For the final time this calendar year, the synthetic track at Ballarat Turf Club will be the venue for racing in Victoria this Tuesday. Eight races are scheduled for the all-weather surface, and despite it being an overcast day, conditions should be perfect for racing. The meeting is set to get underway at 1pm AEST.
Best Bet at Ballarat – Miss Daniel

Formerly with Richard & Chantelle Jolly, the now Symon Wilde-trained Miss Daniel will be looking to bring up a second-straight win for her new stable. The four-year-old returns to the Ballarat synthetic having finished second at the 1100m here two starts ago before a smart win at Donald on August 16. The Starcraft mare has shown she can be tactically versatile, whether it be settling up on speed or, like she did at Donald, taking a sit off the lead and being left for a final look at the leaders. From barrier 10, we expect Harry Coffey to use Miss Daniel’s early speed to her advantage, and with speed drawn immediately outside of her, she should gain a nice cart across the field. This girl is racing in more than good enough form since her move across the border, and at $2.80 with online Bookmakers, she looks a clear best bet of the day.

Next Best at Ballarat – Ultimate Edition

In the opening leg of the quaddie, we are anticipating the John & Chris Ledger-trained Ultimate Edition can end a run of outs that stretches back nearly 18 months. The five-year-old gelding has finished second at both of his starts this campaign but did look the winner at one point or another in both of those races. It is hard to knock his racing pattern, as he jumps from the barriers cleanly and looks to run his rivals off his feet. Despite there being a bit of competition for early supremacy in this event, we expect Patrick Moloney to be aggressive early and have this bloke lead throughout. He looks to be a different sprinter this campaign since coming onto the synthetic, and a repeat effort of his last two starts should see him prove too hard to run down.

Despite not being at her best this campaign, the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Deep’n Meaningful looks a great play as she hops onto the synthetic for the second time. The Deep Field mare finished second in three of her four runs in her initial campaign, but in two runs back from a spell, she is yet to finish any better than fifth. We are willing to be forgiving on those two runs, with issues within the first 100m proving detrimental. She showed throughout her last campaign that she would prefer to be settled closer to the speed, so if she is settled within the first four after the first furlong, she will be in this right up to her neck. From barrier seven, look for Damien Thornton to have her lobbed in the one-one or outside the leader. If Deep’n Meaningful is afforded that luxury, she will be more than capable of finishing the job in a 1500m maiden like this.

Backrower was stiff not to win in town a couple of weeks ago, so this Class 1 looks to be at his mercy. Michael Freedman had accepted for the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, but the son of Astern was scratched on race morning and comes to this race instead, which looks a fantastic move. Drawn in barrier two with Tommy Berry back in the saddle, this classy three-year-old will either lead or get the gun run just off the leader. This is much easier than what he has been running in, so we expect Backrower will be winning second-up.

Next Best at Newcastle – Magic

We were with Magic first-up at Hawkesbury and he just had a bit go wrong around the small track from the wide barrier. Now second-up and onto a big track like Newcastle, the three-year-old colt looks perfectly placed. Although yet to win from four starts, the impeccably bred son of Snitzel has been contesting tougher races, including two Group placings as a two-year-old. With the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) this horse’s ultimate goal, connections will be hoping he can get his maiden out of the way at provincial level on Tuesday. While the wide barrier isn’t ideal, there is a fair run into the first turn at Newcastle from the 1300m start, so Brenton Avdulla will have a bit of time to find some cover and allow the horse to be saved for one final shot. He is the class of this field by a long way.

Matthew Smith and Blake Spriggs combine in the last race of the day with four-year-old entire Cool Lad. The son of Al Maher has won only two of his 11 starts, but his recent barrier trials suggest he has come back in brilliant order. After finishing his last preparation with a 10th in the Listed Canberra Guineas, Cool Lad trialled behind Group 1 winner Eduardo before having a good hitout over 1000m in a trial behind Shameonus, who has won four races. It is a slight concern that this horse has drawn so wide on the track, but he tends to show great gate speed, so we expect to see him up outside the leader pretty early on. If they don’t overdo it in front, Cool Lad will be in this for a long way.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Newcastle, Ballarat and Rockhampton.
NEWCASTLE: RACE 6 @ 4:25 PM

The well-bred and well-related MAGIC (8) spent his two-year-old career competing at the highest level before being tipped out for time to furnish. Has since returned just missing the placegetters at Hawkesbury and will strip a lot fitter for that outing. Gets his chance to break the maiden status here. UNION ARMY (14) was well fancied on debut but just ran into one better around this circuit. Will take a lot of benefit from that race day experience and should prove tough to hold out. STROBING (3) placed at this track last time out and gets 3kg weight relief with the claim. Top-three candidate again. STROKE OF LUCK (13) is facing the starter for the first time and any market moves must be noted.
SELECTIONS: Magic to win.

BALLARAT SYNTHETIC: RACE 8 @ 4:30 PM

RISING (6) made a nice return two back at Cranbourne then stepped up in grade last time when seventh over 1200m at Sandown-Lakeside on August 7. Fitter now, and will find this more to his liking. Hard to run down. BIG DARRYL (4) is on an eight-day back-up and racing in the best form of his career. Motored late from well back when 2nd over 1600m at Pakenham Synthetic on August 22. Gets the claim today and will take plenty of holding out. JEKYLL'N'HYDE (1) resumes today after running a gallant sixth and beaten 5 lengths over 3200m in the G2 Adelaide Cup at Morphettville on March 22. No fresh form but must be respected against these. RONAY (3) is holding her form well and showed plenty of fight when 2nd over 1400m at this track August 19. Stats here are impressive. A must for multiples.

ROCKHAMPTON: RACE 6 @ 4:50 PM

SERGEANT HULKA (1) led beaten 1L in an Open 3 before winning easily this grade at the Sunshine Coast a month ago. Has been kept up to the mark with a trial since and Butler will ride the speed from the low gate. KNIGHT'S SWORD (4) won the CL1 here by 2L easily running his best race. Has an awkward barrier but Wiggins sticks and the gelding can repeat without surprising. DAWSON DIAMOND (5) is in a high striking barn and found better form at Mackay second-up. Gets some weight relief and can also make the finish. VELARO (2) peaks and looks next best.

Over time, this conditioner has a solid return on investment at this distance/surface. TIME BREAK - Orm has been hot the last month, winning at a nifty 17 percent clip. Last time out, this filly was up against a tougher crew.

SUWANNEE CHICK - I can't ignore the fact that this filly is working extremely well. I like this filly. Has the topmost earnings per race entered in today's contest. MAGNOLIA ROAD - Don't throw out based on last race finish. She didn't land in the top three, but made a nice move down the homestretch making up ground. Could be dangerous at a possible price.

PACKER GIRL - Recorded a run-of-the-mill speed rating in the last race in a $10,000 Maiden Claiming race on July 20th. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that figure.
