Aqueduct Horses in Focus for Thursday, January 19

RACE 5: DOUBLE SHOT (#6)

It’s hard to trust anyone in this New York-bred $25k claimer, as most of the contenders have seen better days. That’s particularly true of Microsecond (#4), who returns from a lengthy layoff for Rudy Rodriguez while switching back to dirt. He actually did run decently on dirt early in his career, and actually debuted sprinting for Rudy, but he’s particularly hard to trust in this spot. I would also be quite skeptical of Quickflash (#2) as he’s been claimed away from Natalia Lynch, for whom he had most of his success, and makes his first start off the claim for the low-percentage Cleveland Johnson. Yet at least Johnson is running him back on very short rest, in hopes of achieving a similar performance to the one he put forth for Lynch just 7 days ago. I’m not completely against him, but I have trouble taking a short price on him. There appears to be plenty of speed in this race, as at least half the runners in this field do their best work when they’re forwardly placed. That should work to the benefit for Rudy Rodriguez’s other entrant Masked Marauder (#8), who is cutting back to the right distance after trying two turns at Parx last time. I don’t love his overall form, as he did beat a weaker field two back, but he could get the right trip. My top pick is Double Shot (#6), who is another that would appreciate some pace up front. I’m encouraged that Chris Englehart is moving him up in class off the claim even though he might appear to be going off form. His recent efforts aren’t quite as bad as they look, since he got left at the start two back and then was too aggressively ridden when making an early move along the rail last time. He’s better when he can drop back and make one run, and that’s how Eric Cancel figures to pilot him here. These two have had a good rapport in the past. Double Shot has won at this level before and he typically handles wet tracks.

RACE 6: CAERUS (#3)

I’m reticent to take a short price on likely favorite Ragtime Blues (#5), who is dropping in class as he makes his first start off the claim for Linda Rice. This barn has been pretty potent off the claim recently, but I take it as a negative sign that Rice is dropping this horse in for $20k after picking him up for $32k last time. He just narrowly lost that last race, though I didn’t think he had much of an excuse, as he got away with moderate fractions before getting run down late. This is a softer spot, but I’m a bit skeptical that he recapture the form that we saw from him in the second half of last year. I have similar questions about Mi Tres Por Ciento (#2), who earned some flashy speed figures off the claim by Jeffrey Englehart last summer. Yet he didn’t run well last time at Parx and is now dropping in for a tag as he returns from a layoff. This barn has poor statistics off layoffs of any kind and I’m a little concerned that he may revert to being the cheaper animal we saw early last year. I’m more interested in a couple of rivals at bigger prices. F F Rocket (#6) seems pretty logical as he drops back into a claiming race. He ran well at this level last fall before his connections got a little ambitious in starter allowance company. His last effort isn’t as bad as it seems, and he figures to be a square price. My top pick is Caerus (#3). This horse is getting a notable trainer switch away from Bonnie Lucas, whose runners have struggled to be effective on this circuit over the past several months. On the other hand, new trainer Randi Persaud has been enjoying one of the most successful periods of his career, so this feels like a significant upgrade. Caerus didn’t run that badly at a similar level a few weeks ago and he has plenty of back races that would give him a shot here if Persaud can rekindle some of that form.

RACE 7: GAGETOWN (#1A)

Chad Brown holds a pretty strong hand in this N2X allowance optional claimer. Dr Ardito (#2) is the slightly more accomplished of his two runners, having won 4 starts in a row after finishing second in his career debut. Yet he’s also had some pretty significant layoffs during that streak and comes into this race off an 8-month break. That alone isn’t reason to be too skeptical, as Brown has fantastic statistics off layoffs of this type. The turnback in distance is a minor concern, but he is bred to go shorter and seems like one that should be well suited to this 7-furlong distance. I slightly prefer him to stablemate Nabokov (#6), who has the recency edge. He comes off a career-best 112 TimeformUS Speed Figure performance, and he’s won going this 7-furlong distance before. Yet I thought he was supposed to win last time when he had dead aim on the leader and just seemed to hang in the late stages. Among the short prices, I’d much rather take the Brown pair than the Pletcher-trained Saint Tapit (#8). Perhaps shortening back up to sprints will wake him up, but I’m concerned that he’s completely failed to show up in two of his last three starts. He does run like a horse that may prefer less ground, but he’s also never really progressed since his brilliant debut effort and will take money based on his pedigree and reputation. I want to go in a different direction in my search for value. While I normally try to avoid endorsing entries, I like Gagetown (#1A) as the stronger half of the Lynn Cash pair, and I don’t think his entrymate is going to drive down the price too much. This horse has plenty of back class, having won a stakes as a 3-year-old before placing behind talented runners Stilleto Boy and Flash of Mischief. He didn’t hit the board in his first start off the claim for Lynn Cash, but I thought he ran pretty well within the context of the race, rated behind a slow pace in tight quarters early. This is the kind of runner that can do well in the Cash stable over time, if not first off the claim. I like that he’s named a local rider in Jose Gomez and think we’re going to see a step forward at what should be a fair price.

#6 Bourbon Thunder was a neck away from winning at this level last time out over this track. He should improve in his second straight start over the turf. #1 Calibrator gets some solid class relief in this spot after taking on much tougher runners in his last several starts over this track.

#5 Gitana runs first off of the claim for Saffie Joseph, Jr., which usually leads to an improved effort. She has been close at this level on several occasions. #6 To a T will get some class relief back down to Florida breds today, which should help her chances. She is the one they will have to hold off late down the stretch.

Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming

#2 Panther Island goes for two in a row in this spot after picking up a nice allowance win over the synthetic surface in his last start. #6 Agent Peter Graves will get class relief back down to the allowance ranks in this spot after nearly winning a stakes race over this track in his last start.

Race 9: Claiming

#5 Divine Connection gets major class relief today, which should help her chances. She also runs for Carlos David for the first time in this spot. #2 Tank Top goes for two in a row after a solid maiden special weight score over this track last time out. This is a suspicious drop; however, she has the talent to get the job done here.

1^st race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (7) Cairo Sugar made her first start against NY-breds after shipping up from Parx and finished second from a stalking position. (1) Two Redheads moves from the Mark Casse division of DJ Stables to that of Linda Rice after two starts at Woodbine and faces state-breds for the first time. (4) The Splendid One moved from turf to dirt but caught a sloppy track and finished third. (2) Dream On Cara is still a maiden even after racing her last three times in NY-bred stakes races since switching to the dirt.
4^th race [Md 50000, 1 mi] – (2) Winning Connection began his career in a pair of maiden claimers and ran well. He stepped up in class, caught two wet tracks, and experimented with blinkers without success. (7) Please Baby ran third for a $75,000 tag after moving from turf to dirt. (8) Sixwillberich had two starts for Tom Morley, was bet each time, ran a little bit in the early going and drops down again. (6) Practicallymine ran a better race when he dropped into the claiming ranks and moved onto the dirt.
5^th race [NY, Clm 25000, 7F] – (3) Runningwscissors drops down to his lowest recent level after getting claimed back in November. He will switch from turf to dirt now. He has a great record at Aqueduct. (2) Quickflash was claimed from an easy victory for $14,000 and could get loose on the lead again in this field. (8) Masked Marauder has run well the last three times against open company and goes back to facing NY-breds. (5) Gandy Dancing was also claimed last time following a victory against open company. Last time he ran at today’s level he was a winner.
8^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (6) Callaloo made a big improvement when he finished second and earned his best speed figure. (4) Refuah has finished first or second in his last six starts at three different tracks. (7) Lem Me Drink moved from turf to dirt and now gets blinkers on. (1) Quackenbush has two starts both on the wet tracks for Mark Hennig but had a big improvement in his most recent race.Best bets: Winning Connection (4^th); Callaloo (8^th). Best value: Cairo Sugar (1^st); Runningwscissors (5^th).

Fair Grounds - Race #4

#2 Boxster	He'll go off the claim at a better price this time around off the dull run with similar last out, and I like the fact that Gutierrez signs on for this one off the flat try. Wouldn't be shocked for a capable barn.
#1 Soft Pants	Most of these have a lot of dull recent running lines, but at least this guy is stepping up in good form, and that can count for a lot in a spot like this. Makes a lot of sense here.
#6 Cote d'Ivoire	He was away poorly and never involved in the debut run, but he's down in class while stretching out in a spot that doesn't contain a whole lot of imposing droppers.
Race Summary	Boxster goes off the Carlos Silva claim, and that team is better than their early start here has shown. Thinking he can be tough if he's able to come back at all for the new team.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#8 Kathaan	Nothing wrong with her first three starts at Hawthorne, and I really like he she gets herself engaged a bit earlier than the deeper closers. Think she's the main threat to loom on the turn and land this.
#1 Lolloping	She's back off the bench after her form soured, but at least she's a confirmed turfer in a race where she's meeting a handful of horses who have done their work on the main track. Nice trip while tucked in behind a couple pace players?
#4 Livy B	Her form is not all that consistent, but her best stuff would make her interesting in here, and she would benefit if a couple of the forward players hooked up early and set a decent tempo.
Race Summary	Kathaan has a big pedigree for this kind of spot and has been really reliable through three career starts. Think she still has some upside and a nice future, and this might set her on her way for a nice 4-year-old campaign.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#1 Rose Palace	She took a little step back in her second career start when catching a tough debut winner, but she looks competitive on paper in here as something like the second or third choice.
#8 Cheeky	Never been a great guesser at which horses coming out of this barn are going to be live, but this one strikes me as a runner who might be ready to go, and she gets a really good draw for what I hope is a tactical trip spying the speed.
#6 Catwings	She scored easily at Indiana Grand before being DQ'ed for a medication overage, and she is obviously a good fit with this kind right now with several running lines that feel like they fit well here.
Race Summary	Rose Palace might be able to get back to something more like her debut run, and I'm hoping that Catwings might be vulnerable late off the bench after being DQ'ed from an easy maiden win in Indiana.

#4 WOLFINBARGER (4-1)	Dropped, pressed winner on inside, swung 4-wide, tired in stretch as fave.
Race Summary	MY DEVILS CHILD was 0-for-8 last year, but he ran his best race in a near miss at this level for a barn that re-claimed him. He finished first or second in 11 of 28 starts at Penn National and is worth a win and place bet at 5-1 on the morning line.

#6 FULL OF ATTITUDE (4-1)	Took money, raced evenly in slow 4-1/2F sprint, sheds blinkers.
