We’re back on the racetrack Monday afternoon looking for winning horses. The Preakness Stakes is less than a week away and there isn’t much anticipation as usual for this race.

In most years we have a horse that won the Kentucky Derby looking for a win to set up a Triple Crown win at Belmont Park in the Belmont Stakes. That’s not going to be the case in 2022.

We’re looking at the opener to get the day started at Will Rogers Downs. Look for Boston Slick and Monet’s Devil to likely get into it in the stretch run.

Boston Slick is winless in seven races, finishing 4th, 5th, 9th, in his previous three attempts. He most recently finished 4th in a $9,000 event on April 27.

That result came after finishing 5th in the same grade on April 13. Boston Slick will need more for a win and Monet’s Devil should be tough to deal with at Will Rogers.

Monet’s Devil is 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 6th in four career races. In his latest outing, Money’s Devil placed 2nd behind Dude Drop Kid by a half-length in an $11,550 race.

Prior to that effort, Monet’s Devil showed 3rd for a $19,800 purse on April 4. A repeat of those efforts should be enough to edge out Boston Slick.

Race 5 covers 6 furlongs for a $27,500 purse. This looks like a good race between Box Seat and Grand Royale in the stretch. These two should battle it out for a win.

Box Seat is 5 for 24 in his career and is in need of a class drop after finishing 5th, 5th, 3rd in his previous three outings. He finished 5th on April 12 in a $27,500 event and then 5th most recently in the $50,000 Highland Ice Stakes on May 3.

He needs more, but fortunately for his connections, is open to improvement. Expect Box Seat to be tested hard by Grand Royale from the No. 2 hole.

Grand Royale is 6 for 21 and feeling confident recently. The gelding has finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st in good form in his previous six races.

It’s Preakness Week with the second leg of the Kentucky Derby on the menu this upcoming weekend. The Preakness Stakes is a $1.5 million dollar race, which feels like just any other big stakes race after the Kentucky Derby winner dropped out.
No Triple Crown Bid
Rich Strike is off the grid for the Preakness Stakes. That turns the Preakness into just a $1.5 million graded race. Without a Triple Crown bid on the line, there isn’t much special about this race for the general public.

All I’m concerned with is finding winning horses, so I’m not so disappointed. I’m also confident that Rich Strike wouldn’t have liked the distance of the Preakness. To open this week, we’re at Thistledown in Ohio.

The feature on the Monday night card at Woodbine Mohawk Park rolls in Race 9, a Free for All Trot with a $45,500 purse. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

7-Bettor Notbitter A (4-1)-Fits with this kind, McClure gets the nod and he had success in the past steering this 10-year-old. Makes the 1st start off the claim for the Guillemette barn who is posting 30% winners over the past 30 days. Looks like a player at a fair price.
8-A Boy Named Suuzz (3-1)-Won the 1st start for Moreau, comes back versus the same kind but moves outside which should help the price. This veteran can stay good for a while.

5-Hesohot Hanover (9/2)-Rallied well late in the mile to get up in time last week and recent form suggests it's best to not overlook. MacDonell should work a stalking trip and be in the hunt at the wire.

Race 9

1-Pemberton (3-1)-Has had issues and hasn't seen action in a betting race since in 10-17-20. Not sure what level of interest there will be to win this affair but both qualifiers were good. Willing to take a swing this 5-year-old will be ready for a top try. Mohawk record is a perfect (8-8) and may have the best chance to stop the winning streak of #3.
3-Oney Hall (5/2)-Winner of 6 straight didn't look as dominant in last but let's not split hairs. Oney is the one to beat and it wouldn't be a shock to see him posing again.

Race 10

1-All Wrapped Up (6-1)-Recent from hasn't been special but has been facing better. Looking for some lively fractions and Roy to work a more alert start. Will need things to fall into place but the price should be right.
2-Free Willy Hanover (5-1)-Drops after getting interfered with by #8 last week and this could be the spot to take a picture. Willy does well racing near the top of the stack and shouldn't have much trouble getting a good seat.
8-HP Mama B (7/2)-Made the 1st start since 11-13 and came up with a solid effort. Might have won except for drifting in down the stretch. Did come the back half in 55.1 and should be tighter tonight.

#1 Boo Boo Kitty Think she's going to be tough in here with some pace from the rail in a race without a ton of other serious early burn, and she gets Lasix while returning to a surface over which she ran well in her career debut. The one to beat.
#8 Up In Arms Considered her on top in this one, as she has some room to build on the debut try when she was slow to get involved and showed at least a little late enthusiasm. Don't think she's out of the question here.
#2 New Ways to Dream She's a good fit here while rising out of Tampa maiden claimers, but I worry a bit about her habit of being in a good spot late and failing to get the job done. Capable player wouldn't surprise underneath again.
Race Summary Boo Boo Kitty figures to have a go of it from the fence, and she should appreciate getting back in with maidens after fading late when facing winners last time out.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #5

#4 Backdoorparty He should be a decent price off the layoff here, and he has some ability to finish late in a race with some firsters and no apparent serious finishing threats so far on paper. Chance at a decent price.
#9 Youmustbea Weasley He has already landed a few underneath shares, and I like that he has some proven pressing pace from this draw, but I worry that he's a bit overbet with these.
#3 Keystone Hank He'll debut in what doesn't feel like the toughest spot we're going to see this season, and it seems like he might be ready enough to roll at first asking. Piece on debut?
Race Summary Backdoorparty should be a decent price here, and he has shown a bit of late interest in his races. Hoping a couple firsters will show some pace here to set things up for an experienced runner from off the splits.

#5 Tempus There might be enough forward players lined up in here to set things up for a runner from a bit off the pace, and this guy has some reliable late pace -- think he's along late to land this.
#7 Hard Count He's another with some finishing ability, and he looks like a pretty good fit with these off the Tampa tries. He might be able to sit just a bit closer than the top choice early.
#2 Nice Ace His best stuff would probably do the job here, and he has historically been VERY good over this course -- never out of the exacta in eight starts here. He's got some bounce back potential today, but I worry he's overbet.
Race Summary Tempus will have to be ready to roll off the layoff, but he might get a decent setup with a handful of forward players lined up in this spot. Hoping Hard Count and Nice Ace will keep the price playable here.
