Monday MLB Free play. My selection is on Atlanta over Philadelphia at 7:05 pm et on Monday.
This game features a starting pitching mismatch as the Braves send Max Fried to the hill against Ranger Suarez of the Phillies on Monday in Philadelphia.
Atlanta got blasted by the Angels 9-1 in yesterday’s series finale, failing to complete the series sweep in the process. Here, I’m confident we’ll see the Braves bounce back behind Fried who has recorded a terrific 2.57 FIP and 1.06 WHIP while allowing only 2.72 runs per nine innings this season. Fried catches the Phillies slumping at the plate and I don’t see this as a favourable bounce-back spot for the home side.
Ranger Suarez has made just one start for the Phillies this month and it was a good one as he tossed five shutout innings on July 16th in Miami. With that being said, he’s struggled for the most part this season, posting a 4.11 FIP and 1.42 WHIP, yielding 4.5 runs per nine innings. As I’ve noted on multiple occasions this season, the Braves have owned left-handed starting pitching this season. Prior to yesterday’s setback they had gone 24-9 against southpaw starters this season, averaging 5.7 runs per game along the way.
The Braves should own the later innings in this game as well. That’s because the Phillies bullpen has been a disaster lately, recording a collective 5.61 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over the last seven games. The Braves ‘pen entered yesterday’s action sporting a 3.74 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over the same stretch and has converted 17 saves while blowing only four on the road this season. Take Atlanta.

The Boston Red Sox are 1-9 in their last 10 games overall while scoring just 2.9 runs per game in the process. They are without their two best hitters in Rafael Devers and Trevor Story, who are both on the IL, and they may not have J.D. Martinez again tonight either.
Zach Plesac should be able to shut down the short-handed Red Sox. He has been solid this season with a 3.93 ERA and 1.255 WHIP in 17 starts for the Cleveland Guardians. Plesac has held the Red Sox to 3 earned runs or fewer in all three career starts against them. The Guardians are 3-0 in those three starts.
Nick Pivetta is going through his worst stretch of the season right now for Boston. He is 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA and 2.251 WHIP in his last three starts, allowing a whopping 20 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings. He needs to be near-perfect for the Red Sox to have a chance tonight, and I wouldn't bank on it with the way he has been going. Bet the Guardians Monday.

The Tigers (+153) are worth a look as a decently priced home dog against the Padres in Monday's MLB action. Really like the value here with Detroit. San Diego could be a little flat here traveling from New York to Detroit after yesterday's loss to the Mets. Padres are also getting way too much respect here with Sean Manaea on the mound. Manaea is just 5-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 17 starts. He's got a 5.17 ERA and 1.724 WHIP in his last 3 starts. Play the Tigers +153!

This is a play on the BOSTON RED SOX for our Monday Free Play. Cleveland won three straight games heading into the All Star break and then won the first two games against the White Sox but lost the final two games of the series over the weekend. Coupled with the Twins two wins over Detroit on Saturday and Sunday, the Guardians are three games behind Minnesota in the American League Central and remain on the road where they are 23-27. Pitching has let them down on the road mostly but Zach Plesac looks to turn that around he has been on a solid run, allowing three runs or less in his last six starts. Four have come on the road but Cleveland is just 1-3 in those games as the Guardians have scored exactly four runs in those games. Many saw this coming for Boston as its early schedule consisted of mostly non-divisional games and at one point a month ago, they were to play 29 of 36 games against the American League East and it has not gone well. July 4 started a stretch of 17 straight divisional games and the Red Sox went 4-13 to drop to .500 on the season and their overall record against the East is 12-29. They finally get a break for the next couple weeks and will try and get out of this rut and get back over .500 at home. Nick Pivetta has gotten torched over his last three starts so the extended time off could not have come at a better time. All three were divisional games though and prior to this stretch, he posted a 1.00 ERA in his previous five home outings. Here, we play against American League teams when the money line is +125 to -125 starting a pitcher who walked one or fewer hitters each of his last two outings going up against an opponent starting a pitcher who allowed seven or more runs last outing. This situation is 27-8 (77.1 percent) over the last five seasons. Play (966) Boston Red Sox

My free play is on the Bos Red Sox at 7:10 ET.
Cleveland began a new era in 2022 (no longer the Indians, now the Guardians). Cleveland lost to the Cubs in the 2016 World Series (led 3-1, before losing the final three games) and followed with THREE more postseason appearances in the next four years (exception was in 2019 when the team won 93 games). However, Cleveland would go just 80-82 in 2021. The Red Sox have won four World Series titles since 2004 but Boston struggled to a 24-36 record in the 2020 season, before surprising most by going 92-70 in 2021. The Red Sox made it to the ALCS but lost 4-2 to the Astros. The two teams begin a four-game series Monday night at Fenway with Cleveland coming in 48-46 and Boston 48-48. The Guardians are three games behind the Twins in the AL Central and also three games behind the final wild card spot in the AL. The Red Sox are in a 'free fall,' having lost NINE of 10 and 17 of 23 since sitting 11 games over .500 (42-31) back on June 26.
Zach Plesac (2-7, 4.02 ERA) will take the mound for Cleveland, while Boston will start Nick Pivetta (8-7, 4.50 ERA). Plesac is NOT having a good season, with Cleveland going 7-10 in his starts. His road ERA of 4.93 is almost TWO runs higher than it is at home (3.02). Pivetta was acquired (along with prospect Connor Seabold) from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 in exchange for pitchers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree. His 2022 season started off as a disaster, as he was 0-4 with a 6.08 ERA after six starts (team was 0-6) but he then earned a decision in each of his next NINE starts, going 8-1 with a 1.96 ERA. However, Pivetta has struggled mightily in three July starts, allowing 20 ERs on 23 hits over just 13.1 innings (13.50 ERA).
All of the above noted, I just don't see Boston continuing to lose and will note that the Red Sox swept a three-game series at Cleveland from June 24-26. Boston is worth a shot as a small play.
