Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks July 28
    Joseph Aiello

    Race 5 – Birdstone Stakes

    1. #2 Lone Rock (6-5) – Looks a tad below Fearless right now, but ran extremely well here last year and might be better with the added two furlongs

    2. #1 Fearless (4-5) – Is the classiest here and has been the best as of late, but will need to prove he can win at this distance although the running style looks good for this race

    3. #3 Original Intent (12-1) – This seven year old gelding takes a big step up here, but has won twice at the distance and gets Joel Rosario who should have him closing late

    4. #4 Portos (8-1) – This doesn’t seem like a winner here, but with solid class he should be somewhere in the mix

    Race 7 – Alw 115000n1x

    1. #3 Ring of Fire (7-2) – Two solid races in a row and keeps Luis Saez who has won at a 33% clip for Rudy Rodriguez in the past year

    2. #8 Boston Tea Party (5-2) – This colt by American Pharoah will likely be favorite on a class drop after fading against Annapolis, but cuts back to a more preferred distance

    3. #5 Legends Can’t Die (7-2) – Loses Saez but broke his maiden as the favorite first time out with a strong stretch run and fast final fractions

    4. #6 Thin White Duke (6-1) – Finished second in both tries at the Spa two years ago, and finally cuts back to this distance where he is a threat to go gate to wire

    Race 8 – Alw 95000n1x

    1. #4 Price Discipline (4-5) – This Klaravich colt looks like the best in here, as Prat and Chad Brown’s drought together continues, this should give them another good winning chance

    2. #1 Dangerous Edge (4-1) – A winner of his last two who looks to be in top form, this gelding keeps Manny Franco in the irons who has won at a nice clip together with Rob Atras

    3. #8 Rhymes Like Dimes (20-1) – A longer shot coming out of cheaper races, but a solid win last time out where he stalked a fair pace off a layoff and another good jockey trainer combo

    4. #6 Great Workout (5-1) – Had some pace to close into in a claiming win last time, and got a good speed figure in that try that makes him competitive with this field

    Race 9 – OC 62500n2x

    1. #7 McLovin (6-1) – Has a win at this distance and ran well his last two off a layoff, plus keeps Rosario who has been riding as good as any on the turf

    2. #5 Balthus (2-1) – His last two are good enough to beat the others here, with his last race effort the best of this group at this distance but will need to sit off a slow pace

    3. #3 Mud Pie (6-1) – First time gelding who is eight for nine in the money lifetime on the turf, and has some competitive races at longer distances so should be a factor here

    4. #2 Cold Hard Cash (6-1) – Linda Rice trainee has been consistent and ran very well here in three tries last year, plus stretches out to a longer distance that he should be well suited for

Rocket Picks : Del Mar and Saratoga for July 28, 2022
                By: Aaron Halterman

It’s another big weekend of racing so lets day HOT! Last week couldn’t have been any better. For the free pick 4, we will head back to Saratoga for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Del Mar for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Saratoga:

                Saratoga July 28, 2022

                Race 7: Allowance

#3 Ring of Fire will try allowance company again today after running second at Belmont Park last time out. This is also his second start for Rudy Rodriguez. #8 Boston Tea Party drops down to the allowance ranks after running fifth against stakes company last time out at Belmont Park.

                Race 8: Allowance
                freestar

#4 Price Discipline looks like a clear standout in this spot today after two solid starts so far. Look for him to win at this level after a narrow defeat last time out at Belmont. #5 Forty Two Ace gets back to the dirt today, which looks to be his best surface. This is also his second race off of the layoff.

                Race 9: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Cold Hard Cash runs second off of the layoff today after running third at this level last time out at Belmont Park. Look for this horse to try to take this field gate to wire. #5 Balthus goes for three straight wins in this spot after two impressive wins over the turf at Belmont Park.

                Race 10: Claiming

#11 Sandrone takes a big drop in class for this one after a couple of poor efforts against allowance runners. #2 Cousin Andrew also will drop down in class for this race today after a poor effort last time out. Two starts back he was second at a higher level at Belmont Park.

                THE TICKET

                $.50 Pick 4 (Races 7-10) 1,3,5,6,8 / 4 / 2,3,4,5,6,7 / 2,11 – $30

                  #23
TimeformUS Saratoga Horses in Focus for Thursday, July 28, 2022

                  David Aragona

                  RACE 4: DEVIL BOY (#8)

Morning-line favorite #6 Ocean’s Reserve has returned in solid form this year, putting forth performances that would typically be enough to win at this level in each of his last two starts. However, he got a whiff of victory on both of those occasions and was turned away. He appeared to put his head in front, or at least get on even terms with his rivals in deep stretch of both of those narrow losses before settling for second. He’s a deserving favorite here, he’s again facing some rivals with talent, and it’s hard to completely trust him if he has to fight for it. I’m going in a different direction with #8 Devil Boy, who finished just behind the favorite on June 9. This 4-year-old colt has obvious talent, but possesses one major flaw – he can’t seem to get out of the starting gate. He’s broken slowly in all of his races, so it has to be assumed he’ll do so again. That said, the good news is he’s drawn an outside post position, so it’s unlikely he’ll be shuffled back after a slow start. He does his best running from off the pace anyway, and should at least be able to travel into the race outside, clear of kickback. I thought he did well to close into a moderate pace last time, and now he’s third off a 180+ day layoff for Jeremiah Englehart, who is 8 for 32 (25%, $2.73 ROI) making that move at NYRA over the past five years.

:: Get TimeformUS PPs for these races at Saratoga

                  RACE 7: EVAN SING (#1)

#8 Boston Tea Party figures to go favored here as he drops out of stakes company. He was simply no match for the talented Annapolis in the Manila, and he also may not have appreciated the stretch-out to a mile. Turning back to 5 1/2 furlongs should suit him based on how well he ran in his career debut. However, he clearly was a horse who was cranked up to win that day and he may have to produce a similar performance to beat this field. You also have to take a short price on a rider who hasn’t had much success so far at the meet. I’m not particularly fond of some others who could take money in this spot. #3 Ring of Fire is typically a short price in these races, but I think he’s meeting a tougher field than the last one one he faced at this level. Of those exiting N1X races on this circuit, I’m more interested in #6 Thin White Duke, who is turning back in distance. He had sprint success early in his career but hasn’t really been finishing off his recent route attempts. My top pick is #1 Evan Sing. I really liked the visual of this 3-year-old’s debut at Fair Grounds, which has been his only turf sprint to date. He traveled well into the race and won pretty comfortably. Since then I thought he put in a good effort second time out at Churchill and then just didn’t get the distance after chasing an honest pace last time. I like the turnback for him and he possesses the tactical speed to work out a trip from the rail.

RACE 9: TIDE OF THE SEA (#8)

I’m really not against likely favorite #5 Balthus, who just seems to be putting it all together for Chad Brown. This well-bred son of Galileo returned as a new horse this season after being gelded and adding blinkers. He’s also responded well to the gradual stretch-out in distance over his last few starts, and was quite impressive in victory going this 11-furlong trip last time. However, he was almost 6-1 that day, and now he’ll be a fraction of that price while stepping up to face a tougher field. I don’t doubt hat he’s the horse to beat, but I just didn’t feel compelled to throw more support towards him at a shorter price. I do much prefer him to the possible second choice #4 Reigning Spirit. This horse got the right trip last time in the Louisville. Though he was wide for much of his trip, he stayed out of trouble in a race where many others had to deal with traffic issues. He’s obviously better going longer, but I need some confirmation of that last-out improvement before backing him in a spot like this. I’m instead going in a different direction with #8 Tide of the Sea. It’s possible this 6-year-old’s career is simply finished, as his recent form has been pretty abysmal compared to his peak. Yet now he’s been claimed by Tom Morley for Flying P Stables, a combination that has had plenty of success, especially in this situation. Morley for these owners is 7 for 19 (37%, $4.57 ROI) first off the claim over the past five years and that doesn’t even include 45-1 winner Dynadrive, who won off a trainer switch from Mike Maker at Belmont. Tide of the Sea didn’t actually run that badly two back, and last time, little effort was made to get him involved. Now he returns as a new gelding and could play out as the controlling speed.

Best Value: Tekila #14 (MTO) (Race 6)

Most Likely Winner: (Race 5: Fearless #1, 4/5):

Todd Pletcher’s gelding by the great Ghostzapper has an apt name … Right now, he is headed in the proper direction after defeating his rival Lone Rock #2 last time out in the Brooklyn (G2) on the Belmont Stakes undercard. It seems like everything is going Repole Stables’ way, and that should continue. The HOF conditioner figured out that his charge doesn’t mind the added distances, and this runner’s maturity is really starting to shine through. The distance dirt races like this one are few and far between, but let’s face it … he is becoming a fearless one in this division.

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Win, #1

Off-the-Pace Play of the Day: (Race 6: Tekila #14, 8/1):

If this race comes off-the-turf because of the rain, I am hoping that Mark Hennig’s runner draws-in. There is much to like about this sprinter, and it starts with his class drop. I think his chances will be helped by the dean of jockeys, John Velazquez, who just keeps going. The M/L price of 8/1 suits me just fine, and Hennig has the opportunity to get his 1st win of the Meet. After 10 attempts, this filly by Liam’s Map is due for a maiden victory.

                    Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager WPS #14 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

                    Spotlight Race of the Day: (Race 8: Dirt, 1 1/8th, ALLW95kn1x, 3+):

The state breds will be taking to the Main Track on Thursday for this ALLW Co. event. This is what we call a great betting race because there are so many options. That sentiment might run contrary when you see the M/L favorite … Chad Brown’s Price Discipline #4 (4/5). The colt by Overanalyze certainly “looks” formidable, but I am not sure that he is a “shoe-in” for the victory. Routing this distance can be tricky, and even though Flavien Prat is aboard again, I do not want to just accept what is probably going to be a very short price. Instead, I am going out on a limb, and focusing my attention on Horacio De Paz’s Mr Breadwinner #7. This is one of my favorite kind of horses … one who is looking to get back to doing something that he was clearly good at … in this case, dirt racing. Now, I realize that he hasn’t officially travelled this far on the surface, but in his defense the son of Tonalist was solid on the frontend at Aqueduct going a mile in a MSW70k. Ridden by Kendrick Carmouche (his regular jockey), he should be able to build on that effort, if he can exit the gate well enough. His price will be superb (double-digits), and I like his conditioner’s numbers in situations like these. Let’s go get some bread!
