Top Horse Racing Picks for Saturday, June 18, 2022
By J.W. Paine in Horse Racing

We’ve got plenty of stakes action at all three tracks I chose for my Saturday horse racing picks.

Gulfstream Park leads off with the Game Face stakes and a couple of high-priced allowance runs. Monmouth Park immediately takes it to the next level with four solid stakes matches.

And then Santa Anita tops out our wagering day with three stakes runs that include a couple of prediction-defying two-year-old stakes races.

Overall, I found fistfuls of underdogs and even a sleeper or two, so wager on!

Oh, one last thing before you jump down to the good stuff: Remember to check out the full race cards at one of our best sites for horse racing betting.

      Good luck!
Saturday’s Horse Racing Picks for Gulfstream Park
      Race five

This is a one mile and 70 yards allowance optional claiming race on the all-weather track for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m agreeing with the morning line and betting my two dollars on the 3/1 favorite, Smart Spending, piloted by Leonel Reyes.

This four-year-old filly finished eight of her 13 career starts in the money, five of those wins.

Victor Barboza, Jr., who was ranked among the top 100 in wins for both 2018 and 1019, trains Smart Spending for Racing Bull Stables, Inc.
Race seven — Game Face Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, 6-1/2 furlong run on the dirt track for three-year-old fillies. My money’s on the 5/2 underdog, Last Leaf, ridden by Miguel Angel Vasquez.

This dark bay filly moneyed seven of her 12 career starts, winning four. Those wins included the Hollywood Beach Stakes (Black Type) last September and the Melody of Colors Stakes (Black Type) in March–both here at Gulfstream.

Forty-year horse racing veteran Ronald B. Spatz trains Last Leaf for Monarch Stables, Inc.
      Race eleven

This is a 1-1/16 miles handicap on the all-weather track for three-year-olds and upward. I like the second-favored (at 3/1) Calibrator, with veteran jockey Junior Alvarado in the irons.

This five-year-old has better stats than the morning-line favorite. For the record, Calibrator finished in the money seven of his eleven career starts, winning five.
He’ll face some serious competition in this eight-horse field, including some graded stakes winners like Ramsay Solution that haven’t raced in a year or more. Calibrator’s got this.

Saffie A. Joseph, Jr.—who also handles the third-favored Ramsay Solution—trains Calibrator for Sonata Stable. Incidentally, if Calibrator weren’t in this race, I’d be very much inclined to bet all two of my dollars on Ramsay Solution.
My Saturday Picks for Monmouth Park
Race eleven — Eatontown Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $150,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles run on the turf course for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I like the 3/1 morning-line favorite, Fluffy Socks, with top jockey Manny Franco aboard.

This bay four-year-old has finished eleven of her 13 career starts in the money, winning four. Her wins include the Jimmy Durante Stakes (Grade III) at Del Mar in 2020, and the Sands Point Stakes (Grade II) at Belmont Park last October.

Notably, Fluffy Socks finished a tight second in a field of nine in the Modesty Stakes (Grade III) at Churchill Downs in May.

Horse racing veteran Chad C. Brown trains Fluffy Socks for owner-breeder Head of Plains Partners LLC.
      Race twelve — Pegasus Stakes

This is a $150,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles run on the dirt track for three-year-olds. The top two finishers in this race get entry and start fees waived in the Haskell Stakes on July 23.

I’m backing the third-favored (at 7/2) Dash Attack, ridden by newcomer Samuel Marin.

This chestnut colt has already firmly established himself among the top earners of 2022. He moneyed three of his six career starts, winning three. Those wins were his initial maiden attempt in December at Oaklawn Park, the Smarty Jones Stakes (Listed) at Oaklawn in January, and the Long Branch Stakes (Black Type) here at Monmouth just last month.

He was an also-ran in his other three races—all preps for the 2022 Kentucky Derby (Lexington Stakes, Rebel Stakes, and Southwest Stakes).

Kenneth G. McPeek trains Dash Attack for owners Catalyst Stable, Magdalena Racing, Kevin J. Pollard, and Patty Slevin.
Race thirteen — Monmouth Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $150,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles run on the grass course for three-year-olds and upward. My money’s on the third-favored 5/1 underdog Yes This Time, piloted by top jockey Paco Lopez.

This four-year-old chestnut colt moneyed nine of his 13 career starts, winning six—which gives him better stats than his competitors in this 12-horse field.
Yes This Time’s wins include the English Channel Stakes (Black Type) at Gulfstream Park in May of 2021, and the Kent Stakes (Grade III) at Delaware Park last July. He’s posted triple-digit speed figures for four of his last five races.

Thirty-year horse racing veteran Kelly J. Breen trains Yes This Time for Edge Racing.
Race fourteen — Salvator Mile Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $150,000 purse, one-mile run on the dirt track for three-year-olds and upward. The winning horse in this race gets entry and start fees waived for the Monmouth Cup on July 23. I’m betting on the 6/1 sleeper, Shirl’s Speight, with veteran jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson in the irons.

This five-year-old bay finished in the money six of his ten career starts, winning five. More importantly, his 2022 record refines those stats: three wins in four starts.

It almost seems like Shirl’s Speight got all of his losing out of the way early on, doesn’t it.

Those three wins include the Tampa Bay Stakes (Grade III) in February and the Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes (Grade I) at Keeneland in April.

Horse racing Hall of Fame inductee (2012) Roger L. Attfield trains Shirl’s Speight for owner-breeder Charles E. Fipke.
Saturday Horse Racing Picks for Santa Anita Park
Race three — Fasig-Tipton Debutante Stakes

This is a $100,000 purse, five-furlong dirt track run for two-year-old fillies. Yeah, I’m going to agree with the morning line here and bet the 6/5 favorite, Tom’s Regret, ridden by veteran jockey Tyler Baze.

This bay filly has the best record in this seven-horse field, with two money finishes in two career starts—both of them wins.

Besides her initial maiden attempt in April, Tom’s Regret also aced the Kentucky Juvenile Stakes (Black Type) in April.

Forty-year horse racing veteran Jorge Periban trains Tom’s Regret for owners Cinema Thoroughbreds, Michelle K. Beckerle, Saul Carrillo, Victor M. Flores, Burton Johnson, and Eugene Zondlo.

There’s also a good investment opportunity in a value show ticket on the 30/1 longshot Paddle On Polly, ridden by Emily A. Ellingwood.

Trained by co-owner Lisa Bernard for herself, Chris Fosselman, and Michael John Ryan, Paddle On Polly won her second maiden attempt just last month.
Race seven — Santa Maria Stakes (Grade II)

This is a $200,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles dirt track run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m betting the 5/2 underdog, Blue Stripe, with Tyler Baze in the irons.

This five-year-old Argentinian export has a better record than the rest of this six-horse field: Seven money finishes in eight career starts, five of them wins.
She made a name for herself in Argentina with wins in the Cl

Rocket Picks : Belmont Park, Churchill Downs, and Santa Anita for June 18, 2022
                          By: Aaron Halterman

It’s time for another great Saturday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Belmont Park for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Churchill Downs and Santa Anita for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s go!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Belmont Park:

                          Belmont Park June 18, 2022

                          Race 7: Allowance Optional Claiming

#3 Fighter in the Win makes his debut in the United States in this spot for Chad Brown, who has been winning in bunches with these types of runners. He has won two of his last three starts coming into this race. #4 Merci was a solid fourth against similar horses last time out at Keeneland. That type of effort will give him a big shot today.

                          Race 8: Maiden Claiming

#2 Prince James drops down to the claiming ranks today after several losses at the allowance level. Atras comes into this race hot right now, which is a good sign. Atras also enters #6 Air Attack, while Joel Rosario will be aboard for the ride. He was a solid second last time out in a Starter Stakes at Aqueduct.

                          Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#5 Mr. Kringle was second last time out at this class level going one mile, defeated by only a length. He should be right in the mix once again today. #3 Uncle George makes his third start off of the layoff today, which could produce a solid effort. He also should like this slight stretch out in distance.

                          Race 10: Maiden Claiming

#1 Forwardly was a solid third last time out at Monmouth Park, which was his first start after a long layoff. He should run an improved race today. #6 Acamar was decent in his turf debut last time out, while today he gets a stretch out in distance. That should help his chances.

                              #15
The Jury: Bets and fades for June 18
                              TwinSpires Staff

                              What is your best bet?

James Scully: #7 Safe Conduct will bring speed to Saturday's Monmouth (G3), comfortably leading wire-to-wire over a nice allowance field at Belmont Park last out, and the 12-horse field lacks confirmed frontrunners. I will play him right back in this spot. Winner of the Queen's Plate last August, Safe Conduct did not make a serious impact in his next four stakes attempts, but he appears to have turned things around for Phil Serpe. Jose Lezcano sticks with the four-year-old, and Safe Conduct is listed at 15-1 on the morning line.

Kellie Reilly: Although I have a few ideas for Royal Ascot on Saturday, the action across the pond is too tough to qualify for a best bet. The Eatontown (G3) at Monmouth is also competitive, but #6 Princess Grace (7-2) has a lot of appeal in her seasonal reappearance. The comeback winner of the Dr. James Penny Memorial (G3) off a similar layoff last season, the Michael Stidham mare rallied for third to Regal Glory in her 2021 finale in the Matriarch (G1). She had no chance from a poor position that day, but will get a better trip with Florent Geroux, who's 2-for-2 with her.

Vance Hanson: #8 Curly Ruth (7-2) appears one of the classier fillies and mares entered in the $75,000 Romacaca S. over 1 1/16 miles on the turf at Hawthorne. Although she's disappointed in all three prior stakes attempts, note she does have four allowance wins to her credit, including an upset score over multiple graded stakes winner Fluffy Socks at Keeneland two back. She faded to seventh in the Modesty (G3) at Churchill Downs last time, but a lot of horses weren't handling that surface early in the meet and it was generally unfavorable to horses racing on or near the pace. This looks like an ideal spot to beef up her stakes resume.

Who is the horse to fade?

JS: In Saturday's 10th race at Churchill Downs, a stakes-quality allowance for three-year-old fillies, #9 Tarabi will make her first start since a non-threatening third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Her lone win came at Ellis last August, and the stalker has lost ground in the stretch of her last two outings. Facing a couple quality rivals, Tarabi looks vulnerable as the 8-5 morning line choice.

KR: #3 Blue Stripe (5-2) could be vulnerable on the slight cutback in Saturday's Santa Maria (G2) at Santa Anita. The Argentine import needed every yard of 1 1/8 miles to get up in the Santa Margarita (G2), and she'll have to catch a few sharper rivals going 1 1/16 miles here. Her half-sister, 2019 Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) winner Blue Prize, was similarly more effective over further.

VH: The aforementioned #8 Fluffy Socks (3-1) is the morning line favorite in a competitive renewal of the Eatontown (G3) at Monmouth Park, but it was that loss to the unheralded Curly Ruth, plus a recent tendency to settle for minor awards, that gives us cause for pause at a relatively short price. She's facing a good field that includes four-time graded winner Princess Grace and 2021 Eatontown winner Vigilantes Way, both highly capable sorts. Although scorching in divisional graded stakes across the country this year, the Brown barn has also been rather cold with its ship-ins to Monmouth so far this meet.

                              What else is worth noting?

JS: Interesting to see #4 Shirl's Speight switch from turf to dirt in Saturday's $150,000 Salvator Mile (G3) at Monmouth Park. Winner of the Maker's Mark Mile (G1) and Tampa Bay (G3) earlier this season, the five-year-old's three-race turf win streak came to an end with a fourth in the Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic (G1), which produced the top two finishers in last Saturday's Manhattan (G1) at Belmont Park, but one can easily excuse that performance. Shirl's Speight faces a tough task against Hot Rod Charlie, but he appears to be training forwardly over the Woodbine dirt training track and Roger Attfield must believe Shirl's Speight will have more to offer switching surfaces.

KS: Justify's first winner, #9 Tahoma (5-2), makes his stakes debut in the Fasig-Tipton Futurity Saturday at Santa Anita. The 2018 Triple Crown champ is already emerging as a freshman sire to follow. He nearly had a major chance at Royal Ascot with Aidan O'Brien's smashing first-out winner Statuette, but she ended up skipping Friday's Albany (G3). Thus Tahoma will try to become Justify's first stakes winner as well. The Doug O'Neill juvenile keeps Juan Hernandez aboard as he aims to beat the morning line favorite, stablemate #3 Absolutely Zero (8-5).

VH: The final Group offering of the Royal Ascot meet is the Platinum Jubilee (G1), a six-furlong dash that should prove quite the spectacle with 27 horses charging down the Heath. Perhaps this will be the right time to re-visit #16 Minzaal (12-1), who was arguably still a touch short when we endorsed him in the British Champions Sprint (G1) last fall, in which he finished two lengths third. A year-long layoff from the fall of his juvenile year to last October has forced him to play catch-up, but presumably hasn't hindered the potential he still possesses. This is a mighty task, but he should come on some from his season-opening third in the Duke of York (G2).
