Fair Grounds 6th Race – Post time: 3:45 CT
4-Bartulia (3-1)

Was a willing third in his debut last month at Horseshoe Indianapolis in a better-than-average race for maiden special weight 3-year-olds while appearing something less than cranked up, so we’re expecting this sophomore gelding to produce a significant forward move for a barn that hits at a remarkable 30% with second-time starters. The son of Creative Cause catches a field without much speed in this middle distance affair, so we’re expecting the Brad Cox-trained sophomore to be on or near the lead throughout. He’s a fit on speed figures as it is, so with any kind of improvement he should be hard to beat while offering good wagering value at or near his morning line of 3-1.

Fair Grounds 8th race – Post time: 4:45 CT
5-Cushee (9/2)

The known element doesn’t impress, so let’s go with a well-regarded newcomer in this moderate maiden two-turn main track event for juvenile fillies. The daughter of Curlin is a half- sister to Grade-1 winner American Patriot and to two other stakes performers, and was produced by a full-sister to Dubai World Cup S.-G1 winner Well Armed, so she has the bloodlines to justify her yearling purchase price of $775,000. The Michael Stidham barn has solid stats with debut runners and the work tab should have her fit enough, so at 9/2 on the morning line she’s worth a play in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

The final Friday card at Hoosier Park this year has 13 races scheduled with the feature coming in Race 10 an Open 1/Open 2 Pace with a $22,000 purse. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 also starts in Race 10, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 10

1-Rockin Speed (20-1)-Started moving on the last turn right into a strong headwind in the 1st start in the Rucker barn versus Open 3 company. Steps up and should be a large price but is the 3rd leading money winners for 2022 in this field and Widger sticks. Looking for a big effort for new connections and would also use underneath.
5-Crusher Q (5-1)-Winner of 3 straight didn't wilt in last week's headwind and at 5-1 it's best to not overlook.
6-Saddle Up (3-1)-Was racing in another zip code at the 1/2 pole and rallied to finish a close 2nd last week. This 4-year-old needs a quick pace and a sharp steer from Wilfong, and both can happen.

Race 11

3-Rogers Image (5/2)-Missed a start and Putnam is down as trainer as Burke was suspended and he knows this 4-year-old well. Has been facing tougher and should be a main player.
5-Crooked Smile (3-1)-Recent form has been dull but takes a significant drop to the same class as a win on 9-30. The Wilson barn has been cold, but this could be a spot to take an overdue picture.

Race 12

1-ER Super Shady (9/2)-Came the back half in 57.1 on his own against the headwind with what looked like a broken hopple. That was the best effort in quite a while. Does not start in a hurry but should come away much closer to the lead this time and can offer a square price.
7-Ms Quick Sand (4/5)-The headwinds may not have been as strong late in the card but there is no denying that was a sharp gate to wire win last week. Still is only 1-17 and is a 4-5 morning line chalk. That price is tough to swallow but best to not leave off the ticket.

Race 13

4-Numbered Account (5-1)-Here is another who was well behind at the half and rolled by everyone down the lane. That was the 1st win at Hoosier in 6 tries and should fit well with this crew. Could win right back and the price should be right to take a swing.
8-Mayhem Hanover (4-1)-Rallied after having to go 3 wide on the turn and closed nicely down the lane. Starts outside which may help the price and not necessarily hurt chances for a picture. Likes to come off a helmet and Tetrick should have this Cullipher trainee in striking range.

Friday, December 9

Laurel Park’s Late Pick 4 this Friday, Dec. 9, will span four distances on the main track – 5-1/2F, 6F, 7F and 1-1/16 miles. Solve the 50-cent wager and you’ll have a nice stocking stuffer for the holidays. Here’s a closer look at the action:

LRL 6th race (2:56 EST) -- CAPTAIN QUINT stalked a fast pace and was no factor in a MSW sprint, but he looms a major danger on the class drop in his first try at 7F. The pace-setting runner-up in that race, Mr. Cash, came back with a wire-to-wire MSW victory at Tampa. NOTIMELIKEPRESENT ran well in the same spot when claimed two starts ago, but he drifted on the turn and in the stretch to compromise his winning chances. The race produced two next-out winners and three runners-up. GIG gets Lasix and gets in light-weighted for his debut. His dam was 4-for-5 going a route of ground to start her career, so GIG could rally into a projected lively pace at a price.

LRL 7th race (3:27 EST) -- SHE IS WISKY swung 5-wide for the stretch drive two starts back at this distance, but she settled for third behind Bandits Warrior (3-11, $135k) and Noble Bid (3-8, $124k). R B’S STAR, hounded on the lead by the 14-1 upsetter at 7F, battled bravely but gave way late. She won twice at 5-1/2F this summer and can bounce back.

LRL 8th race (3:58 EST) -- ICY STARE DOWN goes from one top barn to another and worked in :48 flat over the track last Friday, earning a spot on the ticket at her winning distance. WINKED pressed the runner-up on a sloppy track, surged clear in mid-stretch and continued strong on the gallop out in the top effort of her career.

LRL 9th race (4:29 EST) – CIRCLING THE DRAIN took aim at the 7-1 winner at the quarter-mile pole but settled for second best in his 7F debut in MSW company. The added ground should be no problem for the son of multiple Grade I-winning router West Coast. GAMING SOUL also has the bloodlines and trainer to win at first asking. His sire, Frosted, was a multiple Grade I winner of $3.9 million and his dam, Mariisima, was 11-for-18 and multiple Grade I-winning router in Panama.

Charles Town - Race #7

#8 Violent Rock	He might offer a mid-range price in here with a decent tracking trip waiting for him, and he outran his odds at Aqueduct last out, giving him a big claim on this with something similar.
#3 Debit Card	He turned in a quick maiden win at 25/1 at Laurel last time out, and he now shows up for his local debut while trying two turns for the first time. Forward player may have a little company at a likely short kind of price.
#1 Benny the Book	He might take some heat early, but I don't think there is a ton of depth in this spot, and he seems likely enough to land an underneath share.
Race Summary	Violent Rock has some good tactical pace and has been well traveled this year, including a good effort in New York last time around that stacks up really well here if he's able to hold form.

Charles Town - Race #8

#5 Love to Zoom	Not sure if he's even fast enough to win this, but I think he's in line for a good trip from close range while stepping up in class, and I love how reliable his recent form has been.
#8 Jamestown Road	She gets back into an easier spot off the modest effort last out, and her previous form included a lot of reliable efforts that stack up nicely with this bunch.
#2 Grace Elizabeth	She has the kind of style that might leave her running one-paced through most of this, but that might be enough to land another underneath piece after a good try with similar last out.
Race Summary	Love to Zoom might be an okay price while stepping up in class, and he's the kind of persistent pressing/spying type who might get first jump on the more committed pace players.

Charles Town - Race #9

#11 Playing Gold	He's interesting if he goes here while cutting back around one turn, and he has occasionally shown a little bit of finishing ability that makes him somewhat appealing in a spot with a lot of cheap forward players.
#3 Motivated Speaker	He has had 13 chances already, but a handful of those more recent tries look competitive with this group, and he typically offers a pretty solid price.
#1 Mi Gusto Es	Special weight dropper turned in a pretty solid effort in his local debut last time out, so I'm not totally sure why he plunges in for $5,000 today with bigger pots available. That said, he's about to turn seven and has made just two career starts, so maybe the team is just happy to take what they can get with him right now.
Race Summary	Playing Gold is in flat form, but he might be able to run on late at this short trip while turning back. Guessing the price will be playable, too.
