3^rd race [Alw 50000s, 6F] – (2) Manolito returns from a September layoff when he was very competitive at this level. Trainer has excellent stats with long layoffs. (3) Brilliant Brooks won for $20,000 after a long layoff and was claimed. New trainer De Paz tried an Aqueduct stakes race and now seeks a spot where the horse was successful in the past. (6) Magnificent Chrome was third in a similar spot last month leaving that same stake mentioned above. (5) Jake Rocks has been competitive at this level recently.
4^th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (3) Merger of Equals debuted in a turf maiden special weight where he ran third for a while and now drops down to a much softer spot. (2) Exact Change was third against open company at Aqueduct following a five month layoff. (1) Mrs Bell debuted at this level in March where she set the pace and finished second. Last time, she tried a maiden special weight at Finger Lakes. (4) Lindsay’s Laugh will make her first start for Rudy Rodriguez.
6^th race [NY, Md 25000, 6F] – (2) Crosstown Girl has moved from Laurel Park to the barn of Bill Morey who has good numbers with his new horses. This will be his first start against NY-breds. (1) Draw Off will make his third start off a layoff. Last time he tried the turf after running third at today’s level. (5) Eudaimonia was second at this level last month. (6) Dulce Gigante will debut for Bruce Levine who has been having his first-timers ready to run.
8^th race [NY, Alw 80000 N1X, 7F] – (2) Key Point has two career starts with a debut victory at Saratoga last summer and then a narrow loss in an allowance last month for Chad Brown. (7) Montebello was last seen running in a stake in California for Bob Baffert. He is now in the barn of John Terranova. He won a maiden at Del Mar last summer and then was second in a Saratoga stake for NY-breds. (5) Colormepazzi exits a series of open company starter allowances. Back in the summer he ran second in a state-bred allowance. (6) Win for Gold was a debut winner beating a horse that is now a stakes winner.
Best bets: Merger of Equals (4^th); Key Point (8^th). Best value: Manolito (3^rd); Crosstown Girl (6^th).

1st race – (8) Jeremy’s Jet put in a quick gate work for his debut and may lead throughout from the outside post. (2) Sergeant Countzler was third in his debut and should be the main threat. (3) Drew’s Gold is another firster who is working fast for his debut. (6) Top of My Game was also third last time and should be in the picture. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.
3rd race – (1) Drena’s Star returns to a claimer and should prove best in this field. (5) Impressed is back from a layoff and is worth a look here. (6) Quick Return drops off a neck win and cannot be dismissed here. (4) Soaring Bird should fit in well with this field. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5. Exactas: 1-5 over 4-6 and 4-6 over 1-5.
5th race – (2) Kygo drops into a claimer and seems ready for an improved effort. (8) Second of July should perk up back on turf in a claimer. (10) Fed Money might be more effective in a claimer. (5) Grey Streak could be a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-8-10.
7th race – (8) Macallan (B) didn’t fire on a wet track. Should be better off on a dry surface. (1) Greatheart comes off a big win and looks like the main rival. (6) Brigadier General has enough speed to be dangerous here. (3) Koolhaus was a game second last time and cannot be overlooked. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-6-8. Doubles: 1-3-6-8 with 4-6-7-10.
8th race – (6) Dreamful was second or third in her last five starts and seems overdue for a win. (7) Youens comes off three close losses and should be the one to fear. REMEMBEROLDTYMES - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. It looks like Hoyte had to come to know this filly on Apr 30th when riding her for the initial time. Back on again today. This filly notched a strong speed fig of 58 in her last contest. That speed fig should be good enough to win this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 VENENOSA (ML=3/1), #3 TALLY ROAD (ML=4/1), #5 VERMONT HOLIDAY (ML=6/1),

VENENOSA - Finished fourth on April 24th after the very long layoff. Doubtful if there will be improvement in this affair. No accomplishments for this questionable contender in a sprint contest over the last two months tells me that this filly is in a thorny spot TALLY ROAD - This filly hasn't had any recent favorable outcomes in short distance events. Tough to bet on her in this event. VERMONT HOLIDAY - 6/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any horse in a sprint of 7 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a short distance contest recently. This filly hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of outings.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - REMEMBEROLDTYMES - Class figure today of 56. Taking a significant drop in the level of competition and should wake up against a softer field. Worth a bet.

I've got to go with DIRECT ORDER. Franco has been hot the last month, winning at a nifty 18 percent rate. Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this group of horses in his last race. He ought to be given a shot given the formidable speed figures. CROATIAN - His 89 average has this gelding with among the best speed figures for this event. Had one of the most competitive Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last affair. JOYCEE HAZ PIZZAZ - Will probably compete strongly in the early speed battle which bodes well with this group of horses.

Most Likely Winner: (Race 2: Winning Drive #5, 7/2):

Looking for a nice winner, I think Rob Atras’ gelding by Flatter fits the bill. Sadly, this one’s sire passed away just a few days ago, and we mourn the loss of such a great champion. This offspring of his should be able to handle the class and the distance. Kendrick Carmouche gets the call, and I still think this 6-yr-old has gas left in the tank. He has late speed, and if he can get into the proper position by the top of the lane … with some stiff fractions to run into … then the day should be his. If he is 7/2 come post time, then it is time for a big bet.

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 7: Cucina #4, 5/1):

When Mike Maker and Kendrick Carmouche get together, they can form quite a jockey-trainer combo … that happens in this OC62.5kn2x. The Kentucky-based trainer does not always get the respect that he deserves at NYRA courses, so when I see a shipper like this gelding by Northern Afleet, I want to get on board. He has the class rating to do battle with a group like this one, and his work tab looks solid for a barn that can get hot … and stay hot. I think his price might drift up from 5/1, and that would suit me just fine.

Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)



Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 7F, ALLW80kn1x, 3+ NY Breds):

The “feature” on this Thursday card pits New York breds against one another. A quick thumb-through the numbers of one Mr. Chad Brown … he is just so tough to beat when it comes to 2nd off-the-bench, and 2nd Time Lasix. It doesn’t take a handicapping scientist to tell you that his colt by Into Mischief is going to take money, especially when you consider that Key Point’s #2 last race at Aqueduct was a near-miss … by a nose for owner Jeff Drown. Manny Franco gets the call on what should be an even-money-priced winner … and that is precisely why I want to take a shot against him. I am much more intrigued by the past form of Steve Asmussen’s A Longlongtimeago #1, Chris Englehart’s Colormepazzi #5, and John Terranova’s Montebello #7. Each of these entries could be close-to or are sure-to-be double-digit prices. They are not without merit, and I like them for different reasons. The Asmussen gelding by Maclean’s Music says sprinter, through-and-through. If Joel Rosario can get him close-to or on-the-lead, then that could go a long way to a victory. Englehart’s horse by Mission Impazible is rooted in open Starter ALLW Co., so this is a drop for him running against state breds. He also has early speed, which could be a valuable weapon. Last but not least, I would not count out Terranova’s new acquisition because the former Baffert-trainee ran nicely as a 2-yr-old. He gets 1st time Lasix, and the services of new NYRA transplant jockey, Flavien Prat. Let’s put together a ticket that will take advantage of these "price" horses, and see if we can get one of them home against the presumptive favorite of Brown’s!

#4 Eventually debuts in this spot for Clement in a race that looks pretty weak on paper. #2 Crosstown Girl will take a drop in class after a few poor starts at Laurel Park.

Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Artemus Citylimits was a nose away from victory last time out at a similar level at Keeneland, while looking to be the lone speed in todays contest. #5 Maxwell Esquire takes a drop in class for this one after taking on stakes company in his last three starts.

Race 8: Allowance

#2 Key Point looks to be a single in this sequence. After a nice victory on debut, the horse came back to run second in a tough allowance races last time out. He should move forward off of that effort today.

Race 9: Maiden Special Weight

#3 Pave My Way switches back over to the turf for this race, which should help her chances after getting rained off of the surface last time out. #2 Sals Dream Girl was fourth at this level last time out, which was 175 days ago, and should show improvement today with Saez aboard.
