Game Notes: This is a match day 1 meeting and I will be looking at spots throughout the opening fixtures regarding totals and under plays that offer specific types of value. While most aren't fans of an under play we can't ignore the fact that there are some participating countries in this tournament that don't have the player quality of others and thus play a defensive-minded games. This was evident during the 2018 WC in Russia where Iran were in a group that including Spain and Portugal who both are offensive-minded teams and those meetings ended with Iran playing to a 1-1 draw (Portugal) and a 1-0 loss (Spain). I don't see them scoring here and while England has plenty of talent, getting to 3 might be difficult.

We're taking Iran plus the goal and a half headstart on Monday to keep things tight against England in Group B's opening game.

Full Breakdown

England have never been particularly fast starters at tournaments, needing a late injury-time winner to squeeze past Tunisia in their opening game of World Cup 2018, famously crashing out in last place with zero wins in World Cup 2014, drawing with both USA and Algeria in their first two games of World Cup 2010, and even in last summer's Euro's, didn't beat any group opponent by more than one goal, including a 0-0 draw against Scotland also.

Iran meanwhile proved just how difficult they are to beat in 2018's World Cup, securing a draw against Portugal in the final group game and narrowly missing out on qualification, and since then have arguably got even stronger as a unit.

With players like FC Porto's Mehdi Taremi, Bayer Leverkusen's Sardar Azmoun, and Feyenoord's Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Iran have the capability to cause England's defense problems here, and in qualification, they finished top of the group also allowing just 0.4 goals against per game with their only loss coming on the road against a very good South Korea team.

With regional advantage here for the Iranians with the World Cup being played in the Middle East, a climate advantage, and with this being the first game of the group against notoriously slow starters England, we believe getting +1.5 here on Iran is simply too much and we're happy to take a piece of them plus the generous headstart on Monday to cover against England.

Iran will not be an easy out and they will absolutely setup defensively for this match which will be tough for England to break them down. Iran played three tough matches in the 2018 group stage, with a 1-0 loss to Spain, a 1-1 draw with Portugal and a 1-0 over Morocco. They also have played well coming into this World Cup with a 1-0 win over Uruguay, 1-1 draw with Senegal and 2-1 loss to Algeria.

The same can't be said for England who are winless in six matches. The Three Lions are best defensively and only scored two goals in the group stage at the Euros. This group is likely to play out similarly in all the matches as one goal will make the difference for who qualifies and who doesn't.
