The ridiculous control that television has over College Basketball helps to set this one up for us, with CBS forcing an early morning start for two teams that had to play grueling games on Thursday night. And we can let line value take care of the rest.

On Thursday we turned a 4* Under ticket in the U.C.L.A./Arizona State matchup, noting how the recent Bruin scoreboard results told a different tale than such scores usually would – they had a four-game stretch in which they both blew out the opposition and the game played Over, which would seem to suggest that the offense was clicking. Instead it was outstanding defense that broke those games open, and it happened so early (they allowed just 26.0 in the first half of that quartet) that the second half of each game became a free flowing affair with a lot of reserves on the court. It brought excellent value to Thursday’s setting, but we did not get the result that we were looking for. But the nature of that result brings the same value back in play today.

Note that the pace was right where we wanted in to be in the Bruins/Sun Devils clash, with only 91 field goal attempts and 30 free throws in the game. And two good defenses forced the ball away from the basket, with 36 of the 91 shots coming from beyond the arc. The problem is that an incredible percentage of those shots found the nets. The two teams combined to knock down 19-36 triples, and 24-30 at the free throw line. You can not win a bet when that happens, but many times you can win the next one, and note the value aspect we have today – even with that brilliant Thursday shooting, that game still played below today’s current line.

While Arizona does play quicker than Arizona State in general, that is not in play this morning. A Wildcat team that is woefully short of depth is a major candidate to struggle in the short turnaround time, with Chase Budinger going the full 40 minutes on Thursday, and Jordan Hill and Nic Wise 39 apiece. Those three combined to score 64 of the 83 Arizona points in that game, and they are pretty much the entire show offensively. That means matchup problems here, because U.C.L.A. has an excellent defender at each of their positions (Josh Shipp, Alfred Aboya and Darren Collison), and that is part of why Arizona could only manage 60 points in that blowout loss at Pauley Pavilion earlier. Now with some weary legs they have even more difficulty getting into a flow, and that helps to lead to an easy Under in this one.
