2^nd race [NY, Md 25000, 1 mi] – (6) Jessica’s Race (D) took late money making her odds drop from 6-1 to 4-1 but had to steady on the backstretch and finished fourth. She now changes barns and gets blinkers on. (4) Amanda’s Folly was second for a $40,000 tag last time and now drops to the lowest level for NY-breds. (8) Maize Loved Laffy will make her first start against NY-breds after making four starts at minor racetracks and changes to a New York barn. (1) Betting On a Stone will debut for hot trainer Linda Rice and faces a field that can be beaten with a decent effort.
3^rd race [OC 50k/SAL 50k, 6F] – (2) Honest Banker was a debut winner on a sloppy Aqueduct track just three weeks ago for Rob Atras who once again is winning plenty of races in the winter. (5) Luna Loca broke her maiden with a front-end effort by more than two lengths and now changes barns following the retirement of Rich Schosberg. (4) Curlins Choir won a maiden claimer by more than eight lengths at Gulfstream Park in her debut and also changes to a New York barn. (6) Our Rosie Diamonds also broke her maiden for a $40,000 tag last time after three third-place finishes.
5^th race [Clm 25000 N3L, 1 mi] – (2) She Caught My Eye (C) was an easy winner after getting bet down to be the 6-5 favorite from 3-1 while pressing the pace. (4) Vallarand is in excellent form since moving to the Atras barn with a pair of second-place finishes and gets blinkers on. (5) Gagliano drops down from a third in a starter allowance after breaking slowly. (1) Infringement exits a win in the N2L condition and then a third at today’s level.
9^th race [OC 62k/N2X, 1 mi] – (1) No Burn (D) was bet down from 6-1 to 3-1, got off to a slow start, had to race wide, set the pace while rank under restraint, and faded to fourth. (9) Curlin’s Wisdom has four wins and two seconds in his last six starts with five of those races at Aqueduct. In his career record at the Big A is 8: 3-3-1. (2) Outlier was in tough company in his last two starts including the Cigar Mile (G1). (3) Uncle Moonlight returns from a June layoff having previously won following a freshening. Last seen he won a first-level allowance at Belmont Park.

1st race – (8) Takemetothemoon debuts for Casse and should be well-suited by turf. (7) Coppermaster drops into a claimer and should be a key contender. (5) Tio Tony was second in his debut and should make a smooth switch to turf. (12) Networking may be competitive here in a claimer. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-7-8-12.
3rd race – (2) Plaisante showed a nice turn of speed in her debut and may hang on in this try. (1) Mrs Whistler debuts for Sweezey and will be dangerous from the rail. 7th race – (7) Yooou Know (B) was a distant second in her debut and seems poised for a win here. (1) Sistren should respond to the cutback in distance. (8) Sugar Sin could be a factor in her debut. (6) Sturdy Girl adds blinkers and could be a contender here. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-6-7-8. Doubles: 1-6-7-8 with 2-4-6-8.
8th race – (4) Frosted Oats hasn’t raced since a maiden win in June and has been training nicely for her comeback. (2) State Crown was claimed last time and should be closing fast at the end. Forecast: Double Fantasy takes a realistic class drop from a much tougher starter allowance $32,000 affair to this restricted (nw-3) $20,000 sprint for fillies and mares and seems to have found a proper spot to regain her winning form. She was a voided claim for $16,000 when winning two races box at Del Mar but we suspect she’s reasonably sound at this time and ready to reproduce her best effort. Comfortably drawn outside and with multiple speed figures that are better than par for this level, the lightly raced mare should be able to settle in the second flight outside and then wear down the leaders late. For protection, you can include Unwritten Code on your ticket as a backup or a saver. She won a softer (nw-2) $12,500 last time out with a career top speed figure, but her performance may have been promoted considerably by a wet fast track. She’ll be part of the early pace and will be dangerous if she can turn in two alike.

RACE 2: Post: 12:30 PT Grade: B-

Forecast: Wudi may have been a tad short when worn down late by the talented Lily Poo in her debut last month at Del Mar (she finished more than four lengths clear of the rest) but she has returned to breeze very well for trainer Bob Baffert (32% with second-time starters) and seems certain to produce a significant forward move in this maiden sprint for sophomore fillies. The daughter of Uncle Mo switches to Johnny B., adds Lasix (they all do now that they’ve turned three) and rates a slight edge on top in a race in which the contention stretches from top to bottom. Baffert’s other starter, Doinitthehardway, has the route-to-sprint angle that we like and also is returning to the maiden ranks after finishing a respectable fourth in the Starlet S.-G1 at Los Alamitos last month. She should be running on late. Teena Ella displayed excellent speed to the top of the lane in her debut at Del Mar in November before hitting the way and faltering, but she continues to impress in the morning and may employ stalking/pressing tactics from her cozy outside draw. It would be surprising if Beholder’s daughter doesn’t step forward in a big way.

Forecast: High Heater drops considerably in class but remains above his claim level and switches to Flavian Prat, so this certainly looks like the money for the Bob Hess, Jr.-trained gelding in this $16,000 main track miler for older horses. A repeat of his sharp runner-up effort two races back over this track and distance in early November should be more than good enough to beat this field. The one to fear most is the late running Big Buzz, a two-time winner (from just four starts) over the Santa Anita main track and with several back speed figures that make him a strong fit at this level. Most effective when held up early and allowed to run late, the son of Mr. Big switches to Hector Berrios and seems certain to receive the patient ride he requires.

Forecast: Yo Time was knocked down to favoritism in a similar maiden state-bred dirt sprint at Del Mar in his debut in late November but got behind horses inside during the early stages and appeared to resent the kick back. He adds Lasix, draws a better post, and may run to expectations this time around. The son of Smiling Tiger probably has more gate quickness than he displayed, and it wouldn’t surprise us to see him on or near the lead throughout. Thirsty is a first time starter that went through the ring as a yearling for $97,000. The son of Stay Thirsty has put together a solid work tab at San Luis Rey Downs for trainer Peter Miller and could come up a live item, so we’ll also include him on our main ticket.

Forecast: Ardis should be too quick for these if she can duplicate either one of her last two races. The daughter of Mohaymen displayed much improved early speed when rolling to the wire as much best in an abbreviate sprint two runs back at Del Mar and then finished second in a hot race at Los Alamitos in her most recent outing. The concern is her consistency and dependability; she has a share of clunkers on her resume, so it would be prudent to have some protection in rolling exotic play. Rain Diva has plenty of early speed and a stalk-and-pounce strategy will be available if her connections choose to employ it. However, she is drawn inside her pace rival, and it is possible that they hook up early and do each other in. The best of the closers may be Righteously, a “must use” with the switch to Flavian Pratt. The problem is that she is winless in seven starts over the Santa Anita main track (but with six wins elsewhere), and while she sports a solid, healthy work tab for her first start since October she just might not care for the local surroundings. We’ll toss her in, nonetheless.

Forecast: Haskelled seems sure to employ gate-to-wire tactics from his favorable inside post in this bottom-rung maiden $20,000 claiming miler in his first try around two turns and his first for a tag. The switch to Flavian Pride guarantees he’ll be heavily backed, even though this $140,000 yearling purchase clearly indicates is being culled from the stable. He is listed at 6/5 on the morning line for a reason: a lack of a viable alternative in the field. Tread lightly here.

RACE 7: Post: 3:05 PT Grade: C+

Forecast: Little Rachel moves up two notches on the claiming ladder after being haltered by a low profile but very capable outfit, and this three time Santa Anita main track winner may hold a slight edge in this $32,000 claiming sprint for older fillies and mares that demands considerable coverage in rolling exotic play. Drawn nicely outside and reunited with Juan Hernandez, who has ridden her to victory on several occasions, the veteran daughter of Tapiture projects to settle in mid-pack and then have clear sailing when asked to accelerate from the quarter pole home. She was a voided claim two races back, but we’ll proceed under the assumption that she’s in good enough shape now. La V. is another that clearly prefers the local main track (never off the board in four starts), and after being worn down late in a slightly softer affair last fall, she returns off the bench with a solid work tab that should have her ready for a major effort. She returned off a seven money layoff to win last spring, so we know she can fire fresh. Miss Fia has several back numbers that make her a fit in this league and has proven to be quite capable on any surface (dirt, turf, wet). She’s another returning off a vacation with past success off the bench and likes this dirt strip, having finished in the money in each of her seven career starts at Santa Anita.

Forecast: The conditions of this maiden sophomore sprint restrict entry to those that went through the ring at auction for $150,000 or less, or are entered to be claimed for $62,500, meaning the first time starter Motorcade is perfectly spotted, having sold for that top price at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton July sale. The son of Accelerate certainly has looked the part in his morning drills for John Sadler, appearing plenty fit and with enough raw talent and speed to be very competitive in a field such as this. The barn traditionally has solid stats with debut runners, though not lately, but perhaps this colt is good enough to buck the trend. Juan Hernandez rides a lot of live newcomers for this stable, so at 6-1 on the morning line there is plenty of wagering value available in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics. The $500,000 yearling purchase Nullabor is entered for a tag despite having just two starts, so clearly the barn isn’t very high on him. While the Bob Baffert-trained colt clearly has been a disappointing, the son of Curlin should make his presence felt against this group, especially with the route-to-sprint, class drop angle and the addition of Lasix.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis-$25,000 Guaranteed Pool

Cal Expo has a 12-race program scheduled and it looks like the weather will finally cooperate, at least for tonight. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7

1-Major Winker (5-1)-Makes the 3rd local start after traveling inside versus better. Drops to a more comfortable level and should get an efficient trip.
3-Marced Magic (5-1)-This veteran from the Schneider barn has cashed many checks at CalX (58-13-8-8) and should be in the hunt tonight. James Kennedy takes the lines, that's a positive driver change and could make a difference.
6-Chasing Bismarck (12-1)-Steps-up after putting in a good try on a sloppy track to finish a close 2nd. This is another who should benefit in a change in pilots with Svendsen taking a seat. Has finished 2nd in the last 2, both on an off-track and is only 1-20 on a wet surface.

Race 8

3-Quarantini (3-1)-Just missed by a half-length in making it 3 straight. Fits well again and likes to win capturing 5 of 18 starts. Should be a bigger threat on a fast track. Lackey may get on the engine and not look back.
7-Worthy Opponent (6-1)-The Schneider barn changes to another veteran teamster in John Macdonald who should have this 5-year-old racing near the top of the stack. Faded in last but should get a smooth trip and likes CalX winning 13 of 25 races.
8-Unfiltered (6/5)-This 5-year-old has only made 31 lifetime starts and has won 16 times with 12 victories coming in 2022. He is a perfect 4 for 4 at CalX, was bet down to 1/5 on 12-16 and will probably be an odds-on choice again. Will respect chances but hasn't drawn outside here and will hope for either of the 2 above to find a way to take top honors.

Race 9

2-Heads Up Boys (6-1)-This mare raced big from post 10 to finish a close 3rd at this class. That last effort was the 1st race here on a fast track, Svendsen sticks and will look for a top performance.
5-Brooklyn Moonshine (8/5)-Dropped to this class in last and faded down the lane to come a disappointing 4th after going off at 9/5. Will use despite the dull finish as the track favored closers in that race.

Race 10

1-Go Away N Play (3-1)- Elson Miller steers, trains and owns this 7-year-old mare. This is a suspect group, the entire field had 6 wins total in 2022 and this gal took 3 pictures. Shows the ability to pass foes down the lane and that might be enough to take a picture here.
3-Always Glad (5/2)-This will be the 3rd race at CalX this season and 3rd start since 4-22. Took the long way around in last and Lackey should work a better trip this time. Could be tight enough to show better speed and a fast track wouldn't hurt chances.

Laurel Park Pick 5 Analysis Friday, Jan. 6

A 42-to-1 leadoff winner on New Year’s Day stumped Pick 5 players at Laurel Park, the main reason the 50-cent wager will feature a $9,877 carry-over pool on this Friday’s card. Here’s a look at the action:

LRL 5th race (2:22 EST) -- Trainer Kieron Magee should have a big say in this race with class-dropping claim DULCE KIARA coming out of a ‘key’ race on the inside and morning-line favorite MY BOSS LADY on the outside. FORTES rushed up after a bumpy start and finished third behind a pair of sub 2-to-1 rivals two starts back, then was outrun when finishing behind the aforementioned Dulce Kiara and winner Stay Out (6-33, $148k) in her most recent start. She wears blinkers for the first time and is a good value play.

LRL 6th race (2:51 EST) -- Navigating this 12-horse allowance could be the key to solving the Pick 5 puzzle. ELUSIVE AGENT, a late-running sprinter, stretches out in distance in a speed-laden field. He got up for second behind John The Bear (3-6, $90k in 2022) and his sire, Blofeld, was a multiple Grade II winner at one mile. JARDANI won 3 of 7 on the main track last year despite a bad, slow-starting habit. He, too, gets the right set-up at the right price. GALLANT GOLD finished a distant second to recently stakes-placed One Ten (4-20, $168k) in his last two starts at the distance. NOSTALGIC RUN, the morning-line favorite, held clear stretch leads in four consecutive longer route races, only to drift in the stretch each time and hold on for only one victory. ICY MINISTER makes the ticket at 30-1 on the switch to a barn that has 19-percent winners and a positive return on investment over the last three years.

LRL 7th race (3:21 EST) -- PARADISE PRIDE changed tactics, engaged in a suicide duel to the far turn and tired badly after his stablemate passed by for the win. He can top $100,000 in Laurel Park earnings with a victory and has a capable running-mate in MYSTIC LINK (11-49, $212k). NO MORE TALK, still going strong at age 9, should sit an ideal trip at a proven distance off an easy victory and a re-claim by trainer Ferris Allen III.

LRL 8th race (3:51 EST) -- SUPREME LAW bulled his way between rivals at the top of the stretch and drew off to an impressive debut victory, then he set a fast and pressured pace in allowance company and battled back gamely when passed by the winner. Like him as today’s solo play on the cutback to 5-1/2F.

LRL 9th race (4:21 EST) – DROPKICK QUEEN raced evenly behind the runaway odds-on favorite and recently stakes-placed Awesome Pic two starts ago at 7F, then left too much work to do while finishing with interest at 6F. She gets Lasix today and projects a good stalking trip from the outside with a better break. GOLDEN NERVE broke her maiden when last seen five months ago against Quantico Creek, who came back to finish second in a stakes race. Her limited workouts are solid and so is the barn.

Turfway Park - Race #5

#5 Valuable Cargo	I'll keep coming back to this barn with maiden runners here, as they've always been sneaky good with these types locally, and they've recently run second with similar horses at 24/1 and 21/1. The team keeps sending them out live, and they keep getting ignored on the board -- chance this one follows that pattern.
#1 Rocky Joy	There are a couple speedy works along the way for this debuter, and I wonder if he might be able to land a piece of this at a price while working out a cozy trip from the inside.
#9 Mont Mercou	No arguing with the way this barn is going this meet, and they've been lights out with maidens here the last few years. Take a look on the track and tote, but I imagine he's ready to go.
Race Summary	Valuable Cargo goes first out for a Hamilton barn that has a history of sending out live price players in this kind of race, and they've done just that in a couple recent starts -- maybe this guy is the one that gets them another well-deserved score with this kind?

Turfway Park - Race #6

#6 Sage Hill	She'll make her local debut while dipping in for a claiming tag for the first time, and this barn is a 36% operation with this kind over the local surface the last few years. Her form seems reliable enough to make a dent here.
#9 Literary	She woke up in a big way when trying the new footing for the first time last out, and something similar would probably put her in the mix late.
#2 Queen in the North	She might like it here after turning in a string of decent turf sprint efforts, and she's probably a good fit at the local level -- the easiest she has ever tried.
Race Summary	Sage Hill has been an even-running type through five starts, but he makes a lot of sense with this level of local company for a team that excels with these types.

Turfway Park - Race #7

#10 Blue Devil	He has a tactical edge on a lot of the logical finishers in here, and I think cutting back a quarter mile for this one should work in his favor. First jump gets him home?
#5 Policy Option	Wouldn't argue with anyone landing here off an impressive first try over the track, and he figures to be winding up with a rally late -- too late?
#12 River Redemption	Think he has a little price appeal while dropping to an easier spot than his local debut last time out, and he's got a lot of bounce back potential with some relatively recent races that look competitive here.
Race Summary	#13 Hard Love has a claim on this one as well, but Blue Devil might benefit from the cutback in here, as it might really highlight his ability to get a pace jump on some of the obvious threats like Policy Option, who lacks pace but can be a menace late.

She put away the speedy pace setter in early stretch and found more when others closed in. She gets Lasix today and an ample pace flow to track from a favorable post. Bet to win and place.

Golden Gate - Race #7

#9 HALF HOPING (6-1)	Drops, runs well fresh, duplicate of prior one-mile race fits well in here.
#1 GRIGORO (5-2)	Played the bridesmaid role in last three starts at this level and distance.
#4 RUNNING LUCK (8-1)	Won 3 of her last 7 route races at average odds of 6-1.
Race Summary	HALF HOPING gained late on the two favorites at 5-1/2F last out and has a decent one-mile race to run back to in October at Fresno. She was unhurried to the far turn, gained steadily to mid-stretch and tired late in a race won by odds-on Good Time Dolly (33/6-4-6, $85k), who won a $4,000 starter allowance here recently for her third win in row.
