Race 1: Kennedy Town Handicap

#4 Jolly Honour has tumbled down the handicap. He races in Class 5 for the first time and does so as a two-time winner in Class 3. He has the class edge to put this field away. #11 Smiling Face found form late last season. He should get a charmed run throughout from the inside draw for the in-form Hewitson-Whyte combination. #6 Handsome Veggie has his second run in the grade now. Zac Purton’s booking bears close watching. #1 Bell Of Victory slips down a grade. Keep safe.

Race 2: Sai Ying Pun Handicap

#1 Surrealism narrowly missed in this grade last term and gets another chance here. The big weight is a slight concern, however, he is cut above this group, especially if he finds his best. #8 Tailor Made returned in excellent order first-up, finishing second to President’s Choice at Sha Tin. This looks like the right form line to be competitive again. #11 Victorious Seeker slots in light and is favoured from an inside draw. The penny appears to have finally dropped with #9 Wonder Years. He has claims and gets his chance.

Race 3: Sheung Wan Handicap

#2 Right Honourable is dangerous in this grade. He was set a task from the wide draw last start, forced to make up a stack of ground which, he did with plenty of merit. Expect improvement here at his preferred course. #1 Free Foal has the class and knows what it’s all about. Strong booking of Zac Purton warrants respect as he steps out first-up following a strong trial at Conghua. #4 Fearless Fire will improve second-up. This is the right grade for him. #3 Seaweed Fortune mixes his form but has a powerful finish on his day. Next best.

Race 4: The Taxation Institute of Hong Kong 50th Anniversary Cup Handicap

#2 Exuberant returns to Happy Valley where he is a winner in the past. He put in several nice performances last season in this grade and over the course and distance. If he can replicate one of those, then he is the one they must beat. #7 Country Treasure is better than his record suggests. He had a torrid run throughout last start and he is expected to improve with a smoother run throughout. #10 Loriz is a consistent customer. Expect he finds an early lead from gate one under Derek Leung. #4 Compassion Super has ability. Keep him very safe.

Race 5: Central Handicap

#6 Six Best Friends went close to a first win two runs ago. He’s trialled up well at Happy Valley and from the good gate he should give a good account of himself out in front under Alex Lai, just as he did two runs back at odds of 66/1. #4 Spicy Grill can fly fresh. He won first-up last prep and pairs favourably with Zac Purton this week from the good gate. #9 Shining Fortune mixes his form but has shown capabilities at times. Expect improvement second-up, however, the draw isn’t ideal. #1 Kokushi Musou is next best.

Race 6: Admiralty Handicap (1st Section)

#8 High Rise Soldier should get the right run from the draw. He’s returned to a competitive mark and this grade is right for him. A nice weight and the rise in trip should bring out his best. #9 Trader will skip along out in front. He draws favourably and shapes as the one to catch. #6 Super Winner could follow suit. Expect he rolls forward to press for the lead following an eye-catching first-up effort. #4 Excellent Peers should have improved across the break. He looks capable of taking the next step.

Race 7: Admiralty Handicap (2nd Section)

#10 Enchanting Ibis slots in light and returns following a strong trial effort on the dirt. He looks ready to fire first-up and the light weight should afford him every opportunity in a difficult contest. Expect he has several rating points still in hand. #2 Igniting returned in excellent order first-up. He can take another step forward here. #9 Winning Icey is chasing a hat-trick of wins but rises to Class 3 now. This will be tough once more. #1 Beauty Glory has the class edge following a tidy first-up win. He’ll be thereabouts.

Race 8: Wan Chai Handicap

#7 Comet Splendido has the talent and did very, very well first-up to miss by under a length. He draws better this time and should improve out of sight second-up. Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Rosehill, Cranbourne, Sunshine Coast and Geraldton.

ROSEHILL: RACE 4 @ 3:45 PM

This could turn out to be a very handy form race. WILLINGA RUFIO (1) hasn't done much wrong with three wins and a second from just four starts to date including a victory over this track and trip. Schiller has been on board for all four outings and again gets the benefit of his 1.5kg claim. Should be right there at the business end. Irish import WHITE MARLIN (4) won both starts in the northern hemisphere and looks to have plenty of ability. Respect any market confidence. JUPITUS (5) was an impressive Sandown winner last time out and the extra 300m here looks to suit. Top-three conveyance. LUKEY LUKE (9) strips fitter second-up and can earn some minor money. The well-related COPPLESON (14) is yet to taste defeat in two career starts and must be included.

CRANBOURNE: RACE 3 @ 2:10 PM

CALICO JACK (9) ran on strongly first up at Moe over 1000m in an eye-catching performance. Out to 1200m should suit ideally and with his upside he should be going close. BODY BOB (8) led at Benalla first up over 1206m and did a good job to hold down third. With added fitness he can prove tough to catch. GRANNY'S REWARD (3) wasn't far away first up and should improve off the run, has claims if she can overcome the wide draw. ALCHIAN (7) was just fair in two runs last campaign but has been given time and won a Flemington jumpout in readiness. Should go well fresh.

CRANBOURNE: RACE 8 @ 5:05 PM

SHIPSTERN (11) was a good winner on debut at Warracknabeal before a good effort at listed level at Flemington last start. This is a sharp drop in class and he looks awfully hard to beat in the last. TRADING POST (5) worked to the line well over 1415m at Sale, beaten two lengths in fifth. Has claims with Blake Shinn taking the ride. TUAHINE (10) comes here first up from a spell. She bolted in with her maiden first up at Pakenham last time in before an even effort at Flemington. Strong claims. ROLLING MOSS (2) was well below his best at Mornington last time out but stuck on bravely at Geelong prior and is always a hope in these races.

SUNSHINE COAST: RACE 3 @ 2:18 PM

The Gollan-trained pair are the key. TICK TOCK QUEEN (15) is a former Victorian and has the best figures. Placed at Geelong her only start last preparation and was even better at Bendigo prior. Owns a sharp city trial and Thompson rides. Stablemate DRAMMATICA (9) has an awkward barrier but is ready to win off two heavily-bet placings. Thompson gets off but she can be right in it with average luck in the run. Tougher sorting the rest. AFFABILITY (20) is an each way hope resuming for a top barn. CAMPEEDO (3) peaks and is knocking on the door. The speedy galloper draws to advantage. BEAU FLYER (1) keeps the in-form Callow and will use the rail. He can build on the nice first-up placing.

GERALDTON: RACE 4 @ 3:38 PM

CORN COB (3) peaks off three solid efforts at Belmont. He races handy and has a handy 1.5kg claim. Briefly freshened and the grade suits. Clearly the one to beat. SANS LE SOU (5) resumes and goes fresh. Put three wins together bear the back of the last preparation and can perform fresh. A chance if presented forward as expected. SPEEDING COMET (1) has been racing well at Carnarvon without winning. The low gate and 2kg claim assist. Should go well. HUMAN NATURE (2) was plain the latest at Carnarvon but the form there prior reads well. Uses the rail and is in the mix.

Victoria’s metropolitan Wednesday meeting will return to Cranbourne Turf Club for what promises to be a competitive eight-race card. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, and with more rain on the forecast for Melbourne and the outer suburbs, the track may be closer to a Heavy by raceday. The rail will be pushed out to the 9m position for the entire circuit, which should play favourable to leaders.
Cranbourne Best Bet: Obfuscation

The Simon Zahra-trained Obfuscation has been impressive at all three of his runs in his career, winning one race and finishing third in the other two starts. This four-year-old gelding has shown his likeness for softer tracks, getting through them nicely for two thirds. After changing trainers from the Price & Kent team over to Zahra, this son of Holler returned from a 12-month spell with a very nice third at Sale over 1012m where he flew home from the back to go down by two lengths. Jye McNeil will take his first sit on this gelding, and with his experience we should see this guy settle a lot closer than normal and finish over the top of them late.

Next Best at Cranbourne: Just A Theory

The Mitchell Freedman-trained Just A Theory will be third-up today after running second at both of his starts this preparation at Echuca and Moe over 1200m, which is the exact same distance as today’s race. This four-year-old mare should have won at her first-up run but had to travel four wide the trip with no cover and was beaten by half-a-length by Nasdana, who had this girl’s back everywhere she went. If Jordan Childs can hold the rail and get the box-seat run, Just A Theory will be hot on their heels as they round the turn and will look the winner at some stage in the straight.

In the final race of the day, Fred Kersley will take the ride on Marimenko with 61.5kg over 1200m. This Team Hawkes-trained six-year-old gelding has been lightly raced, only having 10 starts in his career for two wins and four placings. After finishing 13th of 15 in his last start before a spell in a Benchmark 78 at Sandown back on May 11, he will find this Benchmark 64 much easier even with the top weight. Kersley has ridden this guy at six of his 10 starts, so he will know where to have this gelding to make sure he is comfortable and ready to let down at the top of the straight.

A rare Wednesday meeting at Rosehill greets punters this week on a track rated a Good 3 and with the rail out 4m for the entire circuit. With plenty of rain forecast on Tuesday afternoon and throughout Wednesday, it is extremely unlikely we will be racing on anything better than a Soft 6. If the track played like how it did here last Saturday for Golden Rose Stakes Day, every runner will get their chance if good enough, with winners coming from on speed and from the rear of the field. Racing is set to get underway at 2pm AEST.
Best Bet at Rosehill: Willinga Rufio

Our best bet of the day comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie as the Mark Newnham-trained Willinga Rufio looks to bring up a fourth win at his fifth start. The four-year-old gelding looks to be a stayer on the rise and put close to three lengths on his rivals in a BM72 at Warwick Farm on September 14 when resuming from a spell. It is hard to knock his racing pattern, as he jumps cleanly from the barriers, hunts for the rail and offers a kick in the home straight. Tyler Schiller sticks on board, and his 1.5kg claim brings the weight down to 60.5kg. Willinga Rufio looks destined to gain an uncontested lead throughout this BM72 affair, and with a couple of quiet sectionals it is hard to see how his rivals get near him on the winning post. Willinga Rufio will win much better races than this in his career, so the $2.30 on offer with some betting sites looks a perfect price to take.

Next Best at Rosehill: Mars Mission

The Hawkes team sends its progressive four-year-old gelding Mars Mission to the Rosehill 1200m in the final event of the day. Having lost his two best friends during his time in the paddock, the son of Deep Field will be looking to build on the impressive performances he put down last spring. He was last seen finishing 2.6 lengths off Gundec in a Bendigo Guineas, so a step back to BM72 should benefit his chances of bringing up a third career win. On paper, there looks to be plenty of speed in the race, so from barrier 15 we expect Tommy Berry to have this guy settled back in the field. However, with all the pace in the race, it sets up perfectly for Mars Mission to build through his gears, unleash a strong turn of foot and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.

Best Value at Rosehill: Deniliquin

Having produced the race best last 600m in his dominant win at Newcastle on September 17, the John Thompson-trained Deniliquin presents great value in the third event on Wednesday. The five-year-old gelding managed to gain a perfect run in transit on that day and when straightening looked to have the race shot to pieces. He hit the front insider the final 300m and, despite being left in front a long way out, kept lengthening the margin on his rivals behind him. This son of Adelaide draws barrier 12 for this metropolitan assignment, which means he will most likely settle in the second half of the field. Armed with a strong turn of foot, we expect Deniliquin to be hitting the line with great intent and bring up a third win from his last four starts.

Wednesday metropolitan racing returns to the Sunshine Coast for an eight-race program with some very competitive fields. The track is currently rated a Good 4 but there is some rain around on the forecast, so we may find ourselves in the Soft range by the jump of the first race at 1:08pm AEST. Also, the rail will go out to the 3m position for the entire course.
Best bet at Sunshine Coast: Gambu

The Chris Waller-trained Gambu won very well in a 2040m event on September 14 at Doomben. This four-year-old gelding has only had six starts in his short career to date, recording two wins which came over 1350m and 2040m. As a son of Redwood, this guy will appreciate more and more distance, so the step up to 2200m shouldn’t be a worry for punters. Ben Thompson rode both Gambu and Jakkalberry Finn at their most recent starts and he has chosen to stick with this guy, which gives us even more reason to get on him.

After a really impressive win last start, the Tony Gollan-trained Kronenbourg looks a strong play in race six. This four-year-old gelding has only had the three starts so far in his short career and hasn’t missed the placings yet. This son of Vadamos will love the step up in distance, as he was very strong through the line over 1350m last start, and going up to 1600m should suit him even more, considering his father ran fourth in a Cox Plate and Emirates Stakes before he was retired. Ben Thompson will retain the ride on this guy, and if he can have him in a rhythm rounding the final turn, he should be able to push the button and fly by them late.

Brookhaven returns from a four-month spell with a very nice trial under his belt for this first-up run. This Chris Munce-trained gelding finished off last preparation with a second behind Basquiat, who has since run third in two Group 3 races between now and then, which is very good form for a three-year-old maiden. The son of Spieth has only seen Heavy tracks at his first two career starts, and if he gets a Good or Soft track on raceday, it will only be another positive. Justin Huxtable rode this guy in his only barrier trial on August 30, where he sat just off the speed and was untouched for the entirety of the trial as he worked his way quite nicely to the line. If Huxtable can sit just off the pace and let down as they hit the straight, we should be seeing Brookhaven break his maiden.
