is sure to have come on. Should have the early speed to cross-over efficiently and will take beating. HOT AS HELL (4) led and won the Maiden at Tamworth and can build on that drawn for a soft run. Each way. RONNY ROCK ART (5) draws well and go on the Goulburn placing two-back. Peaks and is a genuine chance. LAFFING WATERS (8) won the Maiden at Dubbo by a space. Has the 2kg claim and isn't drawn as wide after scratchings. Has scope for more improvement.
                  SELECTIONS: With Calmer Karma.

                  YORK: RACE 7 @ 5:08 PM
AL MAGICO (4) missed a lip at Belmont in much stronger than this and then things didn't work out there after same grade. Draws for a soft run and despite the weight lift should be winning. IZZY MAY (8) was good winning the 46 at Belmont two-back and then got too far back placing at Mt Barker. He is well in the mix on the 8-day return. REACTION (6) will find this easier than Ascot and is in the mix. SUPER TEROITOA (2) needed the run first up. Has won second-up and draws to advantage with a 4kg claim. Can't be ruled out.
                  SELECTIONS: Backing Al Magico.

Golden Gate Fields Selections for March 7, 2022 – Horse Racing Picks

The weekday card opens on Monday after a profitable weekend on the racetrack. The stakes racing at Santa Anita Park was a major success, including the $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (Gr. 2) and $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap (Gr. 1).

                      Industry Leading 9% Cashback!

BetOnline has four racecourses available for wagering on the thoroughbred circuit Monday afternoon and into the evening hours. It’s rare to see Santa Anita Park going on a Monday, but we’re spoiled with a card in Arcadia to open the week.

Golden Gate Fields is also operating in California on Monday. Louisiana Downs is a fifth track offering action, though this is a quarter horse meeting.

For our first look on Monday, we’ll check out what’s going on at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley. Golden Gate has nine races worth $178,500 on Monday.

Head below for our best Golden Gate Fields picks on March 7, 2022.

                      Distance: 1 1/16 Miles
                      Purse:$21,000

Race 3 is a $21,000 assignment covering 1 1/16 miles on the synthetic track. Look at A Man’s Man and Final Final to show up well in this one.

                      A Man’s Man is a one-time winner in eight events, with a victory on March 1, 2020. A Man’s Man won that by 3 ¼ lengths in a $55,000 race.

Since then, A Man’s Man is winless in four straight outings. He is coming off a disappointing bid on February 4.

A Man’s Man finished 9th for a $31,000 purse. This was after showing 3rd on January 9 in a $31,000 assignment. A drop in class looks smart.

Final Final is 3 for 30 in his career, finishing 1st, 1st, 2nd, 6th, 4th in his previous five attempts. The gelding should be involved here.

In his last win, he defeated Push Through by ¾ lengths in an $18,000 assignment. Then Final Final ran into some choppy waters recently.

He finished 4th most recently in a $21,000 event on February 18. Final Final should appreciate 1 1/16 miles more than a mile. Conversely, A Man’s Man should weaken at this distance.

In a very minor upset, look for Final Final to beat the favorite in Race 3.

                      Distance: 6 Furlongs
                      Purse:$22,000

Race 7 is a 6-furlong event for a $22,000 purse on Monday. This one should see Heaven Shines and Artemus Gordon battle it out for the top prize.

Heaven Shines is 1st, 5th, 9th, 3rd, 2nd in five races. The gelding has the poise to strike in Race 7.

In his most recent attempt, he placed 2nd behind Northvale Road by 1 ¾ lengths in a $22,000 race. That was acceptable after showing 3rd on August 8 in a $27,000 race.

Artemus Gordon is 2nd, 2nd, 4th, 1st in four starts. He is coming off a 2 ¾ length win for $39,000 on February 13.

Artemus Gordon was expected to run well there and delivered. Down in class to $22,000, there isn’t a lot not to like about the No. 2.

                      Distance:1 1/16 Miles
                      Purse:$32,000

Race 8 is 1 1/16 miles for a $32,000 purse. Tesoro and Tom’s Surprise should have a presence in the stretch.

Tesoro is 2 for 9 and is a model of consistency. He is 1st, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd in five races going into Monday.

Five races back, Tesoro beat Space Odessey for a $31,000 win. While Tesoro hasn’t returned to the winner’s circle, he is consistent and 2nd in three in a row.

In his latest race, he placed behind Tom’s Surprise by a neck. Tom’s Surprise should be tough again in this one.

                      He is 8 for 19 and 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st in his last four. Tom’s Surprise looks for a hat-trick following a $31,000 and $32,000 win.

He won by 5 ½ lengths and then just nipped Tesoro by a neck on February 12. More of the same form should result in more wins.

Golden Gate Fields - Race #9 - Post: 4:37pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,000 Class Rating: 70

                              #3 NORTH SEA (ML=5/2)
                              #4 THE CALABRESE KID (ML=4/1)

NORTH SEA - Was in a Maiden Special race at Golden Gate Fields in the last race. That affair had a class number of 83 and he is moving down in this race. A certain win candidate. Gelding is a few starts into a comeback here. Should give a top effort today. This horse brings in a lot of cash per race around the track. I believe he can add to the lifetime bankroll right here in this race. THE CALABRESE KID - A thoroughbred coming back this quickly after a strong race is a good omen. This gelding is rounding his way back into shape. Should perform well today.

                              Vulnerable Contenders: #5 WORD OF WARNING (ML=9/2), #6 INTO BOURBON (ML=5/1), #1 MORPHY (ML=6/1),

WORD OF WARNING - Would have to get much more than the M/L odds of 9/2 to invest in this animal. INTO BOURBON - Not easy to play this mount this time out. Make him show you something in a sprint event before you wager on him in a race of 6 furlongs. The result of fourth in the last affair shows me that this animal may be losing physical conditioning. MORPHY - The seventh place finish in the last affair was not the greatest. Improbable that the speed figure he earned on Feb 13th will be enough in this race.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - NORTH SEA - Comparing last speed ratings in this field, nobody beats this gelding. Tops in the field with a last speed rating of 63 on February 5th.
