DRF's Horse Racing Playbook for Sunday, November 6, 2022
          DRF StaffNov 05, 2022

Daily Racing Form has served as the most trusted source of news and information about the sport since 1894, and moving forward we have decided to provide a free daily playbook – something that both hardcore horseplayers and casual observers can reference to get informed of each day’s action.

12:15 LRL 1st PENSIVELY (#2, 5-1) is a DRF Best Bet (Dan Illman). | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:18 AQU 4th FLY RIGHT (#1, 6-1) sat a good trip throughout that debut at Saratoga before gamely driving through to a short lead in the stretch, but he was only second-best when all was said and done; got in too tough in the Pilgrim last time over yielding turf; good post returning to the MSW ranks. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:20 WO 1st BUTTERED TOAST (#2, 8-1) is taking on the boys off a wide-closing third behind Fish Mooney, who subsequently ran second in an N1X for distaffers with an 80 Beyer. She's a good fit here Beyer-wise and has some speed to run at. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:40 LRL 4th URBAN BANDIT (#7, 5-1) moves from turf to dirt and drops into a claimer for the first time. Tried to rally from out of it two back in a race where they ran one-two all the way around (runner-up returned to finish second in a special weight with a 48 Beyer). -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

1:46 AQU 5th COMMAND POINT (#12, 8-1) ran well in all four NY starts at the end of last year vs. some better horses; was off the long layoff when down inside and finishing evenly at Saratoga, then regressed a bit in her next start; has races ti get back to that would make her tough in here if she can pull a trip from the outside post. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:16 AQU 6th WILL SING FOR WINE (#2, 10-1) was returning from a long layoff when catching a sloppy track and failing to fir a good one last month as an MTO entrant; has won second off the layoff twice before; major player with his good race and he is tactical. -Mike Beer | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

2:53 WO 4th SILVER SMOKE (#3, 6-1) set a fast pace before tiring over an anti-speed track last time in a seven-furlong off-the-turf tilt. He was previously beaten a neck on the inner turf and may have found a field that he can wire in this 6 1/2-furlong Tapeta sprint. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:18 LRL 7th Curious to see what we get from NATHAN DETROIT (#2, 8-1) as he tries a true sprint for the first time in his 24-start career. Looked good winning here around two turns over the summer as he saved ground at the back, was on hold turning for home, angled outside and charged past the leaders. -Dan Illman | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

3:45 GG 2nd PICK BYMY FRIEND (#6, 8-1) drops to his lowest claiming level in this $5,000 race for maidens after mixed results in his last three starts. Pick Bymy Friend was second by a head and a nose in late August and mid-September, but was not a factor on Oct. 21 on turf after a wide trip. A return to the synthetic track and class relief could make the difference. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:15 GG 3rd TIP TOP GAL (#4, 10-1) has not won in a year, but did finish a fair second in an allowance race at six furlongs on Sept. 17. This appears to be a tougher field, but also one loaded with pace which will help Tip Top Gal's late run. She is well drawn in post 4 for that style. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:28 WO 7th TWIN CITY (#2, 12-1) placed in each of his first three outings, including the rich Simcoe Stakes, before graduating over 1 1/16 miles under Boulanger three weeks ago. His tactical speed might be as asset in this nine-furlong route for Canadian-breds, which seems wide open aside from the presence of favored PHILIP MY DEAR. -Ron Gierkink | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

4:37 GP 9th Not sure if MOPED DENNIS (#1, 8-1) wants to go this far or how he will handle running on a synthetic surface. However, if he runs as well as he did running on turf when he finished second to Brazillionare in a key race at Belmont that produced three next-out winners, he will be tough to handle. -Randy Goulding | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:15 GG 5th CIVIL SUIT (#1, 6-1) drops to her lowest claiming level in this $12,500 race for non-winners of two and the class relief may lead to her second win. Winless in six starts since May 2020, Civil Suit was a fair second in her 2022 synthetic track debut on Sept. 2. -Steve Andersen | Get PPs for this race | Bet this race with DRF Bets

5:28 WO 9th GREEN FLEET (#5, 12-1) lacked room on the turn before finishing on the edges last time in a seven-furlong sprint at this level in his first try off a $15K claim. Routing is his specialty and he should be prominent in the $25K claimer around two turns. -Ron Gierkink

Ararat Gold Cup Day best bets & quaddie tips | November 6, 2022

            What Ararat Cup Day
Where Ararat Turf Club – Cnr Western Highway and Geelong Rd, Ararat VIC 3377
            When Sunday, November 6, 2022
            First Race 1:30pm AEDT

            Visit Ladbrokes

On Sunday the Ararat Turf Club will host its annual Cup meeting, which will feature a very competitive eight-race card highlighted by the Ararat Gold Cup. The track is currently rated a Heavy 10, but with some good weather forecasted for central Victoria over Friday and Saturday, we should get into the Soft range by Sunday. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit, and racing gets underway at 1:30pm AEDT.
            Ararat Gold Cup Tip: Keats

The feature on Sunday will be the $80,000 Ararat Gold Cup and we believe that the Gavin Bedggood-trained Keats will be extremely hard to beat as the top weight in the race over 2000m. This five-year-old gelding has been very good since being transferred from Michael Moroney to Gavin Bedggood at the start of this campaign, winning three of his five starts this preparation. At his most recent start in the Peninsula Cup at Mornington, this son of Galileo was way too good for his rivals as he lead for the entirety of the 1600m event, taking out the feature race at Mornington by just over three lengths. With very little on-speed runners in this race on Sunday, Jarrod Fry should be able to push forward from barrier four and take up the lead uncontested, which will give this guy every chance to win.

            Race 6 – silks#1 Keats (4)

            5yo Gelding | T: Gavin Bedggood | J: Jarrod Fry (59kg)

            $2.10 with Bet365
            Best Bet: Pintoff

In race seven over 1200m in the Ararat Bowl, the Richard Cully-trained Pintoff looks to have found a race that is very winnable, as he drops back from Listed grade to a country handicap race. This six-year-old gelding was very unlucky in his first-up start in the Listed Caulfield Village Stakes where he box seated in the run, but never saw any clear air until the 150m mark and he worked home nicely along the inside fence, finishing 10th by just under three lengths. From barrier nine, Declan Bates will have to push forward and lead or sit just outside the leader upon settling. If this son of Toorak Toff can get to the front comfortably and roll along in a rhythm, he should be very hard to run down in the home straight.
            Best Bet

            Race 7 – silks#3 Pintoff (9)

            6yo Gelding | T: Richard Cully | J: Declan Bates (59.5kg)

            $11 with Bet365
            Best Value: Meiner Legacy

In the last race of the day over 1600m the Aaron Purcell-trained Meiner Legacy represents great value opening up at $15 with online Bookmakers for his second-up start, after winning his most recent start over 1400m at Casterton on October 24. This son of Rulership was very impressive when he burst through a gap with just under 100m to go and won quite soft on the line by half a length. This five-year-old gelding looks to have come back much better this preparation, returning in winning form to record win two at start 20. From barrier six, Linda Meech should be able to get into a good position in the mid-field one off the fence and look to stake his claim on the home turn out wide and hopefully record his third win of his career and second win in a row this preparation.

It’s Guyra Cup Day on Sunday afternoon, however we head to Armidale for this Country Cup meeting. We currently sit on a Heavy 9 for race-day, although we have some clearing days ahead, so there is hope we’re set for an upgrade heading into Sunday. The first race is scheduled for a start time of 1:46pm AEDT with the rail is in the True position for this seven-race program.
              Guyra Cup: Hyland Bay

Hyland Bay looks to make it three wins on the trot in Sunday’s Guyra Cup feature over the 1400m. He comes to this race in outstanding order and on a month freshen for this race after being too good BM66 company last start at Tamworth over the 2100m on October 6. He was powering to the line that day when winning impressively by 2.3-lengths and while the 1400m here looks a strange play by the Wayne Oakenfull team, his form at the trip isn’t anything to knock, and the wet track will play into his favour. Winona Costin should get on the back of the likely leader New World Tapestry, and from there, career win number four won’t look far away.
              Guyra Cup

              Race 6 – #7 Hyland Bay (2)

              $3.90 with Bet365
Best Bet at Armidale: Bonjour Rupert

We get the best of the day out of the way in the first race on Guyra Cup Day with the Brett Cavanough-trained maiden galloper Bonjour Rupert. He looks the clear progressive horse in this race with plenty of first starters in this field, plus a couple that haven’t shown much at the races, Bonjour Rupert’s one career start looks more than good enough for us to say he should be winning this contest over the 1100m. His first-up effort behind Shikanic at Muswellbrook on October 17 was terrific, after being forced to swing very wide turning for home he powered to the line to only be beaten 0.5 lengths. With a bit more luck and a better gate than first-up, this gelding by Winning Rupert should be too classy for this lot. Ashley Morgan should only need to find some cover mid-race and Bonjour Rupert should be getting his first win in stylish fashion.
              Best Bet

              Race 1 – #4 Bonjour Rupert (6)

              3yo Gelding | T: Brett Cavanough | J: Ashley Morgan (57.5kg)

              $1.35 with Neds
              Next Best at Armidale: Hoku

Hoku looks a cracking bet on Sunday afternoon in the third race on the card. This gelding by Zoustar has had nine opportunities to break his maiden status, and he’ll have no better chance than this 1400m contest. He looks ready to peak here after a solid effort last start behind Binkou at Newcastle on October 24, he was holding well along the rail turning for home, which in hindsight wasn’t where you wanted to be that day, staying on nicely behind a horse that looks an impressive type going forward. If he can replicate a similar effort here, his rivals don’t look to have form near this his best. Look for Rachael Murray to either lead or get leaders back from the soft barrier, and when asked Hoku should kick clear of his rivals to get his victory in career start number ten.
              Next Best

Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, November 6
Posted on November 4, 2022 by David Aragona

                RACE 5: COMMAND POINT (#12)

The short prices in this $30k conditioned claimer didn’t do much for me. Princess Blakely (#3) makes some sense after finishing third at a similar level in Saratoga, but she’s been out of action for a few months and hasn’t ever run a speed figure that makes her particularly formidable against this crew. I’m more intrigued by Diva Ready (#8) from that same race. Some will dismiss her based on her lone poor effort since then, but she got the wrong trip, racing 2-wide during a time when the rail bias on the inner turf at Saratoga was most pronounced. She was also going out for Rudy Rodriguez while his horses just weren’t performing up to par at Saratoga. She’s since been claimed by new connections and could be ready to rebound. However, I want to go in a different direction with another horse looking to get back on track. Command Point (#12) was running races last year for George Weaver that would put her on par with Control Function. It appears that she’s regressed since returning from a layoff for Rob Atras this year, but I think she’s run better than it appears in both recent outings. She was compromised by a slow pace in her return two back, and last time she got a poor trip through the final three furlongs, as she encountered significant traffic while attempting to launch a rally, shuffled back and shut off at multiple points. She’s better than that and can rebound here if able to work out a trip from this outside post position.

                RACE 6: FOUNDER (#5)

This optional claimer is one of the most wide open races of the day, as you can make valid cases for almost every runner in the field. Among the short prices, I don’t want Nabokov (#6), who was opportunistic last time when taking advantage of a fast pace to win on the turnback. I’m still not convinced that added distance helps him, and this is a big step up in class. The other two likely short prices are a bit more convincing. Kinetic Sky (#8) was always going to be a stretch to get the 1 3/16 miles last time in that off the turf affair, but he actually ran quite well to only miss by a nose after going wide on the turns. This turnback in distance should suit him, and I view him as the horse to beat. I would also use War Stopper (#3), who won at this level in an off the turf race last time out, though his solid recent form has come over sloppy tracks. Bill Mott has entered a pair of contenders in this race who both sport interesting profiles. Will Sing for Wine (#2)ran poorly behind War Stopper last time, but he had a right to need that race in his return from a lengthy layoff. He should appreciate getting back on a fast track and will be a factor if he can bounce back to any of his prior efforts. Yet the Mott horse that most intrigues me is Founder (#5). I’ve never been much of a fan of this horse racing on the turf, even though that’s where he’s spent the majority of his recent races. He just lacks the acceleration or turn of foot necessary to be successful in turf races. While he was considered a disappointment on the dirt after winning his debut so impressively as a 2-year-old, I actually think he ran well in a few starts after that. That third-place finish behind Mandaloun and Twilight Blue looks a lot better in retrospect, and his second-place to Wolfie’s Dynaghost in his last dirt start over a year ago was one of the best efforts of his career. I’m not sure that he’s going to get that much pace in here, but I do think he’s finally back in a spot where he can be successful.

                RACE 9: SIGNATOR (#3)

I’m not trying to beat likely favorite Signator (#3) in this Nashua. I’ve become a big fan of this horse based on the visual of his first couple of starts. He closed relentlessly in his 6-furlong debut despite racing in some traffic on the turn, hitting his best stride just as they crossed the wire before galloping out with enthusiasm. He then loved the stretch-out to a mile last time, overcoming a slow pace and angling inside of rivals before again finishing strongly through the stretch. He hasn’t yet run a particularly fast speed figure, but I get the sense that we haven’t nearly seen the best he has to offer yet. He doesn’t necessarily have to win this race to advance to the Remsen, where his true strengths are likely to be revealed, but he does seem ready to take this next step forward even going the one-turn mile. Looking beyond this start, he feels like a horse who could have a major say in some Derby preps next season, as a son of Tapit with a stamina-oriented female family. It’s still early, but I’m excited about this colt. That’s not say that this is an easy spot for him. Full Moon Madness (#1) seemed to be much more professional with the blinkers added last time, and finished up like a horse that may be ready for this stretch-out in distance. Champions Dream (#4) also showed potential on debut, but that race he won at Saratoga is looking a little weaker in retrospect. He may not have cared for the slop in the Champagne, but will have to produce a better performance to defeat the two aforementioned colts.

Rocket Picks : Aqueduct, Santa Anita Park, and Churchill Downs for November 6, 2022
                  By: Aaron Halterman

It’s time for another great Sunday of racing! For the free pick 4, we will head to Aqueduct for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Churchill Downs and Santa Anita Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Aqueduct:

                  Aqueduct November 6, 2022

                  Race 7: Maiden Special Weight

#7 McCullough debuts today for Chad Brown, with Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard, which is a good sign. He is working well leading up to this race today. #4 Cascais was a decent third on debut last time out for Brown and should move forward off of that race. He holds a strong hand in this spot.

                  Race 8: Allowance
                  freestar

#3 Waterville has hit the board in four straight starts coming into this race. This looks like the spot where she can get it done today for Clement. Clement also sends #7 New Ginya in this race, who has finished second in three straight starts against similar runners. Clement looks strong in here.

                  Race 9: Nashua Stakes (G3)

#4 Champions Dream drops down in class for this one after running against tougher runners in the Champagne Stakes last time out. #1 Full Moon Madness was great last time out going shorter and has a big shot if he stretches out well in distance today.

                  Race 10: Maiden Claiming

#3 What a Dude drops down in class today after running fairly well against open company last timeout. He nearly won at a similar level on debut. #5 Most Wanted Man has run third against similar runners in four straight starts. The drop in class should help his chances today.

                    ARMIDALE: RACE 1 @ 1:46 PM

BONJOUR RUPERT (4) looked to have plenty of ability when a close-up third at Muswellbrook on debut and will have derived a lot of benefit from that race day experience. Strikes a very winnable contest here and is sure to be right there at the business end. DUBLINER BOY (1) was a touch plain last time out at Tamworth but go on the solid second there the run prior. Looms as the main danger. LUVDALOOT (2) strips fitter third-up from the spell and gets 3kg weight relief with the claim. Top-three conveyance. FLYING MIRACLE (5) is at the races for the first time but won't need to be a superstar to be competitive against this lot. Respect any market confidence. LYTABLAZE (3) best of the rest. SELECTIONS: #4 Bonjour Rupert to win.

                    ARARAT: RACE 6 @ 4:25 PM

HUNBOSHI (2) capped two excellent placings with a determined win in town last start. It would be no surprise to see her go close again from a forward position in the run. HIGH FEROCITY (8) has good ability on his day and is racing well having finished close up behind King's Charisma last start. Shapes as a major threat. TAKUMI (10) has placed at his past two starts and although he hasn't won for a while he isn't without a hope with Meech on and dropping to the minimum. SELECTIONS: Backing #2 Hunboshi.

                    WARREN: RACE 6 @ 4:30 PM

SEGUSO (6) is a promising lightly-raced type who's ready to return. Change of scenery for this gelding, making the change from Grahame Begg to the in-form Cody Morgan stable. Has enjoyed a bright start to his career and returns over a preferred trip from a favourable draw. Hard to knock. MORGENSTERN (8) has returned in great order, scoring back-to-back wins. Leading hoop C Gallagher sticks after partnering in last two and is yet to miss the frame over this distance - including three wins. Big danger. ACTIVATION (4) has run good races fresh, without winning. 1/1 at the track and has been readied for this with a Coonamble trial win. Can run a big race. SELECTIONS: Backing #6 Seguso to win.

                    BENALLA: RACE 7 @ 5:08 PM

SESTILLIA (9) returns from a spell today and looks to have found a winnable race with the claim and good draw. Has won first-up in the past and has excellent stats at this trip. Go close. ESPECIAL COURAGE (8) drops in grade here and recent runs have been solid. Ran right through the line late when fourth over 1200m at Mornington on October 30. Likely to drift back from the gate and be saved for one big run. Serious player. GOJAZZ (2) returned from a spell with an encouraging second over 1000m at Warracknabeal on October 25. Has a good second-up record and this his favoured trip. Can go one better here. O'REG (5) has improve sharply at his last two outings with minor placings in similar grade. Gets back in his races and gives every indication the 1206m will suit. No surprise to see him take a hand in the finish. SELECTIONS: #9 Sestillia to win.

                    GAWLER: RACE 7 @ 5:15 PM

PRINCE TIKEA (4) finished third in the City at Listed level and has been given time to get over that effort. He resumes here at a shorter trip but should still be too good for his opposition. Clearly on top. CHELIMO (5) has drawn to do no work early and has won once this preparation at Gawler three runs back. He is likely to race close to the pace from his perfect draw and is worth including in all combinations. ORDER IS RESTORED (11) has put together a brace of third placings and will enjoy the step up in trip. He is peaking third up and won't be far away. SANDPIPER (13) ran an improved race finishing midfield last start at this track and is up to a more suitable distance for this assignment. Watch closely. SELECTIONS: Prince Tikea win bet.

                    YORK: RACE 8 @ 7:55 PM

A few genuine chances in the Cup. BILLY RAY (3) brings two close up efforts from Ascot in 72 grade and has trialled sharply at Lark Hill since last seen 15 days ago. Peaks now over 320m longer and it's hard to go past the CJP-Durrant linkage. CRESCENT CITY (8) is in good hands and also brings strong city form. Was beaten a lip at Ascot two-back and that reads particularly well. THAT'S FUNNY AZ (4) is much better than the form-line suggests. Rates well off the latest at Ascot but draws wide and has to come back in trip. NATIVE CHIMES (6) missed a whisker in the Kalgoorlie Cup from the front and then folded up at Ascot. May be worth another chance. SELECTIONS: Going with #3 Billy Ray.

Sunday Racing Tips: Sandown, November 6th
                      Stephen Harris Horse Racing Expert

Today’s Horse Racing Tips November 6th

There are 4 meetings in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with jumps racing dominating and quality action from Cork, Ffos Las and Sandown. On the flat there are some huge fields at Naas for the punters to study, with four handicaps and an interesting listed contest at 2.57pm the highlight.

                      In this article:

                      Sandown 1:25 (UK time)

Paul Nicholls has his team in absolutely blistering form at the moment, and his 6-y-o is fancied to get his chasing career back on track at Sandown on Sunday. He has so far failed to win in four previous runs over the larger obstacles, but those have come in relatively warm company, and this represents a marked drop down in class under the red hot Harry Cobden.

                      Odds: NA

                      Volkovka

                      Sandown 3:05 (UK time)

Fergal O’Brien’s tough and consistent mare has won 3 of her 12 races over hurdles, and returns to the fray here from a reasonable handicap mark with conditions to suit. She has an excellent record fresh and has run well at this stiff track in the past (cracking second last December), so everything looks in place for her to pounce late if enjoying a smooth run through from rear under the promising 3lb claimer Liam Harrison.

                      Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am November 6th Odds may now differ.

By Matt Shifman and Bob Ehalt

                          Hot List Key:
A: A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worse
                          * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race [Md 75000, 1 1/6 mi TURF] – (6) Tall Girl will drop into a maiden claimer for the first time in her fourth start. She finished in the top three in all three starts and this could be her last chance to run on the grass in New York this year. (7) Words of Praise was third in her debut at Kentucky Downs and then was sixth at Keeneland with both of those in maiden special weights. (9) Cookie Crumbs has also had two starts with a second at BAQ last time for Todd Pletcher and now drops in for a tag for the first time. (8) Addressable Market made one start and that was at Monmouth Park as the favorite where she was fourth.

3rd race [Tempted, 1 mi] – (4) Good Sam was an easy winner in her first start for Chad Brown at odds of 4-1 on a sloppy track last month at the BAQ meeting. (2) Binsky broke her maiden in her second start after the daughter of Curlin stretched out to run a mile for Linda Rice. (6) Rosie’s Alibi shipped down to Parx and broke her maiden for Todd Pletcher and My Racehorse. (3) Foggy Night finished second to Rosie’s Alibi and then came right back at Parx to win by 11 lengths.

4th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 1/6 mi TURF] – (5) Scramble (C) was bet down for 7-1 to 7-2 and just missed the win by a neck in his second start after running third in his debut. (2) Confronted was second by a head in his first start behind a horse that came back to win again for Bill Mott. (1) Fly Right lost his debut by a neck at 7-1 and then ran back in the Pilgrim (G2) at BAQ on a yielding turf course where she set the pace and faded to the back. (9) Ari Gold has a pair of fourth-place finishes. Last time he ran on a sloppy track after the race came off the turf. Pletcher puts the blinkers on him now.

9th race [Nashua (G3), 1 mi] – (3) Signator broke his maiden in start number two by more than four lengths last month at BAQ. The son of Tapit sold for $1.7 million in April. (1) Full Moon Madness was a winner on the front end on a sloppy track at BAQ after a pair of thirds at Saratoga. (4) Champions Dream won his first at Saratoga by 2 lengths and then tried the Champagne (G1) which was run on a sloppy track. Irad Ortiz gets on board this son of Justify. (2) Torrone won his first start at Monmouth by two lengths as a heavy favorite for Kelly Breen. They tried the turf in a stakes race and then got third in an allowance at Laurel. He gets blinkers on.

Best bets: Good Sam (3rd); Signator (9th). Best value: Tall Girl (1st); Scramble (4th).

1st race – (5) Job’s Not Finished (D) dropped from 8-5 to 6-5 and failed to fire. Finds a field she can handle here. (6) Peaceful Moment should find the going easier here. 7th race – (5) Send for Me has not raced since winning her debut nearly a year ago, but his works make him an intriguing play. (7) Portilla missed by a head last time and is the one to fear. (8) She’s All Class won nicely last time and can make her presence felt. (3) Cancel This was third in her last two starts and should not be ignored. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-7-8.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 1-Weegee
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Five of the seven entrants in this starter allowance nine furlong turf affair exit the same race, and of those five, Weegee who was a bit unlucky when finishing second by a nose, ran the best of the lot. In this race, the Jeff Mullins-trained gelding moves from the extreme outside (nine of nine) to the rail and is therefore guaranteed an ideal second flight, ground-saving trip, so rather than spread the race let’s just take a stand and use him at 5/2 on the morning line in the win pool and as a rolling exotic single.

Main ticket: (in order of preference): 5-Talkative Gal; 2-Wild Arch
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Talkative Gal lands the cozy outside post, has finished first or second in three of five career outings over the local main track, makes a major jockey switch to Ramon Vasquez for new trainer Milton Pineda, and can win with a repeat of her solid runner-up effort for $10,000 a couple of weeks ago. Wild Arch, second in three of her last four starts, may not be one to trust (she’s 2-for-21) but in this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 claiming sprint the daughter of Arch is a contender. Perhaps most effective when held up early and allowed to run late, she should settle somewhere in mid-pack and then have her chance from the quarter pole home.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Octopus; 6-Senor Jobim
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Octopus has been quite popular at the claim box of late, having changed hands in four of his last five starts. He’s in Jeff Mullins’ barn now but is dropping from $40,000 to $32,000 after finishing a no-excuse fifth of eight in his most recent outing in August at Del Mar. Though the pattern isn’t healthy, Mullins is superb with the first-off-the-claim angle (26%, massive ROI), so we’re expecting the veteran son of Shackleford to bounce back in a big way and return to winning form over a main track he’s always preferred (four wins from nine starts). Also worth tossing in is Senor Jobim, a winner of 10 races in his career and making his second start after being claimed by Jonathan Wong two races back. From where he’s drawn outside, the son of Distorted Humor should draft into a comfortable pace prompting position and then have his chance to seal the deal when it matters.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Tripoli; 1-Azul Coast
                              Backups/Savers: none

Forecast: Tripoli once was good enough to win the Pacific Classic-G1, but while those days are probably gone the John Sadler-trained son of Kitten’s Joy should still have enough in the tank to beat this second level allowance optional claiming band. After competing in a series of graded stakes races, he’ll welcome the class relief and likely will get his confidence back against a group he seems likely to outclass. Azul Coast is another stakes winner trying to find his proper level in his second start off a long layoff. Fifth in the Awesome Again S.-G1 in his first outing since December, the Bob Baffert-trained son of Super Saver is winless in six starts over the Santa Anita main track but should be able to at least hit the board.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 13-Rhythem On Stage; 1-Workday; 2-Moon Ice
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Rhythem On Stage trained like he could run a bit prior to his debut but didn’t make any impact in a grass miler against an infinitely better group than he’s facing today. The route-to-sprint angle is in full affect for a barn that has solid stats with second timers, and from his outside draw the Carla Gaines-trained colt should have clear sailing and every chance in this six furlong turf sprint. At or near his morning line of 8-1, he’s an enticing gamble. Workday didn’t run badly in his debut at Los Alamitos when closing with some interest to be third in a five furlong dash in July and returns in a winnable spot for a stable that has terrific stats with layoff runners. His John Sadler-trained stablemate, Moon Ice, was considered good enough to debut in a Cal-bred stakes race at Del Mar, and while he finished last of six (beaten 27 lengths), the son of He Be Fire N Ice returns protected and picks up the stable’s “go to” rider Juan Hernandez, so we’ll give him another chance.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 3-Loud Loud Music; 7-Remember Sue
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Loud Loud Music returns to dirt and plummets to the bottom while switching to a 7-lb. bug boy in order to receive a much needed weight break in this $10,000 claiming middle distance affair for fillies and mares. At 9/5 on the morning line, the daughter of Tizbud has little to beat but at that price there’s really no value to be found. Remember Sue is a Bay Area invader in the Jonathan Wong barn fresh from a good win for $12,500 over the all-weather surface in mid-September. She’s unproven on conventional dirt, but if she runs back to her last start she certainly can beat this field. We’ll try to get by using just these two in rolling exotic play.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 1-Katerini; 5-Dear Beau; 7-Very Scary
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Katerini finished a solid runner-up in a similar maiden $50,000 turf sprint for fillies and mares last month and if she breaks cleanly and secures a good pace-pressing trip along the rail the Mark Glatt-trained filly should be able to handle this soft assignment. Dear Beau, a respectable third in the same race that Katerini exits, doesn’t possess any early speed but she can finish a bit and may be heard from in the final stages. Very Scary is a nine race maiden turning back from a series two-turn outings and seems likely to enjoy this shorter trip. Her numbers make her competitive, so at 5-1 on the morning line she’s worth including on your ticket.

Main ticket (in order of preference): Hero Status; 8-Street Ruckus
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Hero Status earned a strong, career-top speed figure when beating maidens at Del Mar a couple of months ago and returns on the raise wearing blinkers for the first time in this entry-level allowance main track miler. It’ll be interesting to see if the equipment change has the desired effect; if it does, the son of Flatter could find himself as the controlling speed in a race that on paper doesn’t have much of it. Street Ruckus has finished in the frame in his last three starts at this level and should be within range throughout. He’s reunited with “win rider” Juan Hernandez and his recent speed figures are better than par for this level.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 2-Lane Way; 4-Turn On The Jets
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: Lane Wayhas found his niche as a late-running turf sprinter and with some pace up front and clear sailing into the lane the Richard Mandella-trained gelding should be along in time in this Hillside dash for second-level allowance older horses. Fast on figures and with a sharp recent race over this course and distance, the son of Into Mischief looks solid and is deserving of his 9/5 morning line favorite status. Turn On The Jets also finished second down the hill last time out but to be truthful he squandered a perfect trip as the favorite and was worn down late in a bit of a disappointing effort. He’s slower on numbers than our top pick but is lightly raced with plenty of room to improve, so we’ll toss him in as well.

Main ticket (in order of preference): 11-In Vronskys Style; 6-Moose Mitchell
                              Backups/savers: none

Forecast: We’ll double the finale, six furlong turf sprint over the flat course for first level allowance state-bred company. In Vronsky Style cut out hot splits before being nailed late in a tough beat against similar rivals down the hill last month but may be able to stick it out today from his good outside draw that should allow for a more comfortable stalking trip. Moose Mitchell, a close third in that same race, is the one to fear most. The Danzing Candy gelding has finished first or second in eight of 16 career starts and may be tough to catch if allowed to sneak away during the early stages without being pressured.
