    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
    # 6 MAVEN 3/1
    # 7 CHAOS THEORY 2/1
    # 4 BARRISTAN THE BOLD (GB) 3/1
MAVEN could be the wager in here. With Ellingwood uptop him, this gelding should be able to break out sharply in here. Has to be given consideration based on the respectable speed fig recorded in the last contest. He has a strong distance/surface win record - 4 for 15. CHAOS THEORY - He should be given consideration given the solid speed numbers. Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figs of this group of horses in his last race. BARRISTAN THE BOLD (GB) - He has put up formidable figures under today's conditions and should fare well against this group of animals. This gelding obviously likes the distance, going 6 for 24 in his races lately.

Hobart Racecourse will host its annual Elwick Stakes Day this Sunday, with the highlight events being the Listed Elwick Stakes for the two-year-olds, the $100,000 Summer Cup and the $75,000 Thousand Guineas. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday we could see an even softer track come race day. The rail will be out in the +10m position for the entire circuit, which may suit on-speed runners early. The first race will jump at 12:55pm AEDT.
        Elwick Stakes Tip – Cairns

The $125,000 Listed Elwick Stakes will feature eight two-year-olds, with all four of the runners with race experience meeting at least once throughout their career. The unbeaten two-year-old filly Cairns, from the Barry Campbell yard, was very impressive on debut on December 14, when she defeated Needs Sugar, Thoros Of Myr and Encounter Sphere over 1100m at Launceston. This daughter of Stratosphere showed in her only start to date that she is very professional and has good barrier manners and speed, which is rare for a two-year-old on debut. From barrier four, Anthony Darmanin should have this girl on speed with Thoros Of Myr, who will also look to find the lead. Once they hit the home turn, we should see this filly kick away from the gelding, just like she did on debut.

Thousand Guineas Tip – Jaguar Stone

After running in the Tasmanian Guineas and taking on the boys last start, Jaguar Stone will drop back to her own sex in the $75,000 Thousand Guineas. This three-year-old filly finished fifth last start, but she was the best-performing filly in the race by some way and was beaten by four geldings. Before running in the Guineas, this daughter of Spieth was beaten by Bello Beau at her last three starts, who went on to run a close second in the Guineas, so that form looks to be the best reference for this race on Sunday. Troy Baker has ridden Jaguar Stone at all five of her starts this preparation, filling us with more confidence that he will have this girl in the right position from barrier two and give her every chance.

Summer Cup Tip – Travelling Gigolo

The second of the co-features will be the $100,000 Summer Cup for the stayers over 2200m. We’ll be siding with the Scott Brunton-trained Travelling Gigolo, who ran second last start over 2100m in the Brighton Cup at this track on January 6. This five-year-old gelding was only warming up with 300m to go in the 2100m event, so even though he hasn’t been to the 2200m before, we expect him to run it out strongly and finish with that burst he showed recently. Now that this son of Globetrotter is third-up and has a run at 1650m and 2100m under his belt, he should be at peak fitness for this run. David Pires will stick from last start and will be hoping to get a better run in transit with more luck from back in the field. If he gets the luck and a solid tempo, he will be flying down the outside late.

Best Bet at Hobart – Emily

We were with Emily at her last start when she flashed home over 1009m at Devonport on the synthetic track to finish second on January 11. The Barry Campbell runner has not finished outside the top two in any of her eight starts, showing that she is always in the finish. This daughter of Wordsmith will be third-up on Sunday and should be peaking for this race, which should see her ready to step up in distance to 1100m. If things pan out the same as they did at her last start, the extra 100m should suit her get-back-and-run-on racing style. We should see this girl get to the outside and finish strong down the outside to nab the leaders late and record her fifth win at her ninth career start.

Racing heads down to Mornington Racecourse on Sunday afternoon for a competitive eight-race card kicking off at 1:05pm local time. With perfect conditions forecast over the weekend in Melbourne’s southeast, we expect to start on a Good 4 from race one. Considering the track is currently a Soft 5, it should remain a Good 4 throughout the day. The rail comes out 8m the entire circuit, so it could be an advantageous to be up on speed.
Best Bet at Mornington: Our Goddess

If it is indeed a day to be up on speed, the Clinton McDonald-trained Our Goddess will be mighty hard to beat in the second event over 1000m. The four-year-old finished second in all three starts during her initial campaign in the middle of 2022 and looks primed to bring up an overdue maiden win. The Shalaaa mare brings genuine Group 1 form lines to this maiden event, too, having finished within a neck of subsequent Coolmore Stud Stakes runner-up C’est Magique at Pakenham on August 22. She retains the services of Ben Melham, and despite this being her first look at Mornington under raceday conditions, Our Goddess should prove too hard to gun down.

Next Best at Mornington: Kimberley Pearl

We were with the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Kimberley Pearl at Stony Creek on January 3, and although she found one better on that day, we’re willing to side with her once again. She steps up to the 1200m, which looks perfect for her based on her maiden win at Wangaratta two starts back over 1170m. She draws barrier two under Michael Dee for this assignment, and if Dee can have her lobbed on the heels on the leaders throughout, Kimberley Pearl has shown she has the turn of foot to put them away. With the extra distance and a soft run in transit, the $3.50 with online Bookmakers looks a great price to load into.

Best Value at Mornington: Southern Gale

Patrick Kearney brings last-start debut winner Southern Gale to the Mornington 1500m following a dashing four-length triumph at Burrumbeet on January 1. The four-year-old mare managed to lead throughout, and when asked for an effort on the turn she kicked clear and ultimately proved too good for maiden company. She heads straight to a BM64, and in a race full of perennial non-winners, we’re hopeful the untapped potential that Southern Gale possesses can prove to be the difference on Sunday. There’s plenty to learn about this one, but at around $10 with the top betting sites, she is worth a play.

            Visit Ladbrokes

We’re racing back at Wyong on Sunday afternoon after a short turnaround from the Wednesday meeting there. The rail has moved back to the true position the entire circuit, so look for a minor on-speed bias, particularly early in the program. There are some showers expect for Sunday, so we’re going to be looking at something in the Soft to Heavy range come the first race. Racing gets underway at 1pm AEDT.
            Best bet: Competition

Competition looks ready to win here third up over the 1600m for the James Cummings yard. This son of Shooting To Win has been crying out to step up in trip and sees that on Sunday afternoon at Wyong. His two starts this preparation over the 1200m and 1350m both had plenty of merit as Competition made inroads from well back in the field to just miss the placings into fourth and fifth respectfully. He had also been having a shocking time drawing a barrier, coming up with barriers 11 and 13, while this time he should get a terrific run much closer to the speed than his previous efforts. Mitchell Bell keeps the ride here and provided he can get Competition to jump on even terms, he should be in behind the leaders and just need some luck turning for home to be beating this field in rather convincing fashion to be a maiden no more.

            Next best: Justina

The opening race at Wyong is a Class 1 over the 1100m and should see the return of Justina for the Brad Widdup team. This three-year-old filly has had just one start for one win and looks to be resuming in terrific order for Sunday afternoon. She’s had two barrier trials since being tipped out and both showed she’s ready to go here, particularly the latest trial at Rosehill on December 29 which saw the filly be ridden along to score. The in form Brett Prebble takes the reins here and from barrier four should look to take luck out of the equation by pinging the lids and press forward to lead them up, before kicking clear of her rivals. She’s a classy type and provided she can handle the testing conditions, she’s very hard to beat.

            Best value: Moonflower

The first leg of the quaddie is a race stacked full of dual acceptors, so we’re taking on some of the favoured gallopers like Boston City and Time To Boogie with Moonflowers, with thinking they’ll accept for the maiden at Kembla Grange on Saturday. Regardless, if they line up here or not, Moonflowers looks a very progressive type for the James Cummings yard and they’ve taken their time with this now three-year-old filly out of Lonhro. She’s been a trial star at both two and three, but this is the first occasion we get to see her step out in a race proper, and despite it looking an open maiden, what we’ve seen at the trials makes her a keen bet at around $7 with online Bookmakers. Rachel King took the reins in one of her five official trials, so she knows this filly well and will look to sit midfield with cover throughout before peeling off the leaders to score.

Rocket Picks : Oaklawn Park, Gulfstream Park, and Santa Anita for January 22, 2023
              By: Aaron Halterman

Let’s get another big Sunday of racing kicked off today! For the free pick 4, we will head to Gulfstream Park for the Late Pick 4 on the card. We will also have full card selections for Santa Anita and Oaklawn Park for the paid Rockets, so be sure to check those out. Let’s GO!

Below is our free late Pick 4 for Gulfstream Park:

              Gulfstream Park January 22, 2023

              Race 7: Claiming

#12 Golden Soda can pull the mild upset today after winning over this track and at this class level last time out. He should improve in his second race off of the layoff today. #4 Pipito was a close second last time out against similar horses at Gulfstream Park. This is also his first race after being claimed by a solid trainer.

              Race 8: Allowance Optional Claiming
              freestar

#1 Meetmeinkingston was a close second at this level and distance last time out at Gulfstream Park. He should improve in his second race over the turf today. #2 No Angel moves back to the turf today, which is his best surface. He won at this level three starts back at Laurel Park.

              Race 9: Claiming

#6 Bluefield has run well in two starts over this track and at this level since coming back from a layoff. She should be tough again today. #7 More Than Vows can win in this spot if he rebounds from a poor effort last time out at Churchill Downs. Before that race, she had performed consistently well.

              Race 10: Starter Optional Claiming

#2 Good Soldier gets back to the turf today, which is his best surface, while he also gets major class relief today. That looks to be needed. #9 Media Sensation gets back to the turf today as well after running was over the synthetic surface last time out. He has been close to winning since dropping to this level.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Pick 4 Analysis | Sunday, January 22, 2023

                by Al Cimaglia

                January 21, 2023

The Meadowlands has an 11-race Sunday matinee card set to roll. The headliner comes in Race 8, a Preferred Pace with a $34,500 purse. The 0.50 Pick 4 also starts in Race 8. The sequence has a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                Race 8

6-Belmont Royale N (9/5)-This will be the biggest challenge for this New Zealand bred who is a perfect 3-3 at M1 and may have more to offer. Did miss a start but the 2 most logical contenders are #4 who was scratched sick on 1-16 plus hasn't raced since 12-17, and the one below.
7-American Dealer N (4-1)-Has been on the bench since 9-26 but tuned up with 2 sharp, quick qualifiers at M1 on 1-7 and 1-14. Joe B, who usually drives was aboard for those 2 races and picked here over #2. Could leave for position but can also close in a hurry. Should be tough to beat if dialed on high.

                Race 9

5-Bank Sea (6-1)-This veteran has hit the board in 32 of 73 Big M races with 13 pictures. Team Cano entry drew well and is a one move horse. Could surprise at a nice price if the pilot provides a sharp steer.
9-Noch Ten (9/2)-This Auciello entry has the speed to beat this kind but was only 3-30 last year and has not connected for a picture in 6 tries here. Was better last week racing near the top of the stack, they went to the half in 53.4 and was 3-wide. Finished a beaten 3rd but held position, comes back at the same class and should be in the hunt.

                Race 10

5-Bullvillekarla (3-1)-Got in a race at MR on 1-16 and that could help. Had been racing versus tougher here and now drops to a more comfortable level. Looking for a big try and did beat this kind from post 9 on 11-18.
6-Alkippe (5-1)-Comes off a win at Fhld versus cheaper and Andrew McCarthy is between the pipes. This 7-year-old Sweet Lou mare isn't easy to figure but did set a lifetime mark here in 151.1 last year. Should fit with this bunch and hoping the new pilot will make a difference.
8-Gottalovemyshadow (7/2)-David Miller will steer again after finishing 2nd on 1-13 at 7/5. This post helps the price and has the gate speed to be forwardly placed throughout. If could be picture time if lands on top or in the 2-hole without being used too hard.

                Race 11

3-Guys In The Band (8-1)- Will look for a price in this taffy pully and if this Philly invader is tight enough he could surprise. Hasn't raced since 12-18 but was driven aggressively from post 7 in his 1-7 qualifier. Might look to wire this crew and if tight enough that could be a winning plan.
6-JK Will Power (2-1)-This 10-year-old is worth a long look but this is only the 2nd start since 9-12. Not crazy about the morning line price and has missed over a month since his 12-17 race. But has back class and could beat this crew if improves a bit off the last start.

RACE 3: LA VITA SOFIA (#5)

I imagine that Shidabhuti (#6) will take plenty of money off her 6-lengthh debut triumph at Monmouth. Yet I have some questions about this filly’s overall quality and her ability to handle the stretch-out to a mile. It’s a little odd that she’s been on the shelf for the past 4 months, since it seems that she’s been training right along the entire time, logging 15 workouts since that debut score. That says to me that Chad Brown just didn’t think she was good enough to compete in many of the stakes that came up during the interim and has been waiting for a softer spot like this to fill. Furthermore, she got a great pace setup in that debut while beating a very weak field. Practical Joke is not the best stamina influence and she strikes me as a more of a sprinter. The other debut winner Howzyourcashflow (#2) has a significant recency edge, having just competed 10 days ago. She’s making a big leap up in class, but she actually earned the fastest speed figure in this field, getting a 95 TimeformUS on debut. She’s another who has to answer the distance question, but I like the aggression being displayed. Yet I’m more interested in proven commodities at what may be bigger prices. Gold Medal Anna (#1) offers some appeal as she ships in from Parx. This deep closer has been beaten by a legitimate foe, Girl Trouble, in her last couple of stakes attempts. She’s getting mild class relief here and gives the impression that added ground should help, as she is a daughter of Grade 1 turf router Voodoo Dancer. My top pick is La Vita Sofia (#5). She didn’t seem to get the distance in the Demoiselle last time, but it’s asking a lot of these youngsters to try 9 furlongs. Her prior effort in the Tempted is better than it appears. She was traveling well approaching the quarter pole, but Jose Gomez overcommitted to the inside path and got steadied behind a tiring rival just as she was mounting a rally. She’s a little light on speed figures overall, but I think this is the right distance for her and she’s getting significant class relief.

                  RACE 5: STAGE LEFT (#2)

There may only be 6 betting interests in this high-level optional claimer, but it’s arguably the most interesting race on the card. Amundson (#5) had been in great form last fall and seemed to maintain that condition when he was first claimed by Linda Rice last year. However, he’s now lost twice in a row at short prices, and he figures to encounter a difficult pace scenario here with plenty of other speed signed on. The biggest early challenge figures to come from Pirate Rick (#1A), who is drawn just to his outside. This Lynn Cash runner wasn’t successful when he made his first trip to Aqueduct last November. However, he’s since rebounded to win three in a row, including a redemptive victory when he returned to this circuit last time. That came at a slightly lower level than this, but he defeated a pretty talented rival in Sheriff Bianco, snapping a 3-race winning streak for that foe. A repeat of that 123 TimeformUS Speed Figure could make him too much for this group to handle. Yet he and Amundson will be hard-pressed to wire this field, as even longshot Fire Sword (#4)figures to mix it up on the front end. Happy Farm (#3) is the most logical closer that many might consider. He was overmatched in the Fall Highweight two back and rebounded decently last time when closing for third behind a gate-to-wire winner. I’m reluctant to take horses from this barn at short prices, as they have been underperforming lately. My top pick is Stage Left (#2), who should also benefit from some quick fractions up front. He finished behind Amundson at this level last time, but he didn’t get the right ride that day, as he found himself pressing a contested pace. He put in a performance that makes him competitive here two back, and he’s also run well when closing from off the pace in the past. The turnback to 6 furlongs should suit him and he figures to be a fair price.

                  RACE 8: SECURITY CODE (#6)

Stonewall Star (#7) is obviously the most accomplished member of this Franklin Square field. However, I think she’s coming into this a little overrated. She enjoyed a very soft setup when she won the Key Cents back in November, and she had little excuse to lose that stakes at Laurel last time. She’s a nice horse, but I’m not sure that she’s really improved at all since last fall and there is other speed to push her on the front end this time. Among the likely short prices, I prefer the upside of Starry Midnight (#1), who ran quite a race on debut. This filly wasn’t actually that slow out of the gate and was briefly in contact with the field before she appeared to react badly to kickback on the backstretch. She was striding greenly as she abruptly dropped back, seemingly out of contention. Yet she put in an impressive rally on the far turn to get back into the race, which ultimately carried her to victory. This is a much tougher spot, but I think she’s capable of improving with that experience under her belt. I just wonder if she’ll be much of a price here, since it’s not secret that she had a trip first time out. I want to go in a different direction with another late runner. Security Code (#6) has been a disappointment since beating Stonewall Star at Saratoga over the summer. She went badly off form when she first came to Aqueduct in the fall, but her last couple of starts have been subtle steps back in the right direction. She closed decently to just miss second behind Stonewall Star in the Key Cents when not getting the best setup. And then last time she would have been clearly second to Banterra if she hadn’t been ridden into traffic at the quarter pole. She needs to take another step forward to upset this field, but she figures to be a generous price and I think there’s going to be some pace in here.

NFL (315) CINCINNATI BENGALS VS (316) BUFFALO BILLS
                                Take: (315) CINCINNATI BENGALS
Reason: The Bengals travel to Buffalo this week in the divisional playoffs. Last these teams met the game was cancelled due to the tragic events of Bills safety Damar Hamlin. With Hamlin on the mend these teams will get back to it, this time though in Buffalo. The weather may also play a factor here on Sunday as snow and/or rain is expected. According to the reports up to about an inch of snow is possible. The Bills are fortunate to be here in this game. After jumping out to a 17-0 lead last week over the Dolphins, they had to hold on for the win. QB Josh Allen had a horrible game, tossing two INT's and fumbling three times. One of those turnovers Miami returned for a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Bengals have won nine games in a row behind QB Joe Burrow. The only thing that kept me making the Bengals a bigger play is their uncertainty of their offensive line. Guard Alex Cappa is questionable with an ankle and Tackle J. Williams is doubtful with a knee injury. I'm still going to take very good covering Bengals team here today. They will be my Free play for this week.
