Laurel Park Late Pick 4 | Friday, June 17

    June 17, 2022 | By Frank Carulli

LAUREL PARK LATE PICK 4 ANALYSIS
    Friday, June 17
Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 was plagued by short fields last week, but this week’s sequence looms much more difficult with a pair of full fields as part of the 50-cent wager. Here’s a look at the action:

LRL 6th race (3:10 EST) -- Go deep in the opening leg of the sequence and keep an eye on the odds for several first-time starters. LADY WHISTLEDOWN and LOVING CUP are working forwardly and both are sired by 15-percent turf sprint sire Kantharos. GIFT OF GAB might need more ground, but her dam was 18/6-3-5 and a $100,000 earner on the grass. DIVINE FASHION can’t be discounted but reliable trainer Michael Trombetta, surprisingly, is 1-47 with first-time starters on turf in the last three years. Of those that have run, WINKED – whose dam was a multiple stakes winner on turf – held second after she lost the lead at the top of the stretch in a race that produced a winner and two runners-up from the last four finishers. WALKS LIKE A LADY set the pace in a one-mile MSW race despite a bumpy start when last seen in the winter, but the runners that finished ahead of her are a combined 32/1-1-8 since then. FASHIONISTA lacked speed, got up to finish third and will appreciate the extra half-furlong today.

LRL 7th race (3:41 EST) -- COVERT CAT rallied 3-wide off a contested pace battle to finish second behind the slow-starting, 3-to-5 favorite in a solid debut at Monmouth. FRIGHTLAND lost several lengths when he stumbled early, advanced into contention under a hard drive but settled for third after he steadied between the top pair in late stretch. GRAND MANNER led from the start to the top of the stretch but had no breathers in one-mile maiden claimer on the turf. He worked 5F in 1:01.2 since then and is worth using at 6-1 on the morning line.

LRL 8th race (4:14 EST) -- PRINCE PERI averaged a 74 Beyer speed figure while finishing in the money in 3 of his last 4 starts sprinting on the turf. He finished a willing third in a 5F allowance last out that produced two solid next-out winners. JUSTWAVEANDSMILE rallied to win three consecutive 5-1/2F grass sprints when last seen at Laurel Park in the fall, the latest of which yielded three follow-up winners. SUE LOVES BARBADOS returns from a seven-month layoff and starts outside post 6 for the first time in his career, but he showed late foot in her turf sprints and could factor in this suspect field. DATHOSS makes the Pick 4 ticket at 30-1 after he chased fractions faster than a same-day turf stakes race and makes his second start after 45 days away for a barn that excels with that angle. AL LOVES JOSIE tries to carry-over his main-track form to the turf, but his sire’s offspring are 0-for-20 on the lawn and his dam was well-beaten in both grass tries, so try to beat the morning-line favorite.

LRL 9th race (4:47 EST) -- THE CAIRO KID set a faster pace than a 5F allowance earlier on the card and got caught by repeat winner Jimmy The Kid en route to his fourth runner-up finish in a row. SILENT SERVICE drops to his level of claim, where he romped going a route of ground.

    Suggested 50-cent Ticket
    LRL 6th Race: 2, 3, 4, 9, 12
    LRL 7th Race: 1, 6, 7
    LRL 8th Race: 5, 9, 12, 13
    LRL 9th Race: 5, 6
    COST: $60

      The Americans

Keeneland stakes winner Slipstream gets the Americans back in the starting gate after a Thursday absence, taking her place in the stalls for the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (Race 2). She’s being offered around 16-1 as a longshot chance with the British Bookmakers. A pair of decorated 3-year-old American fillies in Pizza Bianca, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, and Spenderella, unbeaten in 3 races (including stakes wins at Gulfstream and Keeneland), take part in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes (Race 4) over a mile. They are 16-1 and 11-1, respectively, among international Bookmakers. Friday’s final domestic entrant is Ruthin in the Holyroodhouse Stakes (Race 7), trying to get Wesley Ward back into the Royal Ascot winner’s circle after a frustrating start to the week. Ruthin was third at Royal Ascot last year and exits a victory in stakes company at Keeneland. She’s co-third choice in the UK books with several others at 12-1.

      The Main Event

Inspiral is solidly favored at 3-1 in the UK books to take the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, today’s one-mile feature. The John and Thady Gosden trainee won all 4 starts last year and makes her sophomore return under Frankie Dettori. She won Group 1 and Group 2 stakes at the Coronation’s distance while a juvenile. Gosden last won the Coronation in 2012, while Dettori scored it in 2020. Cachet figures prominently from the start. She wired the Group 1 1000 Guineas in May and narrowly missed against France’s top 3-year-old filly milers last out. The US contingent is among the strongest of the week in this race. Breeders’ Cup champ Pizza Bianca got back on the winning beam at Pimlico last out in an easy tune-up for Christophe Clement. Meanwhile, Spenderella has looked the best in the 3-year-old filly turf division domestically after wins in the Hercomesthebride at Gulfstream and Appalachian at Keeneland for trainer Graham Motion. Her front-running style could challenge Cachet early.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Charles Town - Race #6
              Picks Notes
#1 Walk a Fine Line Hoping the pressing types leave her alone out of the gate, as she has that dangerous pace to put to use from the fence. Other speed seems to be drawn further out, so maybe an easy enough lead is there for the taking.
#6 Peaceful Child Not great to see him drop in off the dull comeback effort, but he has some obvious upside with that race under his belt, and he might still be good enough to beat this claiming group.
#7 Kinky Frolic She's got some positional pace and has run okay here in the past, but she has had a history of settling for slices, and I wonder if she's vulnerable to finding one or two of these a bit too tough.
Race Summary Walk a Fine Line should have a go of it from the inside, and there isn't a ton of other super serious pace, so maybe she gets a lead that is just soft enough for her to outlast these.

              Charles Town - Race #7
              Picks Notes
#3 Be Be Bop Think he's a threat right back with these, as he looks like the controlling pace at this abbreviated trip, and he's a really good fit with this group tonight.
#7 Not a Trick Riser has rattled off two in a row in New York, and he owns seven wins over the local footing. Think he's quick enough to keep tabs on the top choice.
#1 Majestic Seas Reliable type might end up getting a tricky trip, as the top choice is probably quicker early, and this one might have to hustle to keep position from the inside.
Race Summary Be Be Bop can win right back after turning in another good effort last out, and I'm just not sure anyone in here can really prompt him enough early to soften him up late.

              Charles Town - Race #8
              Picks Notes
#5 Holy Pink She has had some chances, but her local debut was pretty good last out for more than twice this price, and I think she can probably hit hard with this cheaper group.
#1 Hidden Persuasion She showed up with some energy after a terrible start in her debut last year, and she's obviously not meant to be much as she makes her second career start off the layoff at age six. She'll get Lasix here, and this isn't a group of world beaters.
#9 Tough One She seems logical after flashing some chasing pace and tiring in her first three starts, but she isn't meeting much and should be in the mix early on.
Race Summary Holy Pink gets a pretty decent lean for me in the finale, as she raced well enough over the surface here, and she's dropping into what feels like a win spot tonight.

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Yonkers - Race #1
                Picks Notes
#2 P H KENNY Hit board in last four starts at this level, good value play.
#1 KEYSTONE DASH Takes needed drop, figures tough on best from the rail.
#3 ALLGONOWHOA Discount post 8 try upon arrival from Meadowlands, could rally for minor awards.
Race Summary P H Kenny couldn’t reach the front-running favorites through a :56 back half, but he finished third and could spring an upset at a proven class level. Play a 2/1,3/ALL trifecta.

                Meadowlands - Race #7
                Picks Notes
#1 ATOMIC BLAST N Can handle class hike with rail draw against rival who beat him.
#10 IDEAL STAR N Zipped 3/4s in 1:21 and change and extended lead in last pair.
#8 MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING Gets pace to run at and a major driver change.
Race Summary Atomic Blast N chased a rapid pace set by repeat winner Ideal Star N and settled for second best, but he can turn the tables from the rail while Ideal Star N starts from post 10. Both rivals step up in class but can handle it in their current form. Play 1-8 and 1-10 exactas.

                Woodbine-Mohawk Park - Race #10
                Picks Notes
#1 SPORTY TORI Earned top recent fig in defeat, duplicate of prior race gets her in contention.
#6 GOODNIGHT IRENE Made late run at winning fave, finished ahead of ‘Tori.’
#9 MISS ROCKADALI Speed and winning ways compromised by post 9 but value remains.
Race Summary Sporty Tori followed the move of Nightlife Seelster and ran second after the pace fell apart two starts back, then showed some late interest in a fast, 1:50.4 race last week. She projects an ideal trip from the rail, so bet to win and place.

                  The Walker Group Picks

                  # 4 MAD TABBY 7/2

                  # 1 JOE G'S PAYBACK 2/1

                  # 2 BOLD LEGEND 6/1

MAD TABBY is the most competitive wager in this race. Always good to invest in a handler with this kind of quite good win percentage - 17 percent - at this distance & surface. The conditioner wheels this one back almost immediately to race again. Jordan has a win percentage of 21 over the last 30 days. JOE G'S PAYBACK - A nice return on investment of +7 with this jockey and conditioner combo. Will likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the competition. BOLD LEGEND - Has put up strong speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. The price could be right on this entrant.

                    # 7 HURRICANE DIRECTOR 12/1
                    # 12 HOT CAROL 4/1
My choice in this race is JESS FOR KICKS. With Rodriguez getting the mount, watch out for this animal. Has been running quite well lately and will probably be on or close to the front end early on. HURRICANE DIRECTOR - Will make a strong performance versus this lot. HOT CAROL - This field of horses is much easier than the last one she was up against. Has some encouraging angles which make this one a bet.
