Rocket Picks : Del Mar, Gulfstream Park, and Saratoga for September 2, 2022
      By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s have a big Friday! For the free pick 4, we will head back to Saratoga for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Del Mar and Gulfstream Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Saratoga:

      Saratoga September 2, 2022

      Race 7: Claiming

#3 Fieldstone looks to have a speed figure advantage over this group today. Last time out, he was third in a similar race to this one. #5 Topic Changer takes a big drop down in class for this race after a poor showing last time out over this track. The drop in class will help his chances.

      Race 8: Lucky Coin Stakes
      freestar

#1 Big Package was close last time out in a tough allowance event over this track. His best effort is good enough to win in this tough spot. #2 The Critical Way has back class; however, he must improve off of his last two efforts. He has not looked the same recently.

      Race 9: Prioress Stakes (G2)

#2 Hot Peppers was second last time out in the Test Stakes (G1), while two starts back she won the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park. She fits well into this race. #1 Wicked Halo goes for three straight victories in this spot after two dominant wins over the Churchill Downs surface.

      Race 10: Maiden Special Weight

#6 Conquist set the pace last time out in a similar race to this one and nearly held on for the victory. He looks like the lone speed again today, while he cuts back in distance, which should help his chances. #5 Bernardino should like this cut back to the one-mile distance.

      THE TICKET

      $.50 Pick 4 (Races 7-10) 3,5 / 1,2,3,4,5,6 / 1,2,6,9 / 6 – $24

Saratoga Horses in Focus for Friday, September 2
Posted on August 31, 2022 by David Aragona

        RACE 3: GOOD MEDICINE (#1)

Both Most Wanted Man (#2) and Tiz a Giant (#3) exit the same race at this level going 1 3/16 miles. The former arguably had the tougher trip since he had to go wider on the far turn. However, Most Wanted Man had his chance to get up for second in the lane and just didn’t really finish off the race. I don’t exactly get the vibe that more ground suits him as much as I do from Tiz a Giant. This Michael Trombetta trainee handled 11 furlongs when running a good second at this level two back. I like him stretching back out and won’t be surprised if he shows a bit more tactical speed this time. Todd Pletcher has the two other runners with considering. I thought Outperform (#4) ran fine in his turf debut, just hitting his best stride a little too late. However, I have some doubts about the quality of that affair and there’s no guarantee that added ground will suit him. My top pick is Pletcher’s other runner Good Medicine (#1). I thought he really improved with the stretch-out in distance in his two starts going longer at Belmont. He held on well for second behind the talented Balthus on May 20 and then made a nice run into the trifecta on June 18 despite breaking slowly and getting a wide trip. They did risk him for a tag last time, but I thought he again stayed on well that day, and it’s not as if this field came up much tougher than that one. Flavien Prat has ridden well for the Pletcher barn, and I thought this one would be a fair price.

        RACE 8: MAXWELL ESQUIRE (#8)

Morning line favorite Voodoo Zip (#6) has never gone this short, but he did seem to appreciate the turnback to 6 furlongs at Belmont after spending much of his career going longer distances. He’s a contender, but I didn’t want to default to short prices in this Lucky Coin. The Critical Way (#2) figures to be the one they all have to catch if he regains the early speed he failed to use last time at Monmouth. His form has been a little inconsistent of late, but I can make excuses for some of his recent efforts. I thought he was most appealing of those who figure to take money. David Donk has entered a pair of competitors, both of whom have chances. I don’t fully trust Big Package (#1) to work out the right kind of trip from off the pace, but he has been in solid form lately. Thin White Duke (#5) would be awfully tough to beat if he repeated his Troy effort from 4 weeks ago, but it’s a little hard to trust him since he had never run quite that well before. I’m going in a different direction with Maxwell Esquire (#8). The connections scratched out of a softer spot last Saturday to instead run as a longshot in this stakes. Perhaps that’s a good sign for a horse who is looking to regain his best form after a few disappointing efforts. To be fair, he had little chance off the claim last time when going a distance that is too far for him. He also got a 3- to 4-wide trip around both turns. I thought he was running well in this race last year before encountering significant traffic in deep stretch. This is a tall order for him, but there are some things to like and he figures to be a generous price.

        RACE 9: UNION LAKE (#10)

The expected scratch of Smash Ticket takes some of the speed out of this race, but they still figure to be moving up front. That makes the task of Hot Peppers (#2) a little more difficult, since she appears to be committed to setting the pace from her inside post. She’s one of the few runners from her barn to have success at this meet when she finished an excellent second in the Grade 1 Test. I thought she was game to fend off heavy favorite Matareya for second after setting a fast pace in a race that fell apart. There was some bumping in the stretch, but it didn’t appear to significantly affect the outcome. She’s awfully tough to pass when she makes the lead, and looks like the one to beat. Angitude (#6) could also take some money off her third-place finish in the Wilton Stakes. That was going a mile, but she’s been effective sprinting in the past and just seems to be an improving sort. She set the pace last time, but Joel Rosario will likely have to adapt to a stalking role this time. She’s a contender, though I preferred another. Union Lake (#10) showed promise as a 2-year-old, and has seemingly come back in strong form since returning from the layoff this year. She was game to sneak up the rail to break her maiden two back, and improved upon that performance when stepped up against winners last time. Third-place finisher Repealing returned to win out of that race, as did today’s rival Bank On Anna. She’s working well coming into this and should sit the right trip from her outside slot.

Saratoga Late Pick 4 Analysis Friday, September 2, 2022

          by Frank Carulli

Saratoga’s Late Pick 4 wager on Fridays in August yielded only four winning favorites and an average 50-cent payout of $831 spanning the last three weeks. Will the trend continue this Friday, Sept. 2? Here’s a look at the action with a suggested play:

SAR 7th race (4:29 EST) -- Three entrants make their turf debut and the others are a combined 5-for-61 on the lawn, so going with four price shots in a do-or-die leadoff leg. The longshots include: GINNSU WARRIOR, finished between a pair of next-out winners in a 7F main-track sprint and returns to the lawn for a 24-percent claim barn; MOMENTUS, who knocked off a 7-to-5 debut MSW favorite in his first start, was rained off the turf twice recently and looks to carry his speed farther with blinkers on; SPEIGHT’SPERCOMETE, who has good turf bloodlines but tries it for the first time for a high-percentage new acquisition barn; and VIVE BIEN, who tired against a pair of next-out allowance winners and starts fresh off a series of works on the Saratoga lawn for the always-dangerous Saffie Joseph barn.

SAR 8th race (5:05 EST) -- Couldn’t have been more impressed than DANCING BUCK’S repeat win on the cutback to a short sprint. He changed tactics, swung wide off a ground-saving trip at the top of the stretch, inhaled the leaders with a quick burst of speed and was geared down late. Didn’t think much of the field at the time, but the two runners who came back finished 1-2 and were noses apart in a 2X allowance with 93 Beyers. He is today’s solo play.

SAR 9th race (5:39 EST) -- Since May 20, the 10 entrants in the $250,000 Grade II Prioress Stakes are a combined 16-for-24 with two G-III wins, a G-III runner-up and four minor stakes victories. It’s an ‘ALL’ punch from top to bottom of the 6F sprint.

SAR 10th race (6:13 EST) – MEDIA SENSATION returns to the turf and to MSW company off the claim. He nearly unseated the jockey at the start two starts back, awaited room behind a 3-way duel while saving ground until the stretch, then got caught late after he passed the pace setter. The horse who beat him came back and ran second in a $35,000/n2L claimer at 20-1 odds. He is a must use at 10-1 on the morning line. CURLIN’S WISDOM finished in the money all three times, spanning three distances, when he didn’t have a trouble line as he did last out on the turf. Trainer Linda Rice also sends out first-time starter NYSHARES, whose dam, May Shares, was 2-3 and a stakes winner on the grass. CONQUIST appeared headed to victory in a longer turf route but drifted late and got caught.

          Suggested 50-cent Ticket

          SAR 7th Race: 1, 7, 9, 10
          SAR 8th Race: 4
          SAR 9th Race: ALL
          SAR 10th Race: 1, 4, 6, 8

          COST: $80

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts
            PURCHASE

            Bar

            Delaware Park - Race #3 - Post: 1:30pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 79

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

            #6 PAPA JIMMY (ML=8/1)
            #9 KARNAK (ML=4/1)
            #10 SIMMS (ML=8/1)

PAPA JIMMY - Looking at the information on all of these thoroughbreds, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a good look at this horse. This pony coming off a solid effort in the last thirty days is a strong challenger in my opinion. Trainer Bray moves this horse down the ladder based on class rating points to face weaker company. Look for a solid performance in here. This gelding's last rating recorded on Aug 20th is in the top spot in last race speed figures. Last out on the sod, this equine was strong. Anything close in this race, and this one should win. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figures (45-70-84) make this thoroughbred a powerful contender. KARNAK - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This colt's last workout was second fastest of the day for the distance. Solid average class rating on this horse. Should have the capability to run well on the turf. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track in the last race. Under normal track conditions, has a shot today. SIMMS - This gelding should give a strong account of himself in today's event.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #12 CRAZY ODDS (ML=5/1), #11 LINDROS (ML=6/1),

CRAZY ODDS - Ran well to finish fourth on Aug 6th, but hasn't had even a work since then. LINDROS - Didn't finish in the money on July 1st at Monmouth Park. Followed it up with another less than stellar effort. Improbable that the speed rating he notched on August 21st will be enough in this race.

What You Need to Know - Saratoga | Friday, September 2, 2022

              by Jeff Siegel

              SARATOGA SPOTLIGHT RACES:

Sixth Race – Post: 3:21 ET
              Top Pick: 5-Banterra (3-1)

Two-year-old maiden returns for a barn that hits with a strong 23% with second timers, so we’re expecting this Steve Asmussen-trained state-bred filly to produce enough of a forward move to earn her diploma in what looks to be an average race for the level. Second, beaten six lengths by Miracle (subsequently stakes-placed), the daughter of Practical Joke shows four nice breezes since raced, switches to Flavian Prat, and should be capable of producing a winning late kick. At 3-1 on the morning line, she deserves strong consideration in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

              Eighth Race: Post: 5:05 ET
              Top Pick: 4-Dancing Buck (6-1)

In an abbreviated turf sprint for older horses that projects to have a soft early pace, this veteran gelding appears to have found a proper spot to spring a mild surprise. The son of War Dancer is moving up in class following a pair of sharp wins and may be capable of winning this year’s edition of the Lucky Coin Stakes if he can secure a forward position – perhaps even on the lead – and then fight off the late runners. Fresh from earning a career top speed figure, the Michelle Nevin-trained gelding really won’t have to improve much at all to extend his streak, so at 6-1 on the morning line he offers a reasonable gamble in the win pool and in rolling exotic play. 1-Big Package and 3-Proven Strategies can offer late threats off their best performances and worth including somewhere on your ticket.
              *

              SARATOGA RECOMMENDED ROLLING EXOTIC STRATEGIES:

              (Races 1-5)
              1st race: 9-You’re My Girl; 5-Boy Is She a Lady; 6-Mim; 1-My Sweet Summer
              2nd race: 3-Mail Order; 5-Mischievous Dream; 6-Ellanation
              3rd race: 3-Tiz a Giant; 1-Good Medicine
              4th race: 8-Mosienko; 4-Khali Magic
              5th race: 1-Eylara; 6-Classic Colors; 4-Control Function

              (Races 6-10)
              6th race: 5-Banterra
              7th race: 5-Topic Changer; 3-Fieldstone
              8th race: 4-Dancing Buck; 1-Big Package; 3-Proven Strategies
              9th race: 6-Angitude; 9-Smash Ticket; 10-Union Lake
              10th race: 6-Conquist; 8-Curlin’s Wisdom; 9-Dreampoint

              SARATOGA WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:

              FIRST RACE:

              Mim (August 28, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02.2b). Grade: B-
Breezing throughout and slightly best outside Binsky (same time) for L. Rice, eager in the final furlong while not being let run, final quarter mile in :24.4. Hard to gauge how much sprint speed she has but looks to have at least some ability and should be more than fit by now.
              View Workout Video

              __________________________________________________ ____________________________
              __________________________________________________ ____________________________

              FIFTH RACE:

Ensemble (August 19, Saratoga, 5f, 1:02.2b TT TC DU). Grade: B-
Asked and ridden through the lane but went well enough for B. Walsh in solo training track turf drill while far outside around dogs. Probably has some improvement in her, might be most effective if held up early and allowed to run late.
              View Workout Video

              Control Function (August 26, Saratoga, 4f, :50.1b). Grade: B+
Was sharp in easy main track breeze while much best over Santa Giulia (same time) for C. Brown able to go faster if permitted. Lightly raced filly returns after several months on the sidelines, looks better now than in the winter.
              View Workout Video

Transient (August 14, Saratoga, 4f, :50.2b TT TC DU). Grade: B-
Just galloping in solo breeze around dogs on training track turf course for S. Joseph, Jr., final quarter in :24.4 looking fine. Main concern was that she never switched leads. Been away since last November, seems fit, was a once-paced stayer last year.
              View Workout Video

              Santa Giulia (August 26, Saratoga, 4f, :50.1b). Grade: C+
Clearly second best behind Control Function (same time), finishing more than a length behind under light coaxing (workmate hard held, never allowed to show speed), fair to moderate for C, Brown, final quarter in :25.3. Doesn’t act like a dirt horse. Hard to get excited about.
              View Workout Video

              SIXTH RACE:

              Stonewall Star (August 26, Saratoga, 4f, :49.3b). Grade: B-
Maybe slightly second best inside Red Butterfly (same time), final quarter in :25 flat, not really asked much but not showing a whole lot of spark, either. Probably would prefer to see one first based on this drill.
              View Workout Video

              Banterra (August 22, Saratoga, 5f, 1:03b TT). Grade: B-
Always breezing while stride-for-stride outside Powerful (same time) for S. Asmussen, final quarter in :24.4 looking good and eager. Beautiful mover by Practical Joke was a beaten favorite in her debut in late July but it would be surprising if she doesn’t improve off that effort. Not a particularly quick sort, should improve as the distances increase.
              View Workout Video

Pretty Miss Keens (August 25, Saratoga, 4f, :49.3bg). Grade: B-
In blinkers, solo gate work for G. Weaver, broke sharply and was ridden a bit most of the way in steady move looking okay while gearing up for debut. No world beater but appears to have some run and may be competitive in moderate state-bred company.
              View Workout Video

              Security Code (August 21, Saratoga, 4f, :49.1b). Grade: B
Broke off a few lengths behind Wave Action (4f, :49.4b) and was asked to close the up gap through the stretch while under pressure but made little headway (workmate breezing), final quarter in a moderate :25.1. Certainly was hoping for better after promising debut run.
              View Workout Video

              __________________________________________________ ____________________________
              __________________________________________________ ____________________________

              NINTH RACE:

Wicked Halo (August 22, Saratoga, 4f, :49.2b TT). Grade: B-
Was asked a bit through the lane in solo training track drill for S. Asmussen, final quarter in :24.3, okay move, not great. Freshened since early July, expected a bit sharper move.
              View Workout Video

              Angitude (August 20, Saratoga, 5f, 1:00.4b). Grade: B+
Broke off a few lengths in front of high class Cyberknife (5f, 1:00b) and wound up more than a length back at the wire but was under strong restraint every step of the way and actually looked very good, final quarter mile in 24.3 (returned to breeze a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 flat the following week). Has plenty of speed and probably is most comfortable sprinting. Ready to produce a forward move for B. Cox.
              View Workout Video

              Union Lake (August 21, Saratoga, 5f, 1:00.3b). Grade: B
Slightly best inside Pinehurst (same time) for J. Terranova, not really asked much, final quarter in a sharp :23.4, strong throughout. Looks to be improving with each race and work. Tough on the raise.

              TENTH RACE:

Nyshares (August 12, Saratoga, 4f, :50.2b TT TC DU). Grade: B-
Niggled through the lane outside Feathers Road (same time) and was slightly second best, fair to moderate for Linda Rice. Not a speed type, for sure. May have a small look vs. soft New York-bred foes.
              View Workout Video

              Conquist (August 19, Saratoga, 5f, 1:01b). Grade: B
Ridden in the closing stages to draw clear from Abundant Honor (5f, 1:01.2b) for J. Kimmel, okay drill for daughter of Nyquist, final quarter mile in :25.1. Seems about the same.

What You Need to Know - Del Mar | Friday, September 2, 2022

                by Jeff Siegel

                DEL MAR SPOTLIGHT RACES:

                Seventh Race: Post: 6:01 PT
                Top Pick: 8-Thorne House (7/2)

Although he’s stepping up in class into the first level allowance ranks, this lightly raced but talented California-bred gelding should be capable of winning on the raise based on speed figures, upside, and sharp breeze over this track since raced. He exits a productive race, has enough tactical speed to be on or near the lead, and offers a square price at 7/2 on the morning line. We like him in the win pool and will hook him up in exactas and trifectas with 9-Curry (away since March of 2021 but returns protected and with numbers that make him dangerous) and 10-The Little H Man (proper style for this extended sprint trip and from the red hot Andy Mathis barn).

Fifth Race – Post: 4:03 PT
                Top Pick: 4-Connie Swingle (5/2)

The state-bred daughter of Grazen was far below her best form when a distant third in the Fleet Treat Stakes in late July but that race was contested over the main track, and she is much more comfortable on grass. With the return to the turf today in this three-other-than allowance sprint, she should be capable of reproducing her winning form, so at 5/2 on the morning line she’s a strong play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. The one she must fear is her Phil D’Amato-trained stablemate, 8-Leggs Galore. A two-time winner over the local lawn and successful in nine of 16 career starts, she clearly has the resume to win at this level and is the deserving 6/5 morning line favorite. We’re not convinced she’s quite as good now as she has been in the past – and perhaps that makes her vulnerable – but if she fires her shot the veteran daughter of Bayern will be hard to beat.

                *

DEL MAR RECOMMENDED ROLLING EXOTIC STRATEGIES:

                (Races 1-4)
1st race: 2-M Is for Magic; 3-Crimson Rose; 4-Tiger Spice
                2nd race: 8-Funkhouser; 6-Otter Pop
                3rd race: 6-Carmelita’s Man; 3-Win the Day
                4th race: 8-Hero Status; 1-Piroli

                (Races 5-9)
                5th race: 4-Empire Pass; 2-Loma Vista; 1-Keepmeinthe Moment
                6th race: 5-See Through It
                7th race: 8-Thorne House; 9-Curry; 10-The Little H Man
                8th race: 4-Connie Swingle; 8-Leggs Galore
                9th race: 2-Squillions; 9-Very Scary; 10-Acoustic Shadow

DEL MAR WORKOUT ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY:

                FIRST RACE:

Tiger Spice (August 18, Del Mar, 4f, :46h). Grade: B+
Ridden through the lane and responded very well, final quarter mile in a sharp :23.2 for A. Mathis. Won debut cleverly in a maiden claimer and should be competitive right back vs. starter’s allowance company.

                SECOND RACE:

Fast Investment (August 13, Del Mar, 4f, :49.1hg). Grade: C+
Off a bit awkwardly and was green early, finally got straightened away after the opening quarter and then wasn’t asked much while in company with American Empire (5f, 1:03.1hg), not really asked much, splits of :36.2 and :49.1 on our watches. Not the worst but needs experience and soft maiden claimers.

                THIRD RACE:

Win the Day (August 26, Del Mar, 5f, 1:01.2h). Grade: B
Tied in with Pyeong Chang (5f, 1:00h, already moving) and opened up on that one through the lane in good style while continuing out to seven furlong pole with something left, mild late urging. Maintains his form, should handle a marathon trip.

                FOURTH RACE:

                Piroli (August 26, Del Mar, 5f, 1:00.1h). Grade: B
In company inside Red Tiara (4f, :48.4h) and was always going the better of the two before continuing out well to the seven furlong pole while being ridden out with something left. Looks good, coming back better than he left as a first time gelding for M. McCarthy.

                EIGHTH RACE:

Connie Swingle (August 28, Del Mar, 4f, :47.4h TC DU). Grade: B
Never really asked while breezing around dogs outside Coulthard (same time), maybe a neck back at the wire but doing it well enough for P. D’Amato, plenty left late. Will greatly appreciate the return to the grass in the afternoon.

Race 2 - Maiden Claiming - 8.3f on the Dirt. Purse: $18000 Class Rating: 64

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 N Y FANCY 9/2
                  # 1 WAR IN PARADISE 4/1
                  # 3 TO THE TUNE 8/5
My pick in this contest is N Y FANCY. Garnered a sound Equibase Speed Fig in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this race. Is tough not to look at given the company run in lately. Dini and Rowland have a good win percent together. WAR IN PARADISE - Gonzalez has one of the top winning percentages in this group with entries running at this distance and surface. TO THE TUNE - Has run admirably when racing a dirt route race. Ought to go to the lead and might never look back.

                    # 6 QUEEN KRISTAL 15/1
                    # 3 KEONI'S GIRL 3/1
                    # 1 DULCE MELODIA 5/1
I favor QUEEN KRISTAL in this event especially at a such a nice price. Has a sharp shot in here if you like back class. Ought to be considered a solid contender on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. This horse has some longshot angles going for her. DULCE MELODIA - She looks competitive in this spot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the midpoint.

                      Woodbine - Race #3 - Post: 2:04pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,000 Class Rating: 67

                      Rating:

                      #1 SOCIAL JUSTICE (ML=7/2)
                      #4 LILNMIGHTY (ML=6/1)

SOCIAL JUSTICE - I like this gelding. Has the highest earnings per race in this contest. LILNMIGHTY - Adding blinkers often leads to a better race on the racetrack. Was in a $10,000 Maiden Claiming race at Woodbine last race out. That event had a class number of 73 and he is moving down right here. A certain solid contender. Have to forget about that last race on the grass. This gelding should do better hitting the dirt right here in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BROKE AN BROKEN (ML=5/2), #7 TWO YEAR CONTRACT (ML=3/1), #8 CANT GLIDE BY KATZ (ML=8/1),

BROKE AN BROKEN - Would be taking an underlay on this horse at the likely odds of 5/2. TWO YEAR CONTRACT - This steed hasn't been near the victor at the finish line lately. CANT GLIDE BY KATZ - This pony hasn't been close to the winner at the wire lately. Unlikely that the speed rating he notched on July 31st will be good enough in this affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 SOCIAL JUSTICE to win if we can get at least 8/5 odds
