Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks
Fair Grounds - Race #7
Picks Notes
#11 Hunter's Drive He gets the edge at what should be a decent price if he's able to draw in here, as he's only run short on the turf and might like this type of longer trip. He's the one I want if he gets in.
#3 Willakenzie He goes first out for a team that is tough with this type, and he's not meeting a whole lot of imposing form on paper from those with experience. Wouldn't be a surprise.
#12 Fujin Think he's got a chance on either surface if he's able to draw in here, and a more leisurely route tempo might really work in his favor.
Race Summary Will have to see how this all shakes out after scratches with only eight of them permitted to go on the grass, and I'd prefer Hunter's Drive if he gets in. Willakenzie won't have to be the best maiden we've seen from the Cox barn in order to land this at first asking from the main body of the field.
Fair Grounds - Race #8
Picks Notes
#7 Commander Scott He has historically had a bit of trouble here, running up a winless slate from 10 local tries, but I think he has a lot of room to bounce back off that last one. He was held up and tapping on the brakes throughout before going empty quickly. Better draw today off the fence should help him find a perfect tactical trip. Solid mid-range price lean to close the card.
#8 Sunday Breeze He proved he was a good fit with the locals with a better effort last out against statebred company, and his baseline effort keeps him in the mix here.
#4 Bouldering He'll return as a first-time gelding off the bench, and he was last seen getting put up for his maiden win here last season. He should get the right trip here, but I worry that he might be vulnerable in the final yards off the layoff.
Race Summary Commander Scott gets a call back from me here after finishing last with similar in his most recent start, as he can get a cleaner go today while not stuck inside, and a more free-flowing trip might give him a chance to land this at a price.
Fair Grounds - Race #3
Picks Notes
#4 Yockey Butterfly Think this debuter will get overlooked, but the barn has connected with a couple price winners in similar spots over the last couple seasons here from limited starters. Take a look on the tote and track, but maybe she's got a sneaky chance here.
#2 Entitlement She took a nice step forward in that second career start when trying the local footing for the first time, and she looks like a logical threat to get past these late.
#5 Pursuit l'Harmonie She came forward nicely with an improved effort when trying maidens for the first time after debuting in stakes company here opening weekend, and I think she has a claim on this one from close range even if I have some questions about the race she exits.
Race Summary Yockey Butterfly goes first time out in a spot where I've got some concerns about the logical players, and she's a fresh face for a barn that has done some sneaky work with similar types over the last few years.
