The annual Bendigo Cup race-day will be held at the Bendigo Jockey Club on Wednesday. Even though the fields could be hampered by the heavy rain in Victoria over the last few days, we should still see a very competitive nine-race program, which will be highlighted by the Group 3 $500,000 Bendigo Cup. The track is currently rated a Heavy 9 with the rail sitting in the true position for the entire circuit. Racing will begin at 12:30pm AEDT.
Bendigo Cup Tip: Port Philip

In the Group 3 $500,000 Bendigo Cup, only eight horses have accepted to take their place in the feature race, with many trainers opting not to send their horses to a testing rain-affected track on Wednesday. One of the horses that looks very hard to beat over 2400m on a Heavy rated track is the Julius Sandhu-trained Port Philip, who has now won four on the bounce since August 17. This five-year-old gelding has progressed very nicely this campaign after taking out his maiden at Cranbourne over 1600m, to then progress all the way up to a Benchmark 84 at Caulfield on October 12 over 2400m. This son of Camelot has a very good record on Heavy tracks with three wins from five starts, with all of those wins coming this preparation. If the track is still Heavy on race day, we expect to see a flood of money to come for this talented galloper. And if that is the case, the $3.10 that some online Bookmakers are offering may not be available for long.

The Simon Zahra-trained Obfuscation has had two very good runs this preparation and will be looking to continue his upwards trend of placings, after finishing third first-up and second last start, meaning that hopefully a win in just around the corner. Coming out of this four-year-old geldings last two starts, two of the three horses that have finished ahead of this guy have gone on to win their next race. This son of Holler is coming out of very good form races, and now that he finds another rain-affected track and Damien Oliver jumps aboard we should see this guy flying down the outside late and winning on Wednesday.

In the fourth race of the day over 1100m, the Denis Daffy-trained Overkill looks very hard to beat, after winning his last two starts at Hamilton and Horsham in Benchmark 70 races. After those impressive wins on rain-affected tracks, it seems that this son of Fastnet Rock is ready for a step up in grade to a Benchmark 78 on Wednesday. This six-year-old gelding has returned this preparation in scintillating form, recording two wins from two starts in his second preparation for the Denis Daffy, who obviously has this horse worked out now and he is getting the very best out of him. John Allen will stick with this guy after a successful combination last start. He should be able to bounce on the lead here and be very hard to get past in the straight.

Luke Oliver will bring his five-year-old gelding, Real Sensation, to Bendigo on Wednesday to contest the last race of the day in a Benchmark 78 over 1400m. This son of Real Impact was very good first-up from a spell at his last start over 1400m at Caulfield on October 12, where he flew home late to beat Corona Lad right on the line and win by a nose. Jamie Mott rode this gelding last start and he will stick with him as he heads to Bendigo, which is a positive push for us as he is only going to Bendigo for three rides. If this guy gets any luck in running from barrier three, we should see him running down the outside late, looking to go two from two this preparation.

The mid-week Queensland metropolitan race meeting returns to Eagle Farm on Wednesday with a competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated as a Soft 5 but with some warm weather on the forecast for the next few days, we should be on a Good track come race day. The rail will be in the 6m position for the entire circuit when racing kicks off at 12:43pm AEST.
Best Bet: Immoral

In the Class 1 Handicap over 1200m, the Tony Gollan-trained Immoral looks to be a very good chance to break through after four consecutive unlucky runs in defeat this preparation. This four-year-old gelding has been extremely unlucky since in his last two starts, especially in his last start where the eventual winner boxed him in and made sure that he couldn’t get out as they rounded the home turn. James Orman, who also rides this gelding on Wednesday, got him out of trouble and into clear but when he ran home the winner was already off and gone with the prize. Getting back to the bigger track at Eagle Farm and jumping from barrier four, Orman should be able to lob in the one-one, stay out of trouble and break his unlucky run of outs.

After getting no luck in her last start over 1100m at Ipswich on October 12, the David Vandyke-trained Joy Too All looks to have a very good chance to record win six at start 11 on Wednesday as she steps up to 1400m. This lightly raced daughter of All Too Hard has a very impressive career record with five wins in 10 careers starts. In her last run, this mare tracked the leaders up to the corner in the box seat but once the field got into the straight, she had nowhere to go as the rest of the field went around her and the leaders, boxing her in as she went to the line hard held to finish sixth by just over a length. If Michael Cahill can have her at the back of the field, where she normally races, she will have a lot to give down the outside in the straight.

This five-year-old mare has been very good over 1400m and 1600m in her career with three of her five wins coming over 1600m plus and now that she is getting up in distance to 1600m, we believe that she will be ready to win. This daughter of Love Conquers All will have to drop to the back of the field from barrier two and Taylor Marshall will need to find her way to the outside to allow this girl to show her strong turn of foot and finish over the top of the rest of the field.

Race 1: Chung On Handicap (2nd Section)

#5 The Multiplier is bred for the dirt and he has shown a strong liking to it in the past. He’s done well on the surface previously and he should be ready to fire second-up following the break. His most recent trial on the dirt caught the eye. #4 Smart Folks is still chasing a first win. He’s also shown a liking to the dirt and draws favourably here. #9 Call Me Lu trialled very, very well on the dirt recently. He should get his chance. #6 Diamond Soars can figure with the right run. The dirt is also his go.

Race 2: Hoi Pa Handicap

#9 Boys Party is unlucky not to already be a winner in Hong Kong. He’s done well so far without winning and has shown plenty of prowess on the dirt. He’s worth taking a chance on here as long as he can offset the wide draw. #14 Oh Bravo has mixed his form but has shown a liking to the dirt before, especially in his trials. He steps away off a very, very dangerous rating. #2 Run Des Run looks well placed here third-up following the break. Strong booking of Zac Purton holds him in good stead. #13 Speed Force is a factor in this grade. Keep safe.

Race 3: Chung On Handicap (1st Section)

#4 Theta Hedge is racing well and should get his chance to land a first win. He’s trialled well on the dirt previously and should make his presence felt here. #8 Steel Win ran well first-up and is open to further improvement. He’s a two-time winner on the dirt in Class 4 and he won’t know himself in the bottom grade on the dirt. #2 Asian One caught the eye with a solid trial recently on the dirt. He’s in good hands with Zac Purton up. #1 Compulsory caught the eye with a very strong trial recently on the dirt. Expect he rolls forward to try and pinch this.

Race 4: Kwok Shui Handicap

Competitive Class 2 feature on the dirt. #2 Mighty Giant ran well first-up and his latest trial on the dirt was solid. This is his first start on the surface under race conditions but he has the class to boss this group, if he’s right. #6 Apache Pass loves the surface and remains a threat with no weight on his back from a positive gate. He’ll be right in this. #1 Kings Shield should find the front as he has done in the past. He loves the dirt and his best form on it holds him in good stead. #9 Maximus returned in fantastic order first-up. Keep safe.

Race 5: Sha Tsui Handicap (2nd Section)

#2 Killer Instinct will improve getting back into Class 4. He rates strongly here first-up following a very, very good trial on the turf. He’s previously trialled well on the dirt and he is by Power who – as a sire in Hong Kong – has a very good record with progeny racing on the dirt. #9 Stand Up lines up following a strong run over the course and distance last season. The dirt looks like his go. #3 Fiery Diamond is racing well and should land in the right spot from gate one. #10 Lucky Ruby finds favourable conditions. He’s a two-time winner on dirt.

Race 6: The Tsuen Wan New Town 60th Anniversary Cup Handicap (1st Section)

#12 Miracles caught the eye first-up when finishing a close-up second over this course and distance. He trialled well on the dirt before that and has clearly taken a liking to the surface. He’s well weighted and does shape as the one to beat. #4 Youthful Deal has mixed his form but does appear to have his fair share of ability. His latest trial on the dirt was solid. #3 Prosecco has shown glimpses of talent. He should be favoured if they go hard out in front. #2 Trader should lead with Angus Chung’s 10lb claim in use. Keep safe.

Race 7: Tai Ho Handicap

#3 Magic Supreme is racing well and should get a sweet run throughout from gate two. The step up in trip looks suitable, especially at his age and also in Class 4. #1 Infinite Power is consistent and draws well. He’s well weighted with Angus Chung’s 10lb claim in use. #5 Turbo Power closed nicely last start at his first start on the dirt. He’s American-bred, so the surface should continue to pose no concerns. #6 Yes We Can was dominant last start when winning in this grade. This looks tougher but he should make his presence known.

Race 8: Tsuen Fu Handicap

#8 Jolly Ruler was very, very classy last start when winning at his final outing of last season. He can carry on with that form, especially on the dirt following a stylish trial at Conghua. #2 Super Win Dragon was narrowly beaten by Jolly Ruler last season but has since returned in excellent order this term with a win. These two are the likely standouts. #3 Red Desert is chasing a long overdue fifth Hong Kong win. He’s racing well and should be in the finish. #7 Faulds has trialled well on the dirt and should get his opportunity.

Race 9: Yeung Uk Handicap

#1 Chancheng Prince is as solid as they come on the dirt in Hong Kong. He can improve once more following a tidy effort for second last start. He draws well, Ruan Maia knows the horse and he shapes as the one they all must beat. #8 Amazing Teens can take a step forward from a better draw. #6 Handsome Twelve is chasing back-to-back wins. He’s in very good form and Zac Purton’s retention catches the eye. #5 Ultra Express put in a total forgive run first-up. He’s clearly better on the dirt now and this contest sees him with favourable conditions.

2nd race – (3) Lily’s Creed was second last time and should get the victory here. (10) Connelmaura flopped in MSW company but could rebound in a claimer. (7) Bonanza Grade showed speed last time and might hang on against this field. (4) Moon Magic Chrissy should be a big threat against claimers. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-4-7-10. Doubles: 3-4-7-10 with 2-3-5-6.

3rd race – (2) Argumental has not raced since March but is working smartly for her comeback. (3) Colonel Grace is a firster who should get some attention. (5) Awesome Ally Vee was a game second last time and merits attention. (6) Storm Haven was an even fourth in her debut and should not be overlooked. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-5-6.

5th race – (3) Policy Option (D) dropped from 9-2 to 7-2 and rallied belatedly for fourth. Can work out the right trip in this spot. (2) Running Bee flopped in a graded stakes but fits better here. (1) Warbird could perk up back on turf. (10) Mount Rundle should be a threat in the final furlong. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-10.

7th race – (7) Al’s Rocket has a nice late kick and should prove best in the final furlong. (3) Forwardly could take a step in that direction today. (11) Jarreau was second in his last two starts but landed a tough post. (6) Verstappen comes off a good second and should be in the picture once again. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-6-7-11. Doubles: 3-6-7-11 over 1-3-10-11.

Here’s our looks for Keeneland on this coming Wednesday, the greatest way to spend “Hump Day:”

1st: 4-6/5/1/2//3…Undecoded (4) gets the nod in the ole’ lid-lifter at the scenic oval in Lex-town on this “Hump Day.” This 3YO daughter of Algorithms was claimed last time out for $20,000 and now will make the first start for the new barn operation. Barn wins with .08% with newcomers and with .13% with those making the 2nd start off a layoff. Picks up a huge rider switch and this one has a 3-1-0 mark at this distance. Could be popular here, despite the 6-1 ML odds. Passionfortreasure (6) is the ML favorite and comes in off a huge win in Cleveland. Moves up to the big leagues right now and picks up a top rider. Has speed and could be a tough out here. I bet the 4-6 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 4-6 over/under the 5-1-2 in two smaller units.

2nd: 7-4/3-6-8/9-2/10-1/5…Bonanza Grade (7) flashed a ton of speed in the debut effort and tired at the end of that one. Barn wins with .28% when moving from the MSW ranks into the MCL level. Ran up against Justa Warrior in the debut effort and that one came back to win a Stakes later in the summer at Ellis Park. Look out for this one. May not stop this time around. Moon Magic Chrissy (4) drops into the MCL ranks here, too. Barn wins with .18% of those kind and .18% when going from a route distance to a sprint. Gets a top end rider up for the first time. Look out here with some speed. I bet the 7 across the board and then box the top two in the exactas. I will key the 7 over/under the 4-3-6-8-9-2 in two smaller units.

3rd: 4-5/2-6-7/1-3-8…Adaline Julia (4) could pop at a square price here. This 3YO daughter of Oxbow will make the career debut and has a series of prime workouts to boost the effort. Rider has teamed up with the trainer to go 2-1-0 in the last 7 efforts. Dam of this one has produced 3 winners from 5 starters. Look out. Awesome Ally Vee (5) ran a credible 2nd at this same level last time out. That effort may produce a similar finish here. I bet the 4 across the board and then key the 4 over/under the 5-2-6-7 in the exactas.

4th: 3-8/1-4-6-9/2/7-5…Overtaxed (3) drops into the claiming ranks here after two so-so efforts of late. The win at Churchill Downs on June 11 was spot on. That rider returns here and the barn wins with .06% when moving into the claiming ranks for the first time. Works of late are solid. Double Thunder (8) ran in the Breeders’ Cup at the end of 2021. Has not fired much this year in two starts. Now, the 3YO son of Super Saver ends up in the claiming ranks. Gets a top rider for a top barn. Look out here, if he can rediscover the old self. I bet the 3-8 across the board and then box these two in the exactas. I will key the 3-8 over/under the 1-4-6-9-2 in two smaller units.

5th: 2-10/4-8-11/3/5/1//7-6…Running Bee (2) gets the nod here. This 3YO son of English Channel ran poorly in the G3 Dueling Grounds Derby and over the hills and dales of KY Downs. But he would not be the first to dislike the undulations and unusual course. Returns here to the flats and ran very well to break the MSW at Saratoga just two starts ago. Gets a huge rider switch here and drops back into the allowance ranks. Look out. Mount Rundle (10) ran 3rd in the same Stakes at KY Downs last time out. Well beaten, but still 3rd. Ran OK at Ellis Park in a Stakes, too. Broke the MSW over the sod at Churchill Downs in early June. Has ability. I bet the 2 across the board and then box the top 2 numbers in the exactas. I will key the 2 over/under the 10-4-8-11-3-5-1 in two smaller units.

6th: 3-2/8/4-7/5/6-1…Zainalarab (3) will make the first start for the new trainer and will move to the dirt, too. Barn wins with .14% of the last 108 to make the barn switch. Also, trainer wins with .22% when moving from the turf to the dirt. In 5 starts over a fast dirt surface? This one is 2-1-0. Gets a top rider for the job. Bombdiggity (2) has run two good ones in a row and has been much, much better after getting treated with Lasix. Rider who won on his back gets back aboard here. I bet the 3-2 across the board and box those two in the exactas. I will key the 3-2 over/under the 8-4-7-5 in two smaller units.

7th: 11-6-7/4-5/3/2-1/10-9…Jarreau (11) gets a bad break with the break from the outside post here. But the 5YO gelded son of Pioneerof the Nile comes in off 4 good ones in a row. Been right there in each. Returns here as a beaten favorite. Barn wins with .22% of the last 436 that fit that category. In 15 turf starts to date, this one has a 2-5-1 record. Can he pass the last one when making the stretch run? Good question. Verstappen (6) gets a hot rider and nearly won on this one last time out at KY Downs. Will stalk and pounce. Could fit here nicely. Al’s Rocket (7) is another late runner and will be a stretch threat. Rider is world class, but will need some racing luck. I bet the 11-7 across the board and then box the top 3 in the exactas. I will key the top 3 numbers over/under the 4-5-3 in two smaller units.

8th: 3-10-11/6-7/1-4/9//2-5-8…Master Game (3) picks up the nod in the finale. This one drops out of the MSW ranks into the $40,000 price point for the first time. Gets blinkers for the first, time, too. Barn wins with .13% making this drop in class and with .16% picking up the shades. Biggest change is a return of the best rider on the grounds. Work on Oct. 6 was spot on. Could overpower these. Point of an Affair (10) will make the career debut here and the barn wins with 0-for-21 when making the first start in the MCL ranks. Wow. Time for a change for this top-ranked trainer. Apollo Rising (11) ran super in the debut effort at $30,000. Moves up to face tougher here. Barn wins with .12% on 2nd starts. I bet the 3 across the board and double down on the win bet. I box the top 3 numbers in the exactas. I key the top 3 numbers over/under the 6-7 in two smaller units.
