Total Trends

L.A. Chargers at Kansas City: The Chargers grinded out a 24-19 win against the Las Vegas Raiders last week at SoFi Stadium as the UNDER comfortably covered. The Chargers, who were an offensive machine last season at times, managed just 76 rushing yards on 31 carries while posting 279 yards through the air. It also had 18 total first downs to 18 for the Raiders. Defense surprisingly ruled the day on the fast track in that AFC West battle.

The Chiefs didn't encounter a lot of defense and/or resistance in their opening game road win against the Arizona Cardinals. QB Patrick Mahomes hit four different received for a total of five passing touchdowns, as the Kansas City offense was as well-oiled machine in the desert. The defense did a good job against the Cards in the 44-21 win, with 14 of the points allowed coming in the fourth quarter.

Last season, the OVER cashed in the mid-December meeting between these teams in Los Angeles, while the UNDER narrowly cashed in the late September meeting in Arrowhead. The OVER is 3-1 in the past four meetings in Kansas City, though, and we had a total of 54 points last season against a number of 55, so it wasn't exactly a defensive slog.

The Bolts have cashed the OVER in four of their final five road games in 2021. The OVER is also 8-1 in the past nine overall for the Chiefs dating back to last season, while hitting in four of the past five as a home favorite, four of the past five against the AFC West and 18 of the past 25 in the month of September.

2nd race – (4) Tap Dancing Lady was second and third in her last two starts and seems overdue for a victory. (3) Temper Time may respond to the class drop with a big effort for Romans. (6) Powder River has been second or third in her last six starts and belongs in the exotics. (2) Smarmy should turn in a better effort on dirt. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4. Exactas: 3-4 over 2-6 and 2-6 over 3-4. Doubles: 2-3-4-6 with 2-3-6-8. Pick 3: 2-3-4-6 with 2-3-6-8 with 2-6-9-10.
3rd race – (8) One for Richie has plenty of early speed and may not look back here. (2) All West gets back on dirt and should be the main rival. (3) Totalizer drops out of stakes company and fits better here. (6) Big Sport will be part of the early pace and could hang on for a share. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8. Doubles: 2-3-6-8 with 2-3-9-10.
4th race – (6) Insolito has not raced since January but drops into a claimer for the first time and has a class edge over these. (10) Lucky Smile debuts for Pletcher and should not be ignored. (2) Constitutional Law might wake up in a claimer. (9) Scratchoff should respond to a class drop. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-6-9-10.
7th race – (1) Gun It likes this racetrack and can work out a winning trip from the rail. (3) Hidden Scroll has plenty of back class and could be a factor here. (10) Major Fed should appreciate a turnback to a sprint. (4) Surveillance might be a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-10. Doubles: 1-3-4-10 with 2-6-7-8.
8th race – (8) Supertaleofhoudini gets back on dirt and should thrive at this reduced level. (6) Pappysaysyes hasn’t raced since April but is working nicely for her comeback. (2) Ipsum Gratus drops to a level where he should be top threat. (7) Cycologist fits in nicely with this field. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-6-7-8.

5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F] – (6) Jester’s Song (C) returns from a June layoff when he was bet down from 7-1 to 5-1 and finished second in a strong maiden field at Belmont Park. Now he is back to Aqueduct where he ran well three times. (4) Actualize was last seen in the race with the Hot List horse and is projected to be the pace setter in this field. (5) Lupo’s Legacy made his debut at Saratoga on the turf and moves to the main track which is a 32% winning move for Jeremiah Englehart. (1) Sul Pharoah tried the turf at Saratoga for Bill Mott and goes back to the dirt in his third start following a layoff.
6^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 1/16 mi TURF] – (10) Sweet Blush (A) had pre-race gate issues in her Saratoga debut, then broke slowly, made a strong middle move, and finished fourth at odds of 7-2. (3) Collaboration set the pace in her debut at the Spa and finished third at 4-1. Linda Rice runners usually need a race. Expect her to be on the lead. (7) Smokie Eyes was second in her first start for Christophe Clement in the same race as the second choice. (8) Orange Freeze was third in her first start at Saratoga for the Clement barn at 5-2.
8^th race [Clm 40000 N2L, 1 mi] – (8) Money Supply drops into the N2L condition for the first time for Chad Brown after winning his debut in Florida and then racing in allowances. (6) Hometown made his first start of the year after moving to the barn of Rob Atras last month at Saratoga and now drops into the claiming ranks for the first time also. (4) Emperor’s Cause skipped racing at Saratoga after getting claimed at Belmont. He shows a couple of seconds at Aqueduct in the spring. (3) Major Spin drops from the NY-bred allowances for Linda Rice and is expected to set the pace. Irad Ortiz gets on board.
9^th race [NY, Alw 85000 N$Y, 1 mi] – (1) Sweet Mystery (C) was bet down to be the favorite and pressed the pace to finish second in a state-bred allowance. She has a trio of top three finishes in her only starts. (5) Truancy was an impressive odds-on winner of her second start for Barclay Tagg at the Spa. (8) Forty Smooth steps up to this new allowance condition for NY-breds after winning three out of four starts in open company claimers. (6) Caramocha made a big improvement when she was second in a Spa allowance in her second start following a layoff.
Best bets: Jester’s Song (5^th); Money Supply (8^th). Best value: Sweet Blush (6^th); Sweet Mystery (9^th).
