Saratoga Picks: Saturday, August 6, 2022

              Race 1: 2-5-4-7
              Race 2: 1-6-5-8
              Race 3: 7-4-2-8

              Race 10: 4-6-5-2
              Race 11: 10-4-2-7
              Race 12: 9-8-2-3
Most Likely Winner: Olympiad #4 (Race 10)
Best Value: Chi Town Lady #7 (Race 9)

              Late Pick 4 … Races 9-12

              Race 9: Dirt, 7F, Longines Test S. (G1), $500k, 3F

One of the best horizontal sequences of the whole weekend is upon us … it’s Whitney Day! Right out of the gate, we find ourselves in the middle of a race that possesses a heavy favorite. Brad Cox’s stout-looking filly, Matareya #1, is going to be a short price on Saturday because she comes to The Spa riding a 4-win-streak. Those weren’t easy contests … how many 3-yr-old fillies can you name that have a G1, G2, and G3 set to their credit? Most bettors are going to “Single” this accomplished daughter of Pioneerof the Nile, and move along. Flavien Prat gets aboard once again, and no one would be surprised if she wins the Test for Godolphin. The only aspect that gives me pause is Echo Zulu … See, Steve Asmussen’s prized BC Juvenile Filly was injured during the post parade at Belmont, and never got to run in the Acorn (G1). That left Cox’s ace to face a weaker field. Maybe her “streak” is in jeopardy because that last effort was not that special. If she is vulnerable, I am interested in a runner that likes to come from off-the-pace, who can benefit from a meltdown. Adding Wesley Ward’s Chi Town Lady #7 makes a ton of sense. The filly by Verrazano has missed on a number of occasions, but she is not without talent. The Castleton Lyons homebred gets Joel Rosario, and that qualifies as a significant upgrade. She is going to get a chance to face Matareya #1 again … I wouldn’t count her out.

              Leg 1: 1/7 (2-Deep)

              Wagering Recommendation: $2 Exacta Cold, 7 w 1

              Race 10: Dirt, 1 1/8th, The Whitney S. (G1), $1 million, 4+

The marquee event of the afternoon arrives, and even though there are others that are drawn-in for the G1 Whitney … this is about Todd Pletcher’s Life Is Good #6 versus Bill Mott’s Olympiad #4. This is the one we have all been waiting for! I am 100% impressed with Pletcher’s “LIG,” and there is no question that this son of Into Mischief has attributes in spades. Irad Ortiz rode him to victory in the Breeders’ Cup last November, and he always seems ready for action. The former Baffert runner that was injured on the Derby Trail long ago, has what I consider a major weakness … distance. I just do not believe that he can handle 1 1/8th or longer. I know he took on Knicks Go in the Pegasus WC, and won … but he is facing a horse of a different color this time around. Mott’s stellar router might be a son of Speightstown, but he has proved that he can stretch out to the great beyond. Even though he lacks a G1 win, he has built a strong resume over the past 6 months. Regular rider Junior Alvarado knows how to handle this one, and what I like is his tactical ability. Taking up a position just off a leader is his specialty, and if he can stick with Ortiz’s LIG, then he has a chance to dust him, once the top of the lane arrives. I am willing to put all my eggs in one basket, and bet this Mott colt to the hilt. This is his moment, and am supremely confident … yep, it’s a “Single” for me …

              Leg 2: 4 (Single)

              Wagering Recommendation: $25/$50 WP #4

              Race 11: Turf, 1 3/16ths, Saratoga Derby Invitational (G1), $1 million, 3

In the short history of this race, there is some evidence that European turf specialists are ripe when it comes to the prospect of victory. Trust me, I am interested in North American grass runners like Todd Pletcher’s Grand Sonata #2 and Graham Motion’s Royal Patronage #7, but let me be clear … this race is between Charlie Appleby’s Nations Pride #4 and Aidan O’Brien’s Stone Age #10. I realize that both of these colts lost to Classic Causeway #9 in the 1st leg of NYRA’s “Turf Triple,” the Belmont Derby (G1). I regarded that victory as the “perfect trip,” and I do not believe that it can be replicated. When it comes down to choosing a winner between these 2 Euro “super barns,” I am partial to O’Brien’s entry. He is going to exhibit some impressive turn-of-foot down the lane with John Velazquez aboard. The HOF rider won this race for Aidan’s son, Joseph O’Brien last year, and could repeat as champion. This is going to be a blanket finish in this Derby … what a race!

              Leg 3: 4/10 (2-Deep)

              Wagering Recommendation: $100 Bankroll, Graduated Wager, WPS #10 ($10-W, $15-P, $75-S)

              Race 12: Turf, 1 1/16th, MSW88k, 3+, NY Breds

The finale rolls into Saratoga with a group of New York breds that will be routing on the Inner Turf. When it comes to a top pick, I am pretty interested in the Bond Barn’s Biondi #9. This gelding by Sky Mesa is lightly-raced, but he already has a Spa start to his credit. Against similar company, he just missed the board on 15 July. There is a chance for improvement, and I would not bet against Luis Saez. He is one of the best when it comes to urging his mount on, deep in the stretch. If you could get 7/2 on this runner, that would qualify as an overlay. One of his rivals from that previous race is also entered, and for that reason, I want to include Todd Pletcher’s Your Mission #2. Well-bred by Noble Mission, he is another blade runner that does not have many starts to his credit. Still looking to break his maiden, it could happen late on Saturday afternoon. Last but not least … looking to strike a vein in the value department … I stumbled upon Joel Rosario’s ride, Dreampoint #8. The gelding by Point of Entry has 17 starts to his name … quite the opposite of the aforementioned pair. With 4 “Place” endings, he is still looking for that elusive score. Having a rider of this caliber in the irons can make a difference on the turf, and that is one of the many reasons why I wanted him included. With 3 very different horses in this slot, it should give us a great chance to get the ticket home! What a Whitney Day … the flowers are out!

              Leg 4: 2/8/9 (3-Deep)

Wagering Recommendation: $2 Trifecta Box, 2/8/9

              ----------------------------------------------

              Ticket: 1-7 / 4 / 4-10 / 2-8-9

              .50 Cost LP4: $6.00

Top Horse Racing Picks for Saturday, August 6, 2022

We’re already walking around lucky for my Saturday horse racing picks, because we’ve got a dozen stakes races to assess. Big purses attract faster horses, and there are a couple of million-dollar purses just waiting for our winners.

The stakes runs are split between Mountaineer Racetrack with seven tough competitions stakes-level on the race card, with another five courtesy of Saratoga Racecourse.

Rather than waste time here rubbing our hands together over our good fortune, let’s just head right down to the meat and potatoes, shall we?

One quick reminder before you move on: Be sure to check out the full race cards for both tracks at one of our best sites for horse racing betting.

                Good luck!
Saturday’s Horse Racing Picks for Mountaineer Racetrack

Mountaineer features seven stakes races on its Saturday race card, including two Grade III runs—the West Virginia Governor’s Stakes and the West Virginia Derby.
Race two — West Virginia House of Delegates Speaker’s Cup Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, one mile and 70 yards turf run for three-year-olds and upward. While the morning-line favorite, In Love, is tempting, I’m putting my two dollars on the 8/1 sleeper, Temper Tantrum, ridden by veteran jockey Christopher A. Emigh.

This four-year-old chestnut gelding finished in the money 11 of his 15 career starts, winning six. He’s won four of his eight races in the past twelve months—among them, the Richard P. Hazelton Memorial Stakes (Black Type). At Arlington.

Armando Hernandez trains Temper Tantrum for owner Antonio Donato.
Race three — West Virginia Secretary of State Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, six-furlong dirt track run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. My money’s on the second-favored (at 7/2) Command Strike, piloted by T. D. Houghton.

This five-year-old bay mare set a high standard for herself since winning her initial maiden attempt back in 2019 here at Mountaineer. For the record, Command Strike moneyed ten of her eleven career starts, winning eight. Among this ten-horse field, she has my vote for most likely.

Longtime horse racing veteran James R. Jackson trains Command Strike for owner-breeder Elkhorn Oaks, Inc.
Race four — West Virginia Legislature Chairman’s Cup Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, 4-1/2 furlong dirt track run for three-year-olds and upward.I like the 3/1 underdog in this eight-horse field—the Chilean import Storm Boarder, with veteran jockey Charle Oliveros in the irons.

This six-year-old dark bay gelding finished 21 of his 30 career starts in the money, winning 12. He’s done better this year than Hollis, the 1/1 favorite.
Hollis has started in five race this year and won two, while Storm Boarder has started in four races and won three. Advantage: Storm Boarder.

Kevin S. Patterson trains Storm boarder for owner Robert L. Cole, Jr.
Race five — West Virginia Senate President’s Cup Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse one mile and 70 yards turf run for fillies and mares three years old and upward. I’m calling this one for the 6/5 morning-line favorite, Adventuring, with top jockey Paco Lopez aboard.

Longtime Breeders’ Cup veteran Brad H. Cox trains Adventuring for owner-breeder Godolphin, LLC.

Incidentally, the 30/1 longshot, Out Ona Limb, jockeyed this race by Angel Ortega Stanley, looks to be a good value show ticket. Trained by owner Joshua R. Hay, the five-year-old chestnut mare moneyed ten of her 30 career starts—and her 2022 record is better than the morning-line’s second choice in this race.
Race six — Senator Robert C. Byrd Memorial Stakes

This is a $75,000 purse, six-furlong dirt track run for three-year-olds and upward. I agree with the morning line on this race, so my money’s on the 6/5 favorite, Special Reserve, ridden by veteran jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr.

This six-year-old ay gelding finished in the money 17 of his 24 career starts, winning eight. Among his recent wins are the 2021 Maryland Sprint Match Series Stakes (Grade III) at Pimlico and the Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes (Grade II) at Keeneland last October.
Special Reserve has posted triple-digit speed figures for seven of his last nine races. He’ll do.

Michael J. Maker trains Special Reserve for owners Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher.
Race seven — West Virginia Governor’s Stakes (Grade III)

This is a $200,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles dirt track race for three-year-olds and upward. I’m betting my two dollars on the third-favored (at 9/2) Mr. Wireless, with Deshawn L. Parker in the irons.

This four-year-old bay gelding moneyed six of his nine career starts, winning five. That includes the West Virginia Derby (Grade III) here at Mountaineer last August and the Michael G. Schaefer Memorial Stakes (Listed) at the Horseshoe Indianapolis last month.

A 25-year veteran of the thoroughbred racing business, W. Bret Calhoun trains Mr. Wireless for owners Jon Lapczenski and JIL Stable.
Race eight — West Virginia Derby (Grade III)

This is a $500,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles dirt track run for three-year-olds. I like the 3/1 underdog in this race: Home Brew, with Paco Lopez aboard.

This bay colt finished five of his six career starts in the money, winning four. That includes his two most recent races—the Oaklawn Stakes (Listed) in April and the Pegasus Stakes (Listed) at Monmouth Park in June. He’s got this.

Brad H. Cox trains Home Brew for owners Gary and Mary West.
My Saturday Horse Racing Picks for Saratoga Racecourse

Saratoga brings us a fistful of stakes races, including three Grade I matches, including the Test Stakes, the Whitney Stakes, and the Saratoga Derby Invitational.
Race five — Fasig-Tipton Lure Stakes

This is a $135,000 purse, 1-1/16 miles turf race for four-year-olds and upward that have not won a graded stakes race in 2022. While the 2/1 morning-line favorite hasn’t had the best of years in 2022, his record still puts him in the statistical lead, so I’m betting on Public Sector, piloted by top jockey Flavien Prat.

This four-year-old bay colt moneyed ten of his 13 career starts, winning five. That includes the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (Grade II) and the Saranac Stakes (Grade III)—both at Saratoga last year—and the Hill Prince Stakes (Grade II) at Belmont Park last October.

Chad C. Brown trains Public Sector for Klaravich Stables, Inc.
Race seven — Glens Falls Stakes (Grade II)

This is a $250,000 purse, 1-1/2 mile turf run for fillies and mares four years old and upward. I agree with the morning line here: Bet the 1/2 favorite, War Like Goddess, with veteran jockey Joel Rosario aboard.

This five-year-old bay mare finished eight of her nine career starts in the money, winning seven. Her most recent wins include the Flower Bowl Stakes (Grade I) here at Saratoga last September and the Bewitch Stakes (Grade III) at Keeneland in April of this year.
Will War Like Goddess win? Magic 8-Ball says “Yes.”

Thoroughbred Hall of Famer William I. Mott trains War Like Goddess for owner George Krikorian.
Race nine —Test Stakes (Grade I)

This is a $500,000 purse, seven-furlong dirt track run for three-year-old fillies. One of the more competitive races I’ve assessed for today’s free horse racing picks, I’m still buying a win ticket on the 2/5 morning-line favorite, Matareya, with Flavien Prat in the irons.

This bay filly moneyed seven of her eight career starts, winning five. Most notably, she won her three most recent graded stakes races: the Beaumont Stakes (Grade III) at Keenland in April, the Eight Belles Stakes (Grade II) at Churchill Downs in May, and the Acorn Stakes (Grade I) at Belmont Park in June.

Brad H. Cox trains Matareya for owner-breeder Godolphin, LLC.
Race ten — Whitney Stakes (Grade I)

This is a $1,000,000 purse, 1-1/8 miles dirt track race for four-year-olds and upward. For this race, I like the second-favored (at 2/1) Olympiad, ridden by top jockey Junior Alvarado.

This four-year-old bay colt finished in the money for nine of his ten career starts, winning seven. More importantly, he’s won all five of his starts in 2022, which included the Mineshaft Stakes (Grade III) and the New Orleans Classic Stakes (Grade II) at Fair Grounds, as well as the Alysheba Stakes (Grade II) and the Stephen Foster Stakes (Grade II)—both at Churchill Downs.

William I. Mott trains Olympiad for owners Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stable, LLC, and LNJ Foxwoods.
Race eleven — Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes (Grade I)

This is a $1,000,000 purse, 1-3/16 miles turf race for three-year-olds. I’m banking on the 8/1 sleeper Classic Causeway, piloted by Julien R. Leparoux.

First off, this three-year-old chestnut colt finished midpack in this year’s Kentucky Derby, against the toughest competition available. And while the other members of this eleven-horse field are no slouches, neither do they look capable of beating Classic Causeway.

Spa selections 2022: Saratoga picks August 6
In Spa Selections, our correspondent provides his Saratoga picks for key races on today’s Saratoga card!

                  Race 5 – Fasig-Tipton Lure Stakes

                  1. #7 Sifting Sands (5-1) – Has already won twice at Saratoga and is likely to be overlooked with the other Chad Brown trainee taking more money, he could sit a nice stalking trip here

                  2. #1 Public Sector (2-1) – Didn’t have enough in the stretch run last time in the Grade III Forbidden Apple, but is still a prime contender who can win if not too far back

                  3. #8 Somelikeithotbrown (5-2) – Hasn’t been winning as much recently, but still a threat with his pace and ability to control the race, should hang on in the money here

                  4. #2 Safe Conduct (6-1) – Strong at this distance and should be good value off a layoff here, and seven for ten lifetime in the money on the turf

Race 7 – Grade II Glens Falls Stakes

                  1. #2 Virginia Joy (5-2) – Will need to run her best, but is one of the few who has shown the ability to control the pace in these long races, and has top flight connections to win here

                  2. #6 War Like Goddess (1-2) – Has won both tries at Saratoga and gets Rosario here who is making all the right calls on the turf and in general this meet

                  3. #3 Petricor (6-1) – This filly by Frankel seems to want more distance, and with a good distance rider in Jose Ortiz, will get it here for Juddmonte and Chad Brown

                  4. #1 Temple City Terror (12-1) – Gets a plus for solid class here, and is a bit more proven than other long shots like Flanigan’s Cove and should bounce back after a tough effort

Race 9 – Grade I Longines Test Stakes

                  1. #1 Matareya (2-5) – Tough to pick a horse with this short of odds, but hard to make a case for any others to beat this one if she runs her best here

                  2. #6 Hot Peppers (5-1) – A nice win last time out in the Grade III Victory Ride, and will probably stay aggressive here with Saez, so this one may need softer fractions to have winning chances

                  3. #2 Sterling Silver (15-1) – Might be one to have closing chances if the pace heats up, with her and Chi Town Lady the two that will likely be towards the back early

                  4. #4 Wish You Well (12-1) – Can try taking a flier with this one over November Rein purely hoping that last race was poor because of the surface and this one has been working well

                  Race 10 – Grade I Whitney Stakes

                  1. #4 Olympiad (2-1) – Comes off a great work and has won five straight, may be the best at this distance and can win as long as Junior Alvarado keeps him close

                  2. #6 Life Is Good (6-5) – Nearly knocked off Jackie’s Warrior in the H Allen Jerkens last year, and is the winner here if he faces little pressure early and gets soft fractions

                  3. #2 Hot Rod Charlie (9-2) – Adds blinkers, and should be right up there pressing Life Is Good, so might get the right trip to have winning chances here if he can apply enough pressure early

                  4. #1 American Revolution (5-1) – Has a dominant win over this track at the distance from last year, but likely needs a crazy pace scenario to win here

Race 11 – Grade I Saratoga Derby Invitational

                  1. #4 Nations Pride (7-2) – William Buick comes to town only for this mount, and after seeing this Godolphin colt closing well in the Belmont Derby, he seems like the best at this distance

                  2. #6 Annapolis (5-2) – This colt by War Front has been very impressive in four career starts all on turf, and has shown indications to be able to handle added distance here

                  3. #10 Stone Age (9-2) – Another foreign runner who closed strongly in the Belmont Derby, and one that should certainly be there late especially if Classic Causeway is pressed by Emmanuel

                  4. #8 Sy Dog (12-1) – Four for five lifetime in the money, should be a good value play here, and only lost by a length and a half last time despite finishing sixth with a tough stretch run

                  Race 12 – Maiden 88k

                  1. #2 Your Mission (5-2) – Keeps Irad Ortiz and only lost by a length last time after showing some improvement, so seems like the one to beat here in an evenly-matched field

                  2. #3 Curlin’s Wisdom (8-1) – His one race on the turf was promising, and most others have been competitive with speed figures that are as good or better than the rest

                  3. #8 Dreampoint (8-1) – A lot of races to have not broken his maiden, but this looks like one that Rosario will have closing late to hit the board

                  4. #9 Biondi (7-2) – Gets the edge over Walk Em Down because this one has started and shown speed, but has had trouble holding onto leads

Rocket Picks : Del Mar, Mountaineer, and Saratoga for August 6, 2022
                        By: Aaron Halterman

It’s time for another fantastic Saturday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head back to Saratoga for the Middle Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Del Mar and Mountaineer for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. It’s West Virginia Derby (G3) Day at Mountaineer!

Below is our free middle Pick 4 for Saratoga:

                        Saratoga August 5, 2022

                        Race 6: Maiden Special Weight

#1A Point Proven and #1 Crupi both debut for Pletcher and look ready to run. Pletcher usually unleashes his best horses on the weekends at Saratoga. #2 Disarm should improve in his second start for a trainer who is red hot right now at Saratoga. Asmussen knows how to win with two-year-olds as well.

Race 7: Glens Falls Stakes (G2)
                        freestar

#6 War Like Goddess is a total monster. Last year, she came to Saratoga and dominated this race before taking home the Flower Bowl Stakes (G1) to end the meet. This year, she returned to the races with an easy win at Keeneland, which should have her sharp for this race. #2 Virginia Joy has some solid wins this year and was competitive against a top-notch field in her last start.

                        Race 8: Allowance

#8 Saint Tapit debuted like a monster for Pletcher and the runner-up broke his maiden last weekend. This could be the next big star out of the Pletcher barn. #6 Hometown moves to the Atras barn for this race, which usually leads to an improved effort.

                        Race 9: Test Stakes (G1)

#1 Matareya is back looking for her fifth straight victory and her second straight in a Grade 1. She made short work of her competition in each of her prior 4 wins while most of the time never being asked to do much running. #6 Hot Peppers looked solid winning the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park last time out and should be the one who’s most prepared for the new challenge today.

                        THE TICKET

                        $10 Pick 4 (Races 6-9) 1A,2 / 6 / 6,8 / 1 – $40

COMMENTS: SHEDARESTHEDEVIL ran the top last race speed figure and loves the distance with seven wins in 12 races. PRIVATE MISSION is undefeated in two at the distance. Trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Juan Hernandez won six of 13 together. BLUE STRIPE won five of seven on a fast track with a second. SAMURAI CHARM should be near peak form in her third start after a layoff.

COMMENTS: THE CHOSEN VRON has five wins a second and third in seven starts. CARMELITAS MAN has been training well for his first race since late May. JIMMY BLUE JEANS should be on the gas from the start to the finish. NONE ABOVE THE LAW drops from GII race to a level that is a better fit.

COMMENTS: Going to go for the upset with VIRGINIA JOY. She has a pair of seconds at the distance, the last by a nose. WAR LIKE GODDESS is two for two at Saratoga winning this race with ease last year. She has seven wins in nine races. The pair of nonwinning efforts were in first starts off the bench, like today. TREASURE TAILS looks overmatched on paper, but this is her third race after a layoff and upped her speed figure in four straight. KEY BISCAYNE found her groove winning her last two races and just ran away from the field at the end of a Grade III win in her last.

COMMENTS: Usually, we like to play away from a huge favorite like MATAREYA, but it really looks like she should be able to control the race at her will. WISH YOU WELL just needs to run back to her debut win. A clean start is all she needs, and she has been loving Saratoga during her workouts. NOVEMBER REIN likes a fast track winning three of five with a second and third. She usually breaks sharply and should challenge for the lead right away. HOT PEPPERS showed better early pace in the first quarter and half mile of her last outing. A couple of maintenance workouts since suggest she will be fit again.

COMMENTS: LIFE IS GOOD is a neck away from being undefeated in eight races in the United States. He will be the heavy favorite and if he gets an easy lead, he could make easy work of this race. HOT ROD CHARLIE topped LIFE IS GOOD in the Dubai World Cup, but that track is a tough heavy and does not have the same speed bias as Saratoga. AMERICANREVOLUTION ran much better in his last start and looks to build on that in his third start after a layoff. OLYMPIAD is getting better and better and better. His recent workouts say another stellar effort is coming today.

COMMENTS: It says a ton that trainer Charlie Appleby is bringing jockey William Buick overseas for one mount on Saturday and one on Sunday. He plans on winning both, starting with NATIONS PRIDE today. STONE AGE made a major move in the stretch last out. He likes the distance with two wins, a second and third in four tries. ANNAPOLIS has some of the best pedigree marks in this field. They will be put to the test here versus the toughest group he has seen. SY DOG might get overlooked, but with just a little bit of luck could be undefeated in five career starts.

I've got to go with PERFECT SURVIVOR especially at such a decent 12/1. Meeting a much easier group than last time out. Deiter is very serious with this one, wheeling her right back. Had one of the best speed figures of this group in her last affair. MISS SUSIE R - Is hard not to consider given the company run in lately. Overall the Speed Figures of this racer look decent in this contest. WINNINGFORPLEASURE - The average Equibase class figure of 47 makes this one tough to beat. Will almost certainly come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved swiftly to the lead recently.
