Fresno State (10PM ET ESPN Plus) – Kansas comes out of the locker room on fire and a huge second half gives us a blowout best bet winner in our only move on Sunday. It ends up being a 4-2 week on the CBB hardwood and I’m going to take a couple shots and try to finish the season with another winning week, starting in The Basketball Classic where the Fresno State Bulldogs take on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.
The masses are hopping on Southern Utah with the points here and I’m assuming that is a result of checking the box scores because I doubt most watched the Portland/Southern Utah game with it being up against Houston/Villanova and not on network television. Southern Utah rolled to what looks like a very easy 11 point win over Portland but the T-Birds shot close to 70% in the first half. Portland was in the process of making a run when Chris Austin suffered a gruesome leg injury, leaving a game where he was 8 for 9 from the field with 21 points. The prior game UTEP looked completely uninterested in a game where the Miners uncharacteristically chucked up 28 threes so, while Southern Utah deserves credit for winning games, I think the market is giving them a little too much credit for what I consider to be inflated results. Enter Fresno State, the Bulldogs quietly finished 6th in a Mountain West Conference that sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament and are a stellar 13-4 in 17 home games this season. Fresno State eased past Eastern Washington and Youngstown State winning both of those games by nine points and both of those opponents are comparable to Southern Utah. The reason Southern Utah underachieved in the Big Sky this season (many picked them to win the conference preseason) was because the T-Birds are a sieve on defense. Fresno State is going to slow this game down limiting the opportunities for easy points for Southern Utah, the Bulldogs should be able to get what they want against this Southern Utah defense and I see a game where Fresno State slowly builds their lead and eventually pulls away by double digits.
Southern Utah has been without leading scorer Tevian Jones this entire tournament, it hasn’t mattered yet but I think not having him will finally show up against Fresno State here. Jones is the best shot maker on this Southern Utah team, he leads the T-Birds with 14.6 points per game and not having him and his ability to make tough shots is going to hurt Southern Utah when they face a Fresno State team that defends and defends well. I also see Southern Utah having a big issue stopping Fresno State forward Orlando Robinson, he averages 19.4 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game and he’s a better athlete than what Southern Utah has to guard him which is Southern Utah’s saving grace defensively. Southern Utah didn’t defend Portland particularly well, they got by in that game by being more athletic and because Portland went 6 for 18 from three. Portland also had that game down to 6 or 8 at points and could never hit the timely shot to put pressure on Southern Utah who was able to play with confidence from the opening tip thanks to a 11-0 run to start the game. Southern Utah isn’t going to “out-athlete” Fresno State which means the path to victory for the Thunderbirds here is going to be another lethal shooting night. Fresno State can defend shooters and I think the absence of Jones for Southern Utah finally shows up with the T-Birds struggling to run quality offense here.
Fresno State is taking a slightly different approach to this tournament, they are playing 10-11 guys per game and head coach Justin Hutson has turned this into a true team effort. In turn, I think the team is having fun and the Fresno State bench has been engaged and played extremely well because of it. Fresno State played a gauntlet in the Mountain West this season so the opposition has been a step down and that holds true against Southern Utah as well. Fresno State is a far superior team, this line is short and I have the Bulldogs winning this one by more than a touchdown. Play on Fresno State -7 (-110)
