Al Cimaglia: Woodbine Mohawk Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Woodbine Mohawk Park begins the week with an 11-race card. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 8, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 8

5-Speaking Of Art (3-1)-This is 2nd time for Moreau off a claim and likes to cash checks. Was camera shy last year and has only 1 win in 26 starts here. JMac sticks, draws well and could catch a favorable trip for an overdue picture.
6-Officer Jones (4-1)-Has been trying hard and has shown good form in the last 2 starts. Should be in the mix at the wire and might be overlooked.
8-Quan Blue Chip (5/2)-Legal Bettor won't be his nemesis tonight and makes the 1st start off a claim for Merner. That conditioner posted a win versus this kind on 12-5 and McNair taking the lines shouldn't hurt. Small barn has only 6 starts over the last 30 days but has notched 3 wins.

Race 9

2-HP Mama B (2-1)-Raced well last week in the 1st start in almost a month. It could be go-time, comes back in sequence and regular pilot Roy returns to steer.
4-Looks Like Moni (5/2)-Purchased 4 starts ago and has been on a form spree since. Muscle Hill 4-year-old must love his new surroundings and has shown too much determination to leave off the ticket.
5-Run Director (7/2)-This will be the 3rd start since 8-10-21 and the 3rd race on Lasix. Looked better last week going the 2nd half in 56.3 and could be finishing the best of all.

Race 10

1-Mach Art In Motion (5/2)-Won easily in his debut for the Moreau barn and JMac gets the assignment this evening. Should be forwardly placed and looks like a main player.
5-My Land (7/2)-Comes off an easy win at FlmD in the 1st start for the Lester stable and that outfit has posted 43% winners over the last 30 days. Does have 3 wins in 21 Wbsb races and almost wired the field against cheaper from post 9. Roy should work a favorable trip with this post draw.

Race 11

3-Hp Momentum (3-1)-Takes a considerable drop and picks up Roy to do the steering and that is a ++ driver change. This looks like a spot to shine.
9-Outlaw Aceofspades (4-1)-Drops to a level for success and beat this kind back in October. Cullen should have him in contention turning for the wire and could be a square price with this post draw.

Mahoning Valley - Race #3

#2 Sister Code	She's not very reliable, but the price figures to be right to see if she can stick around in a race where there is not a ton of early speed signed on. Forward chance to surprise?
#1 Taboo Hoo	She's got a right to be tough with some room to come forward off the useful debut run, and even something similar to that run would probably keep her right in the mix.
#7 Liam's Quality	She's one of a few debuters, so take a look at her on the track and tote before this one, but she gets a good draw for the first test today.
Race Summary	Sister Code is quicker early than most of these, and she stuck around a bit better near the pace last time out. Maybe she flashes some pace again today and gets brave.

Mahoning Valley - Race #6

#5 Ol' L B	Wonder if he can bounce back here after a couple flat efforts to end the year, as he has some sharp pace and a handful of back efforts that look competitive here. Overlooked a bit?
#2B Uncle Charming	He's a good fit at this level and should be in a good spot tracking the top choice early on. Easy to see him getting a first-over trip today.
#1A Riverboat Gambler	He's a pretty reliable finishing type who figures to settle a bit further off the pace, but I have a mild concern that he's not going to get the kind of pace he needs to get over the top.
Race Summary	Ol' L B has not shown his typical pace in his last two starts, but perhaps a quick getaway will allow him to control the tempo in a spot where he's not meeting a ton of other confirmed early burn.

Mahoning Valley - Race #7

#1 Purdy Pumkin	She'll cut back for this one with some decent one-turn races on her page, and there are a lot of pace and chasing types signed on, giving this one a price chance to settle and save some ground before trying to pick them up late.
#4 Bourbonwithginger	She's probably going to be a player in here while getting back in with the locals off that Kentucky form with better. Hits hard with her best.
#8 Awesomely Shy	Her last pair have not been much to write home about, but she draws well to flash some pace and prompt the other forward players who are drawn further inside.
Race Summary	Purdy Pumkin should be outrun in the early going here, but I think there's a good chance the pace comes back in this one, and she might be in line to capitalize when the tiring speed wilts.

#6 AFLEET DIVA (6-5)	Stalked 18-1 winner 4-wide, backed up in lane, gets class relief.
#3 BIG ANDY (6-1)	Took money in both starts since Parx arrival but was well-beaten.
Race Summary	SPIRIT OR SPITE chased the 3-to-5 winner until she tired in the stretch, drops a notch in a field that lacks speed and gets the call on the cutback to 5-1/2F. She changes riders again and is taken to spring a mild upset from just off the pace. Bet to win and place.

Parx - Race #3

#3 EMPEROR’S CAUSE (5-1)	Wake-up candidate in weak field, top money-earner despite record.
#7 MOON DOG (2-1)	Starts fresh off claim, ran third behind pair of $70k earners who repeated.
#8 SENSIBLE JIM (3-1)	Couldn’t reach 7-5 winner in repeat attempt, can make good use of his speed.
Race Summary	EMPEROR’S CAUSE enters a high-percentage barn with claimers, takes a magnified class drop in a field that is a combined 8-for-138 and can end a long winless drought as the co-lightweight. Play a 3/7,8/ALL trifecta.

Parx - Race #7

#6 RELATIVLEA (5-1)	Likes to win, runs for cheapest tag, has rebounded before from sub-par efforts.
#4 CROATIAN (5-1)	Good fit at this level, earned top speed fig in defeat last out, will be running late.
#1 HIGH VELOCITY (6-1)	Should have just that from the rail, but won’t get away as easy as recent win.
Race Summary	RELATIVLEA won 4 of 11 route races during a limited schedule in the past year, two at today’s distance. He fired a blank from post 10 on a sloppy track last out, but he projects and ideal stalking trip and offers good enough value for a win and place bet.

Has to be considered versus this field displaying quite good figures recently and an average Equibase Speed Figure of 74 under similar conditions. SHELLEY'S GEM - Must be used in the exotic wagers. She has been running very well and the speed figures are among the best in this group. BACKSPLASH - Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group of horses in her last contest. Has run quite well when racing a dirt sprint race.

MAHI MAHI - Zunino was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Fits well considering the fact that the last time he tried this distance he got a speed figure good enough to win today. HI HO CHEERIO - Hernandez and Lund have had wonderful success together over the last year. Just missed hitting the board on December 13th at Turf Paradise. With decent morning line odds in this race, he has my interest.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 EL CHAVO DEL OCHO (ML=3/1), #7 MORE HONOR (ML=4/1), #1 JUSPASSINTHRU (ML=5/1),

EL CHAVO DEL OCHO - The Brain cautions me to stay away from ponies in short distance contests that haven't hit the board in short distance events of late. MORE HONOR - Difficult to put your cash on the win end of any horse that finishes second and third as regularly as this entrant does. JUSPASSINTHRU - Just cannot play this less than sharp equine. Didn't show me anything positive last time around the track or on Nov 14th. The speed figures are going downward. I'm not throwing a few bucks at this questionable contender off of that trend.

MILWAUKEE BAY - Nice return on investment for this jock and trainer twosome. The November 12th contest at Woodbine was at a class level of (72). Dropping to a lower class rank considerably, so she should be in a good spot. My expertise says this is the lone stalker in the race. MY CORALENA - Took a class drop last time out at Parx Racing. Hawthorne keeps her at the same level in this field. I think that's a good move. This mare's last speed fig is good enough to win here, I'll bet on her back again this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MAARTY'S DILEMMA (ML=3/1), #2 JACKIE B GOOD (ML=4/1),

MAARTY'S DILEMMA - Hasn't been on the Parx Racing oval in the last three weeks. Cause for some concern. This filly is always close, but just doesn't win. Hard to wager on her on the win end. JACKIE B GOOD - Equibase speed figures tell a tale of decreasing form. Don't think this entrant will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed fig was somewhat easily forgotten when compared with today's class rating.

I've got to go with MISS HARD KNOCKS. Bettors should probably take a good look at this one as this filly has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group. The Equibase Speed Figure of 93 from her most recent affair looks solid in here. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class figures of this group of animals. TIZ A MACHO GIRL - Her 74 average has this filly with among the best Equibase Speed Figures here. Metz has a sharp winning percentage with horses moving in dirt route races. JOY IN THE BATTLE - Ran a sharp last race. Evans has a reliable 28 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface.
