The Bendigo Jockey Club is the scene for midweek racing in Victoria this week with a massive nine-race program set down for judgement. The track has come up a Heavy 9 for racing following an abundance of rain, but with decent drying conditions we may see an upgrade to a Heavy 8 at some point in the meeting. Considering the rail comes back to the true position after being out 8m last meeting, it may pay to be up on speed along the rail early on in the card. The first race is set to go at 12:30pm AEST.
Best Bet at Bendigo – Ferrari Man

With four minor placings from seven starts, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Ferrari Man will seemingly get his maiden win out of the way on Wednesday. The three-year-old gelding was out bobbed by Victoria Derby fancy Artzino over 1500m at Sandown on September 7 and the start prior chased home subsequent Flemington winner Elkington Road. He looks like he will appreciate every bit of the 1600m he gets this time round and with Jordan Childs sticking on board, the pair rate perfectly. He looks like he will gain an uncontested lead throughout over the mile and with a couple of cheap sectionals, Ferrari Man should be packing too much late for his rivals. The $2.30 with online Bookmakers looks to be a perfect bank builder early on the Bendigo card.

Next Best at Bendigo – Blow In

Having strung together impressive victories at Geelong and then Sandown last time out, the Jamie Edwards-trained Blow In looks well placed to bring up a third win in succession. Craig Williams was swinging off this bloke at the top of the Sandown straight on August 31 and when clear air appeared approaching the final furlong, this son of Fighting Sun quickened nicely and put his arrivals away with ease. This race looks to be no harder than what he disposed of in town and despite rising 2kg in the weights, he looks a class above these. One we are willing to give a big chance at a price is Perceptive from the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr yard who returns from a five-month spell. The four-year-old mare was beaten three-lengths by the smart Mac ‘N’ Cheese in the Listed Clare Lindop Stakes in March and finished on the heels of the placegetters in the Listed Nitschke Stakes at his last start before heading to the paddock. He has trialled on a Heavy 10 in preparation for this first-up assignment, so we expect he will be raring to go upon resumption. From barrier two, look for Blaike McDougall to use the low draw to his advantage, hold the rail and have his rivals chasing a long way out from home. The $10 on offer with some online betting sites looks to be too good a price to pass up on Perceptive.

This Wednesday we head back to Canterbury Park for another strong mid-week metropolitan seven race card. With a fair bit of rain predicted to fall on Wednesday during the meeting, we could be racing on worse than the Soft 7 rating of the track early in the week. The rail will be at 6m position for the entire circuit, with the first race kicking off at 1.25pm.
Best Bet at Canterbury – Cinderella Days

The Joseph Pride-trained Cinderella Days will head to the races for her third start, as she looks to extend her undefeated start to her career. The three-year-old filly has won both of her career starts to date, recording wins at Newcastle and Warwick Farm in May and August of this year. The daughter of Astern has shown that she can sit on or just in behind the lead in both of her wins which have come in soft and heavy conditions. With some rain forecast on Wednesday, we expect the track to deteriorate to worse than a Soft 7 and this filly will be comfortable in the wet conditions. With the aid of barrier one and Brenton Avdulla sticking, this girl should jump on the bunny and be very hard to catch over 1250m.

Next Best at Canterbury – Roots

The lethal combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald will combine in the third race of the day with Roots in a 1550m Benchmark 78. The four-year-old mare returned from a four-month spell with a very impressive win over 1300m at Warwick Farm on August 31, where she sat off the speed and flew home to win by half-a-length. Her first start showed that any extra distance next start would only be a positive. This daughter of Press Statement finished fifth in an Australasian Oaks (Group One) and sixth in the Phar Lap (Group Two) back in the Autumn, which tells us that Waller has a very big opinion of this girl. James McDonald has retained the ride for her second-up start, which is another positive, so this mare should be winning again.

Todd Howlett will be looking for his mare, Holy Tycoon, to go back-to-back in 1100m Canterbury Park races. Tommy Berry has chosen to stick with this daughter of Written Tycoon which is a positive to us, along with the already soft track that could only get worse on race day. This girl loves a wet track, with all four of her career wins coming on soft or heavy tracks. There will be good speed in this event, so if Tommy Berry can have this girl three or four lengths off the lead, we should see her flying down the outside with the last crack at them.

Hong Kong racing is back to Happy Valley today, with an 8-race card in perfect weather.

Joao Moreira returned last Sunday with just a single second placing.

Happy Valley Race 2 #6 Jumbo Fortune $3.80

Trained by Caspar Fownes and ridden by Joao Moreira, Jumbo Fortune can improve on his good first-up run at Sha Tin.

This 4YO ran an outstanding final 400m last week chasing from well back in the field to finish 4th.

He now rises to the 1650m at Happy Valley which will suit him perfectly.

At his last effort over this distance, he was only beaten 2 lengths in a race that wasn't run to suit.

The pace in this race may be slow with the only leader being Telecom Brother, however from the low draw of barrier 4, Jumbo Fortune can be much more forward himself in running.

If he breaks well and stays behind the leaders, he can storm away to win his maiden in style.

Happy Valley Race 5 #6 Island Surprise $3.80

After 10 attempts in Hong Kong, Island Surprise is able to bounce back off a career-low mark of 38 and with Zac Purton on board.

This Ricky Yiu-trained gelding finally drops to Class 5 here and as an unexposed 5YO by Sweynesse, he will be right in the thick of things.

Zac Purton rode him in the recent barrier trial on the 6th of September and judging off how he powered to the line, the horse has improved immensely from his most recent spell.

He jumps from Gate 5 tonight and he will be able to follow Happy Fat Cat to sit just off the leaders.

With the Champion Jockey on board, Island Surprise is able to show his ability and win his first race in Hong Kong.

Canterbury Racing Tips: Wednesday September 21st

Wednesday racing heads to Canterbury in Sydney for some quality midweek metro racing. We will see a strong seven race card with some promising horses on show. There is some rain forecast for race day so keep an eye on track conditions throughout the afternoon.

As usual, Billy Bestford has had a look at the meeting and has found his best bets for the day.

Canterbury Racing Tips: Wednesday September 21st
Race 2

The unbeaten (7) Cinderella Days will look to continue the winning start to her career and has been impressive in both runs to date. She was heavily backed when having her third start before being a scratching at the barriers. By all accounts she has pulled up fine and this looks a perfect stepping stone as she rises through the grades. Gets the gun inside draw and will have things her own way up in the lead.

(3) Psychiatrist is another horse who races on speed and was last seen contesting the Rosebud first up. He was found wanting there but has had a little freshen and has been competitive in better races than this. Looks a touch over the odds.

(10) Taurids dug deep to win on debut and is boosted by the booking of McDonald here at his second start. Had a little freshen up for this and draws nicely in gate 4.

(9) Insurrection should be ready third up following two good placings to begin his prep.

(6) Lady Harlem next best.

Race 5

Think 3rd up rising to 1900m looks a nice setup for (4) Akahata to break through for another win. McDonald taking the ride is a strong lead and this horse has been building nicely over shorter trips. He handles all conditions and expect he sees every chance in the run from a nice gate.

(2) Inawushi will be a strong threat and looked as good as ever when winning over this track/trip a couple of weeks ago. That was on a very heavy track so any rain today won’t hurt his chances. He is getting up in the weights now and will be spotting a few of them a start.

(6) Microna just keeps cashing the runners up cheques and is a good chance once again to be right in the finish. Puts himself into the race every start and is as honest as they come.

(5) Bacio Del Mist looks the best value chance in the race. Could be worth throwing in the exotics.

Race 6

You won’t see an easier win than that of (11) Cholante last start, winning by over a length with her ears pricked. She came from the back of the field and seemingly rounded them up without even being asked for much of an effort. It was super impressive and I think this horse could Saturday quality and maybe even better. As long as the track is playing fair, she can take the next step here.

(3) Embeller looks to get the gun run from gate 1 with Jmac on and flies fresh. She has trialled up well for her return and has a strong record over 1100m. She has been competitive in better races than this.

(1 Miss Jay Fox has been in very good form this prep and the 3kg claim for Dylan Gibbons is a big positive. The form around her when beaten less than a length in a strong 78 last start stacks up well for this.

Same goes for (4) Duchy Of Savoy who comes out of the same race and finished alongside Miss Jay Fox. Will go forward with a good claim and should be hard fit now 3rd up.

(10) Super Bright is still very lightly raced with just the four career starts. Has won two of those and should improve off the first up effort.

Siding up with the cerise and white in a really good race in the form of Noteworthy. Thought she was terrific on debut in a really hot race/form reference at Northam, unsuited at the 1000m, got right back from a wide gate, never saw daylight until passing the 200m and loved the way she got through the line late when she was able to get through her gears. 1200m here far more suitable, drawn far better in a smaller field, think she looks a really nice chance at around that $5.00 mark.

Has been very well supported in early betting, but confident Never Sober can measure up today. Comes through a really strong CL3 over this trip last start, sat handy to a very fast tempo and loved his work through the line when the winner was just able to get that softer run in transit on his back. Stalks Rare case here from the gate, Harvey sticks, and comes through what I feel is the superior form reference. The current price is of no interest, looking at mid 3s Betfair late to be getting involved.

Artie’s Jewels the main danger and is capable of running a race here at a price. Loved the 1st up effort rattling home after settling in a different postcode from a very wide alley. Johnston-Porter takes the ride, doesn’t have to get so far back and should have taken improvement from that run. That race has also more than held up as a form reference with dual subsequent winners since.

May be unfashionable, but in what looks a really messy race I’m happy to be with the horse that will be out in front rolling along keeping out of any trouble who I think brings the strongest form into the race. 3 starts ago was huge chasing a tearaway leader in breaking his maiden defeating 4 subsequent maiden winners (George Gently, Anna’s Boy, Kia Ora Jewel and Tuscan Holiday), was unsuited 2nd up dropping back to 1000m before last start rising back up to a more suitable trip at 1400m, had to do some real work early to get across from a wide gate and was only run down by Legacy Of Tara, a horse I have a very high opinion of with a space back to 3rd, I think you can follow that form with confidence. Don’t think he has to lead here if they really want to take him on with Rommel’s Jeuney and Image Of Pro, although do think with some aggression from O’Donnell from the nice draw he can hold them out and prove too tough at the finish. Real tough, grinding sort of type, trademark Ash Maley.

1st race – (4) Violent Gigi takes a big class drop and should be able to handle this field. (7) Beverly’s Charge returns to a level where she should be competitive. (1) West Warpath should be helped by a ground-saving trip. (5) Heavenly Trip could be tough to beat if she gets one. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-7. Doubles: 1-4-5-7 with 2-3-10-12.
2nd race – (2) Inspeightoftrainer could perk up with a turf to dirt switch and pull out a victory here. (10) Cortese was claimed by Maker at Del Mar and looks like the one to fear. (12) Saturn Boy was a game second in his debut and can make his presence felt here. (3) Must Be the Money could be a threat in his debut. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-10-12.
5th race – (7) She’s a Dime comes off a sharp win at Indianapolis and can make it two in a row. (6) Dontyouremember should be a stretch threat here. (2) Family Time fits in nicely with this bunch.
