1^st race [Md Sp Wt 105000, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (8) General Jim was third in his debut on the dirt for Shug McGaughey. The $850,000 yearling purchase shows two recent turf works at Saratoga as he stretches out and changes surfaces. (3) Ari Gold will make his debut for Todd Pletcher and Eclipse Thoroughbreds. (4) Please Baby moved from dirt to turf, added blinkers, and finished third after getting bumped around a bit. (2) Fly Right will make his first start for trainer Leah Gyarmati who has some gaudy numbers with her debut runners and 2-year-olds in general.
2^nd race [Md Sp Wt 105000, 7F] – (7) Powerful (B) was sent off as the favorite in his first start for Steve Asmussen at Saratoga when he ran a stalking trip and missed by just a head. (8) Upgrade got off a step slowly in his debut for Todd Pletcher at odds of 5-1 and finished third. (1) Full Moon Madness was third in the kickoff to his career for a home-bred son of Into Mischief from Jay Em Ess Stable and Michelle Nevin. (2) Tapit’s Conquest comes from the Brad Cox barn who was waiting for the track at Saratoga to get a bit tighter to start his best 2-year-olds and now this son of Tapit gets to go seven furlongs.
3^rd race [Alw 115000 N1X, 1 mi] – (4) Tiwanaku set the pace and was third behind Keepmeinmind who was making his first start for Todd Pletcher. Before that, Tiwanaku won a starter allowance and a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs where he was taken by Tom Amoss for $50,000. He has been facing strong fields in Kentucky and New York. (3) Seal Beach tried the turf and did not like it after breaking his maiden going seven furlongs at Churchill for Mike Maker. (6) Up to the Mark was an easy winner in his debut on a sloppy track at Saratoga for Pletcher as the odds-on favorite coming from the ownership team of Repole and St. Elias Stables. (5) Strong Quality returns from a March layoff when he started his career at Fair Grounds for Mark Casse with three races including a maiden in his second start and then an allowance second.
4^th race [Saranac (G3), 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (3) Annapolis has three wins and a pair of seconds in five career starts for Pletcher. He won the Pligrim (G2) last year and the Manila this year at Belmont Park. He broke his maiden at the Spa as a juvenile and was second behind the outstanding European runner Nations Pride in the Saratoga Derby (G1). (5) Fuerteventura is a turf horse and gets back on the grass where he broke his maiden and won the Jersey Derby. (1) Celestial City gets blinkers on after running third in the Hall of Fame (G2) for Shug McGaughey. (2) Piqua ships in from Fair Hills for Graham Motion after a late rally to finish third, beaten just a length, just three weeks ago at Saratoga.

1st race – (12) It Wasn’t Me debuts for Cox and seems capable of a winning effort. (8) Yanira makes her first start for Ward and cannot be ignored. (4) Botanical is another Cox firster who is showing promise. (3) Weehawken could be well-meant on turf. Betting strategy: 12 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-8-12. Doubles: 3-4-8-12 with 2-4-6-10.
2nd race – (10) Derivative had a troubled start while finishing fifth after being sidelined for more than a year. Should benefit from that try and prevail here. (4) Monjid could make his presence felt in his debut. (6) Truly Mischief should be a stretch threat in this field. (2) Rum ‘n Tonic might appreciate a return to turf. Betting strategy: 10 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6-10.
4th race – (8) Six Missions rallied nicely for second in his debut and should roll to victory here. (7) Swiss Guard should be well-suited by turf. (6) B Minor could hit a high note in this field. (5) Miranda Rights could be hard to catch in this field. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-7-8.
7th race – (8) Callie’s Grit was a good second in her debut and should move forward in stakes company. (6) Chop Chop was a sharp debut winner who cannot be overlooked. (4) Knockyoursocksoff will be dangerous on her best try. (5) Towhead had a win wiped out by a starting gate snafu but has the potential to be a factor here. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-6-8.
10th race – (7) Kentucky Ghost drops out of a grade 1 stakes and should enjoy the cutback in distance to a mile. (9) Atone missed by a head last time and looks like the one to fear. (6) Mr Dumas belongs in the exotics after finishing in the money in his last eight tries. (3) Pixelate had a useful prep and should be a major threat. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-6-7-9.

Analysis and top contenders:
Trying to hit with another horse in the 8/1 range as we did last week with Laurel River in the Pat O’Brien Stakes, we’ll start with Gray’s Fable (4) in this really interesting race at a mile on the European style course at Kentucky Downs. He’s one of three horses coming out of the same race, the Evan Williams Turf Mile Stakes at Ellis Park on August 7, which serves as a prep for this race. In that race, Gray’s Fable was on the rail in traffic at the eighth pole, forced to steady, then found a seam and came to the two path to surge to the front by a neck at the wire. Jockey Michel rode the gelding beautifully and rides back and the 111 Equibase Speed Figure, which tied his previous career best from the Opening Verse Stakes in May at Churchill Downs (also at a mile) was rock solid against the others in this race. The fact he had trouble and still won is a testament to his mental toughness so opening at 8/1 he gets top billing here.
Still, Tut’s Revenge (1) and Mr Dumas (6), who finished third and second, respectively, in that photo, must be considered. If not for the fact we have a fairly evenly matched group of nine here we would not be getting potential value on these two either, who open at 8/1 and 6/1. Tut’s Revenge was returning on two weeks rest after another near miss in a stakes and fires nearly every time he runs, resulting in a career record of 11-7-8 in 38 races. Cheminaud gets on and that’s fine as this French jockey likely will find the dips and rises as well as the sweeping turns to his liking in the same way French jockey Michel (aboard Gray’s Fable) will.
Mr. Dumas did nothing wrong in the Evan Williams Turf mile when rallying strongly from 10^th with a quarter mile to go to miss by a neck. He won the similar Mystic Lake Mile prior to that and has never missed the board in six races this year. His 112 and 110 last two figures stack up well with the other two and it could be a tossup who wins, but with all three offering value there’s money to be won in the exacta using all three.
For some exacta tickets we should toss in Pixelate (3) who won this race last year off a third place finish and enters the race off a third place effort again but his last two figures of 102 and 100 are a bit short of what it’s going to take to win if any of the top three repeat their last efforts. Kentucky Ghost (7) and Atone (9) are worth noting as well. Kentucky Ghost was second in the TVG Stakes at Kentucky Downs last September and won a stakes one before last but was overmatched in the Grade 1 United Nations in July. Atone was scratched out of an easier spot on Thursday to go here and missed by two noses last out in a big effort at Saratoga.

Win bets:
Gray’s Fable (4) and Tut’s Revenge (1) should both be considered for win bets at 3 to 1 or more.
Mr Dumas (6) also has 3 to 1 fair odds but opens lower and we want to bet the two of the three which are the highest odds near post time so what’s why Gray’s Fable and Tut’s Revenge are listed as the potential win bets.
