SMU (7:30PM ET ESPN) – It’s a PERFECT 4-0 sweep in College Football last weekend and I’m back at the top of the leaderboard as the #1 handicapper at WagerTalk in units gained across college and pro football this season. Last week a Thursday night 5% MAX win in the NFL with Panthers +3 set the tone and I’ll head to the college gridiron to do the same here when the #21 Tulane Green Wave take on the SMU Mustangs at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Admittedly I’m surprised that +4’s have started to pop up some places because I thought if anything this would have went back to +3. With that being said, I think the reason for that is the lopsided handle in favor of Tulane so I’m still just as confident with my 5% move on SMU as I was when I released it earlier this week. SMU is FINALLY playing like the team I thought they would be this season, the Mustangs are 4-1 in their last five games and the one they lost was a 29-27 setback to Cincinnati in a game where we cashed a 4% BEST BET on SMU +3. Knowing I wanted to oppose teams like Cincinnati, Houston and UCF in the AAC this season I actually had these two teams pegged as teams that would breakout as a “contrarian” winner in the AAC. Tulane was in the best position until they lost on this field to UCF last weekend, it was their first conference loss and a “bubble burst” of sorts since it likely cost Tulane a chance at being the top Group of 5 team. There is such a thing as “losing a game twice” and Tulane could be a candidate for that here as the Green Wave were dominated by UCF on their home field in a game they were very much hyped up to win. Tulane followed their huge win at Kansas State with a dud, losing as a double digit favorite to Southern Miss, and I won’t be at all surprised if last week’s emotionally draining loss to UCF is followed by a lackluster performance from the Green Wave here.

SMU is the team that SHOULD be coming in with hype, the Mustangs have scored 45, 77 and 41 respectively in three straight wins but I haven’t heard a positive word uttered about the Mustangs so far this week. The betting public is laying the points with Tulane like they already know the score and I simply don’t agree with the Green Wave being significantly better than SMU here. SMU’s offense has been unstoppable of late and, given the dynamics of football, the current number means if SMU trails by 10 late with the ball (which I see as a worst case scenario) they will still have a great chance to cash this ticket. SMU has figured out how to run the ball consistently to complement the play of quarterback Tanner Mordecai which has given the Mustangs the top scoring offense in the AAC. Tulane really hasn’t faced great offense this season, Kansas State was still breaking in a new quarterback when the Wave upset the Wildcats and Houston had big issues on offense when Tulane knocked off the Cougars back in September. Tulane finally did run into a respectable UCF offense last week and gave up 468 yards on their way to a loss that was more lopsided than the final score suggests. SMU turned it over a ton during their three game losing streak earlier this season but the Mustangs have cleaned it up on offense and it’s a big reason they continue to end up on the right side of these high scoring games. Tulane can score which means this could very well be a shootout but I’m willing to take my chances that SMU can go score for score enough to at least stay within the number here.

This is a massive game for both teams in what is still a wide open title race in the AAC. If SMU wins they will have the same record as Tulane while 5-1 Cincinnati plays Tulane on the final weekend of the season. SMU finishes their season at home against Memphis so the Mustangs pulling the mild upset in NOLA tonight means there’s a realistic chance SMU ends up on the right side of a likely tiebreaker and in the AAC title game. Things were cruising right along for Tulane until they were derailed by UCF last week and I’m just not so sure the Green Wave are able to get off the mat here. The masses expect a Tulane bounce back, I just don’t see it for the Green Wave against one of the best offenses they will see all season and I’ll grab the generous number in a game that should be close and likely ends in a SMU outright win.
