Doomben is hosting a rare eight-race metropolitan meeting on Monday afternoon, and that is due to Wednesday’s meeting being washed out. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing expert presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which is set to begin at 12:35pm AEST. The track is rated a Soft 7, but drying conditions over the weekend will see the track continue to improve, right up until the first race on Monday, while the rail is out 9m for the entire course.
BEST BET: Street Dancer

We were pretty bullish about Street Dancer’s winning chances on Saturday at Eagle Farm, but David Vandyke has elected to wait until Monday to step the four-year-old gelding out for his second start in Queensland. The son of Pride Of Dubai was quite good in his Brisbane debut on March 16 when second at Eagle Farm over 1600m, so we expect him to improve greatly off that run where he was caught three-wide the trip on the back of a very slowly run race where leaders on the fence were favoured. Now out to 2000m and back to a weak Class 1, Ryan Maloney should be guiding the Group 3-placed galloper to victory. He will take plenty of beating.

The second race of the afternoon sees a nice field of two-year-olds step out over 1200m, including debut winners Jamaican Rumba and Yiska, but we are hoping that Ekaterina can get the job done on debut. The Robert Heathcote-trained filly is a half-sister to dual Group 1-placed filly Startantes, so if she has similar ability, she can be a debut winner. The daughter of Russian Revolution showed plenty of smarts in her only trial to date, when winning at Doomben over 840m on March 15. Of the four two-year-old trials over that distance on that morning, Ekaterina was the quickest of the lot, and we have already seen some of the other youngsters from that group come out and win or run well in town, including Hang Five and Flop Turn River. She only has to carry 52kg under Leah Kilner, and she won’t have to do any work from barrier two. She could be pretty smart.

Rob Heathcote and Leah Kilner combine in the penultimate with four-year-old mare Minjee. The daughter of Not a Single Doubt hasn’t won since her two-year-old season where she was up there with Queensland’s top two-year-olds. Five starts ago, Minjee finished seventh behind Zoukina who went around in Saturday’s $500,000 Country Championships Final at Royal Randwick, so that is a great form reference for for this Benchmark 70. This mare was only beaten a length at Ipswich over this distance last time out, and the runner-up from that race, Spirit’s Charm, has since won, and Yulong Status went around on Saturday at Eagle Farm. With just 52.5kg on her back, we are confident that Minjee can get a breakthrough victory.

Mornington Racecourse is set to host its second meeting in nine days, when the track hosts an eight-race card on Monday afternoon where the track is rated a Good 4, with the rail out 3m the entire circuit. There was no distinct pattern on Mornington Cup Day when they last race here, so we expect every horse to get their chance when the meeting kicks off at 1:30pm AEST.
Mornington Best Bet – Fine Weather

Our best bet of the day comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie when the Mitchell Freedman-trained Fine Weather looks to build on his recent form. The four-year-old gelding was last seen finishing second beaten a lip at Kilmore on March 24 when running into one better late on. He took up a front-running role on that day, but seemingly his best results come when settling midfield and running on late. With an abundance of early speed in the race, look for Jordan Childs to have him settled midfield with cover, where he should gain a nice tow into the race. Fine Weather has the best turn of foot in the race and with the way the track at Mornington has been playing recently, he should be able to quicken nicely approaching the turn and ultimately proving too hard to hold out.

Next Best Bet at Mornington – Fortune Follows

Despite needing to lug 63.5kg on Monday, the Patrick Caboche-trained Fortune Follows simply looks too hard to beat over the 1200m sprint. He was beaten under a half-length when carrying the same weight at Kyneton on March 3 when copping a bump at a crucial point and deserved to finish closer, if not win on that day. In the small field of seven, we expect Arron Lynch to have the five-year-old gelding settled in the second half of the field and have him unleash down the centre of the track. He has had seven starts at the track and trip for a win and four minor placings, so we know he will handle the conditions. As long as he can handle the big weight, Fortune Follows looks over the odds at $4.40 with online Bookmakers.

Best Value Bet at Mornington – Excela Bella

Despite not running in the top three from seven career starts, we’re giving the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Excela Bella a chance over 1200m. The three-year-old filly looks set to gain an uncontested lead throughout, something she wasn’t afforded at Kilmore last time out when needing to travel wide with no cover. This is certainly not the hardest maiden going around and if she can see out the 1200m, then Excela Bella looks a good bet at $9 with Neds.

Pompano Park has a 12-race card scheduled with the feature rolling in Race 6 an Open Trot with a $14,200 purse. The 0.50 Pick 4 starts in the same race. The sequence has a $15,000 guaranteed pool with a 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6

5-Max (9/5)-Lost all chance on an interference break caused by #6 last time. Hennessey takes over for Miller and could get revenge.
6-Flagman (3-1)-Has been in fine form and tonight will leave from post 6 instead of being handicapped with post 9. This Plano trainee is the one to beat.

Race 7

3-China Dream (3-1)-Hennessey should be on the point or in the pocket behind the program chalk. Either trip could work for a picture.
6-Another Daily Copy (1/1)-Nine-year-old doesn't race often and has only 2 wins in 16 starts over 2 years. So, not loving the even money program odds but this is a soft spot. Drops in for a tag and should be a player versus this crew.

Race 8

3-Splitsville (8/5)-This race is a real taffy pull and there is no value here. But someone has to win and Hennessey could provide the right steer to give this old-timer a chance to score.
4-Stache (8-1)-Has the speed to beat this group and if Spano provides a sharp drive an overdue win could happen at a decent price.
5-Overnight Shipper (8-1)-Will blast out as usual and maybe this field is shallow enough that Hoffman can hold the lead until the wire.

Race 9

3-Elrama N (3-1)-Can compete at this level and finally draws inside. Hennessey should have this 13-year-old in striking range at the head of the lane.
5-Fred And Roz (8-1)-Raced well in the 1st start of the meet versus this kind. Will take a swing that dropping back to a more comfortable spot will lead to a trip to the winner's circle.
8-Song Cycle Senese (7/2)-Had a 2-race win streak snapped when taking on $20k claimers from the 9-hole. Drops to a competitive level and can be a threat even with this post draw.

#1 Ty Ran a Homer This class dropper has shown speed in the past and now catches a group without a lot of early foot, which means he could be poised for a wakeup.
#5 Legit ML favorite just missed at the level and certainly is the one to beat, though the losing streak is now at 10 and he likely won't be anywhere near the 3-1.
#6 Big City Ralph Capable runner was a distant 2nd last time on the class rise to the level, so with that behind him, he figures to have a chance to one better that effort.
Race Summary If Ty Ran a Homer can find some of his prior form he's got every right to beat this group, and the price will be right to find out too.

#1 We Be There Class riser is a game horse, as he's won his last two by a neck in each, and while this is a tougher group, he is going for the hat trick and doesn't meet any world beaters.
#4 Load Up Moe Deep, deep closer is always at the mercy of the pace, so while he does usually deliver, it's a tough strategy to employ when you have to pass them all.
#8 Mr Thrifty Tricky read was well behind 'Moe last time and now goes off the claim for Correnti, which is an 0-for-9 angle, so it's likely he's angling for a minor award only.
Race Summary We Be There has some fight in him, and he drew well here too, as he can use his speed from the rail, which gives him a huge leg up on Load Up Moe, who will be well behind in the early stages.

#5 Seat of Honor The most experienced member of the field hasn't been out since 2/2 but was in good form when last seen, and the barn is a robust 4-11 off this kind of break, which says he figures primed.
#7 Louie's Wish Speedster drew well, as there's a bit of lick to his inside, but he's lost a lot in the stretch lately, which doesn't make you too confident he can last the entire way.
#9 Factor This In Stiff class dropper continues to plummet to find his level, and while he'd lap this field with his best, it's pretty clear those days are behind him.
Race Summary Seat of Honor has been in very good form of late, which is more than his two main rivals can say, yet he might be twice the price of both of them, which makes him an enticing prospect here.
