Belmont Park Hotlist - May 28

            May 27, 2022

Today’s NY Hot List races to watch – Saturday, May 28, 2022 at Belmont Park
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt
            Hot List Key:
            A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
            * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
2nd race [Clm 25000 N3L, 7F] – (3) The Big Grey (B) was claimed out of his first start in New York for $14,000 after breaking slowly and then rallying to get second beaten by only neck. (5) Secret Rules makes a very big drop down from second-level allowance races to this restricted claimer. He has consistently shown speed and then faded against the tough competition. (6) Dangerous Edge was claimed for $35,000 and will drop down for the new trainer. (4) Spectatorless moves back to the dirt which appears to be his best surface and gets a bit of class relief.
5th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi TURF] – (7) Full Count Felicia (C) came back from a winter layoff and ran second behind a filly that would win her next start. She was bet down to be the favorite from 4-1. (10) I’m Glad rallied very wide in her debut at Keeneland last month when she closed for second by less than a length for Jonathan Thomas. (3) With Bells On had the lead in the stretch in her first start for Todd Pletcher and finished third. (1) Libretto gets blinkers on for her second start after a third in her debut at Aqueduct last month for Jorge Abreu.
7th race [NY, Alw 80000 N1X, 1 1/16 TURF] – (9) Barrage (D) has been off for the winter and now changes barns after his last start when he was bet down from 6-1 to 4-1 at the Big A. (5) Rally Squirrel returned to NY-bred racing on the turf, set the pace, and then finished second. (10) The Man to See ships up from Maryland where he made his first three starts including two good efforts on the grass. Now, he will face state-bred competition for the first time after the winter off. (4) Lord Flintshire returned from a winter break and had traffic problems at the quarter pole.
10th race [NY, Md 40000, 6F TURF] – (6) Two Down (B) made his debut just two weeks ago and used a late rally to get up from third less than a length behind the winner. (8) Sharp Sensation dropped into a NY-bred race and crossed the line in first but was disqualified for bumping in the stretch. (10) Martinez was third in a dirt race after nine months off and was claimed for $25,000. The new trainer moves him back to the grass where he ran well against better competition. (4) Eminency will try the grass for the first time after four seconds this winter.

Best bets: Barrage (7th); Two Down (10th). Best value: The Big Grey (2nd); Full Count Felicia (5th).
            Saturday Pick 3 Special --
The Saturday Special $1 Pick 3 covers races 8-10 and includes the Soaring Softly (G3)

Today’s Churchill Downs Hot List races to watch
              Saturday, May 28, 2022

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman
              Hot List Key:
A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
              * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.
1st race – (4) Beachwalker won in his first start after the Asmussen claim and can make it two in a row here. (2) Starrininmydreams may perk up in a claimer. (3) Blue Jays is worth a look off the Hartman claim. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4.
4th race – (5) Maven tired after a six-month layoff but should be tougher here off that effort. (6) Totally Boss has been away for nearly a year but is working forwardly for this. (8) Country Final may benefit from a switch to turf. (3) Oceanic could be tough to catch in this spot. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-8.
6th race – (3) Naval Officer makes his first start after the Maker claim and cannot be ignored. (6) Lunar Rocket was third in his last two starts and belongs in the exotics. (12) Taffin rallied belatedly in his debut and can move forward here. (2) C J All the Way was a good third last time and has been working nicely since then. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-12.
8th race – (3) Ridley’s Major (C) was bet down from 5-2 to 9-5 and settled for third. Might appreciate a switch to dirt. (1) Bon Bueno didn’t care for slop but should be fine on a dry track. (10) Pioneering Spirit should also be well-suited by a fast track and the addition of blinkers. (12) Scotland Yard may be quick enough to get position and offset the outside post. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-10-12.
10th race – (8) Luck Money was a distant second to a tough rival in a NY graded stakes. Should welcome an easier assignment here. (5) Federal Papers won at this distance last time and will be a main threat. (1) Stand Tall will benefit from a rail trip, especially at this distance. (2) Disappearing Act can make his presence felt here. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-5-8.
No. Letter/Last race Today’s race Comment
              (3) Ridley’s Major C, 4/10 8 CD May like a switch to dirt

Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | May 28, 2022

                May 27, 2022

Race 10 at Churchill Downs | Saturday May 28 | Post Time 5:26 PM Eastern
Keertana Stakes | Purse $160,000 | One Mile and One-Half on Turf | Fillies and Mares, Four Years Old and Upward

                Top Contenders:

Stand Tall (1) won the one and only time previously she ran this mile and one-half distance on turf. That win came last October in a highly rated second level allowance race at Keeneland. In that race, Stand Tall stalked the pacesetter in second from the start then took over with an eighth of a mile to go and inched away. I’m expecting the same effort and result in this year’s Keertana Stakes, because Stand Tall gets the rail and there appears to be only one horse in the field likely to be in front from the start. That horse is Undisturbed (9), who has to be sent from her outside post and who wears blinkers and whose maiden win last August on the grass was earned leading from start to finish under Landeros, who gets on today after three races with another jockey this year. That puts Geroux, who rode Stand Tall to victory the first time he was aboard in that race last October, in the catbird seat. I’m not concerned about her eighth place effort three weeks ago because it is very obvious that was a prep for this race, given she had been off for seven months. With a very nice half-mile workout (47.6) one week ago which was the 12th fastest of 138 on the day, I firmly believe Stand Tall can post the mild upset at 6 to 1 starting odds and win this year’s Keertana Stakes.

La Lune (4) also offers value, opening at 8 to 1, although she does have a lower probability to win as compared to Stand Tall. La Lune imported from England last September and nearly won the Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon Stakes when rallying from 10th of 12 early to miss by a neck. She did not run as well in three races since but all three were tougher, grade 3 stakes. She makers her second start after returning from five months off and she takes blinkers off following a one race failed experiment. In her last start before the layoff and before importing to the U.S., La Lune won at this mile and one-half turf trip in England, rather comfortably by nearly two lengths, so she has proven capable of winning at the trip and class level.

Temple City Terror (7) is on a nearly identical pattern to the one prior to winning the 2021 Keertana Stakes. She finished third in a classified allowance race at Keeneland in April, 2021, then rallied from 16 lengths back to win this race last year under jockey Beschizza. After two third place efforts with other jockeys, and in graded stakes, she went on the sidelines from last August until last month. After the eight month layoff, Beschizza got back aboard and Temple City Terror finished third of seven after getting to second and within a half-length of the winner in the stretch. Similar to Stand Tall, that race for Temple City Terror was likely nothing more than a prep to defend her title this time and there is every reason to believe she’s going to be much more physically fit in this situation so she rounds out a strong trio of contenders which have an edge on the rest in terms of their probability to win.
For some exactas we can throw in Disappearing Act (2) and Luck Money (8) Disappearing Act (2) because both have run well at this 12 furlong turf trip but each has more second place finishes as compared to wins in their careers.

                Win bets:
Stand Tall (1) should be considered for a win bet at 3 to 1 or more.
La Lune (4) and Temple City Terror (7) can be considered for win bets at odds of 4 to 1 or more.
                Exactas:
Box Stand Tall (1), La Lune (4) and Temple City Terror (7).
Stand Tall (1), La Lune (4) and Temple City Terror (7) over Stand Tall (1), Disappearing Act (2), , La Lune (4) and Temple City Terror (7) and Luck Money (8).

I went to Churchill Downs, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita for my Saturday horse racing picks.

While they all had stakes-level competitions to offer, Santa Anita led the pack with five state-bred stakes races full of ambitious underdogs for our wagering pleasure.

I’ll let you get to it, but don’t forget to check out the full race cards for each of the three tracks at our top horse racing betting sites.

                  Good luck!
Saturday’s Horse Racing Picks for Churchill Downs

Let’s start on the turf course with race four, a 5-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward.

If Tyler Gaffalione rides the MTO/also-eligible Special Reserve into the starting gate, then bet them to win.

This six-year-old gelding has the clearly superior record in this race, finishing in the money for 17 of his 23 career starts, winning eight.

Those wins include the Maryland Sprint Match Series Stakes (Grade III) a year ago in May at Pimlico, the Iowa Sprint Stakes (Black Type) at Prairie Meadows last July, and the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (Grade II) last October at Keeneland.

That Phoenix win earned him a starting post in the Qatar Racing Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Grade I) at Del Mar in November, but he finished fourth in that race–one of the few races he’s failed to money. Still, his speed figures haven’t been under three digits in over a year.

Breeders’ Cup veteran Michael J. Maker trains Special Reserve for owners Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher.

If Special Reserve isn’t in this race, then buy a win ticket on the 5/1 underdog, County Final, with Brian Joseph Hernandez, Jr. in the irons.

This four-year-old gelding moneyed nine of his 15 career starts, winning three.

Steven M. Asmussen trains Special Reserve for owners West Point Thoroughbreds, William Sandbrook, and Anna Marie Shannon.

We’re back on the dirt track for race nine, a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m not as impressed with the favorite in this race as the morning-line is, so I’m betting my two dollars on the 5/2 underdog, Dennis’ Moment, ridden by Corey J. Lanerie.

This five-year-old finished seven of his 13 career starts in the money, winning three, including the Iroquois Stakes (Grade III) in 2019 here at Churchill Downs.
Since then, he notably finished third in the Mr. Prospector Stakes (Grade III) last December at Gulfstream Park. Versus the rest of this six-horse field, he’s the standout.

Dale L. Romans trains Dennis’ Moment for Albaugh Family Stables LLC.

Race ten puts us back on the turf for the Keertana Overnight Stakes, a $160,000 purse grass run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I like the second-favored (at 7/2) entry—Luck Money, piloted by Brian Joseph Hernandez, Jr.

This five-year-old mare moneyed 14 of her 18 career starts, winning three—which makes her the statistical start in this nine-horse field.

Her victories include a win in the Zagora Stakes (Black Type) at Belmont in 2020. More recently, she finished second in both the Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes (Grade III) at Keeneland last October and the Sheepshead Bay Stakes (Grade II) at Belmont Park earlier this month. She’ll do.

Ranked among the top 100 in earnings, wins, or both for the past seven years, Arnaud Delacour trains Luck Money for owner-breeder Dr. Catherine Wills.
Horse Racing Picks for Gulfstream Park

Race six is a five-furlong turf handicap for three-year-olds and upward. I’ll go along with the morning line for this race: Bet the 3/1 favorite, Warrior’s Pride, with Chantal Sutherland aboard.

This all-or-nothing four-year-old colt finished in the money five of his 13 career starts, winning all five, including the Texas Glitter Stakes (Black Type) a year ago March, and the Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint Stakes (Black Type) last July—both here at Gulfstream.
Let’s hope for this race Warrior’s Pride brings his “All” game.

Antonio Cioffi trains Warrior’s Pride for owner-breeder Just For Fun Stable, Inc.

Race ten is a five-furlong allowance optional claiming race on the turf course for three-year-olds and upward. I like the 2/1 favorite, Sayyaaf, ridden by top jockey Emisael Jaramillo.

This six-year-old is a real standout in this talented field of eight, with 13 money finishes in 20 career starts, eight of those wins.

Michael J. Maker trains Sayyaaf for Eccentric Club Racing Stable.

We’re on the dirt track for race eleven—the Big Drama Stakes, a $65,000 purse, seven-furlong run for Florida-bred three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the 8/1 sleeper, Sir Ollie, with Leonel Reyes in the irons.

This four-year-old dark bay colt has a solid record: Seven money finishes in seven career starts, three of those wins. While the favorite is no slouch in the running department, no entry in this nine-horse filed can better Sir Ollie’s determination to win.

                  I like Sir Ollie’s chances. A lot.

Saffie A. Joseph, Jr. trains Sir Ollie for owner Peter Vegso.
My Saturday Picks for Santa Anita Park
Race three — Crystal Water Stakes

This is a $100,000 purse, one-mile grass run for California-bred or California-sired three-year-olds and upward. While I think the 5/1 underdog Hail Freedom stands a chance, I’m backing the morning-line favorite, Jimmy Blue Jeans, ridden by veteran jockey Kyle Frey.

This four-year-old gray roan gelding moneyed six of his eleven career starts, five of them wins. He hasn’t performed particularly well at the graded stakes level, but he did win the Snow Chief Stakes (Black Type) last June here at Santa Anita.

With two decades in the horse racing business, Andy Mathis trains Jimmy Blue Jeans for owners Perry Bruno, John Gezon, and Robert M. Jones.
Race four — Thor’s Echo Stakes

This is a $100,000 purse, six-furlong dirt track run for California-bred or California-sired three-year-olds and upward. Despite this five-horse field being full of serious competitors, I’m going to go along with the morning line and bet on the 8/5 favorite, Tigre Di Slugo, with Kyle Frey aboard.

This seven-year-old gelding finished in the money seven of his nine career starts, winning three. He notably finished second in last year’s San Carlos Stakes (Grade II) and last month’s Kona Gold Stakes (Grade III)—both here at Santa Anita.

Co-owner Mike Puype trains Tigre di Slugo for Slugo Racing, Tiger Racing, Inc., and himself.
Race five — Snow Chief Stakes

This is a $150,000 purse, 1-1/8 mile turf run for California-bred or California-sired three-year-olds. I’m backing the 4/1 underdog in this race—Royal ‘n Rando, piloted by veteran jockey Frank T. Alvarado.

This three-year-old gelding finished six of his eleven career starts in the money, winning four.
Not a bad record, but let’s look just at 2022: Six money finishes in seven starts, four of those wins.

His most recent win was the Silky Sullivan Stakes (Black Type) earlier this month at Golden Gate Fields. Yeah. He’s got this.

With more than 45 years in horse racing business, Steven Specht trains Royal ‘n Rando for owners Larry D. Williams and Marianne Williams.
                  Race eight — Melair Stakes

This is a $150,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles dirt track race for California-bred or California-sired three-year-old fillies. While the favorite in five-horse field is the only filly with a stakes win, I’m hard-pressed to find anything else to recommend her.

That’s why I’m buying a win ticket on the 4/1 underdog, Youteyourhonor, piloted by Tyler Baze.

This dark bay filly moneyed five of her seven career starts, winning four.

Horse racing veteran Clifford W. Sise, Jr. trains Youteyourhonor for owners Theodore Aroney, Betrand Hug, Philip R. Henry, and Kathleen L. Henry.
Race nine — Fran’s Valentine Stakes

This is a $100,000 purse, one-mile turf run for California-bred or California-sired fillies and mares three-years-old and upward. I’m agreeing with the morning-line on this one: Bet the 4/5 favorite, Alice Marble, with top jockey Juan J. Hernandez in the irons.

Five-year-old dark bay mare finished seven of her ten career starts in the money, winning four, including the Wishing Well Stakes (Black Type) in here at Santa Anita in February.
She also finished second in both the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint Stakes (Black Type) in January and the Monrovia Stakes (Grade II) last month.

Philip D’Amato trains Alice Marble for owner-breeder Nicholas B. Alexander.

Belmont Park Picks: Soaring Softly S. draws capacity crowd on May 28
                    By J.N. Campbell

Belmont Park Picks - Saturday, May 28, 2022

                    Race 1: 1-3-6-2
                    Race 2: 5-6-2-4
                    Race 3: 4-1-5-7
                    Race 4: 10-2-5-7
                    Race 5: 4-1-6-10
                    Race 6: 7-1-8-3
                    Race 7: 9-3-2-6
                    Race 8: 9-5-2-3
                    Race 9: 9-7-4-12
                    Race 10: 4-6-8-11
**Most Likely: Stage Raider #9 (Race 8)**
**Best Value: Mozay #4 (Race 5)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 8: Stage Raider #9, 3/1):

In this tough-looking OC62.5kn2x match for 3-yr-olds and up, I would not hesitate to wager on one of Chad Brown’s entries. I like this colt by Pioneerof the Nile, over his well-known stablemate, Highly Motivated #2. Through the spring, Brown had the 4-yr-old against some classy foes at Gulfstream Park and at Keeneland. After that last race, his conditioner shipped him to the Oklahoma track up at Saratoga to complete his work tab. He gets Irad Ortiz once again, and he should be a good price on the tote on Saturday afternoon. Getting on or close to the lead, breaking from that outside gate, seems to be in order …

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #9

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 5: Mozay #4, 9/2):

HOF trainer Bill Mott has this 4-yr-old filly by the well-thought-of Uncle Mo headed back to the post against maiden company. She has 5 lifetime starts, and is still looking for that elusive score. The time is right, as jockey Manny Franco takes over the piloting duties from Jose Ortiz. I like her chances because I am hoping her M/L odds will drift above 9/2. If that is the case, then she is worth a hefty wager. She wasn’t $350k at the Fasig Sale back in August of 2019 for nothing.

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #4 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 7F, Soaring Softly S. (G3), $100k, 3F):

With a full-field, this Grade 3 race on the Belmont Widener Turf Course is easily going to be the best race of the weekend to play. You have a dozen 3-yr-old fillies, plus an AE, so the right wager could pay handsomely. When it comes to a top selection, I know that Christophe Clement’s outfit is rolling along nicely, especially when it comes to the grass. For that reason alone, I am pretty keen to back his 3-yr-old filly by Quality Road. Derrynane #9 impressed me last time out at Keeneland in the Limestone S. $200k when she tried to get up against Wesley Ward’s Ruthin. Joel Rosario asked the fabled question, and his mount just did not have quite enough. In her defense, she was making her 1st start of the year, coming off a ’21 campaign that ended with the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2). I happen to think that she can go longer, and wants to. Her trainer has given her some works under her saddle coming back to Belmont, and Rosario is once again aboard. Let’s use her on top, and roll the rest of the field underneath for a juicy Exacta Wheel. If a longer price comes in … we score! Should be a fun one to wager on and watch … don’t forget the AE!

                    Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Wheel, 9 w 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/10/11/12/13AE

Weekend GamePlan for May 28, 2022: Picks for Soaring Softly, Melair, Oak Brook
                      Marcus Hersh

The big day for North American stakes action this weekend is Monday, and the Saturday calendar, which includes several Cal-bred stakes, is shallow. But here we go, nonetheless.

                      Soaring Softly

This seven-furlong turf contest for 3-year-old fillies is deep, but the local forecast is cause for some concern. It looks as of Thursday like there won’t be enough rain to move the Soaring Softy to dirt, but DRF’s David Grening reported likely favorite Derrynane will be scratched if trainer Christophe Clement deems the course too soft.

That’s too bad, because trying to beat Derrynane on a wetter course was part of the appeal this race held. Derrynane’s lone subpar performance came the one time she raced on a course with give in the ground, last summer at Saratoga, and it very much looks like she’s a filly who wants good going at worst. Rain-softened turf accentuates the other concern for the filly, who will be going 1 1/2 furlongs farther than she’s raced, and even as the highest-rated filly in the race, Derrynane, if she takes her spot in the gate, might not run to her price.

Haughty, a fine third last out in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, surely takes action making her 3-year-old debut for very popular connections. She wants to run farther than this in any case and a lack of real pace in the Soaring Softy will make it doubly difficult for Haughty to get up in time.

Chardy Party’s debut win turf-sprinting at Keeneland was eye-catching to say the least, and she finished faster (granted, it was 12 days later) than Derrynane or anyone else in the Limestone Stakes, run at the same 5 1/2 furlongs over the Keeneland turf as Chardy Party’s debut. But trainer Wesley Ward has a negative stat working here: Over the last five years, Ward-trained debut winners, 3 years old or older, who turf-sprinted in their second career start went 9-0-2-1. Five of those horses were 2-1 or lower, eight of them 6-1 or lower.

Ouraika appears to be the best value. You can toss two of her four North American starts since the filly wants no part of two-turn racing. She pulled too hard last out at Keeneland and was wide with no cover on the far turn, actually making a nice little run at her very talented stablemate Spendarella to the quarter pole before flattening out.

When second against males last Dec. 2 going six furlongs at Aqueduct, Ouraika once again raced wide on the turn with no cover while being moved prematurely to the lead.

She wove confidently between rivals and might have waited on horses in her Santa Anita stakes win, has a touch of positional pace that ought to come in handy, and was comfortable going wire to wire over good-to-soft ground in her French win. That was no great field she beat, but the runner-up did come back with a win and a second-place finish while facing stronger competition.

                      Melair

I was very high on Big Switch in the Jan. 8 Santa Ynez Stakes, but something went amiss with the filly that day, as she didn’t come close to hitting her true form. Her subsequent turf try is an easy toss, and Big Switch has come back from a freshening with a very encouraging work pattern. Even when she was winning sprint races – the one at Del Mar was especially good – Big Switch had the look of a route horse, and she gets to make her two-turn debut against a highly suspect group of California-breds. I supposed she’ll be the favorite, but between the layoff and two subpar running lines, her win price might turn out to be fair.

                      Oak Brook

Saturday in Chicagoland is forecast to be sunny, but several days before Saturday are not, and the Hawthorne grass course, little used this spring, should at best be rated good. That is good news for Cat Attack, who has shown a true affinity for courses with give in the ground, including Hawthorne’s.

I don’t know what went amiss with Cat Attack in her Hawthorne turf stakes flop last fall, but her most recent race, a sloppy-track dirt sprint, was purely a prep for this. She has post 9 but adds blinkers and looks like the controlling speed – and most likely winner – of this Illinois-bred stakes race.
