Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Windcracker #4, 9/2):

Trainer Cip Contreras has a good, solid stable, but looking at his win percentage, you might conclude that isn’t the case. However, taking a longer view, he has 15 “Places” during the OP Meet … impressive. I think this gelding by Super Saver will give him win number 7, and I believe that because this one is going to receive some nice class relief. Last out, he was up against Clm50n2L Co., with the likes of Name Rejected and Breaking News. The speed fig he posted, and the jockeying late in the game by Francisco Arrieta, make me think he can get the job done against this group. Should be fun to see Cip head to the Larry Snyder …

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Violent Pass #3, 6/1):

Here is a 5-yr-old gelding by Violence that has 4, 4th place finishes in-a-row. It is time to break through … don’t you think? I like that Paul Holthus is dropping this one down from Clm20k Co., and that should bring some results, I think. I am sure Allen Milligan’s Abdan #9 will get over bet; last out, that 4-yr-old could not make the jump from the MC ranks … Holthus is a solid conditioner with a great approach to his runners. Runs in the family, to say the least, as his father was a cornerstone at Oaklawn for decades as their leading trainer …

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #3 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 6F, AOC75kn2L, 3F):

The long shadow of Brad Cox is cast over this race … like a skyscraper obscuring the view of a 100-yr-old building … all very dramatic … that’s for sure. Between uncoupled entry, Com’ On Sweet Luv #2 and Icy Stare Down #7, I rather like the look of the latter over the former. Last out at Oaklawn, the filly by Frosted (makes sense) was up against Mike Maker’s Lady Scarlett. This runner just shipped to Aqueduct, and she ran impressively in a “Non-G.” With a pair of works under her, she should be much more “fit” for this run on the dirt. The steady hand of Florent Geroux will be applied once again. I would not necessarily count out the other half of the entry, because she is by Jimmy Creed, a sire that has produced some very good runners. Ricardo Santana rides this 3-yr-old, taking over for Marcelino Pedroza. Even though her latest effort at the Fair Grounds against ALLW Co. did not work out for her, she clearly has a chance to demonstrate a better leg kick late in the game. I want to use both of these entries from Cox’s keep, but I am also interested in Tom Amoss’ Pipeline Girl #4 and Steve Asmussen’s Benedict Canyon #5. Amoss has not run all that often in Hot Springs, but he thinks this filly by Air Force Blue has what it takes to come to town. Owner Jerry Caroom is a fixture during the Meet, so that probably have something to do with this entry. She actually beat Cox’s #2 at the Fair Grounds, so that could be an angle to exploit once again. As for Asmussen’s attempt (he has 2 entered, actually), the HOF conditioner is leading in the trainer standings with 30 “wins,” and this filly by Midnight Lute is going for her 2nd start under the guidance of her new barn. The former Baffert “starlet” broke her maiden back at Del Mar in early September. Since then, she has not done much for Little Red feather Racing. That could change today … One other entry that looks pretty intriguing is Randy Morse’s class climber, Stanley Market #3. I backed this one in a Clm30kn2L contest back on 11 Feb., and the rewards were sweet at 12/1. Jon Court is aboard once again, and Morse has such a great approach to horsemanship. I am not sure that this filly by Twirling Candy is quite ready for this crowd, but I have to use her … she will be a superb price! Here is the bet I have constructed …

Most Likely Winner: (Race 3: Uncle Artie #2, 3/1):

This seasoned gelding by Artie Schiller was another great claim by trainer Karl Broberg. Sam Houston is currently experiencing a renaissance when it comes to “dropping,” and there is no better master than Broberg. He has tutored many a pupil in this regard … The 7-yr-old clearly takes to the grass, and in this spot, he should be able to grab the victory. Ry Eikleberry is riding so well right now, and even though he is much better on the dirt, he did guide this one to a 2nd Place finish 2 races back. If you get 3/1 on the tote, I would consider that a pretty square price.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Hunk of a Hit #1, 6/1):

Here is another runner from Karl Broberg’s midst that has potential. The gelding by Pollard’s Vision has tried this level the last 3 occasions in Houston, and based on the results … has come up, on the whole, empty. Setting aside the excuse-making, that doesn’t mean that he is not a good horse. On the contrary, looking deeper into his form, you find some bright spots. Switching over to Freddy Manrrique could be the lynchpin, and I think Broberg is correct to try this spot again. If he can get on or close to the lead, then he has a shot. There is not really another entry that I fear … what a price at 6/1!

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 5: Turf, 5F, ALLW37kn1x, 3):

The John B. Connally Turf Course should be dry enough after a Tuesday front came barreling through Texas. Here is a tough ALLW Co. contest that is short … just 5 furlongs … In a spot like this one, it is sometimes about the break. If you can catch it, then that can go a long way to delivering a victory. The grass course in Houston, which is in fine shape this late in the Meet, appears to support those that can shake loose in the early stages. For my money, I want to toss my support, and my cash behind Cesar Govea’s new acquisition … He’s a Bomb #5. The Oklahoma bred was in this trainer’s corner just last month, so it is a plus that he already knows what the colt can do. I think putting the son of Hit It a Bomb back on the lawn is a great move, especially considering his bloodline. The class level is not going to be that big an issue, and the best news is that Ernesto Valdez-Jimenez gets the call once again. I am sure this one will not be double-digit odds come post time, but we can hope. A couple of other entries that I want to use include, Scott Young’s short-priced Agent Peter Graves #10, and the boxcar-priced Saint Charles #11. Each has their advantages, but if the latter ends up at 50/1, like he is on the M/L, then that could be the deal of the century (his past form is not too terrible/just needs the right set-up). Let’s use them both in our Exacta, and it could be a really superb hit …

Today’s horse racing tips – 24th March 2022

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for March 24.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Hawkesbury, Ipswich, Kilmore and Albury.

HAWKESBURY: RACE 5 @ 3:40 PM

STALKING (13) will be suited up in trip after finishing hard first up at Kembla Grange. She was thought highly enough of to tackle Group 2 company last time in and ran 4th. Keen on her chances out to 1500m today. NANO STAR (9) looks ready to win. Her debut effort at Kilmore reads well for this, as does her first up effort when leading at Canterbury. She should be fitter for that and can take a sit off a good tempo. SMART LITTLE MISS (13) ran well at Gosford first up and can improve here. NOT A SINGLE BID (3) will roll forward with Berry on and run well.
SELECTIONS: Stalking to win.

IPSWICH: RACE 4 @ 3:27 PM

SPIRIT'S CHARM (6) didn't like the poly two-runs back over longer but the form around that reads extra well. Just missed here the latest and will take beating with Fradd sticking and pushing forward. EXPENSIVE TO KEEP (5) was on speed belting a CL2 field on the poly. Keeps the handy 3kg claim and back to the grass won't bother. A danger. TAAFFEITE (4) resumes for a sharp barn and has trialled twice. The former Victorian will race over further but has good figures and has to be kept safe. HE IS (2) has a similar profile. The late betting will tell with her as well.
SELECTIONS: Backing Spirit's Charm.

KILMORE: RACE 8 @ 5:00 PM

ADKI (2) led them up and kept running here last time. Takes on the boys this time around but is expected to be hard to stop again. RICHTER (3) is back following a freshen up and in new stable. Now trained locally and is likely to have been set for a forward first-up showing. Has to be respected. O'REG (4) has filled the runner-up role in three of past five starts. Is deserving of another win and won't be too far away. ANNIE'S COMET (6) is coming back off a break. Form last campaign had plenty of merit about and fresh up here cannot be left out of calculations.
SELECTIONS: Back Adki to win.

ALBURY: RACE 7 @ 5:15 PM

A terrific race. MAJOR TIME (5) was just pipped at Canberra behind Cavalier Charles and he's won again since and will race in the Country Championships final. Has Loy and is well-weighted. Can win holding that level of form. DELACOUR (2) missed a nose in the Open sprint at Canberra 11 days ago improving again. That reads well and the speedy galloper will take beating. CALESCENT (1) led and couldn't have been more impressive winning the Canberra Open 27 days ago. In a top barn and keeps the handy 2kg claim. She will go close. NORTHERNERO (7) has an awkward gate but there was a lot to like about the Cowra win. Fitter and he gets plenty of weight relief this grade. Can make the finish.
SELECTIONS: With Major Time each way.

#1 No Que No gets back to the turf today, which should suit him well after running well over the synthetic two starts back. #2 Pirate Life was a solid winner on debut last time out over the dirt, and has a pedigree that suggests he will handle the turf today.

Race 7: Starter Optional Claiming

#6 Nebuli has been running well over the synthetic surface this year, but moves back to the dirt today, which is a question mark. #2 Princess Cupid also has been running solid races over the synthetic surface, and has a pedigree that suggests she will handle the dirt as well.

Race 8: Allowance

#5 Clapton was solid at this level last time out, and if he runs back to that race he will win in this spot today. #1 Hoorayhoorayhooray was fourth behind our top choice last time out, but should improve today in his second start against winners.

Race 9: Claiming

#3 Propensity was a winner by a head at this level last time out, and should be tough to beat in this similar spot today. #2 Prefect moves back to the turf today, which is where he won at a higher level three starts back. His last two races got rained off of the turf.
