Top Horse Racing Picks for Tuesday, March 15, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

The selected tracks for my Tuesday horseracing picks — Mahoning Valley Race Course, Penn National Race Course, and Turf Paradise — yielded a basketful of underdog moneymakers as well as a couple of sleepers for our betting enjoyment and bankroll enhancement on the Ides of March.

Remember that you can find everything you want to know about all the races at each of my Tuesday tracks, including horse, jockeys, morning line odds, and betting options, at one of our best horseracing wagering sites.

      Good luck!
Tuesday Picks for Mahoning Valley Race Course

Let’s start our horseracing day on the main track for race two, a one-mile claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 3/1 second-favored Fort Ramsey, piloted by Sonny Leon.

This six-year-old gelding finished in the money 19 of his 32 career starts, winning eight, including his last three. That gives him the statistical edge in this seven-horse field.

Regularly ranked among the top 100 trainers in North America for wins since 2008, Eric R. Reed trains Fort Ramsey for owner Holly Delaney. Teed put Leon in the irons for Fort Ramsey’s two most recent victories.

Race three is a one-mile allowance race for Ohio-bred fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m buying a win ticket on the second-favored (at 3/1) Crikey, ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez.

This five-year-old mare moneyed five of her six career starts, winning two — her initial maiden attempt Last August and a claiming race in September, both at Belterra Park.

With two decades in the horseracing business, C. Louis Bates trains Crikey for Hillburn Racing Stable LLC.

Race four is a six-furlong starter allowance race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the 2/1 morning-line favorite, Beverly Park, with veteran jockey John McKee aboard.

This five-year-old finished 16 of his 24 career starts in the money, winning 13. He got off to a slow start back in 2019, but it all turned around for him in 2021, when in July he began what turned out to be a seven-race winning streak.
Of his nine races since that streak, Beverly Park has won four. He’ll do.

Newcomer Norman L. Cash trains Beverly Park for Built Wright Stables, LLC.
Tuesday’s Picks for Penn National Race Course

We’ll start on the dirt track with race one, a one mile and 70 yards allowance run for three year-olds. I like the second-favored (at 9/5) Nimitz, with Victor R. Carrasco in the irons.

This colt finished in the money two of his four career starts, winning one. He graduated the maiden class in December here at Penn National on his third attempt, then finished second in an allowance race at Parx Racing just last month.

Phil Schoenthal trains Nimitz for owner-breeder HnR Nothhaft Horse Racing, LLC.

Race four is a six-furlong claiming race for fillies and mares four years old and upward that have never won three races. I’m calling this one for the fourth-favored (at 5/1) Rainbow Trout, ridden by veteran jockey Inoel Beato.

This four-year-old filly moneyed four of his five career starts, winning two — his most recent two, in fact.

Ranked in the top 100 for wins four years running, Kimberly A Graci trains Rainbow Trout for Smoke Hollow Stables.

Race seven is a one mile and 70 yards allowance optional claiming race on the dirt track for four-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 3/1) Dollarization, piloted by Maicol J. Inirio.

A stand-out in an unimpressive six-horse field, this four-year-old gelding finished 12 of his 16 career starts in the money, winning four, including his most recent. He’s moneyed his last seven allowance races.

Trainer Timothy C. Kreiser has tapped Inirio to saddle Dollarization for his last twelve races, resulting in ten money finishes, three of them wins.

Kreiser — who’s been top-ranked for wins, earnings, or both regularly since 20004 — trains Dollarization for owner James C. Wolf.
My Tuesday Picks for Turf Paradise

Let’s start on the dirt track with race one, a one-mile claiming race for four-year-olds and upward. This is one of those “pick the least likely to lose” races, so I’m betting my two dollars on the 8/5 morning-line favorite, Unleash the Beast, with Karlo Lopez in the irons.

This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money 25 of his 57 career starts, winning 12. He’s had less-than-stellar success at the allowance level, but he has won a couple — unlike his competition in this lackluster field of six.

Unleash the Beast is trained by owner Jose Silva, Jr. Incidentally, jockey Karlo Lopez is having a very good year.

Race four is a one-mile starter optional allowance race for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 8/1 underdog, Mulligan, with jockey Luis A. Valenzuela aboard.

This five-year-old mare has the statistical edge on the favorite, with eight money finishes in 12 career starts, three of them wins. The edge comes from her accomplishments in her last seven races, two of which were wins, all were in the money.
While the favorite — Midnight Garden — had two wins among her last seven starts, she only finished in the money twice more. Advantage: Mulligan.

Candelario Villamar trains Mulligan for owner Rodolfo Mejia Perez.

Let’s move to the turf course for race eight, a 7-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the 8/1 sleeper, Time for Gold, ridden by Luis A. Valenzuela.

This four-year-old filly moneyed six of her nine career starts, winning three, including her most recent allowance race here at Turf Paradise. Notably, her other two wins were the Angie C. Stakes (Black Type) and the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes (Black Type) in mid-2020, both at Emerald Downs.

Frank Lucarelli trains Time for Gold for owner Chad and Josh.

Today's Horse Racing Tips: Cheltenham Day 1, Tuesday March 15th
          Stephen Harris bettingexpert Racing editor

          Today’s Racing Tips – Cheltenham Day 1, March 15th

The day of the year that all NH fans have been waiting for, with the Cheltenham Festival 2022 getting underway and a massive crowd expected at Prestbury Park. The bettingexpert Festival guide has selections and analysis in all 28 races over the four days, and is an invaluable tool to help make the week a profitable one betting-wise.

There is also action from Sedgefield in the afternoon, where traditionally a plot or two is hatched, while all-weather fans can get stuck into twilight cards at Newcastle and Southwell.

          Cheltenham Festival 2022 Betting Offers
          Today’s Daily Nap

          Constitution Hill

          Cheltenham 1:30pm

Nicky Henderson’s strapping type has created a deep impression in winning both starts over hurdles at Sandown so far, not off the bridle to rout Graded opposition in the Tolworth last time out. He will be extremely hard to beat if the ground rides soft on the opening day, with his main rival Jonbon much more of a speed horse who may need better ground/Aintree in the spring.

          Odds: 3.50
          Today’s Value Angle

          Death Duty

          Cheltenham 2:50pm

Gordon Elliott’s handicapper bounced back to his very best form when winning over 3m4f at Punchestown in February, and he is confidently expected to back that run up on much better ground in a typically competitive Ultima. There is still plenty of scope from this kind of mark, with the trainer recently quoted as saying this was his best handicapped horse over the four days, and his proven stamina for further will count for plenty up the stamina sapping final climb.

          Odds: 13.00

Odds are best odds available as at 1am March 15th 2022. Odds may now differ.

13:30 Supreme Novices' Hurdle - Dysart Dynamo

14:10 The Arkle Challenge Trophy - Edwardstone

14:50 The Ultima Handicap Steeple Chase - Tea Clipper

15:30 The Champion Hurdle - Honeysuckle

16:10 Mares' Hurdle - Stormy Ireland
Strong each-way selections for Day 1 of Cheltenham

13:30 Supreme Novices' Hurdle - Kilcruit

14:10 The Arkle Challenge Trophy - Haut En Couleurs

14:50 The Ultima Handicap Steeple Chase - Kiltealy Briggs

15:30 The Champion Hurdle - Teahupoo

16:10 Mares' Hurdle - Martello Sky
13:30 Supreme Novices' Hurdle - Dysart Dynamo

David Carr, Racing Post: "We start off with an absolute belter, there's four horses in there that could all be superstars, Jonbon and Constitution Hill for Britain and for Ireland, the one I fancy - Dysart Dynamo.

"Two wins, 19 lengths each of them, could be something really really special, that's Dysart Dynamo."

Planet Sport's full Supreme Novices' Hurdle article
14:10 The Arkle Challenge Trophy - Edwardstone

Jonathan Doidge, Planet Sport: "I think Haut En Couleurs could run a really big race each-way, but I do worry a little about Edwardstone that's the one I'm going to nominate.

"His form in his last two or three starts, on racing post ratings at least, has started to plateau a little bit. But he has jumped superbly and you can't really argue too much with the form he's put down apart from that plateau effect.

"I don't think I've seen anything that I favour more than him. It's Edwardstone for me."

Planet Sport's full Arkle tips article
14:50 The Ultima Handicap Steeple Chase - Kiltealy Briggs (e/w)

Jonathan Doidge, Planet Sport: "The Jamie Snowden-trained eight-year-old is has only raced nine times over fences, winning two and being placed in four others.

"He's very much still unexposed and on an upward curve, as his form figures will testify. Third to Bravemansgame in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices' Chase (3m) over Christmas, he improved again when scoring at Musselburgh in novices' company last time.

"He already has a positive Cheltenham Festival experience under his belt, when a respectable ninth of 21 behind The Shunter in last year's Plate.

"He stayed three miles over hurdles but he's had few attempts at this trip so far and that could be key in eliciting the improvement required to win this."
            15:30 The Champion Hurdle - Teahupoo (e/w)

David Carr, Racing Post: "Everyone loves Honeysuckle, she's won every time we've seen her, she's going to go off a really short price but she's not unbeatable and I think this is going to be her stiffest test.

"A Gordon Elliott trained horse called Teahupoo, bit of a dark horse, not run in Britain before, he's looked really good winning each of his starts this year, doesn't have to find much improvement."

            16:10 Mares' Hurdle - Martello Sky (e/w)

Dominic Elsworth, former Cheltenham Festival winning jockey: "Quite an open race, Martello Sky for me a bit of an each-way bet, Telmesomethingirl has been a little bit disappointing she's going to go off favourite but this season has been a bit disappointing, maybe last year just took it out of her.

"But as a good each-way bet I think Martello Sky, trained by Lucy Wadham."

              Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 15th March 2022
              By: Racing and Sports

              HAWKESBURY: RACE 2 @ 1:50 PM

The well-related CHIEF CONDUCTOR (2) is starting to put it all together with a solid win at Wyong two back before not being disgraced when third in town last time out. The winner of that race has since come out and won a Midway so the form stacks up. Rates the testing material against this lot. YOUR TOO GOOD (1) was too bad to be true last start but prior to that had strung together a nice run of form. Her only victory has come around this circuit and looks a top-three candidate. ZALINI (5) hasn't done much wrong this preparation with a win and two seconds from three outings and will be at peak fitness now. In the mix. EYE PEA OH (6) disappointed last time but go on the solid Nowra win two back.
              SELECTIONS: Chief Conductor to win.

              MOREE: RACE 3 @ 3:25 PM

SHE HULK (1) shed the maiden tag at Dubbo last time out and will have taken plenty of confidence from that victory. Draws well for Looker in gate two and should be right there when the whips are cracking. BRIDGES TO BABYLON (4) failed in harder company first-up but the form she showed last campaign was more than good enough to be competitive against this lot. Respect. STORM INTENSITY (5) was a touch disappointing last start but go on solid debut win two back. In the mix. RAZZLE DAZZLE (9) looked good winning first time at the races and can go right on with the job now. STRELITZIA (3) strips fitter second-up and is one for the multiples.
              SELECTIONS: She Hulk to win.

              BALLARAT: RACE 4 @ 3:00 PM

TURN IT UP TOMMY (8) has been racing well and is close to a win, the latest effort a solid third at Moonee Valley over 1600m at his second run back from a spell. Will appreciate a drop in grade and roomier track. The one to beat with Oliver sticking. HAMERON (2) is a first-starter by Night Of Thunder who cost GNS 575,000 (Tattersalls 2020 Craven Breeze Up Sale) at the sales. Fitter for a recent trial. Looks set to run well. PORT PHILIP (4) is a four-year-old gelding who is having his first run for the Robert Hickmott barn. Finished off last campaign when sixth at Tipperary Ireland ten months ago. Hasn't trialled publicly so the market will be the best pointer. TAVISTEEL (14) can improve second up with the step up to a mile.
SELECTIONS: This looks a nice race for #8 Turn It Up Tommy.

              MACKAY: RACE 6 @ 4:04 PM

CABALO ESCURO (3) was sent out favourite last time and justified the support, leading from barrier rise and scoring by 5.5 lengths at this track. Boasts four recent wins here at her home track. Should park right on the speed and will give another great sight. SVINDAL (6) was strong late when second last time over 1300m at Rockhampton, following a win in open company at the same track two runs back. Good record at this journey with two wins and three placings from eight starts. Key contender. SCHAPPOSE (7) ran a bold race over this journey last time, racing on the speed for much of the way before fading to finish 2.25 lengths away in fourth at Rockhampton. Alisha Donald goes well when aboard and is back on top today. Expected to measure up. TARAKI (2) was safely held when resuming last start over 1100m at this track, finishing fourth and beaten 7 lengths. Should be prominent from the outset. BERNIE'S TIGER (1) is racing well and is an each-way hope.
SELECTIONS: #3 Cabalo Escuro is flying and can win again.

                    #10
                    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                    Parx Racing - Race #7
                    Picks Notes
#6 Chowda He faded badly last time out in New York, but he's a decent fit with these and should get a good run of things right near the top. Guessing he's tough with the locals.
#2 El Hermano He owns some decent finishing ability that may bring him along late for a piece of this but thinking a more tactical player will land top honors here.
#1 Thorny Tale He's fast enough to get in the mix early from the rail draw, but he hasn't been inspiring a ton of confidence in the lane in recent starts with a string of fading tries to his credit. Capable underlay?
Race Summary Chowda has plenty of room to bounce back after a dull run last time out at Aqueduct, and he should be in line for a pretty nice trip while likely prompting the rail runner.

                    Parx Racing - Race #9
                    Picks Notes
#3 Bucks Some She might get the run of the race behind a couple of quicker speed types, as she has some positional pace and an ability to settle, and that should serve her well while spying the speed.
#7 Live Aid Think she's interesting for a piece of this while stepping up in class, and she gets a good draw for her forward style that should let her press the splits into the turn.
#1 Map of America Pace will probably have to go from the fence after scoring a nice gate-to-wire score last time out, and I worry that she's going to take too much heat from the other pace types.
Race Summary Bucks Some might get a really good finishing run here in a spot with a few pretty serious forward players. She can sit off the speed, and she should be moving late when few others are.

                    Parx Racing - Race #10
                    Picks Notes
#6 Pategory One His style should suit this race shape well, as he brings some tactical ability and pretty reliable form. He does have some tables to turn out of recent starts, but the price should be right to see if he can trip out today.
#3 Irish Honor He should bring some pace again here after settling for second with similar last time out, and he handled the top choice in that effort. Capable forward player.
#2 Brilliant Chase His form has been heading in the right direction in recent starts, and something like his most recent try would keep him in the mix right back. Underlay?
Race Summary Pategory One should offer a playable mid-range price after finishing behind a couple of these in recent starts, and there's a chance he lands a perfect trip tracking the splits.

                      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                      Yonkers - Race #1
                      Picks Notes
#1 BELL’S DAVID Bell tolls for a victory after troubled trip last week.
#6 CONFIDENCE MAN Good finish behind fave two back, ran into ‘interference’ in follow-up.
#4 BET ON BLAKE Suspect he will be put into play earlier in bid to join $100,000 Club.
Race Summary Bell’s David tracked the 6-to-5 pocket sitter, loomed boldly inside when that rival pulled out to go after the leader, then was pinned in tight in the stretch with run. He exits the fastest prelim race in the MGM Rewards series and draws the rail as today’s Best Bet.

                      Northfield Park - Race #1
                      Picks Notes
#3 ARTSMAH Pocket trip turned bad when favorite back-pedaled.
#5 RIVER’S CREST Paced evenly in fast-paced race against better.
#4 SHARK FANTASY Brushed to lead, out-kicked by longshot winner.
Race Summary Artsmah was shuffled out of contention from the pocket near the ¾-mile pole against similar foes. The classy 10-year-old is worth a playback at a big price. Bet to win and place.

                      Northfield Park - Race #5
                      Picks Notes
#7 PROLOGUE Held well through 1:23.4 third-quarter split, got caught.
#1 BUBBIE BOY Angled inside on turn, split rivals to win going away.
#4 WHEATLEY WILDCAT Finished first or second in 4 of 7 starts this year.
Race Summary Prologue set a rapid pace as the 2-to-5 favorite, then got caught in a slow final quarter by the 2-1 second choice. He can carry his speed the distance in his second start off the claim. Play 7-1 and 7-4 exactas.

Race 5 covers 6 furlongs on the dirt for a $20,000 purse. This one should result in a battle between Dazzling Speed and Parable.

Dazzling Speed has just one win in 41 attempts. That’s an unfavorable success rate for the mare. However, down in class, she should have a chance Tuesday.

She has been accustomed to running at Monmouth and Aqueduct primarily in her career. In her most recent attempt, Dazzling Speed finished 8th in a tougher race.

This should be easier, but Parable is a one-time winner through 11 races. The mare is 4th, 12th, 1st in her last three assignments.

She is coming off a 1 ¼ length $19,000 win as the favorite on February 23. The Canadian appreciated the transfer from Woodbine to Parx for easier work.

It was tough for her at Woodbine, but Parx competition won’t compare. She did well right away in Philadelphia. This looks like another winnable spot.

Race 7 looks like one to watch between Chowda and Thorny Tale in the stretch run. Chowda is 3 for 14 and he in good form recently.

He’s been involved in some tough races, including the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes on December 5. Chowda is 4th, 2nd, 9th in his previous three events.

Two races back, Chowda placed 2nd behind Sibelius by a head for $82,000 on January 8. That was pretty impressive.

Following that attempt, he was 9th on February 5 in an $82,000 race, hence the class drop. Thorny Tale has a good chance of repelling Chowda.

Thorny Tale is 8 for 26 with experience at Aqueduct and Belmont. He finished 4th in three straight races, most recently in a $29,000 event.

Expect Thorny Tale to benefit from the inside go on strongly in Race 7.

Race 9 covers 6 furlongs on the dirt for a $46,000 purse. Look at Spun D’Etat and Map of America to have an impact on this occasion.

Spun D’Etat is 4 for 16 and sets up well for a big performance on Tuesday afternoon. She has finished 6th, 4th, 4th after a win on October 28.

Spun D’Etat had a $60,000 win and then fell off. In her latest outing, she finished 4th for a $44,000 purse. More is required on Tuesday.

Map of America has two wins in 16 races, going 5th, 5th, 1st in his last three appearances. In her most recent, she beat Onthisharvestmoon by 4 ¾ lengths in a $40,000 event.

This came after Map of America went 5th on August 7 in the same class. She should enjoy the inside rail in Race 9.

The BetOnline racebook has a sufficient card with four racecourses available for wagering. There is Louisana Downs, Parx, Sunland Park, and Turf Paradise on the schedule Tuesday afternoon. Three tracks return from yesterday, while Sunland Park is in the mix on Tuesday.

The big race to circle for this upcoming weekend is the $500,000 Essex Handicap (Gr. 3) at Oaklawn Park. If you are searching for a 100-50-20-10 prep race for the Kentucky Derby, that’s coming up at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans.

The $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby (Gr. 1) is scheduled for the end of the month. That’s one to circle on March 26.

Our first look on Tuesday is in Arizona at Turf Paradise. Turf Paradise has eight races worth $154,000 today. Head below for our best Turf Paradise picks on March 14, 2022.

                          Purse:$21,000

The first race at Turf Paradise covers a mile for a $21,000 purse. Expect big work from Impression and Unleash the Beast in this event.

It’s possible for a duel between these two in the stretch. Unleash the Beast is well down in class after finishing 1st, 4th, 7th, 7th in his previous four outings.

He was a $17,000 winner by 8 ½ lengths on August 3, but has struggled to get to the front since then. Unleash the Beast finished 7th in back-to-back showings on February 3 and March 2 for $29,400.

A drop in grade to $21,000 looks for the better. Impression is 7 for 33 and rates a threat to Unleash the Beast.

Impression is 1st, 2nd, 5th, 2nd, 2nd in his previous five attempts. He placed 2nd in back-to-back races in a $22,000 and $24,000 race most recently by a length.

Impression has proven to be competitive in this grade and should continue on Tuesday. I’m going with the horse from the inside rail to edge out at the wire.

                          Purse:$11,480

Race 3 covers 5 furlongs on the dirt for an $11,480 purse. Success Rate and Nevadan should have a chance at the winner’s circle in the third race.

Success Rate is 13 for 94 and has been in top form recently. He is 2nd, 1st, 2nd in his previous three attempts, which included a half-length win for $11,480 on February 8.

That was a good run and did fine in his next appearance on March 1. He placed 2nd behind Chef by 2 ¼ lengths in the same grade. Expect him to be competitive in this one.

Nevadan is 15 for 68 and he should look better today on a class drop. He’s finished 1st, 3rd, 10th, 8th, 5th in his previous five entries.

Nevadan most recently finished 5th in a $15,690 assignment on February 15 after 8th on January 20 for a $13,020 purse. He has the best speed reading of this field over the last several months and should be a contender.

This should be a good opportunity for Nevadan to get on track with a win.

                          Purse:$18,900

Race 7 is an $18,900 assignment on the dirt across 6 ½ furlongs. I’d recommend a look at Savage Love and Addydidit for a win bet.

Savage Love is winless in six races and should be involved in the finish at this level. She’s 2nd, 2nd, 4th, 5th in her previous four attempts.

In her most recent showing, Savage Love finished 5th for a $13,500 purse. The filly has some talent, but improvements will have to be made.

Addydidit is winless in 11 events, with some inconsistent work so far in her career. She finished 5th, 2nd, 6th in her previous three events.

Addydidit placed 2nd behind Full Speed Full Speed Astern by a neck for $18,900 on February 21. That was encouraging.

After finishing 6th on March 4 for $23,800, Addydidit is back down in class to a winnable class. No surprise here if Addydidit comes from the outside to a win.
