Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

          October 24, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race program ready to go this evening. The feature comes in Race 8, an Open Pace with a $39,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

          Race 6

3-Thor And Dr Jones (9-1)-Raced uncovered for about 5/8's of a mile and finished a game 2nd. Camera shy 4-year-old is only 1-20 at YR and 1-15 this year, normally wouldn't be part of my ticket. But comes off an improved effort and with a smooth steer could surprise with a trip out win.
5-Urban Renewal (7-1)-Will fade both program chalks (1-2) and will use Dube after rallying from last to pass the one above and win at 19-1. It was the 4th start after a Renaud claim, that barn is posting 28% winners over the past 30 days and the pace should be lively.
6-Brackley Beach (9/2)-Jenn B entry downed the $25k claimers with Boyd at the controls and bumps up with the same pilot. Best to respect, paced the back-half in 56.2 on its own, and could stay good for the 3rd straight picture.

          Race 7

4-Whitecookie (2-1)-Was a game winner on the engine at this class on 10-17 and should be a small price here. That was the 1st start after returning from Philly and hadn't raced since 9-23. Comes back in sequence, draws inside, and could get the top without much trouble.
5-Smokin By N (7/2)-Did get a pocket trip but couldn't catch a 1/2 winner who took his 5th straight picture. Nothing to be embarrassed about last week facing a tough winner. Is in good form, has been right there at the finish and won versus this kind at YR on 7-25.

          Race 8

1-The Wild Card (5-1)-Came up with a big try after being off 3-weeks. Almost out battled both big chalks down the lane coming up the inside on an-off track. Could get the pocket behind last week's winner (4) and get some revenge.
6-Leonidas A (9/2)-Will toss last, was used early, not sure why, and faded after racing wide in a 1 1/4 mile affair. Should have a different plan tonight at a familiar level. Can come off cover in a race with inside speed and the fractions should be lively.

          Race 9

1-Marco Beach (9/2)-Is usually a player versus $40k claimers and raced off cover to finish 2nd. Now makes his 3rd start for new connections and gets Dube in the bike. The driver change should help, Dube knows well. Should race on the point or in the pocket with this post draw and that has worked for this 6-year-old.
6-Benji's Best (5/2)-Burned some money at 3/5 when dropped to this level in last. Benji is only 2-24 on a wet track, was out of step from the word go last week and having the rail was of no benefit. The last 2 starts have been on "good" tracks and may rebound nicely on a dry surface at a much better price.

          $1.00 Late Pick 4

          3,5,6/4,5/1,6/1,6
          Total Bet=$24

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
            Picks Notes
#1 Tick Alert She showed pace in the debut before stopping, and maybe she stays on better this time around with that first spin under her belt. Goes for it from the fence?
#4 Sensible Marriage She makes her local debut after never really getting involved at Parx in the first trip to post, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see her find the local company a bit more agreeable.
#5 Zora She has shown the type of mild finishing ability that has landed her a few underneath slices so far, but I imagine she will find one or two of these a bit too tough again.
Race Summary Tick Alert opened a big lead before fading in the debut run, and she isn't meeting a ton of serious early burn in here, giving her a real chance to run them off their feet today.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
            Picks Notes
#3 Lady Afraid She is getting a bit short on excuses after failing to stay again last time out, but she appears to be the controlling pace in this spot, and I think she found the group she can wire.
#4 Gracie Dance She ran a good race while prompting the speed in her Ohio debut, and she might get the right kind of trip while tracking the top choice early on. Not impossible.
#6 Lead Performer She will try the local footing for the first time here, and she has enough speed to at least stick close on the cutback. Price player for a share?
Race Summary Girl Afraid looks fast enough to control the pace in this spot, and her first local sprint trip was pretty sharp last time out. Something similar should do.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
            Picks Notes
#7 Flor de Sombra She's going to meet some other pace in here, but she seems to be the classiest of the bunch and might just stretch these out from the start.
#3 Warrior's Ransom She might get a decent trip in here while tracking a couple pace players, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her get towed into the pace a little bit and stick around at a mid-range price.
#5 Scottish Symphony She's probably going to get bet a bit in here for a capable team, and she has been working regularly toward this unveiling, but she's still a maiden trying statebred stakes company out of the box, and that's a big ask no matter what.
Race Summary Flor de Sombra is probably best of the speed here, and the main question mark is whether she's going to like the new footing.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Parx - Race #1
              Picks Notes
#2 YELLOW DRESS (7-2) Second in last pair, starts fresh off the claim for first start locally.
#1 CABRA CHICA (9-5) Six-race winner meets mostly non-winner of 2 types, enters new barn.
#4 VANISHING FAITH (10-1) Led until stretch in pair of longer sprints recently, switches riders.
Race Summary YELLOW DRESS sat a good trip off the dueling leaders when claimed out of a runner-up finish at Canterbury Park last month. But the race timed faster than a $7,500/nw2 claimer for the boys on the same card. The well-traveled 4-year-old could win with a duplicate effort. Bet to win and place.

              Parx - Race #2
              Picks Notes
#8 SHANIA SEA (4-1) Adds blinkers from favorable post, strong play in dreadful nw/2 field.
#9 LADY BERNADETTE (5-1) Stopped in last pair but can make good use of her speed in this spot.
#5 ROSE LEGACY (5-2) Won in slow-paced route race at Parx, takes magnified class drop.
Race Summary SHANIA SEA was overmatched in her second start, but she held onto a clear lead in a debut sprint victory over Automated Teller, a maiden-breaker earlier this month. She meets eight rivals who are combined 8-for-135, draws a favorable post and wears blinkers for the first time. Bet to win and place

              Parx - Race #4
              Picks Notes
#2 BOCA ROYALTY (5-1) Looks to shed recent ‘bridesmaid’ label in wide-open sprint.
#8 LEVIOSA (5-1) Won 4 of 11 out of town, could take some catching off the claim for $7,500.
#4 SIZZLING ROMA (9-2) Piling up the checks, eligible for easier condition, has new connections.
Race Summary BOCA ROYALTY rallied for six seconds in her last 11 starts, while switching barns three times. She’s due for a breakthrough at a track where she has won five times. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-8 exacta box.

                    # 7 MISS YOU MOM 3/1

                    # 6 PIPER ROSE 10/1

                    # 8 BRODIE BABY 8/5

MISS YOU MOM has a quite good shot to take this race. Boasts formidable Equibase Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. With a formidable 81 speed figure last time out, will clearly be a factor in this competition. Has been running in the most competitive company of the field lately. PIPER ROSE - Demonstrates the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 73 speed figure which is one of the top in this group. Handler has sharp win rate (18 percent) at this distance and surface. BRODIE BABY - This filly has a very good win percent in dirt route races. Looks quite good to be up near the front end at the first call.

                      #6 VENETIAN DREAM (ML=3/1)

VENETIAN DREAM - The way this event sets up this gelding will be in stalking position when they head for the finish.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SACRED KIKI BIRD (ML=5/2), #4 BULLION (ML=7/2), #2 RULING EMPIRE (ML=6/1),

SACRED KIKI BIRD - This morning-line favorite hasn't been to the track in awhile. No morning blow outs since last race. BULLION - I'm forecasting a lackluster go out of him this time out. RULING EMPIRE - The speed figure last out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued contestant.

                      STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#6 VENETIAN DREAM is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                        # 1 HOT AS BLUE BLAZES 3/1

                        # 5 COUNTESSOFLOVELACE 4/1

                        # 8 SWEET ASHLEY 6/1

I like HOT AS BLUE BLAZES here. Is hard not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been competitive - 62 avg - of late. This filly gets a boost with Jurado in the irons. Ran a very strong last race. COUNTESSOFLOVELACE - She has been running quite well as of late while recording strong Equibase Speed Figures. Is tough not to consider given the company run in recently.

                          #6 ACQUA BELLA (ML=9/2)

GIRLFROMOUTERSPACE - Nunez and Linder perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +92 return on investment for a jockey and trainer. I really like that last race on October 4th at Parx Racing where she ran third. ACQUA BELLA - Lake brings her back again. I advocate you stick with this strong filly. Ranked number one in earnings per race. Another confirmation that this equine has the class to win.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MAJESTIC CREED (ML=4/5), #5 DANA'S BIG DAY (ML=6/1),

MAJESTIC CREED - Hasn't raced or had any works since Sep 24th. Not much value on this morning-line favorite. DANA'S BIG DAY - Just don't figure that she is offering enough value at the morning line odds.

                          STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #2 GIRLFROMOUTERSPACE to win if we can get at least 3/1 odds
