Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$30,000 Guaranteed Pool

Cal Expo starts the weekend with an 8-race card. The betting headliner is the 0.20 Pick 4 which begins in Race 5. The sequence has a $30,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5

1-Thisishowwedoit (6/5)-Plested trainee didn't sparkle in last when dropped to this level. Willing to use here thinking Svendsen will not be rolling hard early and will look for a covered trip. Should be in the mix but will try others who have some value.
4-Outlaw Blue By You (12-1)-Kennedy can get this price shot rolling down the lane and my take is the pace will be lively.
6-Bobs Time (6-1)-Won versus this kind on 1-28 and now Lackey takes the lines. This pilot could make a difference and like the one above the price should be right.

Race 6

2-Contemporay Legend (6-1)-Steps-up after taking the 1st picture of the year. Wasn't Kennedy's choice but Lackey should have in striking range throughout. Using and will play against the 8/5 morning line chalk #3.
6-Sherwood (9/2)-Comes off a sharp win and Kennedy sticks. Fits well with this crew and has hit the board in 5 of 6 this year with 3 wins.

Race 7

1-Tink And Tiger (6/5)-Comes off a win and nice effort from post 9. Should be a main player in what looks like a formful affair.
2-Almost Cut My Hair (3-1)-Has only 1 win in 2022 and now makes its 2nd start since an injured scratch. Svendsen takes the lines, and a big try could be coming.

Race 8

5-Raider Rose (4-1)-Lasix hasn't fully kicked in but last was better and this will be the 5th time using. Will take a swing the change to Plano makes a difference. Was driven more aggressively last week and will look for similar here.
7-Tartan Patch (2-1)-Appears to be a major player and should be the one to beat. The issue usually boils down to the trip and Goulet will need to do his part for a date in the winner's circle.

Keeneland Third Race. Post time: 2:04 ET
7-Crimson and Cream (6-1)

Shows the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch-out pattern and that angle, combined with the first-time-in-a-claimer class drop plus the addition of blinkers makes this son of Wildcat Heir a live item in this modest maiden $50,000 seller over a distance of ground. Although he finished off the board in both of his outings at Turfway Park, the Ben Colebook-trained colt earned competitive speed figures for this level, so under the assumption that he has improvement in him that most of the others don’t, the former $180,000 2-year-old in training purchase offers reasonable value in the win pool and in rolling exotic play at or near his morning line of 6-1.


Keeneland Seventh Race. Post time: 4:12 ET
11-Stay Restless (4-1)

After displaying considerable promise in his debut when finishing a sharp runner-up (while more than four lengths clear of the rest) in a hot maiden sprint at Gulfstream Park in February, this promising 3-year-old floundered on a wet track and finished a disappointing fourth as the 6/5 favorite the following month in a race that we’re inclined to dismiss. The Todd Pletcher-trained sophomore stretches out for the firsts time in this middle distance main track maiden affair and projects to inherit an ideal pace-stalking trip and then have every chance from there. A standout based on the speed figure he earned his first outing, the son of Empire Maker is a legitimate play at 4-1 on the morning line.


Keeneland Eighth Race. Post time: 4:44 ET
6-Modus Operandi (5-1)

Lightly-raced Frankel gelding is a true marathoner and gets ideal conditions to regain his winning form in this 12-furlong turf event card for second-level allowance horses. Effective on any surface, the Irish-bred 4-year-old is most effective when held up early and allowed to run late, and with the switch to expert grass rider Tyler Gaffalione, the Brendan Walsh-trained import should have every chance to produce a top effort. He’s not as fast on numbers as some of the others, but we’re anticipating a significant forward move and the price will be right in both the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

#2 To the Front The forward players in here are all pretty talented, and this guy might be most likely to be able to rate off it just a tiny bit and get the jump into the lane. He won't be 18/1 again tonight, but a repeat seems within reach.
#6 Barnstorm His form is all over the place, but he won a couple races at this trip over the local course in his more recent starts, and he's not a bad fit here with one of his better tries.
#4 Zaino Boys Tough to discount this one, as his ceiling is high enough to be competitive with these, but he is kind of all or nothing on the engine and might meet enough other pace to make things difficult for him tonight.
Race Summary To the Front gets the edge, but unfortunately he'll get back to his old ways of getting bet a bit after rediscovering his form at 18/1 when returning here earlier this month.

Charles Town - Race #7

#6 Mady Rose She's a finishing hope in a race with maybe enough forward players to set the table for someone to get rolling on the backstretch, and the price should be right to see if she can turn the tables on a familiar foe tonight in Moonlit Shadow.
#2 The Sky is Falling She was a menace with statebreds last year when landing a couple stakes races here to close out her 2-year-old campaign. The waters get deeper today, but I respect her and the fact that she might have moved forward into her 3-year-old season.
#8 Moonlit Shadow She has been a pretty reliable underneath type in recent races, and she might be a bit more tactical than the top choice. Expecting she'll be in the frame again.
Race Summary Went price shopping a bit with Mady Rose, as she brings reliable enough form into a spot where she'll be a price. There are reasonable enough concerns about the two likely favorites, and her rider has been aces around two turns here lately.

Charles Town - Race #8
Picks Notes
#5 Tiz the Season She's probably all or nothing once she hits the top, and she'll hustle early to try to find position. I think she's probably working with a narrowing margin late in the lane, but she may hang around to score.
#10 Thislillimeofmine Finisher is likely to be along too late, but she stepped forward a bit last time out and would be in the picture with even another small step in the right direction today. Useful?
#12 Midnight Fling Won't spend too much time here, as she's not likely to get in, but I think she could wake up enough on the drop to factor while cutting back if she goes.
Race Summary Think there's a chance this turns into a battle of attrition late, but the hope is Tiz the Season will have built up enough of an advantage to hold on late. #2 Mojo Matters is another one who might be showing up late and is worth including.

My selection for this event is BRILEYS FAST PRIZE. Is tough not to look at based on speed figures which have been quite good - 68 avg - of late. The Equibase Speed Figure of 68 from his latest contest looks formidable in here. With a nice class figure average of 81, has one of the best class advantages in this group of horses. DK GOOD BABY GO - Must be given consideration given the class of races run lately. He has a good opportunity in this contest as conditioner, Valenzuela, has solid win clip with horses going this distance. MISS CLASSY EAGLE - Put up a quite good speed rating last time out. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a strong handicapping key. This entrant ranks at the top in this field.

2nd race – (9) Pharoah’s Song didn’t fire in her career debut but should fare better today after that experience. (1) Kivalina missed by a nose on Tapeta and figures to like turf. (3) Edye’s Candy will be a main threat if she bounces back to her debut effort. (4) Rosia Bay could be a contender in her debut. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-9.
5th race – (5) Salvaje was a solid second last time and deserves top billing here. (8) Only Kidding may appreciate a switch to turf. (9) Cruz Bay could run well after a layoff for Sharp. (10) Sand and Sea exits a decisive maiden win and should be a threat here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-8-9-10. Doubles: 5-8-9-10 with 1-2-3-7.
6th race – (3) Mouffy (C) dropped from 7-2 to 5-2 and missed by a head. Should atone for that narrow loss here. (2) Knowing Glance should be more competitive in a claimer. (1) Storm Kiss has speed from the rail and may not look back. (7) Taleofreadychianti should be tough off the cutback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3. Exactas: 2-3 over 1-7 and 1-7 over 2-3.
9th race – The Grade 3 Baird Doubledogdare Stakes - (1) Malathaat was the champion 3-year-old filly last year and is working sharply for her 2022 debut. Looks like the one to beat. (4) Bonny South should pose a serious threat in the stretch. (5) Crazy Beautiful should be able to make her presence felt in this spot. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5. Doubles: 1-4-5 with 2-3-5-7.
10th race – (3) On the Rise rallied for second last time and seems ready for a maiden win here. (7) Musical Design missed by a nose in her debut and will be the main rival. (2) Devilly will be well-suited by some added ground here. (5) My Lilly Mae should not be ignored in this field. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-7.

2^nd race [Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (3) Sinfully Sweet ran the best race of her career on the Aqueduct grass in November and then took the winter off awaiting the return of turf stakes. (9) U Should B Dancing raced on the dirt at the Big A during the winter but faced tougher horses on the grass. (6) Voleuse will debut for Christophe Clement and that alone makes her dangerous. (8) Lisa’s Vision comes from the barn of the Jorge Abreu who is also very good with first-time starters on both dirt and turf.
4^th race [Md 20000, 6F] – (7) Exact Change (D) was last seen in October taking money at the windows for Carlos Martin who I find is particularly adept working with fillies. (8) My Delicious has a series of second-place finishes at this level after showing early speed. (2) Mill Stone Creek returns from a December layoff with blinkers on. (5) Work It Out was sent off at 7-2 in her debut just three weeks ago at Aqueduct and showed some early speed.
8^th race [Alw 82000, 1 mi] – (1) Pipeline was last seen racing in the Cigar Mile (G1) in December but had three big speed figures before that in a listed stake at Keeneland and his maiden victory. (5) Rocco Strong is in fine form with a pair of wins and a recent second in an allowance, all at Aqueduct. (3) Uncle Moonlight returns from a July layoff as a new gelding after a win in a starter allowance. (7) Good Culture was also a starter allowance winner in his recent start at the Big A last month.
9^th race [NY, Md 40000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (11) Mighty Meister (D) returns to the grass which is his best surface and takes the blinkers off. Racing on the main track he was bet down from 5-1 to 3-1 last month. (4) Toga Dancer took the winter off after three grass starts in the fall and is now a gelding with first-time Lasix. (10) Johnselectricride improved in his three starts on the main track. On a muddy track last time, he set the pace. Horses who run well on wet tracks often do well on the grass. (3) B C Glory Days was claimed from a third in February by Ray Handal and now comes back as a gelding. He made three stars on the grass last year.
Best bets: Sinfully Sweet (2^nd); Pipeline (8^th). Best value: Exact Change (4^th); Mighty Meister (9^th).
