Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Sunday, December 18
Posted on December 17, 2022 by David Aragona

    RACE 5: WATASHA (#8)

Curlin’s Wisdom (#9) is clearly the one to beat in this N1X allowance affair, which is a split division of today’s eighth race. He has really blossomed this fall for Linda Rice, finishing in the exacta in each of his last 5 starts, including a 3-race winning streak as he skipped through his New York-bred allowance conditions. He put forth one of his finest efforts two back when he just missed in the Empire Classic, and he maintained solid form last time despite settling for second at this level. However, I am a little concerned about the turnback in distance to a mile. He seems to have achieved his best results since he stretched out to 9 furlongs, making full use of his ample stamina. It’s unclear if he can be as effective over this shorter distance, and there are some worthy rivals in this spot. The biggest wild card is Up to the Mark (#6), who will seek to get back on track after a couple of disappointing efforts. I won’t be too hard on him for his 9-furlong loss two back when he was facing a better field for this level and chased an honest pace. Yet he didn’t have an apparent excuse last time when he was uncharacteristically sluggish on the turnback to 7 furlongs. I do get a little worried when these Todd Pletcher runners lose their early speed, but this colt clearly has the ability to beat a field like this with his good effort. I just want to go in a different direction with another lightly raced option. Watasha (#8) makes his first start off an auction purchase for $120k and trainer switch to Bill Mott after starting his career with Chad Brown. He took a couple of races to figure things out, but he seemed to put it all together when he returned from a layoff this fall, showing improved early speed to dominate a field of maidens over this track. He was also flattered when runner-up Southern Flag came back to win with a 109 TimeformUS Speed Figure. He disappointed when he stepped up to this level last time, but the trip just didn’t work out. He broke a step slowly and was bumped soon after the start, relegating him to the back of the pack. He made a decent move into contention on the far turn, but was always out of position. I like this stretch-out to a mile, since he can make better use of his tactical speed from this outside post position. He’s certainly bred to go this far, as a half-brother to 29-time dirt route winner Our Caravan and marathon runner Muralist.

    RACE 8: GULFSTREAM WAY (#2)

Likely favorite Money Supply (#4) has arguably been a bit of a disappointment since winning that debut so impressively, closing with a rush from off the pace. While he hasn’t won since then, he has consistently performed well in his last few starts at this level. He got the wrong trip at Churchill Downs two back when encountering significant traffic trouble, and returned from a brief layoff last time to follow home the talented but enigmatic Winit. A repeat of that performance may get the job done here, but it’s not as if he has some huge edge for a horse that could be a pretty short price. I’m trying to beat him with Gulfstream Way (#2). This Kentucky shipper was in great form when he got claimed for $50k earlier this year, and maintained that form for the Chris Hartman barn. Since winning two races in a row, he’s been unable to do better than garner minor awards at this N1X allowance level. And some might view his first start for the Brad Cox stable last time as a step in the wrong direction. However, that was a seriously tough spot, as winner Seal Beach earned a 113 TimeformUS Speed Figure, and other also-rans in that field had strong form coming in. I also didn’t think he got the best ride that day, as Florent Geroux squandered an opportunity to secure the front end, riding his horse conservatively down the backstretch. I would like to see Kendrick Carmouche get more aggressive here, since there isn’t that much pace signed on. One other runner that I would want to use at a bigger price is Luni Sima (#9). It’s possible that his best days are behind him, as he didn’t run well last time. Yet now he’s stretching out to a more appropriate distance, and he didn’t get the best ride when he tried this level going a mile two back.

    RACE 9: NANTASKET BEACH (#4)

This oversubscribed starter allowance affair is arguably the most interesting race on the card. The 9-furlong distance complicates the tasks of a few contenders drawn towards the outside, since there isn’t much of a run into that clubhouse turn. That’s the biggest problem for Tonal Impact (#11), who is seeking his fourth win in a row off the Linda Rice claim. This runner is capable of producing a strong finish, and has been beating progressively tougher competition over his last few starts. Linda Rice is 27 for 80 (34%, $2.10 ROI) first off the claim in dirt routes at Aqueduct over the past 5 years, but the horse is exiting some pretty strong barns in Kentucky. I acknowledge he’s a contender, but felt that better value could be found elsewhere. Fromanothamutha (#9) and Mo Rewards (#1) exit the same $40k conditioned claimer on Nov. 13. Some may be inclined to take Mo Rewards out of that race, since he stumbled badly at the start and did make a nice move to get back into contention before settling for third. Yet I still believe he’s more of a turf horse and question this stretch-out in distance. I find Fromanothamutha more intriguing, since his early speed figures to play well in this spot, especially if Jorge Vargas gets aggressive from this outside post position. Contrary to the way he’s been campaigned, I think added distance is better form him, and his last effort suggests he may be rounding into form. Yet I’m also intrigued by two runners who are based at other circuits. Gut Feeling (#3) was a game winner of a maiden claimer back in September at Churchill Downs. That 104 TimeformUS Speed Figure that he earned is better than any of Tonal Impact’s recent numbers, and he was flattered when runner-up Floki’s Flight came back to win two in a row with ascending speed figures. I think he’s dangerous making his first start off the claim for JKX Racing. My top pick is Nantasket Beach (#4), who is drawn just to his outside. It’s possible that this gelding is simply a turf horse, as he has improved since getting on that surface. Yet there’s plenty of dirt in his pedigree, as his Holy Bull-sired dam is a half-sister to Preakness winner Red Bullet. He handled dirt in his career debut, and I suspect he’s just improved overall since being gelded and stretching out in distance. He finished powerfully over soft turf to break his maiden two back, and ran surprisingly well, albeit with a great trip, in the Hill Prince last time. I think Chuck Lawrence has found a good spot for him to try this surface, where he can make use of his stamina. He drew a favorable post position and figures to be a square price.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (December 18)

Sunday’s racing is at Seoul (11 races from 10:45 to 18:00) and at Busan (6 races from 12:15 to 16:40). The program at both tracks includes a number of trophy races for big prize money as part of the Retired Racehorse Benefit day. These are essentially just normal races at between class 5 and class 3 level (as noted below in the comments). Here are the previews:

Race 5 at Busan marks Winner’s Man’s Korea Cup and Grand Prix victories (Pic: KRA)

      Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile filly maidens in the opener and there are plenty of promising ones among them. Stepping up to 1200M for the first time, (9) MAESTRA gets the nod. She was 3rd in both her previous starts, both at 1300M, first by leading and then by settling back and running on. Moon Se-young continues aboard and today can be her day. (11) NAOL HAENGBOK ran 2nd in a fast time on a wet track over 1000M on debut on November 13th settling handy and running on. She draws a touch wide for comfort here, but the trip can suit, and she can challenge. (1) TOUCH CHARM is the big winner from the draw. She was a strong 3rd on debut over 1000M on November 26th and is another who can appreciate the additional furlong. Plenty of others in the hunt including (7) DASI TAEEONADO and the first-time starter and trial winner (4) WONDERFUL SLEW.
Selections (9) Maestra (11) Naol Haengbok (1) Touch Charm (7) Dasi Taeeonado
      Next Best 4, 2
      Fast Start 1, 5, 11, 9

      Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

      (3) CHOEGANG MIRAE debuted without distinction back in April and then didn’t return until the end of October, only beating two home over 1300M. He had won a trial just the week before in a quick time demonstrating that he has some speed and was an improved 5th when tried at this distance on December 3rd. He draws much better here and third-up this could be his day. (4) TWO ACE has a runner-up finish to his name over this distance two starts back when coming from off the pace and followed up with a 4th at his most recent outing. An apprentice takes 3kg off his back and he should be going close. (8) MIRACLE K beat a couple of these on her way to 4th at this distance on November 20th having led for much of the way around and that’s enough to bring her into contention here. (12) DAESEUNG GAON and (9) GOLD KAISER among others in the minor money hunt.
Selections (3) Choegang Mirae (4) Two Ace (8) Miracle K (12) Daeseung Gaon
      Next Best 9, 5
      Fast Start 3, 5, 8, 9

After three consecutive runner-up finishes, it’s about time (11) PURGE DAY won. He has finished 2nd from the front, as he did two starts back at class level, and he has finished 2nd settling back after a slow start and running on, as he did on his first try at this class on October 29th. That latter performance was fast and suggests the wide draw won’t be an issue as he steps up to this distance for the first time. (7) MENI ACE comes up in class and in distance following a maiden win over 1200M on November 12th when for the first time he was on or close to the pace throughout. He carries a light weight, can sit handy here and can run on to challenge again. (10) TOHO SKY comes in having finished a respectable midfield in Listed Nonghyup Chairman’s Cup for juveniles a month ago. He had previously run out a winner in a good time at 1200M and should go close in this company. (2) BICHUICA and (9) WONDERFUL INDY are among others in at least the placing frame.
Selections (11) Purge Day (7) Meni Ace (10) Toho Sky (2) Bichuica
      Next Best 9, 6
      Fast Start 3, 6, 10, 12

      Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maiden fillies open proceedings on the south coast with five of the twelve racing for the first time. (2) SPECIAL ROAD is the favourite, having run 2nd on debut on November 25th over 1000M, having previously run a similarly quick time in a trial. She draws well, carries a very light weight and the additional furlong can suit. The biggest threat looks to be one of the first-time starters. (1) ACE HORANGI won her trial in double quick time, leading all the way. She draws the same inside gate for her first race start and won’t need to improve much on the trial to go very close. (5) MY MANTRA ran on pleasingly enough for 5th place in a good time on debut at 1000M on November 11th and with some natural improvement can go closer today. Debut-makers (11) NEXT MARINE and (6) AMAZING MOVE are others capable of putting in bold showings first-up.
Selections (2) Special Road (1) Ace Horangi (5) My Mantra (11) Next Marine
      Next Best 6, 12
      Fast Start 1, 2, 5, 11

Seoul Race 4: Class Open (1600M) Allowance / KRW 150 Million

      (9) MACH STAR is favoured here. A maiden winner at start number two over 1200M at class 6 level on October 23rd, she than ran a good 2nd over that same distance on her first try at this level on November 19th. She has shown herself able to come from off the pace so the big step up in trip may be to her advantage and she is the one to beat. Plenty of others come in with recent form reading well. Chief among those is (8) LUCKY POWER, who was an also-ran in the Munhwa Ilbo Trophy in October but ran on well for 2nd over 1300M at this class on November 6th. He is another who can appreciate the additional trip and can be considered. (1) NUT PLAY started his career well but his latest two have seen him first get a long way back from a wide gate and then have a hard time in the Listed Nonghyup Chairman’s Trophy. From the inside draw and against more amenable company, he will have fewer excuses here. (4) HWARANG TODAY and (7) ROSE GOLD are among others to consider.
Selections (9) Mach Star (8) Lucky Power (1) Nut Play (4) Hwarang Today
      Next Best 7, 5
      Fast Start 2, 4, 8, 10

      Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

An extremely ordinary maiden which sees (8) SPECIAL JOHN, who has raced thirteen times and is yet to finish in the top-two, as the favourite. He has been getting better of late though, with two 3rd places and a 4th from his latest three and in the process set a time for this distance almost a full second faster than anything else here that has tackled the 1200M has managed. He won’t get a better chance than today to make the breakthrough. (2) MORNING MUSE comes back in trip and shapes as the logical danger having been on pace and then faded in her latest outings at further. She is up in the weights but that’s balanced by a good gate. The form, such that is, falls off after that with (7) WIDAEHAN SEONTAEK and (6) SPEED MAST the only others to have respectable showings among their most recent appearances which is enough to bring them into play here. (10) VELOCIRAPTOR did at least run on at start two over 1000M last time so may go better at this trip but is hardly convincing.
Selections (8) Special John (2) Morning Muse (7) Widaehan Seontaek (6) Speed Mast
      Next Best 10, 5
      Fast Start 2, 5, 6, 11

Seoul Race 5: Class Open (1700M) Allowance (Rating 1-35) / KRW 150 Million

Competitive race here. (12) WONDERFUL JOY overcame the widest gate to sit handy and then run on to win at class 5 level (which is essentially what this is), with three of today’s rivals behind him over this distance on November 12th. The set weight scale means he only comes up 1kg and that, combined with the widest gate again, might not be enough to prevent him winning again. (2) SPO BLADE is turning into a useful type. He got his maiden win at class 6 level two starts back over 1200M before running 2nd at 1300M on his first try at class 5 on November 19th. He has proven tactically versatile at the shorter distances and can go well on his debut over two turns. (5) FEDERAL KING and (7) K N TIZWON came home 2nd and 4th respectively behind Wonderful Joy in that November 12th race and both can be looking to go close again. (4) GAMGOK SUNSHINE another who can enter the calculations.
      Selections (12) Wonderful Joy (2) Spo Blade (5) Federal King (7) K N Tizwon
      Next Best 4, 1
      Fast Start 2, 9, 10, 11

Busan Race 3: Class Open (1600M) Allowance (Rating 1-35) / KRW 150 Million

Despite the big prize, this is basically a class 5. It’s wide open so we may as well take a chance on (11) COME ON FIRST, who got his maiden win on his first try at this distance on November 20th. With the set weight scale, he only comes up 1lg in the weights and while he may need a touch of luck early from the wide draw, he can win again at what will probably be an each-way price. Those set weights also mean (9) DOCTOR PERSIA isn’t giving away as much as he otherwise might. He comes in off two good performances over 1400M and 1800M, both at this class and both times finishing in 2nd. He surely goes close. (1) BRAVO HAMYANG is still a maiden but has only missed out on the top-four on one occasion from six starts. He was 4th on his only previous try at the distance and draws well here. (8) WONDERFUL ANDOVER and (2) QUEEN STAR among plenty others with designs on at least a place.
Selections (11) Come On First (9) Doctor Persia (1) Bravo Hamyang (8) Wonderful Andover
      Next Best 2, 10
      Fast Start 1, 8, 11, 12

Seoul Race 6: Class Open (1800M) Allowance (Rating 1-50) / KRW 150 Million

Big field and wide open at what is class 4 level. (12) K FRENZY enters having been a beaten favourite in both his last two starts, both at 1700M. He draws wide here but should have enough early speed to still be able to take up a good position and the weight scale does him no harm at all. He has every chance. (3) VIKING HEART enters off a strong 3rd place over this distance on November 27th when overcoming gate twelve to sit handy and run on. He obviously draws much better today and can maintain his good run of form. (11) WORLD RACER returns to action for the first time since June. He didn’t offer too many clues and he is definitely not done any favours by the set weights, but he has won over 1700M and in this company can be effective. (8) TIZ BAROWS was 4th in the Derby and along with (7) ONE PUTT, who after drawing blanks in his first twenty-four outings, has proceeded to win three in a row, is among others in a race of few standouts but many chances.
Selections (12) K Frenzy (3) Viking Heart (11) World Racer (8) Tiz Barows
      Next Best 7, 6
      Fast Start 1, 4, 8, 12

Busan Race 4: Class Open (1800M) Allowance (Rating 1-50) / KRW 150 Million

This is class 4 level. After a creditable midfield finish in the Jeju Governor’s Cup at Seoul over 1400M, (10) HAENAM HAMMER returned to Busan and to winning ways on November 6th, with an on-pace win over a mile. She is right at the top of the rating scale here so carries her fair share of weight, but it shouldn’t be enough to stop her from winning again. (1) GEUMA INFINITE has won at this distance at class 5 level and comes in off a 3rd place at class 4. He too carries plenty of weight but that’s balanced by a nice draw, and he can go close. (6) KING GRACE comes back in trip after recent good results over 1800M including a 4th and a 3rd place from his latest two appearances, both at class 4 level. He likes to settle back and run on and will be finishing strongly here. (9) LANE KILLER returns to action for the first time since April and having trialled well might be worth a chance at an each-way price. (5) UNJU STAR another in the hunt.
Selections (10) Haenam Hammer (1) Geuma Infinite (6) King Grace (9) Lane Killer
      Next Best 5, 8
      Fast Start 1, 5, 10, 11

Seoul Race 7: Class Open (1700M) Allowance (Rating 1-50) / KRW 150 Million

This is class 4 level. (1) KINGS EYE enters looking for a hat-trick of victories, having won his latest two in front-running fashion at class 6 and class 5 at 1300M and 1200M. He has only finished outside the top-four on one occasion from six starts and that as on debut. He comes up in trip, but it can suit. (2) CHEON GUN comes in off a runner-up finish over 1800M at class 4 level on October 30th when settling midfield and running on. A couple of today’s rivals were back down the track behind him and while he is up in the weights, he can be competitive again. (11) JOEUN GWANGYE was a class 4 winner at 1800M two starts back before running 2nd over a mile, again at class 4, on November 26th. That day he settled right back and ran on suggesting that the wide gate won’t be an issue and he should be finishing strong once more. (9) YONGHOJIMA and (10) BODY STAR among others to take into account.
Selections (1) Kings Eye (2) Cheon Gun (11) Joeun Gwangye (9) Yonghojima
      Next Best 10, 8
      Fast Start 4, 7, 8, 9

This is class 4 level. (4) MONGTTANG was highly rated as a juvenile but lost his way at the start of this year and after finishing 12th in the Derby in May, didn’t return until last month. On re-appearance at class 4 level over a mile, he almost led the entire way around, ultimately running 2nd in a good time and while he is up in the weights, he draws better, should strip fitter for the run, and has a chance. (8) CAPTAIN GOLD has raced just five times, winning once, and finishing 2nd in the remaining four, most recently over 1400M on October 23rd. He likes to run on pace and while he comes up in weight, he can challenge for the early lead and be in this a long way. (12) KF ONE rarely runs a bad race. He comes up in trip today and draws a touch wide but could go close. (2) NICE CHOEGANG and (11) JANGSAN BLACK among others who can enter the calculations.
Selections (4) Mongttang (8) Captain Gold (12) KF One (2) Nice Choegang
      Next Best 11, 3
      Fast Start 5, 8, 10, 12

Seoul Race 8: Class Open (1800M) Allowance (Rating 1-65) / KRW 150 Million

Class 3 here. (12) DOUBLE EDGE was an also-ran on this year’s Triple Crown trail with his best result being 5th of sixteen in the concluding Minister’s Cup. He pulled off a remarkable win at his latest start on November 26th though, when almost falling turning into the home straight having been badly checked by another horse. He recovered to run on to win by a full four-lengths and despite the wide draw, he will be favoured to win again here. (6) LUCKY WORLD comes in having run an in no way disgraced 7th of fourteen in the G1 President’s Cup last month over 2000M. At his previous start on September 18th, he beat a couple of these on his way to a close 2nd at this distance at class 3 level and he has a chance here. (11) COMPLETE TIME won three in a row between June and September to get promoted to class 3 whereupon he ran a good 2nd at this distance on November 6th. He very much likes to be on pace so the draw is not ideal but with a bit of early luck he can find a good position and can then threaten. (2) WONPYEONG COD and winner of his last three (5) FLYING GOLD are others in the hunt.
Selections (12) Double Edge (6) Lucky World (11) Complete Time (2) Wonpyeong Cod
      Next Best 5, 8
      Fast Start 5, 6, 7, 11

Busan Race 6: Class Open (1800M) Allowance (Rating 1-65) / KRW 150 Million

This is class 3 level. It could be a battle of two horses from different trainers but both sporting the colours of owner Boo Soo-sun. (1) UNJU OCEAN has only finished outside the top -three on one occasion and comes in following a strong 2nd over a mile at class 3 level on November 25th. He likes to be on pace, so the draw is a good one and there is no reason why the step up to two turns can suit. (6) UNJU HERO ran 4th in the KRA Cup Mile before only beating one home in the Derby. His form since has been good including a class 3 runner-up finish at this distance on November 20th. He likes to settle midfield and run on and will be a big danger here. (7) STAR EYE beat Unju Ocean when winning over a mile at class 3 in that November 25th race. He comes up 3kg in the weights and also in trip but should be competitive again. (8) FLYING THE CHAMP returned from five months off to run 2nd to promising juvenile Betelgeuse over this distance on November 25th and is nicely weighted here. (9) CATCH THE SKY among others in the minor money hunt.
Selections (1) Unju Ocean (6) Unju Hero (7) Star Eye (8) Flying The Champ
      Next Best 9, 3
      Fast Start 1, 2, 4, 11

Seoul Race 9: Class Open (1800M) Allowance (Rating 1-65) / KRW 150 Million

Class 3 level. (2) SPRING KING came home 5th behind Double Edge at his latest start on November 26th over this distance having led in the closing stages. He’s right at the top of the rating scale here but gets a good gate and can get it right this time. (7) JANGSAN MONSTER is another who doesn’t win out of turn but has been going well of late at shorter distances and the way he has run on in recent starts suggests he may be ready for another crack at two-turn racing. (6) YAHO GOLDEN CAT beat a couple of these on his way to 3rd place at this distance on October 30th at class 3 level. At the start before he won over the distance and while he carries 5kg more than his winning weight, he can be competitive here. (12) JEONGMUN BOLT and (4) THE SPIKER are among plenty of others with placing claims.
Selections (2) Spring King (7) Jangsan Monster (6) Yaho Golden Cat (12) Jeongmun Bolt
      Next Best 4, 11
      Fast Start 6, 7, 13, 14

      Seoul Race 10: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

      (12) STILL PLAY comes up in class having secured his maiden win at start number two over this distance on November 19th when fairly away but quickly striking the front then running away from the field. The draw is not ideal, but he can overcome that and can win again. (3) GREENBACK has plenty of experience at this level and has been knocking on the door for a while. Tactically versatile, from a good draw he can sit handy here and can be running on strong late. (4) PINE FARM returned from eight months out to run a very good 2nd at class and distance on November 12th when close to the pace throughout. He should strip fitter for that run and can be a contender here. (10) E-DANAEUN and (9) CLOUTER others who can enter the calculations.
      Selections (12) Still Play (3) Greenback (4) Pine Farm (10) E-Danaeun
      Next Best 9, 11

      Seoul Race 11: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

      (3) JANGSAN LASER enters having run an excellent 4th in the G1 President’s Cup over 2000M last month when he led until the closing stages. He was a class 1 winner at 1200M as recently as August and from a great draw and under a light weight, he should haver far too much here. Logical second pick is (7) WONPYEONG GASOK. He is up in class here but has a good record at the distance and comes down a full 7kg on his latest start. He has ten top-two finishes from fourteen starts and can measure up in this company. (5) THE GUMPU has a poor day at the office last time out when weakening over this distance. His record before that was good though and he looked well in a trial last week and is worth another chance here. (2) WANG BEOTKKOT and (11) GO UP are among others in the placing frame.
Selections (3) Jangsan Laser (7) Wonpyeong Gasok (5) The Gumpu (2) Wang Beotkkot

1st race – (1) Scarpia was a game second in her debut for Ward and looks best here. (7) Wise and Elegant should be suited by this distance and a switch to Seaz. (8) Part the Stars debuts for Ward and commands attention. (2) Oolong Hai could be a factor in her debut. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8.
3rd race – (2) Le Boina was third in her last two tries and should emerge victorious at this reduced claiming level. (7) Feisty Sara was a closing second last time and should be the main threat. (4) Clay Soldier won her debut and merits respect here. (3) Living in Paradise also could be a factor off a debut win. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-7. Exactas: 2-7 over 3-4 and 3-4 over 2-7.
5th race – (6) King Ramos had a useful comeback race and should appreciate the added distance. (1) Septemberten seeks a third straight win and is the one to fear. (3) Gump is training sharply for his first start since March and should get some attention. (7) Slim Slow Slider was second to Septemberten and should be in the mix once again. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6. Exactas: 1-6 over 3-7 and 3-7 over 1-6. Doubles: 1-3-6-7 with 2-7-8-11.
6th race – (8) Imonra was a solid second in her October debut and should register a maiden win here. (7) Apropos was also second in her debut and should be a top contender. (11) Etna’s Napper could be a promising firster. (2) Ro Town has looked good in two recent gate drills for her debut. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-7-8-11. 8th race – (5) Souper Blessing had some trouble when fifth in a stakes and should make amends here. (3) Canal might appreciate a switch to Tapeta. (4) Blamethegoodtimes might perk up on Tapeta. (7) Cheerful Charlie has speed and could be tough to catch here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5. Exactas: 3-5 over 4-7 and 4-7 over 3-5

Jeff Siegel’s National Best Plays for Sunday, December 18, 2022

Gulfstream Park 1st race – Post time: 12:10 ET
                  8-Part the Stars-GB (4-1)

Makes her debut with just two workouts listed on her tab, but both were in company with the talented 2-year-old colt Salt Spray (a strong second in his debut here yesterday), so we suspect this English-bred filly will be highly competitive in this five furlong dash over the all-weather surface. The Wesley Ward-trained filly, purchased as a yearling overseas for $110,000, lands Johnny V. and is one of two major contenders from this stable, the other being Scarpia, a strong second in her only prior outing at Saratoga and the likely choice and one to beat from her favorable rail draw. Both should be included in rolling exotic play with ‘Stars, certain to be the longer price of the two, worth strong consideration in the win pool as well.

Aqueduct 6th Race – Post time: 2:14 ET
                  10-My Betsy (5/2)

Had a couple of solid third place sprint runs at Saratoga, in both outings settling early and then picking it up through the lane to give every indication that she’ll enjoy a distance of ground. Drawn comfortably outside in this one turn mile, the daughter of Gun Runner seems certain to produce another forward move in her first outing in more than three months, and with a healthy recent work pattern to have her fit and ready the Bill Mott-trained filly offers solid value at 5/2 on the morning line in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Early Pick 4 Analysis-$50K Guaranteed Pool

                    December 18, 2022 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has a big night of racing on tap featuring two carryovers. The 0.20 Early Pick 5 has a $13,670 carryover and a $50,000 gross guaranteed pool. The sequence starts in Race 1, has a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus. The other carryover on the 11-race card comes in the finale. The 0.20 High-5 in Race 11 has a $6,744 carryover that leads to a $25,000 guaranteed pool.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                    Race 1

4-Cartiere (6-1)-This 4-year-old has a knack for winning and comes off a solid effort to take a picture. Things clicked this year winning 8 times in 12 tries, making his lifetime record (12-8-1-1). Likes to race near the top of the stack, could get the 2-hole behind #6.
5-Two To Ten (3-1)-No one was beating Ivar last week but was clearly 2nd best and missed a start. Likes to cash checks hitting the board in 21 of 38 and now Plano takes a seat. Has acclimated to the big track and could be sitting on a big try.
6-Ivar (9/5)-Five-year-old made it look easy in last and many will probably single. Took to the off track and did get the jump on the field. Can't keep off the ticket but will look to beat this 5-year-old who has only 8 lifetime wins in what might be a chalky sequence.
7-Down It (9/2)-Elson Miller drove and trained this 3-year-old who looked a bit bumpy early in the mile. But kicked into gear going 3-wide down the lane and pulled away from the field. Steps up but went the back half in .57 and could be better in the 2nd start on this oval.
8-Snoah (15-1)-Faded last week on a good track and previous efforts here on a fast surface were better. Svendsen sticks with Plested (#1) but Irving has been hot, and he gets the assignment. Could pop at a price, can rally off cover if the fractions are lively.

                    Race 2

1-Not Me Gram (3-1)-Put in a decent qualifier on 12-9 and should be tough to beat if all systems are go. Plano steers this Hoosier invader who probably is the fastest on a mile surface.
3-Cut A Rug (8/5)-Burned money in the last 2 starts and those were on a wet track. But the race 3 back was a sharp win drawing off by 3 lengths at this class and will look for a return to that form.

                    Race 3

4-Prom Queen (3-1)-Finished 2nd to the one below but was no match on a sloppy track. Could present a stern challenge on a dry surface.
5-Nebble Hanover (4/5)-Has won 3 in a row, the last 2 by over 7 lengths. Took off like a speed boat in the slop and never looked back. May win again if the track comes up dry but the Queen could present a challenge.

                    Race 4

2-DT Pet Attack (3-1)-This Pet Rock 3-year-old is winless in 22 attempts. But this group is full of horses who don't win, and the Plano/Cisco combo does click at CalX.
6-Ideal Poppy (1/1)-This Schneider pupil drops and is a respectable 5 for 15, the rest of the field has only 2 wins in total. Finished a beaten 2nd in the last 2 starts to well-meant winners and neither are in this race.

                    Race 5

2-Marys Pretty Girl (7/2)-Cashed 2nd place checks losing to the one below in the last 2 starts. Both tries were against Open company and just missed by a head when the track was fast. Goulet was between the pipes that night and he's back steering here.
6-Rockin With Lou (6/5)-This mare is owned, driven, and trained by 77-year-old Gerry Longo and has won 14 of 21 at CalX. Has been an odds-on winner in the last 2 starts and should be a short price again.

                    0.20 Early Pick 5

                    4,5,6,7,8/1,3/4,5/2,6/2,6
                    Total Bet=$16

                      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                      Fair Grounds - Race #2
#4 Illusioned Would be happy to take this guy as something like the second choice as he goes off the claim for the new team after snagging a distant share last time out. Forward player might be able to stick around better at a more leisurely tempo at this trip.
#5 Izeondec He's probably a good fit with the locals at this level, but I think he has made a lot of sense in some of his tries when still settling for a share. The one to beat, but maybe he's too late here?
#3 Cat Five He has been a tactical type in his sprint tries, so he's another who might be able to find a good spot while getting around two turns. Wouldn't be a surprise.
Race Summary Illusioned has enough pace to get in the mix early after fading going short in a pair of starts at Horseshoe Indianapolis, and I think he has some upside while moving around two turns.
                      Fair Grounds - Race #3
#1 Fitts N Starts Debuter brings connections who typically race in the open ranks, and she has been working regularly ahead of this first try, and I'm not sure she's meeting a whole lot in here. Guessing she's tough right out of the box, but get a look at her on the tote and track.
#6 Mo Smoking She held her own with some open groups earlier in her career and looked like a good fit with similar last time out. Think she's overbet in here and could be vulnerable late, but she makes a lot of sense.
#4 Jazz Jazz Jazz She was much better when dropping to the basement last time out, and she steps up off the claim while getting around two turns for the first time. Wouldn't be shocked to see her hold enough of that form to share here.
Race Summary Fitts N Starts goes first time out with a potentially cozy rail draw waiting for her, as I think there is enough pace lined up in here to let her settle in the second flight early on and save some ground.
                      Fair Grounds - Race #7
#6 Ours and Theirs She was never involved when sent long off the bench last time out, but she now turns back with that race under her belt while finding a spot with what looks like a good race flow for her. Think she's overlooked in here with a real chance.
#3 Wupkar She hasn't really shown she can finish past horses, and she draws inside of the other pace today, so I think there are a couple reasons to make her prove it in here at what might be an underlaid price. That said, something like her last would land this.
#7 Royal O'Haigain Forward player is probably most likely of the speed types to relax and press just a little bit, and it's easy to see her getting a first-jump trip and holding the finishers.
Race Summary Three potential pace players should hopefully set honest enough splits to help Ours and Theirs. She has room to come forward while getting back to her best trip in this second start off the layoff, and I think she's going to offer a playable mid-range price.

                            NFL | Falcons vs Saints

Play on: Saints -4 -110 at Ace

Sunday's Free NFL Pick: New Orleans Saints -4
I'll take my chances with the Saints as a 4-point home favorite against the Falcons. I see a high probability that New Orleans wins this game by at least a touchdown, making this an easy play for me at -4.
Atlanta was a covering machine to start the year, cashing against the spread in each of their first 6 games. Since that 6-0 ATS start the Falcons have gone 1-6 ATS with the only cover being a 3-point win over the Bears at home in a game they were favored by just 2. Atlanta also hasn't won on the road since Week 3 and all 5 road losses have come by at least 4 points.
The Falcons will also be playing this game without starting quarterback Marcus Mariota, who is out with an injury. Rookie Desmond Ritter will make his first .While I don't know that there's a huge drop off from Mariota and what he brought the offense, I don't think he's going to come out and light up this Saints defense.
This also just feels like a good time to buy low on New Orleans, who is getting no love right now after losing their last two games and 4 of their last 5 overall. One thing to note with New Orleans is 4 of their last 5 losses have come on the road.
I know the offense has struggled to do much of anything here of late, but a lot of that has to do with them getting matched up against some of the better defenses. In their last 5 games they have faced the Bucs, 49ers, Rams, Steelers and Ravens.
I look for Andy Dalton and the Saints offense to have a much easier time moving the ball against what I think is a very mediocre Atlanta defense. The Falcons have allowed 25.7 pig, 394 ypg and 6.1 yards/play on the road this season. Give me New Orleans -4!

The Philadelphia Eagles have a two-game lead on the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. They have room to spare, and they play the Cowboys next week in a game that will decide the division. I can see them getting caught looking ahead to that game. Either way, I think the Bears are good enough to stay within one score of the Eagles at home this week. The Bears are coming off a bye and have been ultra competitive with Justin Fields as their starter. In their last 10 games with Fields as a starter, they have lost by more than 9 points just once. Their offense has produced 24 or more points in five of his last six starts with the only exception being the 19 points against the Packers in which they deserved better with 409 total yards of offense but three turnovers. Philadelphia is 6-0 SU on the road but just 2-4 ATS away from home. They are struggling to get margin on teams on the road with the exception of the Giants, who were decimated by injuries last week. The Eagles are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games dating back to last season. Give me the Bears.
