Top Horse Racing Picks for Thursday, March 10, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

You’ll see that I found plenty of underdog moneymakers at the three tracks I chose for my Thursday horseracing picks: Charles Town Races, Gulfstream Park, and Sam Houston Park.

I’ve even recommended a value show bet at Sam Houston.

Before you dive into my picks for Thursday, don’t forget to check out the full race-cards for all three tracks at one of our top online racebooks.

          Good luck!
Thursday Picks for Charles Town Races

Let’s start on the dirt track with race one, a 6-1/2 furlong claiming run for West Virginia-bred three-year-olds that have never won three races. I’m calling this race for the 6/1 underdog, Crossthebay, ridden by veteran jockey Keimar Trotman.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed six of his eleven career starts, winning two. I like him because he’s performed better in allowance races than the morning-line favorite has.

Anthony M. Rideoutt II trains Crossthebay for Shuler Stables LLC.

Race three is a 4-1/2 furlong allowance race for three-year-olds and upward that have never won three races (West Virginia-bred races not considered for eligibility).

While this race might look like a walk for the 6/5 morning-line favorite, I like the second favored (at 9/5) Pete the Beast, with top jockey Arnaldo Bocachica in the irons.

This five-year-old gelding moneyed all three of his career starts, winning his two most recent runs, including his maiden victory and an allowance race, both here at Charles Town. He posted comparatively high speed figures for all three of his races.

Longtime horseracing veteran Jeff C. Runco trains Pete the Beast for Rockingham Ranch. Runco put Bocachica aboard for both of Pete the Beast’s wins.

Race seven is a 1-1/8 mile allowance race on the dirt track for three-year-olds and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the 2/1 second-favored Ratify, piloted by Jevian Toledo.
This five-year-old gelding finished ten of his 17 career starts in the money, winning three.

While Ratify has the better statistical record, he’ll need to work hard to overcome the favorite’s proven record in the longer distances.

Ranked in the top 100 for both wins and earnings in 2021, Brittany T. Russell trains Ratify for her own BTR Racing, Inc. and for Robert C. Pruet, Jr.
My Thursday Picks for Gulfstream Park

We’ll begin on the dirt track with race two, a one-mile starter allowance race for four-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 9/5 morning-line favorite, Embrace My Uncle, with top jockey Javier Castellano in the irons.

This five-year-old gelding finished in the money 12 of his 23 career starts, winning four. In this particular six-horse field, that makes him the star. In 2022, he’s moneyed both his starts, winning one.

With more than thirty years in the horseracing business, Michael P. De Paulo trains Embrace My Uncle for owner Anthony DiPaola.

Let’s move to the turf course for race seven, a five-furlong allowance optional claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 6/1 underdog, Richies Great Girl, ridden by Junior Alvarado.

This five-year-old mare finished in the money 13 of her 17 career starts, winning seven, which gives her a statistical record vastly superior to that of Phantom Vison, the morning-line favorite.
Richies Great Girl has her work cut out for her, but it will help that turf has not been Phantom Vision’s best friend.

Larry Rivelli trains Richies Great Girl for owner-breeder Richard Ravin.

Race eight puts us back on the dirt track for a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-old fillies. My money’s on the 7/2 second-favored Frosty Brew, ridden by Javier Castellano.

This filly finished two of her three career starts in the money, her only miss was a ninth-place finish in the Frizette Stakes (Grade I) at Belmont Park in October.

Her two money finishes give her better stats than the rest of this eight-horse field—with one exception: the 5/1 underdog Rapturous. That could make the race quite tight indeed, but I believe Frosty Brew will prevail.

Forty-year horseracing veteran Claude R. McGaughey III trains Frosty Brew for Magic Cap Stables.
Thursday’s Picks for Sam Houston Park

Let’s start on the dirt track for race six, a six-furlong allowance run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Take Charge Woman, piloted by Ry Eikleberry.

This five-year-old mare doesn’t have the best stats in this eight-horse field, but she does show the best improvement in her brief career. For the record, Take Charge Woman moneyed 13 of her 24 career starts, winning four, including her two most recent.
In fact, three of her four wins have occurred in the last 90 days. And Take Charge Woman has failed to money a race exactly once in her last seven starts. She’ll do.

Karl Broberg trains Take Charge Woman for his own End Zone Athletics, Inc.

We’ll move to the turf for race seven, a one-mile allowance optional claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the second-favored (at 7/2) Quinn Ella, with Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez in the irons.

This five-year-old mare has the best stats in this eleven-horse field: 23 money finishes in 32 career starts, nine of them wins, including two of her three 2022 starts. Her single non-win this year was a second-place finish in the Jersey Lilly Turf Stakes (Black Type) here at Sam Houston in January.

Twenty-year racing veteran Ronnie E. Cravens, III trains Quinn Ella for L and G Racing Stables.

And we’re back on the dirt track for race eight, a one-mile allowance optional claiming run for three-year-olds. I’m going to back the third-favored (at 7/2) True Diamond, ridden by Stewart Elliott.

This colt won his single start in February here at Sam Houston. Nothing like starting your career with a mike-drop.

Horseracing Hall of Famer Steven M. Asmussen trains True Diamond for his own Asmussenequine.com.

By the way: I can’t quite bring myself to back the 12/1 underdog Inca Empire for the win in race eight, but I would strongly suggest the purchase of a value show ticket on him.

Piloted by Gerardo Mora for this run, the gelding moneyed one of his four career starts—his maiden victory back in November. Prior to that, however, he finished fifth out of thirteen in the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile Stakes (Black Type) at Remington Park in October.

Longtime horseracing veteran Joe S. Offolter trains Inca Empire for owner-breeder Bryan Hawk.

            By J.N. Campbell

            Race 2: 3-5-6-4

**Most Likely Winner: Arm Candy #9 (Race 7)**
**Best Value: Happy Sailor #1 (Race 6)**
            LP4 Ticket: 1,4 / 9 / 1,2,5,6,7 / 1,5,9, Cost: $15.00

            LATE PICK 4 …

            LEG 1: (Race 6: Dirt, 6F, ALLW37kn1x, F&M 4+)

The .50 Late Pick 4 at Sam Houston has a low-takeout, and at 12%, you cannot argue with that … Late in the afternoon we are going turf, dirt, turf, dirt … and it promises to have some true value present! I like these ALLW37kn1x because they can be hotly contested, and no time like the present to think more broadly. I have deep respect for the claiming and spotting ability of Karl Broberg, but I am wondering if M/L favorite, Take Charge Woman #7 is ready for her close-up … her open company ALLW close-up, that is … Broberg picked her up in the Racing Office earlier this month after she won a pair of races for Danny Caldwell and Martin Villafranco. Her state bred experience at the Meet can be put to use, but I think Ry Eikleberry is going to have his hands full. She will take money, but not from me (Note, Broberg also enters Upgrade Me #2) … Instead, I much prefer the back class of a runner like Karen Jacks’ Happy Sailor #1. Breaking from the rail, something the filly by Midshipman has not done in 8 career starts, might be a positive. If pro Leandro Goncalves can exit the gate in an orderly fashion, apply the jets, then this one could be the play. I like her, and will be betting her to “win.” The only other entry that even remotely piques my interest, is Ronnie Cravens’ Lady Fly Like Jet #4. The mare by Jet Phone was pretty impressive facing open company for the 1st time since last year. Cravens really knows how to get his lot ready, and I think the smart-riding, Ernesto V.J, is ready to see this one home. Let’s use this pair against Broberg’s uncoupled entry (we are also spurning Steve Asmussen’s own uncoupled attempt in Encouraging #5 and Miss Americana #8), and move on …

            Selections: 1/4 (2-Deep)

            LEG 2: (Race 7: Turf, 1 Mile, AOC50kn2y, F&M 4+)

Moving right along to the Connally Turf Course ... a finely groomed surface ... I would expect it to come in as “firm,” when it comes to the ground department. This is a tough, but tasty OC50k for older females … Going a pair of turns, I have noticed that those that are forwardly-placed seem to have the best chances to slam the door. Keeping that particular point on the front-burner (pun …), I would imagine that most bettors will see this as a match race between Ronnie Cravens’ Quinn Ella #3 and Steve Asmussen’s Arm Candy #9. Both look capable, and deserve to be included in any multi-race wager. They both competed in the Jersey Lilly $75k during the Houston Racing Festival, and went 2-3 … The Cravens entry does not nearly have the class rating when compared with Asmussen’s filly by Twirling Candy. That pedigree is just stellar routing on this surface, and clearly the HOF conditioner wanted to give his 4-yr-old a break, before bringing her into this spot. If she runs like she is capable of doing, then I really do not see anyone that can best her. I continue to be duly impressed with the lawn chomping skills of Stewart Elliott, and he gets the call. Barring traffic troubles, the only other female that could give these connections a tough time, is J.R. Caldwell’s Quick Quick Quick #1 with Lane Luzzi in the saddle. The hard-knocking 7-yr-old just keeps going. But I see her more as a turf sprinter, than a runner that can extend out in a spot like this one. I am going with the Asmussen “Single,” and he should be ready to roll. Based on this selection, I am going against my observation that the Connally favors those that are rating 1-2 off the lead … This entry just has too much turn-of-foot, and her class is undeniable … “Single.”

            Selections: 9 (Single)

            LEG 3: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 Mile, AOC50kn2x, 3)

The Main Track beckons, as 7 runners will be contesting 2-turns, and it is safe to say that we have a battle royale on our hands here. With 3-yr-old colts, anything can happen, and I am thinking that it was a good decision to save some spots on my ticket for a contest like this one. It appears that all 3 entries that are drawn to the outside have ability, and should take money. Bret Calhoun comes to H-Town once again, and his colt by Classic Empire, Durango Jess #5, is a Tom Durant homebred that broke his maiden last time out @SHRP in a MSW36k. Cutting back to a 6F sprint was apparently just what he needed … now, Calhoun is heading into deeper waters in class and distance. As for the other 2 outside of his post position, you might want to get behind Steve Asmussen’s True Diamond #6 and Austin Gustafson’s Federal Hill #7. The HOF conditioner’s entry is making the leap from MC50k Co., and the son of Shackleford did not disappoint when he broke his maiden on debut. I always wonder when I see an entry like this one … is this horse for real? Did they catch an easy field? Hard to tell, sometimes … My sense is that we cannot leave him off because this is Asmussen, and he comes to play. As for Gustafson’s colt, this gelding by Constitution already has tested OC50k Co., and even though he failed at a short price, maybe the switch from turf to dirt will do the trick. Ry Eikleberry is back this week at Sam Houston, and he will continue to ride exceedingly well. Just to cover ourselves, I am pretty interested in how Karen Jacks’ Dude Perfecta #1 and Lee Rossi’s Sperle #2 will fare in this tough one. They have advantages that should not be overlooked, and I like that these trainers are making the surface switch too. Jockeys Richard Eramia and Freddy Manrrique are holding their own during this Meet, and they will be handling classy mounts. Rossi’s charge is a CJ Thoroughbreds homebody, and you can never count out this breeding/racing organization. I like their panache … let’s include all 5, and head to the bell lap!

            Selections: 1/2/5/6/7 (5-Deep)

            LEG 4: (Race 9: Turf, 5F, Clm25kn2x, 4+)

Concluding on the grass is always a fitting end to a sequence because you know that the blades can cause a bevy of issues … from traffic troubles to settling snafus … it is always a mixed bag. There are some conditions attached to this contest, which bring together a large group of 10 … 4-yrs-old and up is the standard. This “Claiming Game” bout has everyone marked for either a $25k or $30k tag. Everything is on the block, in other words. Turf sprinting can be about the gate, and those that miss that opportunity not only get invariably left behind, but the ground they have to make up is seriously difficult. There is a reason that Kentucky-based Wesley Ward teaches his novices to break quickly. In this spot, I am willing to admit that Steve Asmussen’s entry, Invincibility #1, might just be that … especially when you consider how hot the barn is going right now. Factor in that prospect, plus this well-bred colt by American Pharoah is owned by Bloom Racing, and you wonder why they would leave him unprotected? It is probably because of his poor ALLW Co. efforts, but he still is worth backing on a horizontal wager like this one. As for a top selection, I am going to put my weight behind Scott Young’s Hooves Your Daddy #9 (yes, that is this gelding’s name …). The outfit is racking up scores, and with Floyd Wethey Jr. aboard, I like that this one ran well in MSW CO. last time at Sam Houston on the Connally. The homebred by Majesticperfection is going to be there in the end; I can feel it in my bones. Back to the point about raucous endings on the grass, I also want to add in one other entry that has a “shot.” The exploits of trainer Paul Duhon are well-known around the Bayou City this time of year. Anytime I see that he is entering a turf race like this, I take notice. With Iram Diego in the saddle, you never know what a runner like Hog Wild #5 will do. Last summer at Louisiana Downs, this son of Tizway missed in several claiming contests, finishing 2nd on 4 occasions. With only 1 “Sam” effort this Meet, that makes him fresh and ready in my book. Using a long shot (M/L 20/1) does not seem like a poor idea at all. Those 3 should get us home … let’s go “hog wild,” and cash this ticket!

Each week we highlight some probable long shots from Mohawk Park. If they do not win at first crack we add them to the H2W the following week as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.

Race 4 – Afair Somewhere: Good qualifier proves fitness and spunk.
Race 10 – Baywatching: Comes off a decent win at this track, going for Shayne Barrington this time.

Mohawk, Race 6 - ONTARIO GIRLS

The Ontario Girls pacing series final for four-year-old mares is worth $42k to a field of seven. Just Daisy’s dead-heat for second with Village Jade was earned, while the latter sat drafting favorite Awesome Hill. “Daisy” with “Hill” may be the final call at the wire but that will be a poor price. Daisy with Share The Moment (either way) however, is the surprise ending that pays best.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds for March 10, 2022
                    By: Aaron Halterman

It’s another Thursday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park today, which has a solid card. We will also be covering Fair Grounds for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. We’ve been hot lately, so hopefully we can keep it up! Let’s kick off the week in a good way!

Below is our free Late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

                    Gulfstream Park March 10, 2022

                    Race 6: Starter Optional Claiming

#4 Face of Victory three of his last four starts here at Gulfstream Park, and is spotted in his normal race today. #5 Doo Wop Don moves back to the dirt for this race, while running first off of the claim for a solid new trainer.

                    Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming
                    freestar

#4 Honey Pants moves down in class to the allowance ranks for this race after several efforts against stakes company. #6 Richies Great Girl gets back to the turf for this race after running well in her last two starts over the synthetic surface.

                    Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Frosty Brew should run well today after a little break, while she was second in a similar race last time out. #1 Stellar Ride was a gate to wire winner last time over this track, and should have a good shot today with a similar trip.

                    Race 9: Maiden Optional Claiming

#3 Built Different makes her debut today for a solid trainer, while getting Jose Ortiz aboard, which is a great sign. He does not ride for this barn often. #4 Kelseys Shot runs off of a layoff today, but has been competitive in these sort of races in the past.

                    THE TICKET

                    $.50 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 4 / 2,4,6,7,11 / 1,3,5,8 / 3,4,10 – $30

                        #12
                        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                        Fair Grounds - Race #6
                        Picks Notes
#3 Under Discussion He tracked the pace and gave way late last in the debut run at this level, but he has some upside not only on the move to the grass, but with the experience of that first race under her belt. Pedigree is fine for the trip.
#6 Street N Sour Pace drops in for the first time here, and while he's kind of all or nothing on the front end, he might be able to get brave on the front end while facing this cheaper group for the first time.
#3 Hyperbolist Finisher rallied with some interest in the debut at Delta, and and he didn't have the easiest of runs in that try. Thinking he's interesting for a piece after closing at a trip that can be tough to finish at.
Race Summary Under Discussion meets some dropping types who can be tough in here including #4 B D Valeski, but 'Discussion showed some decent tactical pace in the debut run and might like the new footing while racing from close range.

                        Fair Grounds - Race #7
                        Picks Notes
#6 Hooperdrivestheboat He was no threat when fading tamely at this level last time out, but he ran from the fence that day and will get a better draw this afternoon. At least from here, he's the outside prompting pace and can dictate the terms early.
#3 Ready to Pounce He might not get the right kind of setup from off the splits, but he's better than what he showed last time out, and I expect that he'll show it today. Underlay?
#2 Suggested He was good to us here in this space a few weeks ago, and he might get another pretty decent run of things. Have a mild worry about him getting stuck battling with the top choice early, but he's a threat if he relaxes and presses again.
Race Summary Hooperdrivestheboat has some pace here, and the rest of these seem content to at least rate off the splits. He gets a better draw for his style today and has plenty of room to do better here.

                        Fair Grounds - Race #8
                        Picks Notes
#8 Policy Option He's a pretty reliable finisher, and he has some intrigue here at a price if he can turn in a grinding effort at this longer trip. Don't think he's overmatched here.
#5 Jarreau He's the one to beat off a string of marathon races, and he occasionally flashes a little bit of pace that might serve him well here. Think he's overbet, but he obviously has a big claim on this.
#9 Anneau d'Or He'll need a scratch to get in here, but remember that this guy broke his maiden impressively on the turf at Golden Gate in the race immediately before he rose to fame with his Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up effort. Interesting to see if the surface switch will flip his dull form.
Race Summary Policy Option has some appeal at a price, and I like that he has very mild tactical speed at times, which might keep him in a good spot early on at this longer trip before launching his late rally.

                          Picks Notes
#9 TYMAL TIGGS #9 TYMAL TIGGS -- Left too much work to do, closed with a flourish, today's Best Bet.
#1 YASMENE SEELSTER Second in 8-horse qualifier for 19-percent barn.
#3 GIVE ME KARETS K Rallied through slow back half, finished second to 2-to-5 favorite.
Race Summary Tymal Tiggs was gapped off the gate in a heavily-bet debut, took back to last for 3/4s of a mile, then launched an eye-catching 5-wide rally to finish second to the favorite. He galloped out in front, earning a playback despite starting from post 9. Bet to win and place.

                          Yonkers - Race #3
                          Picks Notes
#5 MILADY DENVER A Earned top recent speed fig after :27.3 final quarter at the Meadowlands.
#1 JOSSIE JAMES A Led to stretch against better, takes some catching from the rail.
#3 TELL ME A JOKE Just missed trying to catch the winning favorite at this level.
Race Summary Milady Denver A trotted evenly in a fast race at the Meadowlands dominated by deep closers. The 12-year-old should appreciate this company as she seeks her first win of the year and 34th overall. Play a 5-1-ALL trifecta.

                          Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #6
                          Picks Notes
#5 JUST DAISY Closed strongly in last pair after poor race shape.
#1 AWESOME HILL Seeks series sweep with 9-for-18 record intact.
#3 VILLAGE JADE Took aim between top pair in improved second start off freshening.
Race Summary Just Daisy, a fast-closing fifth two starts back, was slowed by single-file alignment, stalled cover and unpressured, pace-controlling co-favorite Awesome Hill last week. She can turn the tables with some better racing luck. Bet to win and place

                            Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 10th March 2022
                            By: Racing and Sports Time

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Canterbury, Pakenham, Kilmore, Port Macquarie and Pinjarra.

                            CANTERBURY: RACE 2 @ 1:50 PM

RENOSU (1) has been holding his own in Group and Listed company and will find this a lot easier. Strips fitter third-up from the spell and gets the services of McDonald in the irons. Rates the testing material. Stablemate SPACEWALK (2) is another who has been competing exclusively in black type races and hasn't been too far away. Looks the main danger. ALPHA ONE (10) wasn't disgraced on debut and will have taken benefit from that day at the races. In the mix. SURF ON TURF (8) looked good winning a recent Rosehill trial and hails from a good barn for juveniles. Respect. The well-related and well-bred REGGIE'S FOLLY (7) is another facing the starter for the first time and any moves in betting must be noted.
                            SELECTIONS: Renosu to win.

                            PAKENHAM: RACE 8 @ 9:15 PM

TAVISTORM (6) was a touch disappointing as a heavily backed favourite last time out after a very strong debut win. He may now be looking for more ground but should enjoy a strong tempo and he can bounce back. OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (1) will land on speed and take running down. Nugent gets along well with her and she'll be in this for a long way. INDENTED HEAD (10) was disappointing as favourite last time out but strong on speed at Moonee Valley prior. BAGLIONI (7) maps for a soft run and Damian Lane going on is a positive. TAMETOMO (8) is in the mix.
SELECTIONS: Tavistorm and Ocean's Thirteen to win.

                            KILMORE: RACE 7 @ 4:30 PM

GLITTER 'N' GOLD (7) came off a break and worked home soundly first-up at Pakenham. Will strip fitter for the run and a forward showing is expected.. DUNVEGAN (2) comes here with excellent form. Looks suited in a race of this nature and won't be far away. DANALI (10) has been racing consistently and wasn't too far from the action at Bendigo last time out. Is expected to feature prominently here. QUICK ENUFF (5) had good support but failed to feature first-up at Mt Gambier. Fitter this time around and is worth keeping a watch on.
SELECTIONS: Back Glitter 'N' Gold to win.

                            PORT MACQUARIE: RACE 6 @ 4:05 PM

DON'T DOUBT KATIE (5) was well respected last time out at Taree and has been consistent this time in. She draws wide but can run well again. SHARKIM (4) won at this track and distance on debut and has been given time. He's trialled well and will be hard to beat in this. WEST GERMANY (2) has handled wet tracks in the past and has a strong jockey and trainer combination. REWARDING TRANCE gets a soft run from the gate and will be fitter.
                            SELECTIONS: Sharkim to win.
