#1 Poppy Flower should run better today getting back to a normal track today after running poorly at Kentucky Downs. Two starts back she won a similar race at Saratoga. #8 Zelda makes her United States debut today after running very well overseas in France.

Race 9: Maiden Claiming

#8 Brisky Frolic takes a big drop in class today after some recent struggles against tougher horses. A drop down in class should also help her chances. #1 Flywheel Effect debuts in this spot for Chad Brown, who is always good with first time starters. This is his number one ownership group as well.

Evening racing returns to the Pakenham synthetic on Friday night with an eight-race card to be contested under lights. The rail remains in the true position as per usual, and with some light rain expected throughout the day, expect the track to muddy up slightly with kick-back being an issue for runners in behind the speed. We get underway at 6:15pm AEDT with the closing race scheduled for 9:45pm.
Best Bet: Tahlequah

Our best bet of the night comes in the second leg of the quaddie, in the form of Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained mare Tahlequah. Her first-up run on the Pakenham synthetic over the 1600m was outstanding, only beaten by a negative steer and a wide gate, plus this daughter of Tarzino strips much fitter for the run after a decent spell. She draws poorly again, but in a much smaller field it shouldn’t be a factor on Friday night. After getting rolled at the short price 20 days ago, the Price & Kent team will give Patrick Moloney instruction to press forward and find cover somewhere midfield. Tahlequah needs some luck, but if any falls her way, she looks the one to beat in this field and we’re keen to be with her.

We jump back to race four on the card for our next best bet of the night with Plus Fours. This fit gelding by Cable Bay looks ready to peak third-up after two very strong performances this time in. He comes here off an average performance at Moonee Valley on September 30, but that was on an incredibly biased track where it was impossible to make ground from the back. You need to go back two starts on the Pakenham synthetic to get a gauge on how he’s going, and he figures to run well back on his favoured surface. Zac Spain can have this Phillip Stokes-trained galloper close to the speed and peeling off a hot tempo to score late.

Our value bet for the night is the Archie Alexander-trained mare Game Legend. She comes here a maiden and it is staggering she’s yet to break her duck. She comes out of some key form references last preparation running in behind horses like Bons A Pearla at Sandown last year, before running into another tough task beaten by Barb Raider. She had a year off before running first-up at Bendigo on a Heavy track, and she simply needed the run to be fit and ready here second-up. Going back through her form, she has a run on the Ballarat synthetic as well, so she’s not coming her as a total unknown on the surface. Today’s Horse Racing Tips – 14th October 2022

Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for October 14.

Australian thoroughbred Tab meetings are today held at Pakenham, Moe, Murray Bridge, Taree and Kilcoy.

PAKENHAM SYNTHETIC: RACE 2 @ 6:45 PM

SIR ROCKFORD (4) has run second at both career starts, boxing on well at Cranbourne latest as favourite but finding one better. Draws wide here but rates well and will push forward. GUNSHOT GLITTER (16) was well in the market at Geelong last start but was just fair. Blinkers go on and he draws ideally. KING COUVER (2) was sent out at a huge quote on debut and wasn't disgraced when a 1.5 lengths fourth over 1100m at this track. That race experience could prove invaluable here in this field. FROSTED LADY (6) is close to a win after a solid effort last start, beaten one length into second over 1217m at Moe. In the mix.
SELECTIONS: Sir Rockford to win.

MOE: RACE 4 @ 2:10 PM

WINNING REVOLUTION (11) is the watch horse, having run very well in his debut campaign. Second to a group winner on debut before beating a good horse at Sale, he struggled on the ground before a spell. If the track stays in the soft range he'll prove tough to beat. RATTLE AND BANG (1) continues to race well, holding down second off a wide run last time. Should get a softer passage here and be in the finish.
SELECTIONS: Winning Revolution to win.

MOE: RACE 5 @ 2:45 PM

ARKTIKA (5) ran a nice race on resumption, sticking on well for third in higher grade. She looks nicely placed here out to 1600m in an easier contest and will take plenty of beating. CLAIDHEAMH MOR (1) resumed with a strong win on heavy ground at Bendigo. He'll be hoping for similar conditions and still has upside. PERCEPTIVE (7) found the line well first up at Bendigo over 1300m and will relish the rise in trip.
SELECTIONS: Arktika to win.

MOE: RACE 9 @ 5:20 PM

Keen on SAVANNAH CLOUD (7) to break through after finishing runner up in both starts this time in. Beat Gentleman Roy last time in and maps for a soft run here. Should be going close. CORKSCREW (8) won two in a row to start last campaign before running in some hot races. Looks well placed here first up. NASRAAWY (2) is stepping out at this circuit for the first time. Last appeared when he scored over 1206m at Benalla on September 23. Won last start and is well-placed again.
SELECTIONS: Savannah Cloud to win.

MURRAY BRIDGE: RACE 5 @ 1:55 PM

ITHACAN (2) is from a Victorian barn on a 30 day return. Was last seen in much stronger at Warwick Farm and has decent relative metropolitan figures at this trip. Gets a low gate and Pannell and can win if on-song. ROBE RAIDER (11) resumed in solid order over 1719m and will be better stepping up to this distance. Her best is good enough and she can go close if she avoids getting strung up from the rail. SALUTE THE STARS (5) won the Maiden here by a space and then was out-graded at The Parks. He will push forward and is a hope with Crowther back on. D'ISLES (8) will be at peak fitness and has been going well without winning. On a quick return and keep onside.
SELECTIONS: Ithacan should take beating.

TAREE: RACE 3 @ 2:35 PM

GREEK HERO (1) stormed home to just miss at Eagle Farm last time out, finishing just 0.2L away. He'll have to carry a big weight, but he appears a class above this field and a repeat of his last start will make him hard to beat. SUPER (3) was only beaten 4.5L in G3 company two back, and wasn't far away at Warwick Farm most recently. His record on wet going is a slight niggle, but he's drawn well for Penza and he's sure to make his presence felt. MISTER SMARTEE (6) wasn't far away at Port Macquarie just a week ago and draws much better today. Fit and in form, he'll be there at the finish. DRAGON'S SHADOW (7) drops back to 1600m off a slight freshen. Going well and can have the last crack at them if they run along.
SELECTIONS: Greek Hero looks the one to beat.

KILCOY: RACE 7 @ 3:53 PM

SPICY SONIC (2) led and won the Maiden at the Sunshine Coast and then improved his figures beaten 1.2L at the Gold Coast. Is back after 32 days after switching from Vandyke barn to the Neasham establishment. Has the speed to manage the awkward barrier and fitter he can bounce. LEGEND RULES (5) has been threatening in stronger. He's at top now and gets another chance. IN'HINCHABLE (1) found the grade too tough the latest but the 58 win here prior was good. Gets in well with the 3kg claim. IN GREAT NIC (6) needed the first-up run and has plenty up the sleeve. Darws for the run of the race and the barn is respected.

Belmont at the Big A Horses in Focus for Friday, October 14

RACE 1: SIGNATOR (#2)

The Repole and St Elias Stables entry figures to take plenty of money in this opener, of which Crupi (#1) appears to be the stronger half. His two starts at Saratoga, both at 7 furlongs, looked pretty similar. He lost contact with the field in the early stages of his debut, was put to intense pressure on the turn, and finally responded through the stretch, passing horses quickly to nearly get up for second. He was slightly more engaged early in his second start, but still looked fairly sluggish, not kicking into gear until the stretch. I think he has to show some improvement to break his maiden here, but he is bred to appreciate added ground. Stablemate Mindtap (#1A) was a little chilly on the board in his debut, and that seemed like the weakest division of three maiden races on that Sep. 3 card. He got a pretty good trip, racing inside early before angling out into the clear on the turn. He had dead aim on the tiring leader through the stretch, but seemed to stall in the last eighth. He’s also bred to appreciate more ground, but I think both of these Pletcher runners are facing a formidable foe. Signator (#2) debuted over just 6 furlongs last month despite looking like one that wants more ground. He raced between horses in mid-pack early before advancing into the clear in upper stretch. The eventual winner got away from him at the head of the lane, but this grey son of Tapit lowered his body and lengthened his stride impressively on the run to the wire. He also proceeded to gallop out well clear of the winner. His Phipps-bred female family traces back to second dam Furlough, who won the Grade 1 Ballerina. Shug McGaughey is 8 for 30 (27%, $2.60 ROI) with maiden 2nd time starters going from sprints to routes on dirt over 5 years. I expect him to win today, and I suspect this colt could have a very bright future.

RACE 5: KINENOS (#3)

Mooney Love (#1) did everything asked of him in his U.S. debut at Saratoga, but the win was more workmanlike than anything else. He lacked early speed and Joel Rosario didn’t ride him with too much urgency. It took him a while to hit top gear in the stretch, but he did ultimately run away to a clear victory. The problem is that he was facing an unusually weak field for the level that day, and has been off for a few months since then. Furthermore, he was successful going 1 1/2 miles, and I’m not sure this cutback in distance suits him. The horse to beat might be Space Launch (#6). This 4-year-old gelding doesn’t often get the respect he deserves at the windows, as a highly consistent performer with improving speed figures. He’s recently added some improved tactical speed to his arsenal, which should make him especially dangerous in this spot. I thought he chased a the wire-to-wire winner pretty gamely last time, and the slight cutback won’t hinder him. My top pick is Kinenos (#3). This horse got a terrible trip last time at Saratoga when Julien Leparoux seemed unable to restrain him in the early going, allowing him to prematurely race up to contest the pace while racing wide without cover throughout. That type of trip is rarely going to be successful, especially in a three-turn race. He’s much better when he can get taken back to make one run, and Jose Lezcano has ridden him that way with success in the past. He’s now making his first start off the claim for Mike Maker and he has plenty of competitive prior races going distances similar to today’s trip.

RACE 7: INSPIRATION POINT (#8)

Midnight Worker (#6) is probably the one to beat as he gets further class relief. While his form this year looks pretty lackluster, he was facing a much tougher field at the $25k level last time and actually didn’t run that badly to be fifth. A few who finished ahead of him have already returned to repeat or improve their speed figures in subsequent starts. This is by far the softest group he’s ever met and he seems like a deserving favorite. I’m not thrilled with the other potential short prices in here. I don’t like Lord Gatling (#5) going this far, and Once a Giant (#7) wasn’t a factor against an even worse field at Saratoga last time. Zuzudini (#10) makes some sense as he also drops in class. However, I don’t like the way he’s finished off his last couple of races and am concerned that his form is tailing off. Therefore, I’m going in a different direction with Inspiration Point (#8). Distance is also a question for this 4-year-old, but I thought he ran fine in his only two prior dirt route attempts as a younger horse. He was meant for longer distances back then, but has since concentrated on sprints as he’s dropped in class. I actually thought he showed some signs of life last time despite a less than ideal ride. Eric Cancel got him moving forward down the backstretch, but put him in an awkward spot between horses at the break for the turn, and he steadied, losing valuable momentum. He did recover to finish third in a solid effort. I think this added distance could work for him and he’s subly in better form than it appears.

2nd race – (11) Retained drops into a claimer for the first time and should prove best. (4) Sailor’s Chance could wake up on dirt. (6) Warhorse West could blossom for new connections. (1) Full Mag is worth a look in his debut. Betting strategy: 11 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-6-11. Doubles: 1-4-6-11 with 2-5-6-7.

3rd race – (2) Li’l Grazen comes off a big win at Del Mar and was claimed by Diodoro. Seems nicely spotted for a third straight win. (7) Invaluable was claimed by Maker last time and could be the main threat. (6) Frills should be a threat in this field. (5) Aferdita seeks a fourth straight win and should not be ignored. 5th race – (3) Lady Puchi has been competitive in stakes and should be able to handle this field. (8) Isn’t She Lovely turned in a strong comeback effort and figures to be fitter today.
