Neil Morrice best bets and tips – Friday 23 September 2022

Neil Morrice shares his best bets and tips for Friday’s racing coming your way from Newmarket, Haydock Park, Worcester and Newcastle on 23 September 2022.

            by Neil Morrice

            NEWMARKET

Race 1 No7 CRYSTAL CAPRICE (Nap)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore

Frankel filly CRYSTAL CAPRICE has looked the real deal in assembling a fine hat-trick which culminated in an authoritative delivery at Ascot where there looked to be plenty more under her bonnet. She steps into Listed company with abundant confidence behind her, and can take the spoils on the way to even better things.

Race 2 Princess Royal Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Stakes (Group 3)

            No8 VOODOO QUEEN (Each Way)
Trainer: Roger Varian – Jockey: David Egan

From a stable that can do no wrong, VOODOO QUEEN represents good each way value in a race that could be more open than the betting suggests. Sea Silk Road is carded to start short, but the claims of Voodoo Queen make her an attractive alternative at a much bigger price. Having broken her maiden in the spring and then landed a Class3 handicap, she was far from disgraced when finishing five and a half lengths behind Haskoy in a Listed race at York, and the winner went on to finish second in the St Leger. It was only her fifth career start, and she should have more to offer.

Race 3 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Rockfel Stakes (Group 2)

            No12 RICH (Each Way)
Trainer: Richard Hannon – Jockey: Pat Dobbs

This trial for next year’s 1,000 Guineas can go to one of the unbeaten fillies, with RICH narrowly preferred to Commissioning. The selection, a daughter of Cracksman, displayed a good attitude when decisively landing the spoils on her Newbury introduction at the end of May. Her subsequent conspicuous absence should not deter a small each way investment on the chestnut, who works like a horse that is capable of making the big step from a maiden to a Group 2.

Race 4 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Joel Stakes ( Group 2)

            No5 POTAPOVA
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute – Jockey: Ryan Moore

Having been in the wilderness when slow starts hampered her performances on the racecourse, POTAPOVA bounced back to power up the final hill and plunder the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes at Sandown. The performance highlighted her smart finishing kick, whilst demonstrating how unfortunate she’d been not to have won on other occasions this year. Taking on males for the first time, she can give multiple scorer and likely favourite Tempus plenty to think about.
            HAYDOCK PARK

            Race 3 No8 SPEYCASTER
Trainer: Ralph Beckett – Jockey: Hector Crouch

SPEYCASTER looks like a horse that’s been waiting for easier ground, and comes here after a two and a half month lay off. By Highland Reel out of a mare by Monsun, he’s shown ability in each of just three starts this season, and probably has more to offer.

            Race 5 No8 MUTAANY (Nap)
Trainer: Charles Hills – Jockey: Dane O’Neill

Invincible Spirit colt MUTAANY takes an experience edge into this novice after hitting the crossbar for the second time in succession at Wolverhampton. Having shown he can be just as effective on turf his trainer seems to have found a perfect opportunity for him, and he will be hard to beat.

            Race 6 No9 PENTLAND HILLS
Trainer: Nicky Henderson – Jockey: Sean Levey

Henderson has a cracking record with his hurdlers that are campaigned in long distance handicaps on the Flat. PENTLAND HILLS could be a case in point, even though he hasn’t been seen in racecourse action for two and a half years. That was when he put in a mid division finish behind stablemate Epatante in the Champion Hurdle, while the previous season he had taken out the Triumph Hurdle at the same meeting. With some training issues behind him, he’s competing off what could be a favourable mark.

            Race 7 No3 CUMULONIMBUS
Trainer: Charlie Fellowes – Jockey: Mark Winn

CUMULONIMBUS did us a good turn when landing a gamble at Yarmouth after which the gelding has his tail up. Under a 6lb penalty and with a top apprentice in the saddle, he can produce another dominating display, and follow-up.
            WORCESTER

            Race 2 No5 PRINCESS MIDNIGHT
Trainer: Joe Tizzard – Jockey: Brendan Powell

Getting weight from her foes in this mares’ handicap chase, PRINCESS MIDNIGHT can add to her excellent record at this track where in three outings this summer she’s twice prevailed and finished third on the other occasion. Her track craft can give the edge over top weight Anightinlambourn.

Race 4 No10 SPANISH PRESENT (Nap)
Trainer: Martin Keighley – Jockey: Sean Bowen

SPANISH PRESENT is on a retrieval mission coming back from a more than four months break since he was turned over as a 4-6 shot at Kelso. He can be forgiven that lapse on a first run over hurdles, and on the strength of his bumper form can prove too strong for Everyonesgame.
            NEWCASTLE

            Race 4 No4 MAASAI MARA
Trainer: John Gosden – Jockey: Cieren Fallon

MAASAI MARA ran into the smart Glenfannan at Yarmouth when he was the only one that tested the winner. The son of rookie sire Roaring Lion finds himself in an equally competitive affair, but if showing further progression should open his account.

            Race 8 No5 BOND POWER
Trainer: Bryan Smart – Jockey: Paul Mulrennan

BOND POWER opened his account around this time last year, and run creditably without adding to his laurels in seven subsequent outings. He ran well to a point on his only run on the all-weather which was at this course last month, and might have learned enough from that to earn now dropped two rungs down the ladder into a Class5.

            Place Accumulator Perm (Races 2-8)

            6, 3 x 6, 1, 2 x 4 x 4, 6 x 1, 2 x 4, 2 x 5, 9, 6, 11

            R188

            Jackpot Perm (Races 5-8)

            4, 6, 2 x 1, 2, 4, 5 x 4, 2, 3 x 5, 9, 6, 11, 8

            R180

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 23)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday where there is an eight-race card from 12:50 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

                Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens in the opener and (1) BUDDY BUDDY will be hot favourite. He was an on-pace 3rd on debut in August 7th in a fair time and won’t need to have come on much for that in order to win here. (6) SOLEDAD has raced twice previously, settling back and running on for 4th and 5th placed finishes in decent times. A similar run here will put her in the finish. There are two first-time starters and (8) YEOSU FIGHTER led for much of the way around in his trial, ultimately crossing the line in 2nd place. He can be on pace here and if he can bring that trial form to the races, he can go close. The other debut-maker is (5) I WILL THE STAR and he trialed up fairly too, participating in two heats with positive results. As for the others with experience, (4) PEGACORN looks the most likely to improve.

More juvenile maidens, this time with four of the eight racing for the first time. We’ll side with experience though and the likely favourite (5) SOUTHERN JOY. After a positive trial, she ran 3rd on debut on August 28th, sitting handy throughout. She should be on pace here too and with some natural improvement from that run, could be hard to hold out. Among the first-timers, (2) BEST DUO won a trial when leading throughout. It wasn’t especially fast but he wasn’t asked to do too much and has every chance of a bold showing first up here. (7) BARAMBARAM trialed fairly enough and the jockey/trainer combination ensures he’ll get plenty of backing. (3) WONDERFUL ANDOVER and (1) NINE FORCE ONE are others with experience who can improve.

                (2) SUNSHINE STAR beat three of these on his way to 2nd place over 1400M on September 2nd. He was a long way behind a good winner that day but has a 3rd place to his name over this distance and from a good draw, looks very much the one to beat here. (10) DOCTOR PENTAGON has picked up significantly in recent outings and enters here following a front-running 2nd place over 1200M on August 26th. He tackles the mile for the first time but there is no reason it can’t suit and he is the main danger to the favourite. (7) JEONGMUN CHITA was a touch disappointing on his latest appearance in August but had been hinting at ability prior to that and looks worth another chance in this company. (1) MEOTJIN HARU and (4) AGAIN HELEN are other sin at least the placing frame.

                (8) BETELGEUSE was an impressive winner on debut in July before running 5th of eight in the Rookie Stakes over 1200M on August 28th. The step up in trip today can suit and he is the one to beat. (5) SMILEY LARRY has a 2nd place and two 3rd places from his three outings so far up to 1300M. He has achieved those both from on pace and coming from behind and he too should appreciate the extra distance. (7) S. L. KING has had an interrupted career but comes up in class having won over 1400M on August 28th when he made all. Back in the dim and distance past, he also notched a win over today’s trip and he should measure up in this company. (10) TRIPLE THUNDER and (4) FINAL FRONT are others who can go close.

                (8) CAPTAIN GOLD is yet to finish any worse than 3rd and followed up his all the way win over 1200M in July by almost repeating the trick on his first attempt at this class, ultimately finishing 2nd over 1300M on August 26th. The engagement of an apprentice takes his weight down here and he may take some beating. (11) J.S. DAY comes up in class following an all the way win of her own at start number two on September 2nd. She too is nicely weighted and while she may need a touch of luck at the start from the wide draw, if she can find a decent position, she can go close. (3) HAMPYEONG MAN comes up in class and in distance following consecutive runner-up finishes over 1000M, leading both times. He draws well to lead again, comes down in the weights, and can be in this a long way. (5) TRIPLE JILJU and (7) PEOPLE POWER are others who can enter the calculations.

A class and distance winner two starts back, (2) HAMYANGEUN SANSAM overcame gate twelve to beat a couple of today’s rivals on his way to 4th place again at class and distance on September 4th. He has to contend with the same 58kg today but he comes into a much better gate and has every chance of returning to the winner’s circle. This is a good race though with only two of the twelve having finished outside the top-five in their respective latest outings. (1) HALLOWEEN PARTY won well over 1300M at class 5 level in July before running 2nd in a fast race over 1200M at this level on August 19th. She’ll be on pace from the inside gate here and has solid claims again. (10) QUEEN ALLIE led from the gate until the closing stages at class and distance on September 2nd, ultimately finishing 2nd in a fast time. She comes up a little in the weights and draws a little wider but is very much in this. (8) HANSEN ICHEON, up in class, and (6) LINE BREAKER among plenty of others in the hunt.

Fillies and mares only here and it’s a quite a wild mix. We’ll take a chance on (4) ALPHA THOR one of the first new imports to be registered since restrictions on them were lifted. The Sharp Azteca filly fairy bolted up in trial at the start of this month and if she brings that form to the races, she will be hard to hold out. (8) UNBREAK returns to action a full forty-weeks since her debut last December. It was a very good debut as she won over this distance and she looked well when trialing up in August. If you prefer existing and recent form, then (1) GOOD SOCKS is the one. She comes up in class having made all to win over this distance on August 7th but still looks nicely in here and draws well. (10) NAMED and (12) MENI AGAIN came home 1st and 2nd when they raced one another at class and distance on August 21st and both should be in the mix once more.

Competitive race to conclude with and (7) GALLANT WARRIOR perhaps has the slight edge. He has run 3rd and 4th in two efforts at this class, both over 1800M and both times leading. He comes slightly down in trip and is well weighted under today’s handicap conditions and has every chance. (6) UNJU HERO comes up in class following a runner-up finish over this distance on August 19th when starting slowly and running on. He comes down significantly in the weights here and that should be enough to bring him into contention. (9) DOCTOR FAITH is a front-runner who has proven competitive at both class and distance including beating a couple of these last time out on his way to 4th. (2) CATCH THE SKY and (3) FLAT BABE are others to take into account.

                  RACE 2: BOSS CARA (#2)

Dame Cinco (#6) figures to go favored here as she makes her first start off the claim for Jose Camejo, who is 15 for 46 (33%, $2.89 ROI) with that move over the past 5 years. She earned a strong speed figure last time, but I didn’t love the way she was drifting through the stretch while beating an inferior group. It’s unclear if she’s as proficient sprinting as she is going longer, and there is plenty of other speed signed on. One of her main rivals is Beautiful Karen (#7), who is getting significant class relief after facing a better group of New York-bred allowance foes last time. She ran poorly in her return from the layoff, but was compromised by a stumbling start. I won’t be surprised if she fares better against this softer field for a barn that has been firing lately. My top pick is Boss Cara (#2). She also comes off a poor effort, but was badly overmatched in that open N1X allowance condition. Now she’s dropping to a realistic spot, and there’s plenty of speed signed on to set up her late run. She earned competitive speed figures against tougher company two and three back, and should be charging late if Eric Cancel can work out a trip. The price also figures to be fair given the low-profile connections.

                  RACE 4: BIG ENGINE (#8)

There is definitely some speed signed on in this New York-bred optional claimer, which certainly doesn’t hurt the chances of likely favorite Who Hoo Thats Me (#1). He seems pretty logical off his runner-up finish at this level last time, but his form is pretty exposed at this point and I’m not sure the cutback to 6 furlongs necessarily helps him. He’s somewhere in my play, but I thought others might offer better value. The two fastest early pace types in this race are drawn just outside of him. Excellent Timing (#3) held on pretty well for third behind the favorite last time, but this time he has to deal with Foolish Ghost (#2) on the front end. That Rudy Rodriguez trainee seems like a threat to wire the field. He battled on gamely last time against tougher company despite getting outrun to the lead by a classy foe. He figures to be aggressively handled from the inside and may be heading back in the right direction after a slump. Majority Partner (#6) also figures to be forwardly placed, but at least he’s drawn towards the outside. He was even more dominant than the 5-length margin would indicate last time when beating N1X foes, as he contested a very fast pace before opening up on the field. He’s moving up in class, but is in great form right now. The closer that I find most interesting is Big Engine (#8). His recent form has been a little spotty, but he showed signs of life last time, closing resolutely behind a pair of classy claiming foes. He had to put in a sub-24 final quarter to get up for third that day in what was the best performance he’s put forth since winning a race here last February. He might be turning things around for a barn that looks like it’s waking up from its Spa slump. Trevor McCarthy has ridden him well in the past and retains the mount.

                  RACE 7: CONSTITUTIONLAWYER (#5)

Chad Brown trainee Orchestration (#7) is the one to beat as he makes his second start off the layoff. He was finishing well at this level last time and I’ve always thought he was one that would appreciate this kind of stretch-out in distance. He’s very logical, but I doubt he’ll be much of a price for these connections. He only finished a nose in front of today’s rival Shawdyshawdyshawdy (#8) when they met on July 30. He did validate his improved form last time when running on well for second behind a gate-to-wire winner. However, the added ground is a new obstacle. There are a few 3-year-olds in this field stepping up to face older rivals, and I think a couple of them merit strong consideration. My top pick is the longshot Constitutionlawyer (#5). This colt showed some affinity for turf when staying on for third in his first attempt on grass in July. He got a good ground-saving trip that day, but was finishing well at the end. The result wasn’t as positive last time, but he simply got the wrong trip that day. He became rank in the early stages and was forced to race extremely wide around both turns during a time when the rail was the best place to be on the inner course. He’s better than he looks and doesn’t give the impression that added distance will be a problem. Analogy (#10) is another 3-year-old who was compromised by a wide trip on the inner course at Saratoga last time. He has some prior races that put him in the mix, and I won’t be surprised to see a change of tactics to a more aggressive style with Flavien Prat climbing aboard.

Night racing returns to Moonee Valley on Friday night with an eight-part meeting headlined by the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) in race seven. With rain forecast for Moonee Ponds on Friday, it is unlikely we will be racing on a track any better than the current Soft 7 rating. As is often the case with these early spring meetings at The Valley, it could be beneficial to be up on speed early, but as the card goes on look for the backmarkers to make their presence known. The night of racing gets underway at 6:15pm AEST with the rail in the true position.

                    Race 1: 3YO C&G Plate (1200m)

We were with the Matt Laurie-trained Shalaman when he saluted over the course and trip on September 3 and we are happy to butter up once again. The three-year-old colt has two wins and two runner-up efforts to his name this campaign, with his last start victory standing out a bit more following Meridius, who he beat narrowly last time out running on well in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude when finishing second behind Aft Cabin. Look for Ben Melham to use barrier four to his advantage and despite this colt doing plenty wrong in his recent efforts, we expect Shalaman to lead this field throughout and help build us a nice bank early on in the night.

Having taken out the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield on September 13, we expect the Archie Alexander-trained Bound For Home to go on with the job in the Scarborough Stakes. The three-year-old filly gained a perfect run in transit, but was too strong late over the 1100m and will appreciate the 1200m she gets out to on Friday. From barrier nine, look for Declan Bates to have this girl settled in the one-one throughout and when asked for an effort, we expect to see this Rubick filly hit the front inside the final furlong and prove too hard to gun down.

Our best bet of the night comes up nice and early when Team Hawkes send Clemenceau back to the Moonee Valley 1200m. The four-year-old gelding was only beaten a half-length by Remarque when first-up at Rosehill on September 10, but a return to The Valley looks to be the recipe for success. We expect Jye McNeil to be positive aboard early aboard the Capitalist gelding and if he can settle him outside the race leader, Clemenceau has the natural speed to give this lot plenty of concerns in running. The $2.60 being shopped around with online Bookmakers looks to be a perfect price to load into.

                    Race 4: Stutt Stakes (1600m)

The Group 2 Stutt Stakes has long been a lead in for Caulfield Guineas aspirants and we anticipate the Liam Howley-trained Virtuous Circle can bring up a third straight win. The three-year-old colt return with an upset victory when nosing out subsequent winner Castillian over 1500m at The Valley and looks a great value play on Friday night. He gains the services of James McDonald for this and from barrier four, JMac should lob this bloke in a perfect position upon settling and be armed to strike approaching the home turn. He looks like he will only get better as he steps out in trip and with the appreciation for a track with the sting out of it, we expect Virtuous Circle will be too hard to hold out in the Stutt Stakes at a nice price.

He may need to lug 61.5kg over 955m, but the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Esta La Roca looks to present great value in the opening leg of the quaddie. The fact he finished within two-lengths of Bella Nipotina in the Listed Carlyon Stakes first-up, the El Roca mare is sure to appreciate the drop back into a BM84. She is a genuine speed merchant and with two wins and a second when second-up from a spell, we expect she will give her rivals something to catch over the sprint trip. The big weight is a slight concern – but from barrier 12 – if Logan McNeil can find the rail – we are confident Esta La Roca can lead throughout can show his class in this.

                    Race 6: JRA Cup (2040m)

The formidable combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald are set to combine in the JRA Cup and we anticipate it will be a winning move when Great House steps out. The six-year-old gelding has a formidable record of two wins and two minor placings from four second-up runs and considering he is already a two-time winner at Group 3 level, he looks the one to beat in a strong edition of the JRA Cup. The slight concern is that he has not win in close to 12 months, but if JMac can have him settled midfield with cover, we saw first-up at Flemington that he has a nice turn of foot and with a few of these looking for 2400m+, Great House might just be a touch too sharp for his rivals.

                    Race 7: Moir Stakes (1000m)

The Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) has been taken out by many a superstar sprinter and a field of 12 sprinters will be looking to etch their name in the history books. Online betting sites have Paulele and Rothfire as equal $4.40 favourites, suggesting the 1000m scamper is as open an event as ever.

                    Race 8: Stocks Stakes (1600m)

With a bit of luck, we can round out Moir Stakes night on a winning note when the Nick Ryan-trained Kissonallforcheeks goes around in the Stocks Stakes. The five-year-old mare put away a strong field in the Let’s Elope Stakes at Flemington on September 10 and this field is no harder than that day. Mark Zahra who has two wins from as many starts when riding sticks on board and despite this being her first look at The Valley, she has plenty of upside and stepping up to the mile third-up should suit. She has three wins and two minor placings from five runs on soft going, so we know she will handle the track conditions. Kissonallforcheeks simply looks to be one of the better bets of the night.

Headlining the return of racing under lights at Moonee Valley on Friday night is the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m), where a field of 12 sprinters will light up the track.

Having won the McEwen Stakes, the Robert Heathcote-trained Rothfire ($4.40) shares the top line of betting with Godolphin sprinter Paulele ($4.40) with online Bookmakers struggling to split the classy duo. Zoustyle ($7) and Generation ($9) round out the hopes at single-figure quotes, but the chances do not end there.

It will be the charge of the light brigade early, with Paulele, Rothfire, Zoustyle, Malkovich, Generation and Coolangatta all looking to settle in a forward position. The Inferno, September Run and Extremely Lucky will be out the back early but will be the ones flashing home late.

Continue reading for HorseBetting’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for the 2022 Moir Stakes.

Having finished second in this race last year, the Cliff Brown-trained The Inferno is back looking to go one better in the Moir. The six-year-old gelding boasts a breathtaking second-up record having won four times from five goes and based off his return in the McEwen, there is no reason why he cannot build off it here. He was run off his feet early and from the inside barrier did well to pick a way through the field and be beaten just over two-lengths. He meets a lot of those same rivals again on Friday night but drawn out in barrier eight is set to benefit him tenfold. If Blake Shinn can have this bloke settled a touch closer than what The Inferno was first-up, he has the turn of foot to storm home down the centre of the track and cause a boil-over in the Group 1.

September Run managed to tick off her maiden Moonee Valley success in some style during the autumn when saluting in the William Reid Stakes during the autumn and can replicate that result again on Friday. Much the same as The Inferno, the five-year-old mare from the Chris Waller yard is set to appreciate the ridiculous tempo this race will be run at. She draws inside The Inferno which may be a slight issue, but if Kerrin McEvoy can have the mare moving through her gears approaching the turn, she will be the one with the last look at some potentially vulnerable leaders.

Paulele and Rothfire are deserving favourites and if they can handle the hot tempo expected throughout the 1000m scamper, the pair could be the two going stride-for-stride inside the final furlong and battle it out themselves. Throw in the likes of Extremely Lucky and Zoustyle and the 2022 Moir Stakes is a wide open affair with plenty of live chances.

Pimlico Late Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, September 23, 2022

                        by Frank Carulli

Pimlico’s 50-cent Late Pick 4 produced three winning favorites in three days and an average $625 payout last week. The trend could continue this Friday, Sept. 23, with a difficult sequence to close the nine-race card. Here’s a look at the action:

PIM 6th race (3:25 EST) -- MOJOVATION raced evenly against hard-hitting stablemate Yodel E.A. Who (13-43, $396k) in his last start and next-out stakes winner Sir Alfred James in the race prior. He gets plenty of pace to rally into at his best distance. SEMPER FI rallied to win off a three-month layoff to begin his 5-year-old season, now looms a viable longshot after five months away. The field he defeated featured six rivals seeking a repeat victory and six who became six-figure earners. QUICK TEMPO is the speed of the speed and won two of his last three non-stakes tries in 1:09 and change. MO MONEY MO HONEY demolished a field of mid-70 Beyer types but offers little value to Pick 4 players in his bid to remain unbeaten in three starts.

PIM 7th race (3:58 EST) -- Six of the seven entrants posted open-length victories this year, but only one finished in the money next out while the others were soundly beaten. On the other hand, the seven fillies in this 6F starter allowance are a combined 15-38 at the distance, so go deep in this leg.

PIM 8th race (4:31 EST) -- KENDAMA settled for minor awards behind odds-on winners in his last three grass route attempts, including multiple Grade III-placed Wolfie’s Dynaghost. But he stayed on willingly, has turf marathon experience and gets a slight nod in a wide open 1-1/8-mile test. NEVER EXPLAIN raced 3- and 4-wide on the turns at Saratoga and was no threat, but he merits a longer look after meeting the likes of $390k turf earner Sanctuary City and multiple Grade I-placed Analyze It. MT SURIBACHI bid 3-wide on the final turn but was out-kicked by Chad Brown-trained favorite Lonesome Fugitive ($209k) and heavily-bet pace setter It Can Be Done ($271k) in a shorter turf route at Monmouth. If the race comes off the turf, be sure to use main-track-only entrant UNCLE IRISH (#9).

PIM 9th race (5:04 EST) – ANGELI BLU rallied for two wins and a second in his last four long-distance races on dirt and continued improvement can be expected off the Gonzalez claim. JACK GAVE BACK finished behind a repeat winner, a 3-to-5 favorite and a pace controller while finishing in the money in his last three starts for a higher claiming tag.

                        Suggested 50-cent Ticket

                        PIM 6th Race: 2, 6, 9
                        PIM 7th Race: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
                        PIM 8th Race: 4, 5, 6
                        PIM 9th Race: 6, 7

                          #7 Ghostly Girl (15-1)

Let’s go for a long shot gamble in this wide-open seven-furlong maiden affair for juvenile fillies. Bred for a distance of ground on both sides of her pedigree, this daughter of Shaman’s Ghost nevertheless has breezed well leading up to her racing debut, and in a field that appears to lack depth, the Kenny McPeek-trained filly – a $100,000 yearling purchase — should have every chance to at least outrun her 15-1 morning line odds and maybe even spring a major upset. With one of the barn’s go-to riders (Brian Hernandez, Jr.) taking the call, she has a look of a live item, and a gate workout at Keeneland in late August (:46 4/5, fastest of 20) indicates she has plenty of run.

                          Churchill Downs Race No. 10 (5:26 p.m. ET/2:26 p.m. PT)
                          #10 Childers (2-1)

Flashed excellent speed when facing an infinitely stronger group of maidens in his debut at Saratoga in mid-August, and while he weakened to wind up a well-beaten third in a fast, highly rated and productive heat, the son of Bernardini should stick much better with that effort behind him in this restricted maiden dash for juveniles. The Brad Cox stable has a terrific record (29%) with second-time starters, and with the switch to the barn’s main guy Tyler Gaffalione this speedy colt should be capable of taking control early and never looking back.

Today’s Horse Racing Tips -September 23rd

There are six meetings in Britain and Ireland on Friday, with the second day of the Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket very much the highlight in terms of quality. There are
no less than three Group races on the card, along with two valuable listed prizes, and the drying week should ensure the ground conditions are pretty much perfect with some top class performers on show. Elsewhere, there are supporting flat cards from Dundalk, Haydock and Newcastle, while jumps fans can get stuck into competitive cards at Listowel and Worcester.

                            Newmarket 3:00 (UK time)

Roger Varian’s promising filly built on a workmanlike win at Beverley in August when finishing fourth in the May Hill at Doncaster 15 days ago (good to soft ground not in her favour), and remains open to plenty more improvement after just career starts. The rapidly drying ground conditions at HQ are expected to suit (raced freely initially in all runs so far), and the booking of the red-hot David Egan certainly increases confidence she can land this valuable Group 2 prize.

                            Odds: NA

                            Newmarket 1:50 (UK time)

Roger Charlton’s filly has not looked back since making her debut in April, winning three times and impressing when switched to handicaps last time out at Haydock (overcame the drop back in trip to 7f under a confident ride from last to first). This represents a step up in class under David Probert, but the return to a mile should suit and she is still improving at a stage of the season when some of her rivals may have already peaked.

                            Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am September 23rd 2022. Odds may now differ.

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Belmont at the Big A:

Belmont at the Big A September 23, 2022

                              Race 6: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Twenty Six Black finished third on debut last time out at Saratoga in a fairly tough race for New York breds. We should see improvement out of him today. #4 Eye Witness debuts today for a solid trainer in Wesley Ward who usually has his horses ready to fire for their first start.

                              Race 7: Allowance
                              freestar

#8 Shawdyshawdyshawdy was a close second last time out at Saratoga in a race that is pretty similar to what she will be facing today. A repeat effort could find her in the winners circle in this spot. #4 C Falls was third in an allowance race at Saratoga last time out. He has looked solid since moving back to the turf.

Race 8: Joseph A. Gimma Stakes

#7 Miracle should rebound after a poor effort over the slop last time out. If she gets a fast track, she should rebound back to her maiden breaking form. #2 Security Code was a solid winner last time out at Saratoga. She seems ready to take on stakes company today.

                              Race 9: Allowance

#6 Saratoga Gaze goes for two straight victories after a dominant win off of the layoff last time out at Saratoga. She should move forward off of that race. #10 Busy Morning was third in a stakes race last time out at Saratoga. She should enjoy this drop down in class today.
