Belmont Horses in Focus for Thursday, May 19
Posted on May 18, 2022 by David Aragona

RACE 1: REIGN OF LOVE (#1)

Likely favorite #2 Personal Best may win here at a short price, but I was a little disappointed with her last effort at Keeneland. She was bet down to 7:5 that day following a deceptively promising debut at Gulfstream, in which she was out of position early before closing into a slow pace and galloping out strongly. It was encouraging to see her display improved tactical speed in that second outing, but she stalked an extremely slow pace and failed to kick for home despite getting the jump on the closers. Perhaps this added ground will help her move forward again, as she is out of Grade 1 Flower Bowl winner War Flag. #4 Myriskyaffair could also attract support after finishing second in a different Keeneland maiden event last time. However, I thought she hung in the late stages after having dead aim at the leader in the stretch. She has a bit less upside than her main rival and lacks that one’s early speed. I’m going in a different direction with #1 Reign of Love. This daughter of American Pharoah just looked like a filly who needed a race on debut. She’s a massive, rangy animal with a big stride on her, and those types just aren’t well suited to Gulfstream’s tight turns and hard ground. She finished up well that day and gives the impression of one who should relish this stretch-out to 10 furlongs. Her dam won the G3 Matchmaker going 1 1/8 miles on turf. This filly is also a half-sister to G2 Mother Goose winner Unchained Melody and 1 7/8 miles stakes winner Noble Pursuit, so the pedigree is there.

RACE 4: ABUSE OF POWER (#1)

Morning line favorite #4 Gal in a Rush hasn’t yet crossed the wire first, having been elevated to her maiden win via DQ even though she wasn’t part of the incident. She clearly improved on the turnback to sprints last year, just missing in the Matron when coming with a strong late rush. She made a similar run from well back in the Stewart Manor but again ran out of ground. She wouldn’t need to improve much on those juvenile speed figures as she returns for her 3-year-old debut. Clement is a mediocre 15 for 77 (19%, $1.36 ROI) off 120-240 day layoffs in turf sprints over 5 years. She figures to get a decent pace setup here, but I didn’t love her at the expected short price. Clement’s other runner #6 Anador is a little more appealing to me. Clement tries to switch things up as he turns her back to the shortest distance she’s ever attempted. This French-bred displayed a nice turn of foot in her U.S. debut going a mile, but she did seem to get leg-weary in the late stages as she barely hung on to that victory. Since then she’s just lacked some late punch going two turns. She arguably ran her best race in France over 7 furlongs when third behind subsequent G3 winner Rosacea. I preferred them to fellow 3-year-old #2 Poppy Flower, who seemed to tail off for Wesley Ward last year and now goes out for a new barn. Yet I wanted to go in a different direction with an older rival. #1 Abuse of Power showed promise as a turf sprinter early in her career for Chad Brown. She hasn’t been quite as successful since the purchase and trainer switch to Philip Antonacci. However, she did run her best race for the barn over this course and distance in late 2021, earning a competitive 104 TimeformUS Speed Figure. She failed to hit the board in Florida this winter, but one of those starts came on synth, and she just couldn’t get two turns last time, especially after setting a very fast pace. The 106 TimeformUS Speed Figure she received puts her in the mix, and she figures to appreciate the turnback in distance for connections that rarely take too much money.

    RACE 6: GIRAMONTE (#8)

Two of the main players in this starter allowance turf sprint are drawn in the far outside post positions. #11 Cousin Andrew and #12 King Moonracer finished less than a length apart in two consecutive races at this level last fall. Cousin Andrew finished ahead of his rival on Oct. 23 when benefiting from a wicked pace up front. Yet King Moonracer then turned the tables on him on Nov. 20, crossing the wire just a neck ahead of his rival after Cousin Andrew encountered stretch traffic. Though both make sense here for barns that are both solid if unspectacular off layoffs. However, Cousin Andrew in particular does his best running from off the pace, so they could require some help up front. #6 Immortalization could be sent to the lead as he steps up off his maiden win at Aqueduct. However, he was beating a much weaker field that day, and I’m skeptical that he can replicate that form against a tougher field. I’m instead going in a different direction with #8 Giramonte. It took this gelding a while to break his maiden last year, but he ran well in most of his turf sprint efforts since getting claimed by Leah Gyarmati over the summer. He actually finished ahead of King Moonracer on Aug. 14 just prior to getting his diploma. He only made one start against winners on grass last fall and it was a total disaster. He broke a step slowly and was in trouble right from the start, as he got very rank racing in traffic, fighting his rider severely for the first three furlongs before calling it quits. He’s obviously better than that, and I think he can rebound coming off the layoff

Pimlico Race Course Picks for May 19, 2022 – Horse Racing Betting Tips

There is a big Saturday approaching in Maryland at Pimlico Race Course. The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico is the second leg of the Triple Crown. There isn’t a ton of hype surrounding this race after Rich Strike backed out of the race.
        Nine-Horse Field
Barring any scratches for the Preakness, there will be nine horses running in the Preakness Stakes. Nine horses aren’t exactly what some people were hoping to see.

For Thursday afternoon, we’re checking out the action at Gulfstream Park and Pimlico Race Course. Pimlico has eight races worth $266,000 on Thursday afternoon. Head below for our best Pimlico picks on May 19, 2022.

        Distance:6 Furlongs

        Purse: $17,000

Race 1 is a 6-furlong event for a $17,000 purse this afternoon. Expect Make It a Double and Princess Corey to have a big chance in the stretch in this one.

Make It a Double is 3 for 21 and finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 1st, 1st in her previous six races. After a $13,200 win on December 11, the mare is winless in four races.

In her latest race, Make It a Double showed 3rd in a $20,851 assignment on March 26. She’s been consistent and a grade drop to $17,000 should assist her chances.

Princess Corey is 3 for 9 in the first nine races in her career. She most recently notched a $29,329 win on April 24 at Laurel Park. That was a textbook 2 length win after stalking the field before the top of the stretch.

The mare is 1st, 4th, 2nd, 1st in her last four and looks to be in a good spot to follow up for back-to-back wins.

        Post Time: 1:49 p.m. EST

        Distance:6 Furlongs

        Purse: $21,000

Race 3 covers 6 furlongs on dirt for a $21,000 purse at Pimlico. The major players in the third event at Pimlico appears to be Revolutionary Road and Subject to Change.

Revolutionary Road is 7 for 39 and looking for better after finishing 7th and 8th in his previous two attempts. In his last race, Revolutionary Road didn’t have enough in a $30,575 race on April 10.

She also looked empty on March 5 in a $30,575 race as well for 8th place. Heading down to $21,000 should benefit Revolutionary Road nicely in this one.

Subject to Change is 4 for 14 in his career and finished 1st, 3rd, 5th in his previous three attempts. He’s coming off a $21,544 win on April 21 in impressive form.

Subject to Change beat Tom Terrific by a neck to secure the win as the favorite. He was coming off a decent performance on March 13 to show 3rd for a $25,295 prize.

The No. 6 has the most experience having success in this class and has a good chance of showing it again on Thursday afternoon.

        +1200 (12/1)
        (12) Fermat
        +350 (7/2)

        Post Time: 4:35 p.m. EST
        Distance:1 ⅛ Miles
        Purse:$33,000

The final race at Pimlico Race Course is a 1 ⅛ mile challenge for a $33,000 purse. Consideration for Heartness and Mr. D’angelo have to be made in this one.

Mr. D’angelo is 2 for 14 in his career and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th in his last four attempts. He most recently looked in fine form to place 2nd behind Delaware Destroyer by 2

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Churchill Downs - Race #3
          Picks Notes
#3 Pinky Toe She has been razor sharp through two Oaklawn wins while showing solid pace and turning away challenges. This is a tougher test today, and she does meet some other pace, but most of them have a pressing gear, so there is at least a chance she discourages them early and runs them off their feet.
#4 Muted She's probably tough here off the romp at Gulfstream, and she should be in a good spot early while tracking the top choice's pace. Think she's the one to beat with anything like her last.
#5 Chi Town Lady She should appreciate the class relief here after a string of four straight stakes tries off the maiden win, and she'd probably benefit if all the forward players were to hook up in the early stages.
Race Summary Pinky Toe has run two very good races so far in her career, and she might have a chance to clear these if Muted is willing to sit and press a bit rather than fight early. 'Toe has shown a bit of guts in those starts that should serve her well against this deeper group.

          Churchill Downs - Race #7
          Picks Notes
#3 Flatter Me Silly She's a reliable finisher in a race that has a couple of pretty decent pace players in it for a turf route, including one who probably has to hustle from the outside for position early. She'll show up late, and I love that she's so reliable.
#6 Urban Fairytale She tracked the pace before fading in her comeback run, but that leaves her some room to move forward with what might be a pretty good trip spying the splits, and she comes out of a race I like.
#8 Sunny One The turf form is pretty sharp overall, but that last one was a pretty big effort for her, and I'm not sure I'd want to take a much shorter price today to see if she can repeat it. Capable if she does, though.
Race Summary Flatter Me Silly is a reliable finisher, and the presence of a few potential pace players might allow her to settle near the inside and save some ground in hopes the pace starts to come back to her.

          Churchill Downs - Race #8
          Picks Notes
#8 Eivissa She gets Lasix for the first time today while returning off the bench, and there are some pretty nice company lines in her three starts from last year. Wouldn't be surprised to see a big effort today.
#1/1A Juddmonte Entry One entered to debut for red-hot Bill Mott, and the other ready to go first out for Brad Cox -- have to think one of these fillies will show up with something solid at first asking.
#4 Shezapistol She showed little in the debut run at Oaklawn, but she chased a tough winner who I picked to make it a perfect 3-for-3 in her career earlier on this card. Thinking she can do better here at a big price.
Race Summary Eivissa faced some tough groups last year, and this group doesn't feel impossibly tough, with the caveat that it depends a lot on how hard the Juddmonte pair hits. Hopefully that team will keep the price just playable on our layoff returnee.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            The Meadows - Race #6
            Picks Notes
#6 LITTLESAMMY Ranged up on turn, couldn’t gain in stretch.
#2 CUSSIN N FUSSIN Has speed, inner draw and Palone in bike.
#1 CELEBRATED MR K Finished in money in 12 of 16 this year, moves outside in.
Race Summary Littlesammy, an 8-time winner last year, took late money, circled the turn 4-wide, but couldn’t reach the top pair at this level. She can beat the boys with a move forward off that effort. Bet to win and place.

            Harrah's Philadelphia - Race #5
            Picks Notes
#6 TAKE ALL COMERS Late kick well-suited to this field, romped here two starts back.
#2 DREAMING OF YOU DE Breakaway attempt fell just short, takes class hike.
#4 WHAT SHOULD I GOO Chased 8-5 winner around the track in stakes, can stalk and pounce.
Race Summary Take All Comers trailed until early stretch in a division of the Graduate series at the Meadowlands, but he closed with a 4-wide flourish to get beat 1-1/2 lengths. He gets plenty of pace to rally into as today’s Best Bet.

            Scioto Downs - Race #2
            Picks Notes
#7 FORCEFUL POWER Wheels right back in same spot of easy win, likely repeater.
#1 IWON’T BACK DOWN AS Returns after 10/3-2-3 freshman season with $87k bankroll.
#9 KIRSI DREAM Seeks third win in a row, early position will be key.
Race Summary Forceful Power sustained a first-over rally as the pace slowed and drew away for an easy victory in the same spot from a similar post. No reason to think she won’t improve to 6-12 lifetime. Play 7-1 and 7-9 exactas.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 14 BLUEWATER LADY 6/1
                      # 4 PROLIFERATION 8/5
                      # 11 MINGLEWOOD (GB) 10/1
BLUEWATER LADY has a competitive shot to take this race. With a sound 91 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Overall the speed figs of this animal look competitive in this contest. There is a formidable chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. PROLIFERATION - Is tough not to examine based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been solid - 77 avg - of late. With a solid 71 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. MINGLEWOOD (GB) - She has very strong class ratings, averaging 80, and has to be given a shot here. Has run admirably when racing a turf route race.
