      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Keeneland - Race #6
      Picks Notes
#11 Divisibility She gets a good draw to avoid early trouble here, and the Walsh barn has gone 5-for-8 with one-turn main-track maiden claimers like this over the last couple years here, and a handful of those have been nice prices. Hoping he's a mid-range number here.
#8 Saenz She's probably supposed to win this one on the drop after a modest chase-and-fade debut effort at Churchill last month. Obviously player, but I'm sure she's underpriced here.
#2 Divine Grace She has not moved forward much through those first four starts, but she's a pretty reliable one-paced runner who might be able to stick for a share.
Race Summary Divisibility goes for a barn that has been aces with similar horses in recent years here, and I'm hoping the presence of the class-dropping Saenz will keep the price somewhat appealing.

      Keeneland - Race #7
      Picks Notes
#3 Tshiebwe He showed a little late interest in the debut, and he'll get blinkers for this second career start while adding another furlong. Quick spin over the local surface suggests he's maybe more tactical with the blinks today.
#9 Summonyourcourage He has been knocking on the door through his first five starts, landing a trio of runner-up finishes, and he should be in line for another good spying trip with these. Capable, but I wouldn't want to be here at too short of a price.
#8 Extra Anejo Wouldn't be at all surprised to see this one run a nice race first time out, but the barn is really cold with maiden types at this kind of trip on the local main track, and I worry he'll take some cash.
Race Summary Tshiebwe has some room to come forward with these in his second career start, and the combination of this 7-furlong trip and the addition of blinkers might be enough to get him over the top. I'd be happy at something like the 6/1 ML price.

      Keeneland - Race #9
      Picks Notes
#4 Let's Duet Pretty solid mid-range price lean for me in this one, as her two turf tries have both been very good, and Hernandez rides these kinds of turf route races here with price horses better than most.
#2 Candy Light Her best stuff would probably handle these, and she didn't get a clean go in her only try with winners outside stakes company. Dropper has a big claim on this.
#7 Daisy Bee Would love to see her be aggressive in a spot without a ton of super serious pace in the body of the field, and she might be able to stick around for a long time while getting back on the course that produced her maiden win.
Race Summary Let's Duet is interesting. She has only been on the turf a couple times, but she had a troubled trip in her Ellis turf debut and then landed a pretty easy win at Kentucky Downs. Maybe she's too cheap for these on the rise, but I think her turf form is sneaky good.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Laurel Park - Race #1
        Picks Notes
#2 ICE CUBE BABY (6-1) Traffic problems shrouded her effort two starts back at this level.
#6 LIQUIDATOR (9-2) Showed pulse against winning MSW sprint fave but avoided trouble that others encountered.
#1 ONE LAS OLAS (9-5) Chased winning favorite in 3-path, finished 2 lengths ahead of top one.
Race Summary ICE CUBE BABY ran an improved race at this level when blinkers were added. She steadied early on the backstretch, losing momentum, and was trapped on the turn. She made a rail run at the 3-to-2 winner but flattened out and finished 2 lengths behind morning-line favorite ONE LAS OLAS, who pressed the pace. She’s worth a win and place bet to try and turn the tables.

        Laurel Park - Race #4
        Picks Notes
#8 DA BEERS ON ICE (8-1) Exits fast MSW sprint, adds blinkers, expect improvement at good price.
#1 ENERGY EFFICIENT (5-1) Took money, couldn’t overcome troubled start, has bloodlines to run long.
#7 GENERAL JR (5-2) Pressed pace on inside in first route attempt before closers passed by in stretch.
Race Summary DA BEERS ON ICE broke outward and couldn’t keep up with the favorites in a fast-paced MSW debut. He adds blinkers and meets several stretch-out sprinters in this 1-1/16-mile test. His dam, Distinct Affair (30/8-7-1, $129k) won the first two races of her career. Bet to win and place and play a 1-7-8 exacta box.

        Laurel Park - Race #8
        Picks Notes
#5 CALIPARI (3-1) Gets class relief, starts fresh, fits well on best, needs alert break.
#1 MAILMAN’S A FLYER (3- Eight-time beaten fave at proper level, draws rail for second dirt route attempt.
#7 GRAND MANNER (5-2) Tracked solid fractions, didn’t lose ground, transitions from turf.
Race Summary CALIPARI has had six weeks to try and correct a bad starting habit. He was heavily bet as a first-time gelding and a vet scratch August 14, but still believe he can beat this field on his best behavior. Play 5-1 and 5-7 exactas.

              # 1 WINDSOR'S CHAMPION 6/1

              # 3 MY EXPENSIVE GIFT 10/1

I've got to go with ONE SMART COOKIE. Has to be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed section alone. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Patterson have shown sharp results recently. Ran a strong last race. WINDSOR'S CHAMPION - Has been travelling in the most competitive company of the group lately. Has earned sound speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. MY EXPENSIVE GIFT - Has run soundly when racing a dirt sprint race.

                #3 SANDPLUM CREEK (ML=9/2)

SANDPLUM CREEK - Have to like this filly today. If you take a look at her PP lines you see a definite trend, getting closer with all race. Horse's last race was at Remington Park in a race with an Equibase class figure of 49. Dropping considerably in class rating this time puts her in a solid position in this race. This filly is clearly on the improve with Equibase speed figures of 9, 17, 41 last 3 out.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 CORNEROFTHESKY (ML=5/2), #4 DA COACH'S WIFE (ML=7/2), #1 LITTLE ROCK (ML=6/1),

CORNEROFTHESKY - Not easy to support any steed in a short distance contest if she hasn't finished in the money in a sprint in the last two months. DA COACH'S WIFE - Hasn't been close to winning at all lately. LITTLE ROCK - Didn't hit the board on September 25th after the extended rest time. Be doubtful of this thoroughbred this time around.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SANDPLUM CREEK - This filly's superior last speed number of 41, against these ponies, makes her the overwhelming choice.

                STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #3 SANDPLUM CREEK on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

                  #4 DIXIE'S FLATTER (ML=8/1)
                  #1 STAR SCHOLAR (ML=5/2)
                  #6 MIDNIGHT ARKLE (ML=2/1)
                  #5 TREBUCHET (ML=10/1)

DIXIE'S FLATTER - I unquestionably see portentous signs for this mount right here. STAR SCHOLAR - This horse earns a lot of money per race. I believe he can add to the lifetime bankroll in this event. Trying to break maiden status moving from a race on the turf to the main track. I think Attard will have him in good shape for today's race. MIDNIGHT ARKLE - Taking a trip to a lower level; has the capability to make his presence felt. I like the case that this colt's last speed fig, 78, is tops in this bunch. TREBUCHET - Cole-Simpson moves this gelding to the main track today. Look for an increased ability from the most recent turf race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MOMENT OF PEACE (ML=7/2), #3 ROBITAILLE (ML=6/1),

MOMENT OF PEACE - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing talent on September 4th. ROBITAILLE - Unlikely that the rating he garnered on Sep 15th will hold up in this affair.

                  STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Put your money on #4 DIXIE'S FLATTER on the nose if you can get odds of 4/1 or more

                    The Walker Group Picks

                    # 2 RAINAS ROLLIN 5/2

                    # 1 GOLDBAR 8/5

                    # 4 SLENDER BETSY 6/1

RAINAS ROLLIN looks quite good to best this field. She looks formidable in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the halfway point. She has been running quite well lately while recording strong speed figs. Has run solidly when running a dirt sprint race. GOLDBAR - Looks competitive versus this field and will most likely be one of the early speedsters. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figs of this field in his last contest. SLENDER BETSY - Rice makes a blinkers change (going off today), looking for positive results. Must be given a shot given the class of races run as of late.

Today’s New York Hot List races to watch – Thursday, October 13, 2022
By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

                        Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
                        * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race [Md 20000, 6F] – (7) Free Chickens (B) was taken up early in her last start and lost all chance. Now she makes a significant drop in class and moves from turf to dirt where she ran well. (2) In Traffic was second in her debut back in December at Aqueduct where she was well bet and she drops down a claiming notch. (4) Gracefully Wild now has three second-place finishes in a row on turf and dirt and moves back to the main track. (6) Tekila ran his best race of the year last time at Monmouth Park.

5th race [Md Sp Wt, 6F TURF] – (1) Chiringo had a troubled trip in his first start at Saratoga where he was sent off at 5-1. (10) Best Defense will make his debut for Todd Pletcher, Spendthirft Stable, and Irad with an extensive work tab. (7) Iron Man Jimmy got taken up early in his first start against a good field and gets blinkers on which is a strong move for trainer Chad Summers. (3) Don’t Let Me Down was third in his first start which was at Saratoga for a trainer that doesn’t usually win with firsters.

7th race [NY, Md 25000, 7F] – (9) Tough Street will make her third start following a layoff after making a big improvement last time when she moved from turf to dirt for Chad Brown. She is expected to be on the lead once again. (8) Unkoalafied will make a big drop down from a maiden special weight in her second start after getting claimed for $40,000. (1) Lemme Get It returned from a layoff going from turf to dirt and ran her best speed figure. (10) Bern Rosey Bern will move back to the main track after three poor tries on the grass and a third on the dirt in her debut.

9th race [Clm 35000 N3L, 6F TURF] – (4) El Mayor (A) returned from a layoff and was hard held early, got unsettled in traffic, and raced wide. (6) Swashbuckle has been off since July, has early speed, and drops into a claimer for the first time. (7) Vocalize was a recent allowance winner at Colonial Downs and races for a tag again in here. (10) Veterans Beach was claimed last time when finishing third, gets blinkers on, and appears to be on the lead easily in this field.

Best bets: Free Chickens (1st); Tough Street (7th). Best value: Chiringo (5th); El Mayor (9th).

                        No.

                          Hot List Key:

A : A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches in the final 3 minutes and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
                          * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

2nd race – (7) Doozy Batz (C) dropped from 6-5 to 4-5 but settled for third. Drops in class and should prove best here. (2) Sweet Valeria may benefit from switching to a veteran rider. (4) Verdandi has some speed and could be tough to catch. (6) Domitia Lucilla may fire with a turnback to a sprint. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-6-7.

5th race – (1) National Security gives dirt a try and seems to have the right pedigree for it. (9) Ministerial comes off a maiden win and fits well here. (2) Miacomet could take a step forward in his second try after a layoff. (3) Cousin Larry should be a stretch threat. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-9.

7th race – (8) Extra Anejo has been working quickly for his debut and can score at first asking for Asmussen. (10) Freezing Point was third after a troubled start and can make amends here. (9) Summonyourcourage was second in last two starts and belongs in the exotics. (1) Sacred Ground should respond to a turf to dirt switch. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-8-9-10. Doubles: 1-8-9-10 with 2-3-6. Pick 3: 1-8-9-10 with 2-3-6 with 1-5-10-11.

8th race – (6) Static Fire should make a smooth transition from turf to dirt and handle this field. (3) Promises to Dance could be tough to catch in a small field. (2) Roses for Debra is worth a look in her dirt debut. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6. Doubles: 2-3-6 with 1-5-10-11.

9th race – (10) Blissful had a tough trip last time and can rebound with a big effort here. (5) Fuente Ovejuna ships in from California and merits some attention. (1) Fast as Flight will be dangerous from the rail. (11) Intrigue beat maidens last time and fits in with this group. Betting strategy: 10 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-10-11.

                          No.

We Are Still 21-11-3 Despite Last Night's Loss!
Marshall (-10.5) didn't get the memo that they were playing their first ever Sun Belt home game in their 23-13 loss to Louisiana. Still. our free play run is at 21-11-3 over the last 37 days and we will bounce back tonight with a free play from Mark Ruelle.

Prediction: Central Florida -23.5 over Temple

This one looks like a rather large mismatch on paper. UCF comes into the game with three straight wins and the team's only loss came courtesy of a Power Five conference team, Louisville, 20-14. Temple has yet to win on the road this season and is scoring just over 11 points per game. The Knights' strength is their ground game and they go up against the 78th-best ground attack in the country. UCF should not have difficulty moving the ball on the ground against Temple. Adding to that, UCF unveiled a powerful passing attack against an SMU team that is far superior to Temple. Meanwhile, Temple's offense has not produced on the ground or through the air this season and will battle a UCF defense that tightens up in the red zone. Temple has been atrocious on the road and this game looks like it will mirror their earlier games on the road against Duke, a 30-0 defeat, and this past week at Memphis, when they lost by three touchdowns. Don't be surprised if the Owls are blanked in this matchup and UCF rolls to a four-touchdown win.
