Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 19)

It’s the penultimate weekend of the summer racing season and that means Busan runs an afternoon/evening card on Friday with 7 races from 15:35 to 21:00. Here are the previews:

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A competitive maiden to open with. (5) GEUMA UNO debuted unspectacularly last December but didn’t race again until this July. In two starts back, the now gelded runner has a 5th and a 2nd, both at 1200M and both times running on. The additional half-furlong can suit and third-up, he may be peaking. (7) SUPER CRACK is the main danger. His recent form reads well including his last start runner-up finish over 1200M when handy throughout. He can drop in behind the early leaders again here and play a big role in the finish. (1) PUNGUN JOHWA has similarly been improving of late, running 3rd on her latest appearance on July 24th. From the inside gate, she could get the lead here and be in this a long way. (6) MAIN BRIDGE raced once last December, finishing 3rd over 1000M. He looked well in a July trial and can go well first-up. First time starter (3) DASI YEONGGWANG among others to consider.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

(5) S. L. KING remains eligible for class 6 because while he has won a race, practically making all over a mile back in April 2021, that was during the reduced prize-money era. After that win, he didn’t run again until this July 15th when he led for much of the way over 1400M before weakening late on for 6th. He should strip fitter for that run and can win here. (3) JEONGMUN CHITA has made good progress over three outings to date, stepping up to this trip and running a good 3rd two weeks ago in a time quicker than any of the rest of these have posted at the distance. He comes into a better gate today and should go close. (8) ADELE FLY came from well off the pace to run 5th ahead of S. L. King on that July 15th race. With a better start he can go closer. (7) GEUMA SMARTY ran an encouraging 4th on debut over 1300M on July 15th and along with (2) FANTASTIC YEOGEOL is a place chance.

Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(8) BARBELL POSEIDON may be one of just three maidens in the race, but he is favoured to change that status. He has five top-three finishes from ten outings to date and ran a very solid 2nd on his first try at a mile on July 22nd. He can settle midfield or better here and can prove too strong late on. (6) JEOKDO JEONSA was 3rd in that same race, just a length behind Barbell Poseidon. He draws a better gate today and even comes down slightly in the weights and can be competitive again. (1) MILK DAY is up in class having won over 1400M on July 29th. The mile can suit and from a great draw, he can measure up in this company. (2) GRAND CHUKJE gets an apprentice claim and can see his recent run of good form continue. (12) GEUMA INFINITE another in the hunt.

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(8) HANSEN ICHEON made all for a dominant seven-length win over this distance on July 24th. He comes up in class here but the manner of that victory was such that he has little to fear here and will be a short-priced favourite to score again. (11) SINUI JEONSA was a similarly emphatic winner at class 6 level on July 1st. He too is up in class and while the draw is not ideal here, the same apprentice who won on him that day keeps the weight very light and he should be competitive at this level. (6) FLYING REGAL had a poor day at the office on his first try at this level last month. His form prior to that was good though and he is worth another chance here. (9) FUNNY LIFE and (1) COLOR WIND are others who can be considered for at least a place.

Busan Race 5: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Competitive race with no fewer than five of the twelve coming in having won their respective latest starts. They include (3) HALLOWEEN PARTY, who is up in class following a good front-running score over 1300M on July 24th. He comes down in the weights, draws a good gate and looks to have potential for more progress. (1) FLASHY CHARM ran out a class and distance winner two starts back before finishing 3rd in a fast race on July 29th. He draws well here, an apprentice keeps his weight light and he can be a big danger. Draw a line through the latest effort from (12) GLORY KING. That was his first outing since last December and he should be fitter for the run. Prior to his layoff he was a class and distance winner and despite the wide draw, should be competitive here. (4) B. K. HANA and (7) JEONGMUN DRAGON among others with claims in a race of many chances.

Busan Race 6: Class 4 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(11) UNJU HERO beat four of today’s rivals on his way to victory over 1400M at this class on July 8th. He comes up significantly in the weights today but has won at this distance before and also ran 4th in the KRA Cup Mile. He’s the one to beat again. (2) OREUDA was second-favourite that day and duly ran 2nd, his third runner-up finish in his last four starts. He draws well to be on pace and should be able to give Unju Hero a stern examination here. (5) HANEUL JEONSA comes up in class having won well over 1300M on July 10th. A previous try at a mile might have been a bit much a bit soon and he can be given another chance here under a light weight. (4) UNJU BULPAE comes up in class following back-to-back runner-up finishes. He is down significantly in the weights and can be considered. (12) BABEL DREAMER another in the frame.

Busan Race 7: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

(7) ADELE CROWN and (2) GALLANT WARRIOR came hoe 2nd and 3rd when they raced one another at class and distance on July 8th with three lengths between them and Adele Crown just missing out on victory by a nose. They both come up in the weights here but can fight it out between them for the win. (10) DUNCAN returned to action on July 17th following five months out and ran well to finish 3rd at this class and distance, racing on pace throughout. Even with just ten runners, the widest gate at the 1800M start isn’t ideal but he should have come on for that run and can be a danger again here. (3) WONDERFUL SECRET is still class 4 eligible but looks nicely in here, well drawn and under a lighter weight than in recent outings. He can sneak a place. (9) YEONGGWANGUICHUKJE another in the placing hunt.

Race 7: Allowance

#5 Crowding Out goes for two straight victories today after an impressive maiden special weight win over this track last time out. That win was after a layoff as well, which means we could see some improvement from her in this spot. #6 Tuscan Queen was seocnd at this level last time out over this track.

Race 8: Summer Colony Stakes

#1 Army Wife has been solid this season, including a win at a similar level two starts back at Thistledown. She should get a nice stalking trip from this inside post. #7 Bonny South is a consistent horse that will come with a run down the lane; however, she will need a solid pace setup to have a fair chance.

Race 9: Claiming

#6 Diva Ready runs first off of the claim for a solid trainer; however, she last at a lower level last time out. The move up in class does mean the new trainer has confidence, though. #8 Judge Judith goes for her fourth straight victory in this spot; however, she will be moving up in class for this one.

Race 10: Skidmore Stakes

#3 Oxymore was an ultra-impressive winner on debut last time out at Belmont Park and now moves to the Chad Brown barn for his second start today. #8 Appraise looks for two straight victories after picking up a win last time out over this track in a maiden special weight.

Saratoga Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, August 19, 2022

Only two favorites have won spanning the last three Fridays of Saratoga’s Late Pick 4. If the trend continues this week, it could produce a four-figure payout for the 50-cent wager. Friday's final four also are close-out races in the $167,611 pick six carryover.

Here are some notes to help shape your ticket:

SAR 7th race (4:29 EST) -- CROWDING OUT settled between rivals in the second flight after a bumpy start, awaited room behind a wall of horses turning for home, then closed strongly to win when she found a 3-wide seam. She caught MRS GREEN, who returned with a sharp MSW victory (85 Beyer) and held off troubled favorite HEY THERE. She gets plenty of pace to run at in her second start after a 10-month layoff. A LITTLE FAITH had troubled starts in five of her last nine starts and still managed two wins, a second and a third in those races. She draws a good post if she breaks alertly. Stakes-placed entrants FREEDOM SPEAKS and AMERICAN STARLET will draw plenty of attention on the inside, as both finished behind Last Leaf, a winner of four consecutive stakes for 3-year-old fillies. However, Freedom Speaks benefited from a front-end duel in that five-horse field and switches surfaces, while speedy American Starlet probably will be an underlay after she led until late in an allowance race against the boys that came back weak (9/1-0-0 next-out starters).

SAR 8th race (5:05 EST) -- Proven graded stakes form abounds in the $135,000 Summer Colony, with seven entrants combining for a 102/32-27-17 record, $4 million in earnings and an ‘ALL’ punch on the Pick 4 ticket. ENVOUTANTE, a two-time Grade II winner at this distance, tries to bounce back from an ‘empty’ seasonal debut in the Grade I Beholder Mile at Santa Anita and become the sport’s newest millionaire. LEADER OF THE BAND and ARMY WIFE are graded stakes winners at 1-1/8 miles and finished behind odds-on favorite Search Results (4-6, $1.2 million) in the Grade III Molly Pitcher last out. BONNY SOUTH ran fourth in the Molly Pitcher but the added ground helps the late-running millionaire at her best distance. FIRST TO ACT rallied into a fast allowance pace to win going away and makes her stakes debut. MISTY VEIL’S class will be tested, but she carried her speed to a win and a second on ‘off’ tracks in allowance company at Saratoga last year and shows a pair of :47.1 bullet workouts over the track to prepare for her return.

SAR 9th race (5:39 EST) -- Trainer Rudy Rodriguez, whose horses are 66-253 with $3.5 million in earnings this year, entered the week mired in a 1-for-50 slump. He sends out recent claims DIVA READY and VINTAGE GIRL in a wide-open turf route, so use both. DIVA READY’s 3-wide stretch rally two starts back stalled in the final 1/8th behind hard-hitting winner Rosebud’s Hope (27/8-8-5, $264k), then she got the jump on the longshot winner last out and finished second for a $35,000 tag. Also use RADIANT GEM, who can be excused for a troubled trip last out after she rallied into a fast and slow pace for repeat photo-finish victories at today’s distance.

SAR 10th race (6:13 EST) – OXYMORE was purchased privately after a smashing wire-to-wire debut score on the Belmont lawn in which he ‘broke very fast’ and ‘powered away.’ Co-owner Michael Dubb had this race on the radar ever since. If Oxymore doesn’t win, his new stable-mate, APPRAISE, could do so for leading trainer Chad Brown. He sat a golden trip off a contested duel, but he had to dig deep to repel a mid-stretch challenge and win at first asking.

Looks to beat this group of horses in this race if you believe at all in pedigree - big sire progeny edge having Mendelssohn as this colt's father. Sire's 2-year old fillies and colts have been lucrative bets lately. Lopez has been scorching the last month, winning at a nifty 18 percent rate. MO SNOW - By Nyquist, has a clear advantage in the bloodlines - brothers and sisters have competed admirably as two-year olds. His sire has a reliable return on investment of +4 in two-year old races. COACHES MEETING - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this horse look competitive in this race. Has to be considered as Calhoun has been among the best trainers with two-year olds. No strangers to the winner's circle, Calhoun and Saez ought to have this colt breaking away from the field.

When looking at today's class rating, he will have to notch a better speed figure than last time around the track to be competitive in this dirt sprint.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - WESTON - Based on my calculations, has the speed to wire this bunch. With a competent ride by Gutierrez, this one may hit the finish line first.

2^nd race [Md 75000, 1 mi TURF] – (1) Beachfront Bid (A) was badly impeded in the stretch for Chad Brown at Belmont Park and still finished fourth just a length behind the winner but was moved up to third by DQ. Now, she drops into the claiming ranks for the first time. (2) Birthday Time (B) was a hard-fought second last time and was claimed by Joe Sharp. (8) Lady Firefoot (B) was last early after a slow start, then had to check a few times, and still finished fourth in her debut turf sprint. (7) Gather the Facts was second in her debut for Chad Brown and then had a rough trip against a strong field in her second start as the favorite.
4^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (1) Transactional will make his debut and (1A) Indemnity who was second in his first at Saratoga make a strong entry for Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables. (4) Whiskey Lullaby set the pace, finished third, and was claimed by Jose Camejo who wins with 33% of his new horses. (5) Logan’s Runner is a debut runner for Bruce Levine who has surprised with his first-time starters recently. (2) Outperform will move from dirt to turf for Todd Pletcher and Repole Stable.
8^th race [Summer Colony, 1 1/8 mi] – (1) Army Wife is a past multiple graded stakes winner last year and the winner of an undercard stake on Ohio Derby day at Thistledown. This restricted stake is an ideal spot for this Mike Maker runner. (4) Leader of the Band comes off a pair of very good performances at Monmouth Park with a second in the Molly Pitcher (G3) behind Search Results and a win in the Lady Secret. (7) Bonny South is a $1 million earner based on many board hitting performances in graded stakes. (3) Envoutante is another mare that we are used to seeing in graded stakes. She won the Fall City (G2) in her last start of 2021. Her 2022 debut in the Beholder (G1) was not good.
