2^nd race – (2) Dream a Dream had a useful debut performance and should move forward here. (7) Cuban Crisis put in a nice gate work for this and could be the one to fear. Pimlico Late Pick 4 Analysis Friday, Sept. 9, 2022

Live racing returns to Pimlico for the first time since May with a nine-race afternoon card this Friday. A pair of $48,000 allowance races, one on the dirt and one on the turf, are part of the 50-cent Late Pick 4 sequence that looks this way:

PIM 6th race (3:25 EST) -- CARIBBEAN will take some catching despite carrying co-high weight of 126 pounds at 1-1/8 miles. He chased speedy Uncle Irish (15/3-3-3, $165k) and tired at one mile last out before the winner passed by both of them and the third-place finisher, Iywaan, came back to win for the fifth time in his last seven starts. CARIBBEAN worked two bullets since that race and is today’s solo play.

PIM 7th race (3:58 EST) -- Going five-deep in this leg of the Pick 4 as a field of 12 Maryland bred or sired horses go one mile on the turf. CONSULTANT, the top pick, enters the barn of Bob Klesaris, who won first-off-the-claim at Belmont and Saratoga from the last six turf horses he claimed. Consultant, whose dam was a turf stakes winner, raced wide on both turns and dueled to stretch lead before a pair of deep closing longshots caught him last out. KOBE TOUGH switches jockeys for the sixth consecutive start and could take some catching in his first long-distance test after facing the likes of $314k turf earner Strike Me Down and Dancing Buck (4-9, $237k on turf). SUE LOVES BARBADOS set the pace in a turf-to-dirt race at this distance and has since rallied for two seconds and a third sprinting on the lawn. BENNY HAVENS rallied 4-wide to engage repeat winner POWER BACK but hung late when they met at Laurel in a longer grass route this summer.

PIM 8th race (4:31 EST) -- DREAM BIG DREAMS tries to bounce back as a first-time gelding after a dull comeback try as the beaten favorite. He could be the one to beat but is too risky to solo on the Pick 4 ticket. Similarly, SEVEN ON THE ROCKS will take some catching as he tries to carry over his solid main-track sprint form; however, he hasn’t gone beyond 7F in the last 3 years. If neither wins, WELLING could upstage a series of in-the-money finishes, BADGER TOOTH could three-peat, or VINNY could return a quick claim dividend off a lifetime-best romp against lesser. Go five-deep in this leg also.

PIM 9th race (5:04 EST) – LITTLE MS SCARLET finished no better than fifth, beaten a combined 60 lengths on the turf when she was a maiden. But she merits a longer look off her recent form. She rallied to foil 3-to-5 favorite Brunella’s three-peat attempt two starts ago and rallied again to finish third against hard-hitting Wedontbelieveher (8-32, $213k), who was in the midst of a 4-for-5 winning streak. WILLOW MOON set a fast pace and tired in the final 1/8th at this distance, but she did so at the expense of Woodbine invader Afandi, who came back with a repeat victory and has won five consecutive grass sprints at 5 or 5-1/2F. TIZ SUSAN ANN raced extremely wide throughout and trailed until early stretch before gaining ground late and finishing 2 lengths behind the aforementioned Afandi. If she can stay in closer contact, she could mount a contending rally with a better post.

If you’re in the area, get yourself to Cannon Park on Friday and Saturday, or at least book it in for next year, because the Cairns Amateurs Carnival is arguably the best in Australia. It all kicks off on Friday with an eight-race program, and HorseBetting has you covered with best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting. Cairns has really turned it on, with the rail in the true position and the track rated a Soft 5, so a terrific day of racing is on the cards. The action gets underway at 12:27pm AEST.
Best Bet at Cairns – Bank Bank Bank

Maybe we’re getting carried away, but Bank Bank Bank looks like a Listed victory wouldn’t be out of reach. The Ricky Ludwig-trained four-year-old has been terrific winning his past four starts, going from a maiden to a Class 3 win on Townsville Cup Day last start. The combined winning margin of those four wins is 12 lengths, so he has been doing it comfortably and he has had to overcome so horror barriers. With a little over a month since his last start, Bank Bank Bank should appreciate the drop back to 1250m, while barrier three is going to allow Frank Edwards to take up the running, cruise at a high speed and then skip away. This is his toughest test to date, but he should be too classy once again.

Next Best at Cairns – Indictment

Indictment’s last-start victory at this track over 1250m had to be seen to believe, but it gave every indication that he would be even better over 1400m. The Stephen Massingham-trained five-year-old carried 62kg to victory that day, so he should enjoy the drop to 59.5kg, with Nathan Day retaining the ride in the saddle. In three North Queensland starts, the son of Street Boss hasn’t been out of the top three, while his previous form in Victoria was very solid, placing in Listed company at Flemington in April 2020. He looks to be a clear standout in this.

Best Value at Cairns – Ten Schilling

Five-year-old gelding Ten Schilling has only had two starts, but he looks to have plenty of ability based on what we’ve seen. Alwyn Bailey trains the son of Artie Schiller who bolted in in maiden company back in May at this track over 1400m. While we haven’t seen him since at the races or at the trials, he finds the right sort of race to suggest he will go close to winning. From barrier five, Shane Pawsey will take Ten Schillings forward for the 1250m contest and he should take some running down.

Perfect conditions are set to greet punters, with the track rated a Good 4 and the rail out 4m from the 800m-400m and true the remainder, meaning there will be no excuses for fancied runners on the day.

Coming off a narrow defeat The Valley and Flemington in recent times, the Patrick Payne-trained Sixbysixtythree looks perfectly placed when he steps out in the penultimate race of the day. The five-year-old gelding gains the services of Harry Coffey and despite needing to lug 60kg on his back, this bloke may just have bit too much class for this field. From barrier 10, look for Coffey to try and settle this bloke in the first half a dozen with cover and if they are afforded such luxury, it will take him a long way into a race like this. He has four wins from five starts when starting as favourite and three wins from five starts on firmer decks which suggests he should prove too good. The $2.70 on offer with some online betting sites looks to be a perfect bank builder ahead of a Group 1 weekend of racing.

Formidable trainer/jockey combo of Patrick Payne & Dean Yendall will be looking to bring up an overdue maiden victory with Mira Flores. The four-year-old mare has finished second at her first two career starts when chasing home the smart El Rocko at Ballarat and then the impressive Only Need Time. This looks to be a touch easier on Friday and the fact she stays at the 1200m suggests this might just be a race perfectly set up for her. She draws to gain the perfect run in transit from barrier three in either the one-one of three pairs back in the moving line. Mira Flores is armed enough with a strong enough turn of foot to be taking out a race like this and it might just be the confidence builder she requires to go on with the job from this point forward.

In the opening leg of the quaddie, the Declan Maher-trained Winsome Voyage looks to present great value. The six-year-old gelding could not go with the leaders in his last start at Sandown where every favour went the eventual quinella’s way, but the run suggested he would be hard to beat wherever he went next. He returns to Swan Hill, a track he has a strong affiliation with having won both of his starts at the track, including one at the 1600m which he faces on Friday. With speed drawn on either side, he draws to gain a perfect cart across the front of the field and as long as he does not get trapped wide throughout, the $13 with online Bookmakers looks overs for a runner like Winsome Voyage based on his recent form.
