The Ipswich Turf Club will play host to eight races on Wednesday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie selections. The track is rated a Soft 5, and the rail is out 8m from the 1100m to the winning post and 6m for the remainder of the course. The meeting is scheduled to get underway at 12:33pm AEST.
Best Bet at Ipswich – Argyle Lane

Argyle Lane might build the cult following that his older half-brother Incentivise has if he continues on his winning ways. The Joshua King-trained five-year-old is unbeaten after two career starts on the Sunshine Coast, winning both races in fine style. The son of Golden Archer has an ideal racing pattern, going handy to the speed and then showing a good turn of foot when required – a bit like Incentivise. From barrier nine, Michael Murphy will roll forward in search of a prominent position before hopefully getting clear in the straight.

Next Best at Ipswich – Maple Door

He is starting to get a bit costly, but Maple Door finds a winnable race on Wednesday. The Kelly Schweida-trained four-year-old has finished third in all four starts this preparation, with all four runs coming at Doomben in metropolitan grade. Although this meeting is on a Wednesday, it is only provincial, so the horses he is up against are a touch below what he’s used to. The son of Sebring hasn’t drawn a good gate this campaign, so connections would be pleased to see him jump from barrier five, with the state’s top jockey, James Orman, in the saddle once again. He can race a bit handier on Wednesday and give this race a real shake over 1700m.

Best Value at Ipswich – Super Art

After winning her maiden at the end of her autumn campaign, it is fair to say that Super Art hasn’t gone on with the job. The Ben Ahrens-trained four-year-old had two plain trials at Toowoomba and Deagon before running well below her best at Gatton first-up and then failing to beat a runner home at this track over 1200m on August 5. While none of that really screams ‘back me’, there was more merit in her last-start last than what meets the eye. Her only win came over 1000m, so we aren’t convinced that she gets much more than that, while her recent run was in a competitive Fillies & Mares Benchmark 62. She drops 0.5kg and comes back in grade and distance, while she has also drawn to do no work from barrier three under Samantha Collett, who rides Ipswich better than most jockeys. Expect a big price, but we could get a run for our money.

HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie picks for Wednesday’s seven-race metropolitan meeting on the Kensington track at Randwick. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 4m for the entire course, and the first race of the afternoon is scheduled to jump at 1:25pm AEST.
Best Bet at Kensington – Devil’s Throat

We have always liked the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Devil’s Throat, and although he proved costly for a while, he is ready to go on with it this time around. The four-year-old gelding has won two of his nine races, while he’s been the bridesmaid on a further four occasions, missing the placings just three times in his career. One of those failures was in his most recent start back in April when beating just one runner home in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on a Heavy 9 track. His recent trial at Rosehill was excellent, so we are confident backing him first-up over 1250m. Sam Clipperton rode the son of Snitzel in that trial, and he has been rewarded with the ride on Wednesday. This horse should be too classy in this.
      Best Bet

      4yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Sam Clipperton (60kg)

      $4.20 with Ladbrokes
Next Best at Kensington – Arnold

Arnold won like a pretty smart horse at Kembla Grange when resuming on August 4, racing away to win by three lengths under James McDonald. The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old ran second to Pizarro on debut in December last year before going for a lengthy spell, but his first-up win off no official trial suggests he has come back well and has plenty of upside. The son of Hinchinbrook has drawn wide on Wednesday, but the race doesn’t possess much speed on paper from the lower draws, so we are expecting McDonald to get this gelding across and into a handy position early on. He stays at 1400m, should strip fitter for the first-up run and keeps McDonald in the saddle, so we are expecting him to go close once again.
      Next Best

      Race 7 – Silk #10 Arnold (12)

      4yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (56.5kg)

Best Value at Kensington – The Englishman

The Snowden camp can have another big day at the races on Wednesday, with a couple of nice chances stepping out. The Englishman is set to debut following some promising trial form, and the fact that he holds a nomination for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) suggests the stable has a fair opinion of him too. The three-year-old son of Tavistock has had the benefit of four trials – two of which have been this time in – and he’s looked better each time. Although this horse is likely to want further, the 1300m looks a nice enough starting point. Kerrin McEvoy will be biding his time from barrier seven and hoping the race is run to suit, allowing his mount to finish off strongly.

Sandown betting tips, top odds & quaddie | Wednesday, August 24

        What Sandown Hillside Races
Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
        When Wednesday, August 24, 2022
        First Race 1pm AEST

        Visit Ladbrokes

The Lakeside track at Sandown Racecourse plays host to a competitive seven-race card for Wednesday’s metropolitan meeting in Victoria. With plenty of rain in the area in the lead up to race day, the track is expected to be on the worse side of a Soft 6, while the rail comes out to the 6m mark for the entire track. We kick off the day of racing at 1pm AEST.
        SANDOWN BEST BET: Adelabelle

There is little hiding the fact that we rate the Maddie Raymond-trained Adelabelle, and despite being five weeks between runs, she looks a clear best bet of the day. The six-year-old mare put nine lengths on her rivals in a Warrnambool maiden on July 18 in Heavy 10 conditions, so we are happy to know she will handle the expected conditions at Sandown. With the likes of Elveena and Spirit Of Gold known to be frontrunners, this 2100m event for fillies and mares looks perfectly set up for a backmarker like Adelabelle to work through her gears approaching the home turn. If Damian Lane can have her doing just that, we should see this girl’s ability shine through. At $6.50 with some online betting sites, she looks to be a perfect bank-builder.

        6yo Mare | T: Maddie Raymond | J: Damian Lane (55.5kg)

NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: Sabre Princess

The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Sabre Princess brought up a deserved win at Geelong on August 3, and we anticipate she will build on that effort when she comes to town on Wednesday. The five-year-old mare put in a visually dominant performance when settling towards the rear of the field and absolutely flying home to get the job done in rather soft fashion in the end. With plenty of her rivals wanting to take up the running in this BM64 over the mile, the race looks perfectly set-up for this daughter of Sebring. Armed with arguably the best turn of foot in the race, if Patrick Moloney can have her within striking distance, look for Sabre Princess to be savaging the line and ultimately proving too hard to hold out.
        Next Best

        Race 3 – silks#8 Sabre Princess (6)

        5yo Mare | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr | J: Patrick Moloney (59kg)

        $3.50 with Neds
        SANDOWN VALUE BET: Swift Hit

With race fitness on his side and some decent form as well, we are hoping the Peter Smith-trained Swift Hit can bring his wet-track form to town when he steps out over 1400m in the second event of the day. The seven-year-old gelding has not finished worse than fifth this campaign, and considering he has a win and four minor placings to his name in that time, he cannot be ignored – despite the big price on offer with online Bookmakers. The Swift Alliance appreciated a genuinely run 1300m race at Bendigo on August 14 where he got the bob in on the line on a Heavy 8. With similar conditions and a genuinely run 1400m event expected, the race looks perfectly set-up to be a carbon copy of his last-start win, and this time we get a massive price to find out.
        Best Value

Saratoga Horses in Focus for Wednesday, August 24
Posted on August 22, 2022 by David Aragona

RACE 3: MY SLICK NICK (#2)

Built to Last (#4) is clearly the horse to beat as he drops in for a tag for the first time in his career. This doesn’t appear to be the toughest $40k maiden claimer for the level, and he’s run speed figures that tower over this field in his recent starts. That said, he is coming off his worst performance in months when cut back to today’s distance earlier in the meet. He did have an excuse that day, as he was rushed into a fast pace from his rail post position, but he still faded badly in the lane. I have no argument that he isn’t the most likely winner, but I don’t feel compelled to swallow a price around even-money or lower on this 0-for-8 maiden. The only alternative that I can come up with is first time turfer My Slick Nick (#2). Though this gelding is by mediocre turf influence Frost Giant, he is out of a dam who achieved all of her success on grass and was a 4-time winner on this surface. Curiously, none of her other foals have tried turf. My Slick Nick showed speed in his career debut here earlier in the month before fading in the stretch. He moved a bit like a turf horse that day, and seems like one that should be fairly quick from his inside post position. He’ll be dangerous here if he can get in front of Built to Last early and secure the inside path, especially with the temporary rails coming down on the Mellon course this week.

            RACE 6: OVERBORE (#11)

Both favorites in this N1X allowance look pretty formidable off their towering last-out speed figures, but I think it’s valid to question whether either can repeat those numbers in this spot. Thin White Duke (#6) will almost surely beat this field if he runs another 116 TimeformUS Speed Figure, which he earned for his narrow miss in the Grade 3 Troy behind Golden Pal. While that appears to be a legitimate performance, Golden Pal was not at his best that day, and Thin White Duke got a sensational ride from Jose Ortiz. This horse is not exactly a winning, and has benefited from perfect trips twice in a row. Main rival King Angelo (#5) earned a career-best 115 TimeformUS Speed Figure for his victory over New York-breds in late July. However, he enjoyed an uncontested early lead that day in a race where no one was able to close from the back of the pack. There’s other speed this time, so I’m skeptical that he’ll be as fortunate. I actually prefer Call Me Harry (#8) from that July 24 event at a better price. He ran poorly after an awkward start, but is now making his first start off the claim for Joe Sharp, who does well with his turf sprinters. I liked both of his prior efforts at Monmouth, especially his performance two back when third behind subsequent stakes winner Breakthrough. My top pick is Overbore (#11), who cuts back in distance after trying a mile in his return to turf 11 days ago. He got the wrong trip that day, as Flavien Prat inexplicably chose to rate him off a slow pace, prompting the horse to get rank for the first quarter mile. I prefer him going shorter anyway and like him getting back into a turf sprint. He has to run the fastest race of his career to compete here, but I think he still has some upside for Wesley Ward, whose horses have been running very well at this meet. The rider switch to Joel Rosario certainly doesn’t hurt either.

RACE 9: TIDE OF THE SEA (#3)

It’s perplexing that this John’s Call would draw such a weak field. A 12-furlong optional claiming $62k/N2X affair last weekend attracted a much stronger group, so I can’t blame the connections of Tide of the Sea (#3) for scratching out of that spot to instead run here. He’s the only one out of 6 John’s Call nominees who ran last Sunday to make that decision. I had picked Tide of the Sea in that race, so I surely like him in this spot, where his advantages seem even more apparent. He’s handled extended distance before, which is a question a few of the outsiders in here still have to answer. Some may question his current form, but I don’t think some of his recent performances are nearly as bad as they seem. He put in a decent effort three back on May 1 against a strong allowance field, and then got an odd ride on June 3 when his jockey parked him out in the center of the turf course and never asked for serious run. He made his first start off the claim for Tom Morley in an off-the-turf affair last time and actually ran deceptively well, contesting a strong pace and battling on gamely to just miss second. I think that performance bodes well for his return to turf and he projects to get an easier trip as the likely lone speed. That could be a real advantage now that the temporary rails have come down on the Mellon turf course. The other short prices in this affair do very little for me.
