Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, July 15, 2022
                by Al Cimaglia

Tonight, Hoosier Park has a 14-race card scheduled featuring Indiana Sires Stakes action. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                Race 11

1-Woodside Genuis (4/5)-Worthy of being the program chalk but not feeling the 4/5 morning line. Will use and respect chances but look to others for some value.
2-Temple City (20-1)-Trotted the back half in 58.2 and might be better tonight facing this crew. This will be 3rd career start and Shetler could be more aggressive here.
4-Jesmach On Target (9/2)-Finished a distant 3rd in last but the two ahead are not in this field. Should have a better chance to improve versus this group.

                Race 12

7-Rockinstorm (3-1)-Won here in a quick mile on 7-4 with a sharp effort. Was supposed to be in on 7-8 but was a sick scratch. Comes back versus the same kind as the last win and will be looking for its 4th straight picture.
8-Beaumond Hanover (9/2)-Cullipher trainee has been close but now draws outside. There is some gate speed in this race so the fractions should be lively. Looking for Macomber to be in striking range turning for the wire.

                Race 13

4-Mac's Big Boy (3-1)-Beaten 3/5 chalk gets post relief and Tetrick should have this George pupil racing near the top of the stack. Draws inside of the top 2 (#5-#6) in a tough race.
6-My House (5/2)-Sizzled the 2nd half in 52.4 to take top honors last week. Looking for an even better effort as returns in 6 days rather than 2 weeks.

                Race 14

4-T'S Raiders II (9/2)-Ships back from Hawthorne and lands in a good spot. Looks like a square price and fits well with this crew. Tetrick should have the 4-year-old in play and does compete at HoP (30-7-6-4).
8-Truffle Dog (8-1)-Simply put, needs a good steer from Macomber. Has big gate speed but not sure getting the top in .26 seconds is a recipe for success. The price should be right and looks like a player with a favorable journey.

                0.50 Late Pick 4

                1,2,4/7,8/4,6/4,8
                Total Bet=$12

Jeff Siegel: What You Need to Know - Saratoga | Friday, July 15, 2022

                  by Jeff Siegel

                  SARATOGA BEST PLAYS:

THIRD RACE – Post: 2:15 PT
                  3-Whistler’s Honor (9/2)
It difficult to gauge how much of a threat this colt could have been in a similar affair at Belmont Park in his second career start in late May. For certain, he had no chance to display any type of late kick after being hopelessly blocked behind a wall of horses from the furlong pole to the wire. The son of Tonalist was locked and loaded but was never persevered with when the case became hopeless; so it would be nice today to find out just what he’s capable of. At 9/2 on the morning line and with J. Ortiz staying aboard, the J. Abreu-trained sophomore deserves another chance in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

                  NINTH RACE: Post: 5:39 PT
                  3-Mira Mission (7/2)
Classy gelding has plenty in his favor in this year’s edition of the Forbidden Apple S.-G3. Freshened since the spring after missing by a neck in the Turf Classic S.-G1 on Derby Day in Kentucky, the son of Noble Mission has trained steadily in recent weeks to be plenty fit and projects to enjoy an ideal second-flight, ground-saving trip and then have every chance to seal the deal when the pressure is turned on. A winner of five of 12 career starts, including a clever score over the local lawn last year, the I. Wilkes-trained gelding has earned triple digit Beyer speed figures in his last three starts and retains regular pilot J. Leparoux. There is wagering value to be found at or near his morning line of 7/2.

                  THIRD RACE:

Your Mission (July 8, Saratoga, 4f, :49.3b TT du). Grade: B-
Inside City Fever (same time) around dogs over the training track turf course for T. Pletcher, light coaxing (workmate ridden), okay work while clearly best and galloping out well to the clubhouse turn and into the backstretch. Seems to be coming back well enough as a first-time gelding and should fit with maiden state-bred competition over a distance of ground on grass.

                  Lady Scarlet (July 9, Saratoga, 4f, :47.4b). Grade: B
Never really asked in sharp half mile breeze for M. Maker, final quarter mile in :24.2 over the Saratoga main track. Was impressive winning the Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico last time out and holds that form.

Set Piece (July 9, Saratoga, 4f, :48.4b, TT). Grade: B-
In blinkers in solo training track drill, seemed a bit unfocused into and through the lane but otherwise was fine in steady drill without being asked. Has never really been much in the morning but appears to be holding his edge.

                    Saratoga Picks - Friday, July 15, 2022

                    Race 1: 6-3-5-1

                    Race 9: 6-1-8-10
                    Race 10: 7-9-3-2
**Most Likely: Gooch Go Bragh #2 (Race 5)**
**Best Value: Mystic Eyes #10 (Race 8)**

Most Likely Winner: (Race 5: Gooch Go Bragh #2, 6/1):

The Danny Gargan Show rolls into Saratoga, and he has a solid group of runners headed your way, bettors. I am predicting that he is going to have a superb Meet. Here is a talented 3-yr-old by Distorted Humor should not be 6/1 when this race goes off. The former member of Todd Pletcher’s outfit came to Gargan in January, and after a couple of tough races down at Gulfstream, he shipped to Belmont. That Starter race did not go well … didn’t like the surface? Now, coming back to Saratoga (a place he ran nicely as a 2-yr-old), he should handle a group like this one. The addition of Irad Ortiz … well … you know what that means …

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #2

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 8: Mystic Eyes #10, 15/1):

On this Friday, I am most-intrigued how this filly by Maclean’s Music will run-back after a disappointing start at Churchill Downs in mid-May. That “Non-G” pitted the Pletcher sprinter against Twilight Gleaming #3, but the rematch probably is not on anyone’s radar. I think differently … She is making only her 2nd start of the year, and obviously she needed a race. Now, with a handful of works under her saddle, she should be at a much higher level of fitness. I am always a big fan of Luis Saez, and his job is simple … break well … get to the lead … and maybe with some luck, his mount will have that late turn-of-foot! One can hope … 15/1? Not sure …

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 9: Turf, 1 Mile, Forbidden Apple S. (G3), $175k, 4+):

The Forbidden Apple is probably worth a bite, but beware, this is a very tough field with loads of options. Nothing like sinking your teeth into this juicy prize, though! When it comes to a “deserving favorite,” you might think that Brad Cox’s venerable Set Piece #1 is worth consideration … and you would be right. The 6-yr-old Juddmonte homebred appeared to win easily last time out in the Dinner Party S. (G2) at Pimlico. I am not sure how tough that race really was for him, and that makes me question whether or not Cox has him ready for a race like this one. With such a large field, it is an easy decision … look elsewhere for value. My top selection is one-half of the Chad Brown uncoupled entry … Analyze It #6. This 7-yr-old still has solid rating ability, and he is just starting his ’22 campaign. Even though he lost to Kentucky Ghost at Monmouth in a “Non-G,” he has the resume to get the job done here with Jose Ortiz in the irons. Brown has never won this apple, but he has a shot to do so today. It’s going to be a question of timing for Ortiz. If he can get his ride in position just off-the-lead, then he has a major chance to notch the victory. Let’s come up with a bet that is going to take a stand against Cox’s aged ace. Here it is …

                    Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Wheel, 6 w 1 w 2/3/4/5/7/8/9/10/11/12

Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks July 15

                      by Joseph Aiello

In Spa Selections, Saratoga on-site correspondent Joseph Aiello provides Saratoga picks for a handful of key races at Saratoga, including all of the exciting stakes action!

Race 8 – Coronation Cup Stakes

                      1. #3 Twilight Gleaming (2-1) – Certainly has her work cut out for her with plenty of others who want to press the lead, but these Wesley Ward fillies have been tough to pass up here

                      2. #6 Derrynane (5-1) – Maybe not the best form of these, but with Rosario in the irons and a likely hot pace to close into, could be one to get a good run at them late

                      3. #11 Empress Tigress (6-1) – Too sharp in her debut to pass up, will switch to turf from artificial and could get the right stalking trip here to be a factor

                      4. #1 Marissa’s Lady (8-1) – This filly and Artos are two that offer good value to be used to round out supers, with this one showing some good speed and dropping from a grade II

Race 9 – Grade III Forbidden Apple Stakes

                      1. #1 Set Piece (3-1) – Should be deserving favorite, but will have to navigate from the rail and through a decent sized field so not one to be singled on top

                      2. #8 Atone (6-1) – Goes back to his preferred mile distance, with some versatility to either take the early lead or come from mid pack if the pace appears too harsh

                      3. #7 Public Sector (6-1) – Will likely get bet down a bit more due to his spotless record at Saratoga and being a Chad Brown trainee, but should still be decent value here

                      4. #3 Mira Mission (7-2) – Some stronger recent speed figures after jumping into graded stakes company, and good consistency that should put this one in the mix

                      Race 10 – OC 45000n2x

                      1. #7 Thinking It Over (5-1) – This is probably the best distance for her, and she has put in her two best performances in back to back races

                      2. #3 Khali Magic (7-2) – Almost always involved with the leaders late, but has had winning troubles at this class, still one of the more competitive of this field

                      3. #2 Rossa Veloce (3-1) – Didn’t have her easiest of trips last time, but has some races that would be good enough to beat these, and seems due for a bounce back effort

                      4. #1 Pretty Clever (6-1) – Has hit the board in her last five, usually finishing well even if behind, and should be more involved with the pace as she keeps Carmouche in the irons

                        #12
                        Friday’s Saratoga picks – July 15

The 2022 Saratoga Race Course meeting flashed from the gate Thursday and rolls ahead Friday with a 10-race card topped by a pair of stakes on the grass.

The Grade 3 Forbidden Apple and Coronation Cup await horseplayers, along with the usual mix of maiden, claiming and allowance events on the dirt and turf for Day 2 of the 40-day stand. The featured $175,000 Forbidden Apple attracted a strong cast led by multiple graded stakes winner Set Piece, Grade 1 Old Forester Turf Classic runner-up Mira Mission, City Man, Atone, Get Smoking and others.

The Saratoga Special handicappers produced spotty results on Opening Day, with perennial leader John Shapazian picking six winners on the 10-race card to top the group. Shapazian picked High Tide in the third, Majority Partner in the fifth, Tarabi in the Wilton Stakes, Canisy in the eighth and Just Cindy in the Grade 3 Schuylerville.

Here are the picks for Friday, July 15. Be safe and good luck.

Rocket Picks : Gulfstream Park, Monmouth Park, and Saratoga for July 15, 2022
                          By: Aaron Halterman

The action rolls on today as we approach another great weekend! For the free pick 4, we will head to Saratoga for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Gulfstream Park and Monmouth Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Saratoga:

                          Saratoga July 15, 2022

                          Race 7: Claiming

#2 Jades Dream should like the distance of todays race, while he won his last start over the dirt against allowance runners. #3 Six Percent will take a significant drop down in class for this race, which is probably where he belongs. He also gets Jose Ortiz aboard for the third straight race.

                          Race 8: Coronation Cup Stakes
                          freestar

#3 Twilight Gleaming is the class of this field after winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile Sprint last season. However, she has not been quite as flashy so far this season. #11 Empress Tigress was ultra impressive in her debut race at Woodbine over the synthetic surface. She looks ready to try stakes company.

Race 9: Forbidden Apple Stakes (G3)

#1 Set Piece was an impressive winner at Pimlico in his last start, while last year he nearly won the Fourstardave over this track. He should be set up for a nice performance today. #7 Public Sector should get a solid pace set up today, while we should see his best effort today with this being his third start off of the layoff.

                          Race 10: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Rossa Veloce runs second off of the claim today for Morey, which should lead to an improved race, while Prat jumps aboard. He also gets back to running against state bred horses as well. #3 Khali Magic has been a consistent runner on this circuit and at this level in her last several starts.

                          THE TICKET

The summer racing season continues on this weekend and the action gets underway at Busan on Friday with 7 races from 15:35 to 21:00. Here are the previews:

                              Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

A maiden to kick things off and it’s wide open. (3) UNJU STAR has as good a chance as any following a decent 2nd place at this distance on June 19th when close to the pace throughout. That’s not the first time he has hinted at having some ability and he also has the fastest time among these at the distance. (2) PURE MAGIC has a 5th and a 2nd from two starts so far. He draws nicely and will be expected to lead here and be in the mix a long way. (10) TRIPLE THUNDER has mixed his form a little across five starts so far and we’ll draw a line through his latest and instead go on his good 2nd at this distance in May. He has a strong finish so the wide draw may not be too inconvenient. (11) LET IT GO and (9) POLE TO WIN are among others who can be competitive.
Selections (3) Unju Star (2) Pure Magic (10) Triple Thunder (11) Let It Go
                              Next Best 9, 1
                              Fast Start 1, 2, 9, 11

                              Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Another competitive maiden. (4) MILK DAY has put in some consistent performances recently and looks to be working up towards a win. He likes to sit back in his races and then run on and he shapes as the one to beat here. (11) BOUNTY HUNTER came very close to getting his maiden win on his latest start on July 1st when leading for a long time only to get overhauled on the line. That gives him another crack at this level and under a relatively light weight again, he looks a place chance. (7) S. L. KING has actually won a race but because it was back when racing was being run for vastly reduced prize money, he is still at class 6. That win was over a mile all the way back in April of 2021 and he hasn’t raced since. He looked very well in a trial in June and in this company can go well first-up. (8) SORI TAEPUNG and (3) AGAIN HELEN others in the frame.
                              Selections (4) Milk Day (11) Bounty Hunter (7) S. L. King (8) Sori Taepung

Having secured his maiden win over 1000M last October, (3) JEONGMUN DRAGON was out of action until June 17th. He returned very handily though, with a front-running 2nd over this distance. He comes up in the weights today but should have come on for that run and from a good draw can be on pace and is very much the one to beat. (5) GLOBAL CHOEGO comes back in trip following recent good work at further. He got his maiden win three starts back over 1300M before finishing 4th and 3rd in two goes at 1400M. He has a runner-up finish to his name at this distance too and he looks to be the main danger. (1) JUMAL BOBAE has only missed the top three on one of six starts so far. That was his latest at 1300M but he comes in here after three months out and from a good draw can go close. (6) UNJU OCEAN and (8) BABEL PHOENIX are other placing chances.
Selections (3) Jeongmun Dragon (5) Global Choego (1) Jumal Bobae (6) Unju Ocean

                              Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                              (3) EUNSEONG YEONGUNG comes in having won his latest two in good fashion, the most recent at this class and distance on June 17th. He comes up significantly in the weights here although that is balanced a little by a good draw and he has every chance of making it three in a row. Also looking for three in a row is (10) HAENGBOKAN HAMAN. She is up rapidly in class after consecutive victories over 1300M. She carries a light weight and can measure up at this level. (6) BEASTLY is two starts into a comeback following almost a year on the sidelines. Those two outings have yielded a 4th and a 3rd, the latter at this distance and he could well be peaking today. (5) NAMED is up in class after a good win over 1300M on June 12th. He carries a light weight and draws well and should be competitive. (2) SEOGWI POINT among others to consider.
Selections (3) Eunseong Yeongung (10) Haengbokan Haman (6) Beastly (5) Named

                              Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Another big and competitive field. (8) SAEROUN HAMAN gets the nod based on his 2nd place last time out on June 17th when he settled back and ran on but couldn’t quite get to the winner. He was favourite that day and probably will be again here and this time he should go one better. (5) UNJU BULPAE is the logical second-pick. He ran on well for 2nd behind Man Of The Star over 1400M on June 19th and while he comes up in trip to a mile for the first time, it should suit and he can go close. (1) DAMYANG DOLPUNG ran on well for 3rd at class and distance on June 24th. He does come up 2kg today but draws nicely in the inside and can be competitive. (11) ACE FOUR TEN and (6) GRAND CHUKJE among a number of others with at least placing claims.
Selections (8) Saeroun Haman (5) Unju Bulpae (1) Damyang Dolpung (11) Ace Four Ten

                              Busan Race 6: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

                              (8) I WILL BE FREE is a winner of two from five and is yet to finish worse than 5th. He comes up in class following his second victory which came at this distance on June 17th when he sat behind the leader early before taking things up heading to the straight and running on to score by five-lengths. This is harder but the manner of that victory suggests there is more to come and he’s the one to beat here. (9) GEUMA GOOD POINT is also up in class following a good on pace win over a mile on June 24th. He comes down in the weights and should have enough early speed to get on pace again and be in this a long way. (2) ROYAL PENNANT returns to action for the first time since May 2021. He was working his way towards a win before the layoff but returns here, gelded, and having looked quick when trialing. He carries next to no weight and could be interesting first-up. (6) WARRIOR CLASS and (1) K CHUKJE are others in the frame.
Selections (8) I Will Be Free (9) Geuma Good Point (2) Royal Pennant (6) Warrior Class

All but one of this small field raced one another at class and distance on June 17th. From a much better draw, (1) COOL GUY, who was a narrow 2nd in that race, can go one better here. He comes up in weight but still meets that day’s winner 1kg better off and he will be the favourite. That winner was (2) BLUE POWER, who got the better of Cool Guy by a neck. He rarely misses out on a cheque and while he is up 3kg in the weights, he can be dangerous again. Those two were eight-lengths clear of the rest on June 17th. (6) B.K JOHN was 3rd in the race continuing a very consistent run of form that has seen him no worse than 4th in seven class 2 outings. He can push for a place again. The intriguing one is (4) BULMYEORUI GIL. He has the same owner and trainer as Blue Power and also ran out a winner on June 17th. That was over 1800M at class level. He qualifies for class 3 so this is perhaps a shy at the stumps but he may well appreciate the extended trip. (3) DOCTOR TAKE another in the hunt.
