Rocket Picks : Del Mar and Saratoga for August 25, 2022
              By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s kick off Travers week with a bang! For the free pick 4, we will head back to Saratoga for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Del Mar for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Saratoga:

              Saratoga August 25, 2022

              Race 7: Allowance

#1 James Jones looks to rebound in this spot after a poor effort against allowance runners last time out at Monmouth Park. She should run better in this spot. #3 Danzigwiththestars goes for two straight victories after a nice New York bred allowance victory last time out over this track.

              Race 8: Maiden Special Weight
              freestar

#5 Tizzy in the Sky nearly won on debut last time out, and now moves to the Camejo barn, which should lead to improvement. #7 Liquidity Provider came within a head of winning on debut in his last start, which came over this track. Look for her to try to take this field gate to wire today.

              Race 9: Riskaverse Stakes

#5 Canisy looks for two straight victories today after winning over this track last time out in gate to wire fashion over allowance runners. This is a good spot for her today. #3 Skims takes a nice drop in class after taking on some of the best horses in this division in her last three starts.

              Race 10: Claiming

#6 Digital Future takes a drop in class for this race, while running as a gelding for the first time, which could lead to improvement. The layoff should not be a problem with Brown training. #1 Spettro drops down in class for this race after running poorly against allowance runners in his last three starts.

              THE TICKET

              $.50 Pick 4 (Races 7-10) 1,3,4,8,9 / 5,7 / 3,5,6,9 / 1,6 – $40

Racing heads to the Bendigo Jockey Club this Thursday afternoon for what promises to be a bumper nine-race program. With plenty of rain all over the state, participants will be racing on a Heavy 9, whilst the rail will be out 5m for the entire circuit. Horses with race fitness under their belt and an ability to handle rain-affected tracks are a must for those looking to have a successful day at the ‘Nursery of Champions’. The first race is set to go at 12:30pm AEST.
Best Bet at Bendigo – Lascars

The ever-prominent combination of James Cummings and Damien Oliver will be looking to strike gold once again when they partner with three-year-old gelding Lascars. The son of Sepoy has four runner-up efforts to his name from six starts, but the form he brings to a maiden like this is ridiculously good. Prior to running second to What You Need at Geelong on August 3, he chased home one of the best up-and-coming sprinters in the land, Giga Kick, down the Flemington straight over 1000m. Both of those efforts were on Soft going, and despite this being his first go on a Heavy, we expect he will handle the conditions with little issue. From barrier two, we anticipate Ollie will have this bloke settled close to the speed, if not leading the field up. If he does that, then this race may be over within the first 200m.

Next Best at Bendigo – Bews

The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained Bews was backed in like he was a sure thing last time out and duly repaid his fans with a comfortable enough victory. Having gained the perfect run in transit under Jamie Kah, the three-year-old I Am Invincible colt managed to hold a one-length margin over the final furlong, suggesting there could be a fair bit of upside about this bloke. He gains the services of Damian Lane for this venture, and as long as ‘Frosty’ can have him settled with cover either in the one-one or three pairs back in the moving line upon settling, then Bews can win this.

Next Best Again at Bendigo – Goliotus

We were keen on the chances of the Ricky Bruhn-trained Goliotus at the abandoned Hamilton meeting on August 21, so we are hoping he can get the job done for us at Bendigo on Thursday instead. The five-year-old has a career record of 5: 2-2-1 on Heavy ground, and we anticipate he will build on that here. The Magnus gelding wasn’t beaten that far by Golden Crusader and Pres De Toi at Sandown on August 7, and with a proven wet-track record and a want to settle close to the speed, Goliotus looks a great bet in the third leg of the quaddie.

Wagga plays host to eight races on Thursday, and HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst has studied the form and picked out his best bets and quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Heavy 10 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course, while the meeting is scheduled to get underway at 12:55pm AEST.
Best Bet at Wagga – Sheila

In the last race of the afternoon, Matthew Dale saddles up Sheila in what will be her first start at the races. The four-year-old mare has had one barrier trial, winning at Goulburn on August 8 over 800m on a Heavy 9 track. Nick Heywood will be in the saddle on Thursday, and he and Dale will be hoping to continue their good run together. Drawn a touch awkwardly in barrier nine, Sheila is likely to race in the first half of the field – like she did in her trial – and be within striking distance late. We expect the daughter of Adelaide to make it a winning debut.

Next Best at Wagga – Supido Beauty

After winning on debut, Supido Beauty can win again to start her career. The three-year-old filly by Supido did enough to lead all of the way at Goulburn in her first start, clinging on over 1180m on a Heavy 10 track. Prior to that, in her only barrier trial she led and defeated Gold Trip, who has three Group 1 placings to his name. Drawn in the inside alley on Thursday under Alysha Collett, the Darrell Burnet-trained filly is expected to lead and fend off the challenges once again.

Best Value at Wagga – My Bold Boy

Mitch Beer and Jason Lyon combine in the second race with the speedy My Bold Boy. The five-year-old son of Brazen Beau won back-to-back races last preparation before finishing second at this track and distance on a Heavy 8. In his first-up run this time in on the Ballarat synthetic, he led the field up and just capitulated late to run fourth behind Kosowski, who has since raced well. From barrier nine, Lyon will send the gelding forward and be the horse the others have to catch.

Posted on August 23, 2022 by David Aragona

                        RACE 4: ROYAL MOVER (#6)

Ee Yah (#7) could go favored in this maiden claimer for 2-year-olds as he drops in for a tag following a decent runner-up finish on debut at Monmouth. That has proven to be a strong race, as winner Great Navigator returned to finish a good second in the Grade 3 Sanford in his next start. Additionally, the third-place finisher returned to win with an improved speed figure. He makes sense as he switches into the barn of David Jacobson, who is seeking his first victory since a recent return to training. Yet I prefer a different runner from that same Monmouth race. Royal Mover (#6) finished fourth, about 4 lengths behind Ee Yah when they met on debut, though the Pletcher runner was finishing better and galloped out well. The major difference between them is that Royal Mover has gotten in an additional start, having raced at Monmouth again in late July. While it might appear that he regressed that day, the trip just did not work out. He showed improved tactical speed on the backstretch, but was then eased off the pace and found himself in a difficult position pinned down on the rail. He had some run in upper stretch, but could never get out from in behind a tiring foe while stuck on the rail until it was too late. I think he’s better than his past performances indicate. Furthermore, Todd Pletcher is 6 for 11 (55%, $4.27 ROI) with 2-year-old maidens making their third career starts at Saratoga.

                        RACE 6: QUEEN BOURBON (#3)

Rocky Sky (#8) figures to go favored here as she stretches out in distance for Chad Brown. This once well-regarded filly is still seeking her first win in this country after disappointing at a short price last time. She found herself in a seemingly weak race for this level that day and yet still couldn’t capitalize on a strong pace setup when attempting to rally up the rail in the lane. It’s unclear if this dramatic stretch-out in distance will suit her, though the slower pace could allow her to attain forward position. Among those who could take money, I prefer Light Stars (#7). Christophe Clement rarely has his European imports ready to fire their best efforts first time in this country, and this filly ran like one who needed a race off the bench. She was away awkwardly and then got rank through the opening stages, fighting Joel Rosario’s restraint for several furlongs. She ultimately settled and passed some tired runners late, suggesting there’s more in the tank. She feels like more of a certainty to successfully stretch out. I suppose Beside Herself (#2) is a threat to wire the field if she is ridden aggressively. She has used those tactics successfully in the past, though the 12-furlong trip seems like a tall order for this 3-year-old taking on elders. My top pick is Queen Bourbon (#3). I acknowledge that she got a perfect trip when she won her N1X condition two back at Belmont, where she saved ground early and produced an effective closing kick when angled out in the stretch. However, she got the wrong trip when she returned 21 days later at Saratoga. Breaking from the rail, she got shuffled back into the first turn and then made a premature, wide move up to stalk the pace. That race was dominated by horses who were ridden more patiently, and I’m hoping we see Jose Ortiz resort to those tactics this time.

                        RACE 8: HANDBELLE (#1)

I’m somewhat skeptical of the likely favorites in this maiden event. Tizzy in the Sky (#5) figures to attract strong support off her runner-up finish on debut at Belmont. She took money and ran well, just getting nailed in the last furlong after traveling strongly into the race. I do find it a little curious that she’s now being transferred to a new trainer, though Jose Camejo has had success at this meet. Liquidity Provider (#7) should also take money off her solid debut performance. She looked like a winner in upper stretch that day, but got passed from the inside by a longshot in the closing stages. Both of these fillies were primed to win on debut and didn’t quite get it done, so I’m reluctant to assume they’ll improve second time out. Alessia (#2) is another second time starter to consider, as she did put in a nice effort at Keeneland. However, the subsequent layoff and spotty worktab are a little concerning. I’m intrigued by both Bill Mott trained runners. The more logical of the two is Precursory (#8), who has earned speed figures that are comparable to both favorites in her recent starts. She also seems like one that may benefit from a slight turnback after trying a mile twice in a row. My top pick is the bigger price Handbelle (#1). I know she looks light on speed figures, but I thought she showed some promise in both races last year while racing a bit greenly. It appears that she’s been working well for her return down at Belmont, and I have a feeling that we’re going to see an improved version of her as she makes her 3-year-old debut.

                          Race 8 – Maiden 105k

                          1. #5 Tizzy in the Sky (2-1) – Maybe not one that makes the most sense as a favorite here, but with a few coming out of the same slow-paced maiden here a month ago, take this new shooter

                          2. #6 Dover Dreams (12-1) – Didn’t break well last time out and still closed to within five lengths, but this filly by Arrogate can still run much better with a more favorable trip

                          3. #7 Liquidity Provider (5-2) – Narrowly lost by a head last time even after sitting off a modest pace, but could still likely win here with a slight improvement from that trip

                          4. #2 Alessia (8-1) – Was a huge longshot in her debut but still managed a close third with a good speed figure that could put her in the mix with this group

                          Race 9 – Riskaverse Stakes

                          1. #11 Wonka (6-1) – Draws the outside post which makes this an uphill battle, but should be good value dropping from a grade III, and seems to be improving with every start

                          2. #3 Skims (9-2) – Comes from three straight graded efforts, and even if this filly by Frankel has come up short in stretch runs, she has enough talent to beat this field

                          3. #5 Canisy (7-2) – Controlled a slow pace last time in an optional claimer here a month ago, but can come from off the pace too and should be competitive here

                          4. #6 Customer List (5-1) – Not the most dazzling filly given the connections, but a more forward trip and better circumstances gives this one winning chances here

                          Race 10 – Claiming 35000n2L

                          1. #7 Uncle George (4-1) – Since breaking his maiden impressively two years ago, this gelding has sputtered, but drops into claiming company for the first time and has Rosario here

                          2. #6 Digital Future (5-2) – This Klaravich first time gelding broke his maiden here last year and comes off a long layoff, but gets a big plus based on the class drop alone

                          3. #1 Spettro (6-1) – Castellano and Morley have had a great meet together so far, with this one getting the benefit of running a true turf sprint for the first time where he could have the lead

                          4. #12 Napa Spirit (12-1) – Tough post makes this an exotics play, but first time gelding and lasix for this Brendan Walsh trainee who comes off a year long layoff
